Development of superconducting YBa2Cu3O(x) wires with low resistance electrical contacts

Materials exhibiting superconductivity above liquid nitrogen temperatures (77 K) will enable new applications of this phenomena. One of the first commercial applications of this technology will be superconducting magnets for medical imaging. However, a large number of aerospace applications of the high temperature superconducting materials have also been identified. These include magnetic suspension and balance of models in wind tunnels and resistanceless leads to anemometers. The development of superconducting wires fabricated from the ceramic materials is critical for these applications. The progress in application of a patented fiber process developed by Clemson University for the fabrication of superconducting wires is reviewed. The effect of particle size and heat treatment on the quality of materials is discussed. Recent advances made at Christopher Newport College in the development of micro-ohm resistance electrical contacts which are capable of carrying the highest reported direct current to this material is presented.

757 Fly-By-Wire Demonstrator Flight Test

The Boeing Company modified a production 757-200 to emulate the 777 fly-by-wire control laws in order to evaluate the operation and performance of the 777 FBW flight control laws in flight. Following installation and checkout of the FBW system, testing began in March, 1992. Flight testing is currently planned to continue through August, 1992. The conventional 757 longitudinal flight control system is retained but controlled by only the captain’s column. The fly-by-wire system is evaluated by the pilot in the first officer’s seat and the safety pilot function is conducted from the captain’s seat. The flight test FBW longitudinal system is a 2-channel flight control system. The first officer’s column drives the current 757 left and right flight control computers (autopilots) which are modified to act as FBW computers. These FBW computers, which emulate the 777-200 FBW control laws, drive their respective autopilot actuators to control the airplane pitch axis. Directional FBW control laws arc emulated in the existing 757 yaw dampers, with corresponding modifications to the normal 757 directional control system. This paper presents a summary of the airplane FBW modifications and the flight test program to evaluate/validate the 777 FBW flight control laws.

NASA requirements and applications environments for electrical power wiring

While a large data base for electrical arc track-resistant wire insulation exists for aircraft electrical power systems, comparable spacecraft-pertinent data are in limited supply. Existing insulation systems have been found to arc-track at potentials as low as 28 V dc. An account is presently given of the electrical, thermal, mechanical, and operational requirements for specification and testing of candidate wiring systems for spacecraft applications.

Some Effects of Exposure to Exhaust-gas Streams on Emittance and Thermoelectric Power of Bare-wire Platinum Rhodium - Platinum Thermocouples

Thermocouples were exposed to exhaust gases from the combustion of propane, 72-octane gasoline, and JP-4 fuel. Exposure increased the emissivity of the thermocouple wire, which increased its radiation error. Two methods are presented for determining the emittance of the wires. The emissivity of a clean platinum rhodium-platinum thermocouple was approximately 0.2 in the temperature range investigated, while the emittance of an exposed thermocouple coated with exhaust residue was about 0.5. The exposure caused negligible change in the thermoelectric power of the thermocouples.

Exploratory Engine Test of Transpiration-cooled Turbine-rotor Blade with Wire-cloth Shell

Engine tests were made on a transpiration-cooled blade that was fabricated from an internal load-carrying member with an external surface of wire cloth. After operation in the engine, some damage was noted at the tip region of the trailing edge of the blades. On other sections of the blade, the wire cloth did not appear greatly overheated, and it appeared that satisfactory chordwise temperature distribution was provided by orifices in the blade base.

The Measurement of Fluctuations of Air Speed by the Hot-Wire Anemometer

The hot-wire anemometer suggests itself as a promising method for measuring the fluctuating air velocities found in turbulent flow. The only obstacle is the presence of a lag due to the limited energy input which makes even a fairly small wire incapable of following rapid fluctuations with accuracy. This paper gives the theory of the lag and describes an experimental arrangement for compensating for the lag for frequencies up to 100 or more per second when the amplitude of the fluctuation is not too great. An experimental test of the accuracy of compensation and some results obtained with the apparatus in a wind-tunnel air stream are described. While the apparatus is very bulky in its present form, it is believed possible to develop a more portable arrangement. (author)

Specification and testing for power by wire aircraft

A power by wire aircraft is one in which all active functions other than propulsion are implemented electrically. Other nomenclature are 'all electric airplane,' or 'more electric airplane.' What is involved is the task of developing and certifying electrical equipment to replace existing hydraulics and pneumatics. When such functions, however, are primary flight controls which are implemented electrically, new requirements are imposed that were not anticipated by existing power system designs. Standards of particular impact are the requirements of ultra-high reliability, high peak transient bi-directional power flow, and immunity to electromagnetic interference and lightning. Not only must the electromagnetic immunity of the total system be verifiable, but box level tests and meaningful system models must be established to allow system evaluation. This paper discusses some of the problems, the system modifications involved, and early results in establishing wiring harness and interface susceptibility requirements.

Simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain using four connecting wires

This paper describes a new signal-conditioning technique for measuring strain and temperature which uses fewer connecting wires than conventional techniques. Simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain has been achieved by using thermocouple wire to connect strain gages to signal conditioning. This signal conditioning uses a new method for demultiplexing sampled analog signals and the Anderson current loop circuit. Theory is presented along with data to confirm that strain gage resistance change is sensed without appreciable error because of thermoelectric effects. Furthermore, temperature is sensed without appreciable error because of voltage drops caused by strain gage excitation current flowing through the gage resistance.

ESTEC wiring test programme materials related properties

Electrical wires are considered as EEE parts and are covered within the ESA SCC specification series (ESA SCC 3901/XXX). This specification defines the principal properties of the wires including insulation/lay-up and electrical properties. Some additional space related materials requirements are also included, requirements such as outgassing and silver plating thickness. If a project has additional materials requirements over and above those covered by the relevant SCC specification, then additional testing is required. This is especially true for crewed spacecraft. The following topics are discussed in this context: additional requirements for manned spacecraft; flammability; arc tracking; thermal decomposition; microbial surface growth; and ageing.

Cryogenic on-orbit liquid depot storage acquisition and transfer (COLD-SAT) experiment subsystem instrumentation and wire harness design report

Subcritical cryogens such as liquid hydrogen (LH2) and liquid oxygen (LO2) are required for space based transportation propellant, reactant, and life support systems. Future long-duration space missions will require on-orbit systems capable of long-term cryogen storage and efficient fluid transfer capabilities. COLD-SAT, which stands for cryogenic orbiting liquid depot-storage acquisition and transfer, is a free-flying liquid hydrogen management flight experiment. Experiments to determine optimum methods of fluid storage and transfer will be performed on the COLD-SAT mission. The success of the mission is directly related to the type and accuracy of measurements made. The instrumentation and measurement techniques used are therefore critical to the success of the mission. This paper presents the results of the COLD-SAT experiment subsystem instrumentation and wire harness design effort. Candidate transducers capable of fulfilling the COLD-SAT experiment measurement requirements are identified. Signal conditioning techniques, data acquisition requirements, and measurement uncertainty analysis are presented. Electrical harnessing materials and wiring techniques for the instrumentation designed to minimize heat conduction to the cryogenic tanks and provide optimum measurement accuracy are listed.

High temperature polymer dielectric film-wire insulation

The highlights of the program are outlined including two major accomplishments. TRW identified and demonstrated the potential of two aromatic/heterocyclic polymers to have an outstanding and superior combination of electrical, thermal, and chemical resistance properties versus state-of-the-art Kapton for spacecraft and/or aircraft dielectric insulation applications. (Supporting data is provided in tables.) Feasibility was demonstrated for supporting/enabling technologies such as ceramic coatings, continuous film casting, and conductor wire wrapping, which are designed to accelerate qualification and deployment of the new wire insulation materials for USAF systems applications during the mid- to late-1990's.
