Fire and heat resistant laminating resins based on maleimido substituted aromatic cyclotriphosphazene polymer

4-Aminophenoxy cyclotriphosphazenes are reacted with maleic anhydride to produce maleamic acids which are converted to the maleimides. The maleimides are polymerized. By selection of starting materials (e.g., hexakis amino or trisaminophenoxy trisphenoxy cyclotriphosphazenes), selection of molar proportions of reactants, use of mixtures of anhydrides and use of dianhydrides as bridging groups a variety of maleimides and polymers are produced. The polymers have high limiting oxygen indices, high char yields and other useful heat and fire resistant properties making them useful as, for example, impregnants of fabrics.

Kinetic study of polymerization/curing of filament-wound composite epoxy resin systems with aromatic diamines

The kinetics of polymerization/curing of a filament-wound composite epoxy resin consisting of an 80/20 DGEBA/DGEBD blend and an MDA/m-PDA blend (Tonox 60/40) was studied at various temperatures and at amine epoxy ratios between 1.1 and 4.4 by means of Fourier-transform (FT) IR and bulk viscosity measurements. The activation energy for the polymerization/curing reaction using an amine/epoxy ratio of 1.1 was 11.9 kcal/mole, in agreement with a previous value. The FT-IR conversion-time plots were fitted to a kinetic expression containing two rate constants with activation energies of 13.7 and 10.0 kcal/mole. The bulk viscosity followed the Williams et al. (1955) equation, with a Di Benedetto (1965) expression for the glass transition temperature.

Ethynylated aromatics as high temperature matrix resins

Difunctional and trifunctional arylacetylenes were used as monomers to form thermoset matrix resin composites. Composites can be hot-pressed at 180 C to react 80 percent of the acetylene groups. Crosslinking is completed by postcuring at 350 C. The postcured resins are thermally stable to nominally 460 C in air. As a result of their high crosslink density, the matrix exhibits brittle failure when uniaxial composites are tested in tension. Failure of both uniaixial tensile and flexural specimens occurs in shear at the fiber-matrix interface. Tensile fracture stresses for 0-deg composites fabricated with 60 v/o Celion 6K graphite fiber were 827 MPa. The strain to failure was 0.5 percent. Composites fabricated with 8 harness satin Celion cloth (Fiberite 1133) and tested in tension also failed in shear at tensile stresses of 413 MPa.

Developing Crystallinity In Linear Aromatic Polyimides

New technique improves melt flow of polyimide. Uses chemical imidization or cyclodehydration techniques that do not cause significant decrease in molecular weight. Process involves dissolution of polyamide acid in amide solvent or mixture of ether and amide solvent at low percentage of solids followed by treatment of this solution with aprotic organic base, such as triethylamine or pyridine, for period of time prior to treatment with organic dehydrating agent. Latter treatments facilitates formation of polyimide. Useful for production of polyimide molding materials. Expected to have widespread application in preparation of easily processed adhesives, molding powders, and matrix resins.

Non-isothermal crystallization of poly(etheretherketone) aromatic polymer composite

The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of PEEK APC-2 and of 450G neat resin PEEK material were compared using a differential scanning calorimeter to monitor heat flow during crystallization; the effects of cooling rate on the crystallization temperature, the degree of crystallinity, and the conversion rate were investigated. A modified Avrami (1940) analysis was used to describe nonisothermal crystallization kinetics. It was found that, compared with the 450G neat resin PEEK, the nonisothermal crystallization of the PEEK APC-2 composite is characterized by higher initiation temperature, higher heat flow maximum temperature, and greater relative conversion by primary processes.

New emission features in the 11-13 micron region and their relationship to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Moderate-resolution spectra of NGC 7027, HD 44179, IRAS 2182+5050, and BD +30 deg 3639 are presented, showing that the 11.3-micron feature actually peaks at 11.22 microns. Evidence is found for new emission features near 11.9 and 12.7 microns, supporting an origin from PAHs. Also, the observed asymmetry of the 11.3-micron band is consistent with the anharmonicity expected in the C-H out-of-plane bending mode in PAHs. The analysis of the 11-13-micron emission suggests that the molecular structures of the most intensely emitting free PAHs vary between the high-excitation environment in NGC 7027 and the low-excitation but high-flux environment close to HD 44179. In addition, a series of regularly spaced features between 10 and 11 microns is detected in the spectrum of HD 44179, suggesting that a simple polyatomic hydride is present in the object's gas phase.

Spatial variations of the 3 micron emission features within UV-excited nebulae - Photochemical evolution of interstellar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Spectra at 3 microns have been obtained at several positions in the Orion Bar region and in the nebula surrounding HD 44179. Weak emission features at 3.40, 3.46, 3.51, and 3.57 microns are prominent in the Orion Bar region. The 3.40- and 3.51-micron features increase in intensity relative to the dominant 3.29-micron feature. The spectrum obtained in the Red Rectangle region 5 arcsecs north of HD 44179 are similar to those in the Orion Bar, with a weak, broad 3.40-micron feature at the position of HD 44179. The spatial behavior of the weak emission features is explained in terms of hot bands of the CH stretch and overtones, and combination bands of other fundamental vibrations in simple PAHs. Based on the susceptibility of PAHs to destruction by the far UV fields in both regions, PAH sizes are estimated at 20-50 carbon atoms.

Interstellar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons - The infrared emission bands, the excitation/emission mechanism, and the astrophysical implications

A comprehensive study of the PAH hypothesis is presented, including the interstellar, IR spectral features which have been attributed to emission from highly vibrationally excited PAHs. Spectroscopic and IR emission features are discussed in detail. A method for calculating the IR fluorescence spectrum from a vibrationally excited molecule is described. Analysis of interstellar spectrum suggests that the PAHs which dominate the IR spectra contain between 20 and 40 C atoms. The results are compared with results from a thermal approximation. It is found that, for high levels of vibrational excitation and emission from low-frequency modes, the two methods produce similar results. Also, consideration is given to the relationship between PAH molecules and amorphous C particles, the most likely interstellar PAH molecular structures, the spectroscopic structure produced by PAHs and PAH-related materials in the UV portion of the interstellar extinction curve, and the influence of PAH charge on the UV, visible, and IR regions.

Electronic absorption spectroscopy of matrix-isolated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon cations. I - The naphthalene cation (C10H8/+/)

The ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared absorption spectra of naphthalene (C10H8) and its radical ion (C10H8/+/), formed by vacuum ultraviolet irradiation, were measured in argon and neon matrices at 4.2 K. The associated vibronic band systems and their spectroscopic assignments are discussed together with the physical and chemical conditions governing ion production in the solid phase. The absorption coefficients were calculated for the ion and found lower than previous values, presumably due to the low polarizability of the neon matrix.

On the state of the emitter of the 3.3 micron unidentified infrared band - Absorption spectroscopy of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon species

Results of absorption measurements indicate that the PAH species responsible for the UIR (unidentified infrared) emission probably exist in a condensed form rather than as isolated molecules. It is shown that the peak absorption of the C-H stretch feature of vapor-phase PAHs occurs at a higher frequency than that of the condensed-phase PAHs and does not match the 3.289-micron interstellar feature. The vapor-phase experiments duplicate the phenomenon of the 3.3-micron profile simplification of PAH in KBr at elevated temperature. This confirms that the change of the profile with temperature is an intrinsic molecular effect, and is not a consequence of matrix (KBr) or condensed state interactions.

The ultraviolet and visible spectrum of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon C10H8(+) - Possible contributions to the diffuse interstellar bands and to the ultraviolet-visible extinction

The properties of the cation of the PAH naphthalene (C10H8(+)) isolated in inert gas matrices under conditions relevant to astrophysical environments are described. The band at 6741 A is the strongest and falls close to the weak 6742 A diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). Five other weaker bands also fall remarkably close to the positions of known DIBs. A very intense and broad continuum extended from the UV to the visible, which seems to be associated with the ion, is reported. The molar absorption coefficient at the peak of the continuum is 2.0 x 10 exp 6 cu dm/mol cm. If a continuum is a general property of PAH cations, this characteristic will have a strong impact on the understanding of how PAHs convert interstellar UV and visible radiation into IR radiation.
