# 2013 Metropolitan Area Planning Agency External Travel Survey The 2013 Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA) External Travel Survey was conducted to measure and identify travel patterns into, within, and out of the greater Omaha/Council Bluffs metropolitan area in Nebraska. MAPA sponsored the survey in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration, the Nebraska Department of Roads, and the Iowa Department of Transportation. ## Data Collection Agency MAPA conducted the survey. ## Methodology The purpose of the survey was to collect information and data needed as input for MAPA’s travel-demand model. The survey employed a combination of nine survey methods and data-collection activities, including Bluetooth technology, intercept surveys, postcard handouts, travel-time studies, vehicle classification counts, and a web-based survey. ## Survey Records Survey records include a total of 729 participants. ## Transportation Data This study provides Bluetooth records and supplementary data for 17,434 passenger trips and 3,123 commercial trips, accounting for 714,218 vehicle miles traveled. 2013-2014 Greater Fairbanks, Alaska, Transportation Survey

# 2013–2014 Greater Fairbanks, Alaska, Transportation Survey The 2013–2014 Greater Fairbanks Transportation Survey obtained behavior data for regional travel demand modeling. The planning region in Alaska comprised the North Star Borough—known as the PM2.5 nonattainment region—and included the cities of Fairbanks and North Pole. ## Data Collection Agency The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities conducted the survey. ## Methodology Data collection occurred in two phases: the first in fall 2013 and the second in winter 2014. The first phase employed address-based sampling to recruit more than 1,700 households for a one-day personal travel survey, and a sub-sample participated with global position system (GPS) and on-board diagnostic (OBD) loggers installed in their vehicles (282 vehicles) for one week. The purpose of phase one was to better understand the impact of vehicle emissions on air quality in the PM2.5 nonattainment region. Many of the households participating in the vehicle GPS/OBD portion of phase one were asked to participate in phase two. ## Drive Cycle Processing and Filtering NREL has developed a GPS data filtration routine to filter erroneous data points in individual drive cycles sourced from GPS devices mounted in vehicles. 2017 National Household Travel Survey - Arizona Add-On

# 2017 National Household Travel Survey – Arizona Add-On The Arizona add-on survey supplements the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) with additional household samples and detailed travel behavior for an assigned travel day. ## Data Collection Agency The Federal Highway Administration conducted the NHTS and corresponding add-on surveys. ## Methodology This survey documents the demographic, attitudinal, and travel behavior for all members of 2,987 households, as collected from April 2016 to April 2017. Daily travel details provide insight into work and school commutes, non-emergency medical trips, shopping trips, and even how travel differs in the summer and on weekends as compared to a typical weekday when school is in session. When statistically weighted to adjust for survey biases, the data demographically represents all Americans and is appropriate for analysis at the national and census region levels. ## Survey Records Survey records include a total of 6,081 participants. ## Transportation Data The NHTS Arizona add-on data package contains a demographic and socioeconomic composition of 6,081 people from 2,987 households in Arizona, as well as detailed information on the travel behavior of each household for a designated 24-hour period. 2017 Puget Sound Regional Travel Study

# 2017 Puget Sound Regional Travel Study The 2017 Puget Sound Regional Travel Study collected household- and person-level activity and travel pattern information from residents throughout the Puget Sound Regional Council's four-county region in Washington State. It followed the [2014-2015 Puget Sound Regional Travel Study](https://www.nrel.gov/transportation/secure-transportation-data/tsdc-puget-sound-travel-study), starting a planned six-year data collection that includes 2019 and 2021. The multiyear program's goal is to maintain an updated source of household travel behavior data that: - Supports modeling and planning needs - Facilitates trend analysis over time - Allows for regular study design updates to integrate evolving data collection methods and emerging travel behaviors and transportation issues. ## Data Collection Agency The Puget Sound Regional Council conducted the study. ## Methodology The 2017 study featured both the design and administration of a one-day household travel diary (approximately 80% of households before data cleaning) and a seven-day smartphone global positioning system (GPS) diary (approximately 20% of households before data cleaning). It combined data collection methods, including smartphone, online, and telephone. 2019 and 2022 Twin Cities Travel Behavior Inventory Surveys

# 2019 and 2022 Twin Cities Travel Behavior Inventory Surveys To help local and regional planning agencies understand shifting demographics and travel patterns, surveys were conducted in Minnesota’s greater Twin Cities region in 2019 and 2022. Survey results aided the Metropolitan Council in proposing practical transportation investments, preparing competitive grant applications, and prioritizing improvements to best fit regional needs. ## Data Collection Agency RSG conducted the surveys for the Metropolitan Council. ## Survey Methodology These mixed-mode surveys focused on bus, rail, car, micromobility, ride-hailing, and walking. Designed as household travel surveys, they were carried out in English, Spanish, Karen, Oromo, Somali, and Hmong during two timeframes: Oct. 1, 2018—Sept. 30, 2019 and June 22, 2021—Feb. 5, 2022. Participants accessed the surveys using a smartphone-based app, website, or call center. A questionnaire captured data about demographics, daily travel activities, and typical transportation patterns to inform model updates and gain information about emerging behavioral changes such as electric vehicle adoption and teleworking frequency. It also addressed the impacts of COVID-19 on participants’ typical travel behavior. ## Survey Records, Data, and Documentation Survey records include a total of 31,251 participants—16,152 participants from 7,837 households during the 2019 survey and 15,099 participants from 7,952 households during the 2022 survey.

2022 Central California Travel Study

# 2022 Central California Travel Study The 2022 Central California Travel Study collected demographic and travel pattern information to better understand household travel behavior in the state’s San Joaquin Valley region. ## Data Collection Agency The Fresno Council of Governments conducted the household travel study in collaboration with metropolitan planning organizations in Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, and Tulare counties in California. ## Survey Methodology The two-part study consisted of a survey and a travel diary. The survey gathered data on household demographic composition and typical travel behaviors. The travel diary gathered individual travel data during a specified travel period for all members of a given household. ## Travel Diary Methods Households with smartphones were encouraged to complete their travel diaries using the rMove smartphone app for up to seven consecutive days. Households without smartphones or those unwilling to participate via smartphone completed their travel diaries online (using the web-version of rMove) or by calling the survey call center. These households reported travel for one day (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday). ## Recruitment Sampling Methods The majority of the recruitment was conducted via address-based sampling, a type of probability sampling, with a focus on reaching county-level targets in collaboration with metropolitan planning organizations in the region. Supplemental sampling methods, primarily non-probability, were employed during all waves of data collection to improve survey representation. The supplemental sample included targeted outreach to hard-to-survey populations via transit rider email lists; local housing authorities; Nichols Research, a California-based market research firm; and the Ipsos™ KnowledgePanel, an online random probability panel. 2022 Kauai Ground Transportation Survey

# 2022 Kauai Ground Transportation Survey The 2022 Kauai Ground Transportation Survey was designed to improve understanding of the transportation preferences of residents and visitors of the Hawaiian island of Kauai. For residents of Kauai, the survey focused on mode-choice decisions for commute, leisure, and shopping activities and whether they would consider using alternative modes instead of driving if such options were available. For visitors, the survey focused on whether they would consider alternatives to rental cars if such options were available. Ultimately, survey results will inform the development of sustainable transportation strategies for the island. ## Data Collection Agency NREL and the Kauai Office of Economic Development conducted the study as part of the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project. ## Survey Methodology The survey was conducted July—October 2022. Respondents were recruited via direct email invitation, a press release on the Kauai County website and Facebook page, and posters at community outreach events. ## Survey Records, Data, and Documentation Survey records include 1,437 participants.

2022 National Household Travel Survey - Oahu Add-On

# 2022 National Household Travel Survey – Oahu Add-On The Oahu add-on survey supplements the 2022 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) with additional household samples and detailed travel behavior for an assigned travel day. ## Data Collection Agency The Federal Highway Administration conducted the NHTS and corresponding add-on surveys. ## Survey Methodology The 2022 NHTS, which covered assigned travel dates from January 2022 to January 2023, collected data on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of households as well as detailed information on travel behavior nationwide. State transportation departments and metropolitan planning agencies—like the Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization—had the opportunity to purchase extra household samples as part of the NHTS add-on program. These additional samples, along with national samples collected in the add-on areas, are compiled for use in transportation planning, forecasting, and research. ## Survey Records, Data, and Documentation Survey records include 7,397 participants from 3,170 households in Oahu, Hawaii, as well as detailed information on the travel behavior of each household for a designated 24-hour period. The survey logged over 14,868 trips totaling 165,000 vehicle miles traveled.

2022 Next-Generation National Household Travel Survey - Origin-Destination Data Addendum for the Oahu Region

# 2022 Next-Generation National Household Travel Survey – Origin-Destination Data Addendum for the Oahu Region The 2022 Next-Generation National Household Travel Survey – Origin-Destination Data Addendum for the Oahu Region covers the Hawaiian island of Oahu and five counties in surrounding islands. An addendum to the nationwide version of the study conducted in 2019, this regional survey provided additional information and spatial granularity about people’s movements to, from, and within the areas under study. ## Data Collection Agency The survey was conducted for the Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization. ## Survey Methodology Data were collected in two zones: the core area (census blocks in the island of Oahu) and the halo area (five counties in adjacent Hawaiian islands). All trips were assigned an origin zone and a destination zone, as well as a travel mode, purpose, and distance. Sociodemographic information related to age, income, and gender was also collected. ## Survey Records, Data, and Documentation Survey records include 1,154,167,619 trips.

# 2023 University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez National Institute for Congestion Reduction Study The 2023 University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez National Institute for Congestion Reduction (NCIR) Study provided insight into the travel patterns and associated energy consumption of participants. Study results helped researchers identify opportunities for the development of policies that could incentivize the use of alternative modes of travel such as transit and micromobility. Such travel modes reduce congestion by reducing the miles traveled by privately owned vehicles in urban and rural areas. The [National Institute for Congestion Reduction](https://nicr.usf.edu/) provides multimodal congestion reduction strategies through real-world deployments that leverage advances in technology, big data science, and innovative transportation options to optimize the efficiency and reliability of the transportation system for all users. ## Data Collection Agency The University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez conducted the study. ## Survey Methodology The study was conducted in Spanish. Data collection was enabled via the open-source [NREL OpenPATH platform](https://www.nrel.gov/transportation/openpath). The resulting dataset consists of partially automated travel diaries—combining sensed and surveyed data reflecting patterns of multimodal, end-to-end, individual human mobility—as well as demographic and socioeconomic information from the 17 participants. ## Survey Records, Data, and Documentation Study records include 17 participants. # 2024 University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez Civic Innovation Challenge Study The 2024 University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez Civic Innovation Challenge (CIVIC) Study provided insight into the travel patterns and associated energy consumption of participants. Study results helped researchers identify opportunities for the development of shared mobility strategies—such as collaborative ride-sharing programs—that could address the mobility needs of rural communities in Puerto Rico. The Civic Innovation Challenge is a multiagency, federal government research and action competition that funds ready-to-implement, research-based pilot projects that have the potential for scalable, sustainable, and transferable impact on community-identified priorities. ## Data Collection Agency The University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez conducted the study. ## Survey Methodology The study was conducted in Spanish. Data collection was enabled via the open-source [NREL OpenPATH platform](https://www.nrel.gov/transportation/openpath). Baseline vs. DER Scenario

Projections and associated uncertainty estimates are generated for a variety of user-selectable EV charging sessions, electricity tariffs, subsidy levels, revenue schemes, charging station configurations, and on-site solar and/or storage options. The outputs are presented in CHIP's web portal browser in the form of easily interpretable graphics (interactive graphs and bar charts) that facilitate convenient comparison among different scenarios to aid decision-making. The user should bring assumptions for modeling on simulation planning horizon, number of EV charging sessions per year, electricity costs (energy and demand charge rates; flat versus time-of-use rate), site capital costs (equipment for EV chargers and transformer), solar PV, and battery energy storage (kW).

# 2003 Interstate 595 Vehicle Trip-Length Study The 2003 Vehicle Trip-Length Study focused on Interstate 595 between Davie Road and University Drive in Florida. Survey participants answered questions about their trip's origin and destination—including the type of location such as work, home, store, etc.—the on- and off-ramps used, how many people were in the car, and the type of vehicle. The survey also collected household demographic data such as annual household income, available vehicles, the number of people living in their household, and the number of workers in their household above the age of 16. It also asked if they would use proposed bus-only lanes or train service along the corridor, if available. ## Data Collection Agency The survey was conducted by and for the Florida Department of Transportation. ## Survey Methodology The survey was conducted via mail and online in March 2003. ## Survey Records, Data, and Documentation Survey records include 7,917 participants.
