Vessels Irradiation Experimental Campaign

The purpose of this report is to document the neutron flux field characterization experiments and to provide experiment data to validate radiation transport models. To predict material damage, irradiation experiments expose materials to known radiation fields to correlate the exposure to damage effects. As a part of irradiation experiments, the neutron field in the experiment must be well characterized; this characterization includes effects like room return. Only the neutron component of the 252 Cf sources is considered in theses measurements and calculations.

Challenges and Opportunities for the Development of Commercial Maritime Surface Vessel Nuclear Propulsion (CMNP)

Maritime transport and trade are currently responsible for producing nearly 1 billion metric tons of CO2 emissions annually, representing 2.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. While maritime shipping is acknowledged as the most efficient carrier of goods in terms of its costs and carbon intensity, the sector relies overwhelmingly on the use of heavy fuel oil (HFO). This fuel source currently is unmatched in terms of its global availability, safety, security of supply, price, and energy density. Combined, these characteristics are responsible for the outsized contribution of the sector to the global economy: roughly 90% of all transported goods spend time at sea. Commercial maritime nuclear propulsion provides opportunities to transition maritime trade to clean energy but also comes with challenges. Both are covered in this report based on 60+ interviews with professionals from the maritime and nuclear energy sectors.

Capture of Organic Iodides from Vessel Off-Gas Streams

In nuclear waste reprocessing, radioactive iodine is released in both organic and inorganic forms into off-gas streams. Due to its properties of long half-life and potential accumulation in human bodies, radioactive iodine is required to be removed from off-gas streams by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). In this study, the removal of organic iodides using two prototype silver (Ag) adsorbents, i.e., reduced Ag functionalized silica aerogel (Ag 0 -aerogel) and reduced Ag exchanged mordenite (Ag 0 Z), is investigated through a combination of experimental and modeling studies.

Metallurgical Analysis and Forward Modeling of Weld Distortion in SMR Containment Vessels

This work aimed to apply Sandia’s expertise in metallurgy and modeling to enable the use of hybrid laser arc welding for building nuclear reactor containment structures, via a collaboration with Holtec International. Experimental observations were coupled with finite element analysis to resolve microstructure development, mechanical properties, distortion, and residual stress in welds relevant to the production of the Holtec SMR-160. High residual stresses were observed in welds that were not subjected to preheat. Meanwhile, the microstructure of the welds generally exhibited a narrow heat affected zone relative to conventional arc welds. FEA appeared to be effective in simulating the thermal/mechanical conditions that occur during hybrid laser arc welding of simplified and instrumented test welds. Subsequently, FEA was used to perform sensitivity analyses for various weld geometries that would be prohibitively costly to assess with physical experiments. Insights from the study were used to inform Holtec’s welding process, and successful production welds were performed in 2025.
