Energetics of Salt-Bearing Sodalites, Na 8 Al 6 Si 6 O 24 X 2 (X = SO 4 , ReO 4 , Cl, I): A Treatment Option for Pertechnetate-Enriched Nuclear Waste Streams

An alternative option for treating anion-enriched reprocessed nuclear waste streams is to immobilize technetium-99 ( 99 Tc, β = 293.7 keV, t 1/2 = 2.1 × 10 5 years) and other anions in micro- and mesoporous materials. Here we determine the thermodynamic stability of anion bearing sodalites, Na 8 Al 6 Si 6 O 24 X 2 (X = SO 4 , ReO 4 , Cl, I), to improve our understanding of the driving forces that control framework assembly using high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. Raman and FTIR spectroscopy illustrate a strong dependence for vibrational features on anion size and enabled the development of a linear model that predicted the vibrational features for numerous anion bearing sodalites to within ±20 cm –1 (i.e., OH, F, Br, ClO 4 , NO 3 , and MnO 4 ). The largest negative enthalpy of formation from elements and the lack of structural water demonstrate that the perrhenate sodalite (Na 8 Al 6 Si 6 O 24 [ReO 4 ] 2 ), a chemical analogue for pertechnetate sodalite (Na 8 Al 6 Si 6 O 24 [TcO 4 ] 2 ), is more thermodynamically stable than all other anion bearing sodalites evaluated. The enthalpies of the reaction between nepheline and the sodium salt, which provides the guest anion species, was negative only for the ReO 4 and NO 3 bearing sodalites. Overall, we report for the first time the enthalpy of the ion exchange reactions for different anion bearing sodalites relative to the perrhenate sodalite, which is a key step in gaining the ability to tune sodalite material properties and structure during treatment and the immobilization of 99 Tc in the presence of competing anions.

Comparative Analysis of Reactivity of Al and Ga Doped Garnet Solid State Electrolyte at the Interface with Li Metal

Lithium garnet (Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 , LLZO) based solid electrolytes are leading candidate materials for all-solid-state batteries with lithium metal anodes because of their high ionic conductivity, high mechanical toughness, and superior electrochemical stability. While doping LLZO with Al and Ga increases its ionic conductivity by stabilizing the cubic phase, the impact of dopants on its (electro)chemical stability at the interfaces with Li metal is critical. Here, our study of differences between Al- and Ga-doped LLZO when interfaced with lithium metal using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory shows a higher propensity of Ga to move across LLZO interface with Li metal and form Ga-Li alloy. Additionally, neutron diffraction reveals loss of cubic phase resulting from the loss of dopant that explains electrochemical behavior differences between Ga- and Al-doped LLZO. Overall, our study reveals the key role of dopant chemistry in enabling stable solid electrolyte materials for all-solid-state batteries.

Nitrogen Vacancies Induce Fatigue in Ferroelectric Al 0.93 B 0.07 N

Wurtzite ferroelectrics (e.g., Al 0.93 B 0.07 N) are being explored for high-temperature and emerging near-, or in-compute, memory architectures due to the material advantages offered by their large remanent polarization and robust chemical stability. Despite these advantages, current Al0.93B0.07N devices do not have sufficient endurance lifetime to meet roadmap targets. To identify the defects responsible for this limited endurance, a combination of electronic measurements and optical spectroscopies characterized the evolution of defect states within Al 0.93 B 0.07 N with cycling. Ultrathin (∼10 nm) metal contacts were used to optically probe regions subject to ferroelectric switching; photoluminescence spectroscopy identified the emergence of a transition near 2.1 eV whose intensity scaled with the non-switching polarization quantified via positive-up negative-down (PUND) measurements. Accompanying thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) and modulus spectroscopy measurements also observed the strengthening of a state near 2.1 eV. The origin of this feature is ascribed to transitions between a nitrogen vacancy and another defect deeper in the bandgap. Recognizing that the impurity concentration is largely fixed, strengthening of this transition indicates an increase in the number of nitrogen vacancies. Switching, therefore, creates vacancies in Al 0.93 B 0.07 N likely due to hot-atom damage induced by the aggressive fields necessary to switch wurtzite materials that ultimately limits endurance.

Probing Heterogeneous Charge Distributions at the α-Al 2 O 3 (0001)/H 2 O Interface

Unlike metal or semiconductor electrodes, the surface charge resulting from the protonation or deprotonation of insulating mineral oxides is highly localized and heterogeneous in nature. In this work the Stark active C≡N stretch of potassium thiocyanate is used as a molecular probe of the heterogeneity of the interfacial electrostatic potential at the α-Al 2 O 3 (0001)/H 2 O interface. Vibrational sum frequency generation (vSFG) measurements performed in the OH stretching region suggest that thiocyanate species organize interfacial water similarly to halide ions. Changes in the electrostatic potential are then tracked via Stark shifts of the vibrational frequency of the thiocyanate stretch. Our vSFG measurements show that we can simultaneously measure the vSFG response of SCN – ions experiencing charged and neutral surface sites. We assign local potentials of +308 and -154 mV to positively and negatively charged aluminol groups that are present at pH = 4 and pH = 10, respectively. Thiocyanate anions at positively charged surface sites and negatively charged surface sites and those participating in contact ion pairing adopt similar orientations and are oppositely oriented relative to thiocyanate ions near neutral surface sites. All four species followed Langmuir adsorption isotherms. Density functional theory–molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) simulations of SCN – near the neutral α-Al 2 O 3 (0001)/H 2 O interface show that the vSFG response in the C≡N stretch region originates from a SCN–H–O–Al complex, suggesting the surface site specificity of these experiments. To our knowledge this is the first spectroscopic measurement of local potentials associated with a heterogeneously charged surface. The ability to probe the evolution of local charges in situ could provide vital insight into many industrial, electrochemical, and geochemically relevant interfaces.

Speciation and Reactivity Control of Cu-Oxo Clusters via Extraframework Al in Mordenite for Methane Oxidation

The stoichiometric conversion of methane to methanol by Cu-exchanged zeolites can be brought to highest yields by the presence of extraframework Al and high CH 4 chemical potentials. Here, combining theory and experiments, the differences in chemical reactivity of monometallic Cu-oxo and bimetallic Cu-Al-oxo nanoclusters stabilized in zeolite mordenite (MOR) are investigated. Cu-L 3 edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), infrared (IR), and ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopies, in combination with CH 4 oxidation activity tests, support the presence of two types of active clusters in MOR and allow quantification of the relative proportions of each type in dependence of the Cu concentration. Ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) calculations and thermodynamic analyses indicate that the superior performance of materials enriched in Cu-Al-oxo clusters is related to the activity of two μ-oxo bridges in the cluster. Replacing H 2 O with ethanol in the product extraction step led to the formation of ethyl methyl ether, expanding this way the applicability of these materials for the activation and functionalization of CH 4 . We show that competition between different ion-exchanged metal-oxo structures during the synthesis of Cu-exchanged zeolites determines the formation of active species, and this provides guidelines for the synthesis of highly active materials for CH 4 activation and functionalization.

Corrosion evaluation of Al-Cu-Mn-Zr cast alloys in 3.5% NaCl solution

Corrosion behavior of cast Al-Cu-Mn-Zr (ACMZ) and RR350 alloys was compared to a cast 319 alloy in 3.5 wt.% NaCl. After 168 h immersion, ACMZ and RR350 alloys suffered from preferential attack adjacent to intermetallic particles decorated at grain boundaries while the attack in 319 occurred in eutectic Al-Si dendritic boundaries. Electrochemical data allowed semiquantitative comparison of alloy resistance to corrosion initiation, and ACMZ type alloys, including RR350 and three alloys with higher Cu, were considered more resistant than 319 due to the absence of deleterious Si particles. In case of 319, such Si particles presumably drove higher micro-galvanic influence to initiate and sustain Al corrosion. With lower susceptibility to corrosion initiation, ACMZ alloys should exhibit higher or at minimum similar resistance compared to cast 319.

The influence of δ-(Al,Fe)OOH on seismic heterogeneities in Earth’s lower mantle

The high-pressure phases of oxyhydroxides (δ-AlOOH, ε-FeOOH, and their solid solution), candidate components of subducted slabs, have wide stability fields, thus potentially influencing volatile circulation and dynamics in the Earth’s lower mantle. Here, we report the elastic wave velocities of δ-(Al,Fe)OOH (Fe/(Al + Fe) = 0.13, δ-Fe13) to 79 GPa, determined by nuclear resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. At pressures below 20 GPa, a softening of the phonon spectra is observed. With increasing pressure up to the Fe 3+ spin crossover (~ 45 GPa), the Debye sound velocity (vD) increases. At higher pressures, the low spin δ-Fe 13 is characterized by a pressure-invariant vD. Using the equation of state for the same sample, the shear-, compressional-, and bulk-velocities (v S , v P , and v Φ ) are calculated and extrapolated to deep mantle conditions. The obtained velocity data show that δ-(Al,Fe)OOH may cause low-v Φ and low-v P anomalies in the shallow lower mantle. At deeper depths, we find that this hydrous phase reproduces the anti-correlation between v S and v Φ reported for the large low seismic velocity provinces, thus serving as a potential seismic signature of hydrous circulation in the lower mantle.

Using genetic algorithms to systematically improve the synthesis conditions of Al-PMOF

The synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is often complex and the desired structure is not always obtained. In this work, we report a methodology that uses a joint machine learning and experimental approach to optimize the synthesis conditions of Al-PMOF (Al 2 (OH) 2 TCPP) [H 2 TCPP = meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphine], a promising material for carbon capture applications. Al-PMOF was previously synthesized using a hydrothermal reaction, which gave a low throughput yield due to its relatively long reaction time (16 hours). Here, we use a genetic algorithm to carry out a systematic search for the optimal synthesis conditions and a microwave-based high-throughput robotic platform for the syntheses. We show that, in just two generations, we could obtain excellent crystallinity and yield close to 80% in a much shorter reaction time (50 minutes). Moreover, by analyzing the failed and partially successful experiments, we could identify the most important experimental variables that determine the crystallinity and yield.

Epitaxial Sc x Al 1- x N on GaN exhibits attractive high-K dielectric properties

Epitaxial Sc x Al 1- x N thin films of ~100 nm thickness grown on metal polar GaN substrates are found to exhibit significantly enhanced relative dielectric permittivity (ε r ) values relative to AlN. ε r values of ~17–21 for Sc mole fractions of 17%–25% ( x = 0.17–0.25) measured electrically by capacitance–voltage measurements indicate that Sc x Al 1- x N has the largest relative dielectric permittivity of any existing nitride material. Since epitaxial Sc x Al 1- x N layers deposited on GaN also exhibit large polarization discontinuity, the heterojunction can exploit the in situ high-K dielectric property to extend transistor operation for power electronics and high-speed microwave applications.

Ferroelectric behavior of sputter deposited Al 0.72 Sc 0.28 N approaching 5 nm thickness

Ferroelectric Al 1-x Sc x N has raised much interest in recent years due to its unique ferroelectric properties and complementary metal oxide semiconductor back-end-of-line compatible processing temperatures. Potential applications in embedded nonvolatile memory, however, require ferroelectric materials to switch at relatively low voltages. One approach to achieving a lower switching voltage is to significantly reduce the Al 1-x Sc x N thickness. In this work, ferroelectric behavior in 5-27 nm films of sputter deposited Al 0.72 Sc 0.28 N has been studied. We find that the 10 kHz normalized coercive field increases from 4.4 to 7.3 MV/cm when reducing the film thickness from 27.1 to 5.4 nm, while over the same thickness range, the characteristic breakdown field of a 12.5 μm radius capacitor increases from 8.3 to 12.1 MV/cm. In conclusion, the 5.4 nm film demonstrates ferroelectric switching at 5.5 V when excited with a 500 ns pulse and a switching speed of 60 ns.

Photoluminescence of Cr 3+ in β-Ga 2 O 3 and (Al 0.1 Ga 0.9 ) 2 O 3 under pressure

The effects of pressure on single crystals of Cr-doped gallium oxide (β-Ga 2 O 3 :Cr 3+ ) and aluminum gallium oxide [(Al 0.1 Ga 0.9 ) 2 O 3 ] were examined by measuring the wavelength shift in the spectral R lines. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of these materials were collected from samples in diamond anvil cells at pressures up to 9 GPa. The β-Ga 2 O 3 :Cr 3+ R lines were found to shift linearly under hydrostatic pressure. The (Al 0.1 Ga 0.9 ) 2 O 3 R lines also show a linear shift but the R 1 line shifted less than for β-Ga 2 O 3 :Cr 3+ . The ratio of R 2 to R 1 peak areas vs pressure is dominated by nonradiative recombination. X-ray diffraction measurements of (Al 0.1 Ga 0.9 ) 2 O 3 indicate that its equation of state is similar to that of β-Ga 2 O 3 . β-Ga 2 O 3 :Cr 3+ was examined under non-hydrostatic conditions by using mineral oil as a pressure transmitting medium. Similar to the case in ruby, the R 1 line is much more sensitive to non-hydrostatic stress than R 2 . Spatially resolved PL of a sample at 8 GPa in mineral oil showed significant variations in the R 1 emission wavelength. Furthermore, these results suggest that the R 1 line can serve as a sensitive probe of alloy composition and non-hydrostatic stress, while the R 2 line is insensitive to these perturbations.

Measurements of the 27 Al(α,n) Thick Target Yield near Threshold

In this work, we present results from direct measurements of the 27 Al(α,n) thick-target yield from laboratory incident energies E α ≈ 3 to 5 MeV, performed with the 3 HeBF 3 Giant Barrel (HeBGB) neutron detector at the Edwards Accelerator Laboratory. Our measurements have a small energy cadence in order to address discrepancies and sparseness of thick-target-yield data sets existing for this energy region. We find general agreement with existing data sets, including yields derived from cross-section data, while resolving a discrepancy between existing thick-target-yield data sets for E α ≈ 4–5 MeV. However, for E α < 3.5 MeV, our results are substantially lower than previous thick-target-yield data and somewhat larger than yields calculated from existing cross-section data. Our data complete the energy range needed for estimates of the 27 Al(α,n) contribution to neutrino and dark matter detector backgrounds and result in increased viability of 27 Al(α,n) as a plasma diagnostic tool at fusion facilities such as the National Ignition Facility.

Structural Analysis of LaNi 4.25 Al 0.75 Hydride

The lanthanum (La)-nickel (Ni)-aluminum (Al) hydrides (LANA: LaNi 5 − x Al x , x < 1.0) have been extensively studied for their high volumetric storage capacity and improved durability to maintain a single-phase CaCu5 structure through multiple absorption and desorption cycles. Pressure composition temperature (PCT) isotherms obtained for LANA have allowed for an understanding of the hydrogen sorption properties and the tunability of the PCT plateau region via doping. At the Savannah River Site, LaNi 4.25 Al 0.75 (LANA0.75) has been utilized as a hydrogen storage material in the tritium facilities for decades. However, the structure characterization of the LANA0.75 hydride by X-ray diffraction has not yet been reported. This study examines LANA0.75 loaded to different hydrogen-to-metal atom ratios to elucidate both the position of hydrogen sites in the lattice and the structure of a fully hydrided β phase.

Highly dispersed Co deposited on Al 2 O 3 particles via CoCp 2 + H 2 ALD

Highly dispersed cobalt atoms were deposited on porous alumina particles using atomic layer deposition (ALD) with a CoCp 2 /H 2 chemistry at approximately 7 wt%. H 2 did not completely reduce the cyclopentadienyl organic ligands bound to deposited Co atoms at ALD reaction conditions. A sharp decline in Co deposited per cycle for two or more ALD cycles indicates that much of the Al 2 O 3 surface is sterically blocked from further CoCp 2 deposition after the first CoCp 2 exposure. Temperature programmed reduction confirmed that the adsorbed precursor organic ligands persist after H 2 exposures during ALD and temperatures as high as 500 °C are required to fully reduce the organic ligands to CH 4 . High resolution, element sensitive imaging showed that Co atoms were dispersed on the Al 2 O 3 surface and could deposit in previously unobserved multiple growth morphologies, specifically layers that were continuous over several angstroms or discrete nanoparticles. Density functional theory calculations were used to examine Co atom adsorption, show the altered haptic binding of cracked Cp ligands, and to calculate the thermodynamics of Cp ligand decomposition. The lateral steric hindrance between organic ligands bound to deposited Co atoms, Cp ligand decomposition mechanism, and local Al 2 O 3 surface termination all likely determine the observed Co growth morphology during initial ALD cycles.

Electric-field-induced crossover of polarization reversal mechanisms in Al 1–x Sc x N ferroelectrics

Scandium-doped aluminum nitride, Al 1–x Sc x N, represents a new class of displacive ferroelectric materials with high polarization and sharp hysteresis along with high-temperature resilience, facile synthesizability and compatibility with standard CMOS fabrication techniques. The fundamental physics behind the transformation of unswitchable piezoelectric AlN into switchable Al–Sc–N ferroelectrics depends upon important atomic properties such as local structure, dopant distributions and the presence of competing mechanism of polarization switching in the presence of an applied electric-field that have not been understood. We computationally synthesize Al 1–x Sc x N to quantify the inhomogeneity of Sc distribution and phase segregation, and characterize its crystal and electronic structure as a function of Sc-doping. Nudged elastic band calculations of the potential energy surface and quantum molecular dynamics simulations of direct electric-field-driven ferroelectric switching reveal a crossover between two polarization reversal mechanisms—inhomogeneous nucleation-and-growth mechanism originating near Sc-rich regions in the limit of low applied fields and nucleation-limited-switching in the high-field regime. Finally, understanding polarization reversal pathways for these two mechanisms as well as the role of local Sc concentration on activation barriers provides design rules to identify other combinations of dopant elements, such as Zr, Mg etc. to synthesize superior AlN-based ferroelectric materials.

Rapid solidified ductile Cu-Al-Mn ribbon and its elastocaloric potential

Abstract Cu-Al-Mn alloys display martensitic transformation over a wide range of temperatures. In addition to low cost, this alloy is known for its low transformation stress with reasonable latent heat favoring elastocaloric applications. However, the ductility of Cu-Al-Mn can be limited owing to ordering and intergranular fracture. Through rapid solidification by melt spinning, we show that Cu-Al-Mn ribbon can be made highly ductile (greater than 8% tensile strain in the as-spun state and 10% tensile strain after heat treatment). The ductility of the melt-spun ribbon is related to the suppression of L2 1 ordering that is characterized through magnetic property measurement. Heat treatment of the ribbon promotes bamboo grain formation, and the latent heat is increased to 6.4 J g −1 . Under tensile conditions, we show that the ribbon exhibited about 4 °C temperature change (4.4 °C on heating and 4.2 °C on cooling from 6.3% strain).

Suppression of the valence transition in solution-grown single crystals of Eu 2 Pt 6 Al 15

Here, the study of Eu intermetallic compounds has allowed the exploration of valence fluctuations and transitions in 4⁢𝑓 electron systems. Recently, a Eu 2 ⁢Pt 6 ⁢Al 15 phase synthesized by arc-melting followed by a thermal treatment was reported M. Radzieowski et al. [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 140, 8950 (2018)], which undergoes a transition upon cooling below 45 K that was interpreted as a valence transition from Eu 2+ to Eu 3+ . In this paper, we present the discovery of another polymorph of Eu 2 ⁢Pt 6 ⁢Al 15 obtained by high temperature solution growth, which presents different physical properties than the arc-melted polycrystalline sample. Despite the similarities in crystal structure and chemical composition, the Eu valence transition is almost fully suppressed in the solution-grown crystals, allowing the moments associated with the Eu 2+ state to order antiferromagnetically at around 14 K. A detailed analysis of the crystal structure using single crystal x-ray diffraction reveals that, although the solution grown crystals are built from the same constituent layers as the arc-melted samples, these layers present a different stacking. The effect of different thermal treatments is also studied. Different anneal procedures did not result in significant changes in the intrinsic properties, and only by arc-melting and quenching the crystals we were able to convert them into the previously reported polymorph.

Measurement of the Ground State Spin and Parity of 22 Al Disfavors Halo Formation

We report the decisive resolution of the ground state spin and parity of the proton–drip line nucleus 22 Al, a prime candidate for a proton halo. The resolution stems from the first 𝛽-delayed charged particle emission experiment in the gas stopping area at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), leveraging high-intensity, low-energy beams extracted from the Advanced Cryogenic Gas Stopper (ACGS). The pristine beam quality from FRIB and the ACGS enabled a sensitive particle identification technique using thin silicon detectors, allowing for the suppression of the dominant proton background and the first observation of the weak 𝛽-delayed 𝛼 transition from the isobaric analog state in 22 Mg to the 18 Ne ground state. This observation uniquely fixes the 22 Al ground state as 4 + . The valence proton is confined by a dominant 𝑑-wave centrifugal barrier which, combined with the Coulomb repulsion, hinders the tunneling required for halo formation despite the exceptionally low proton separation energy of 22 Al.
