Electro-Mechanical Simulation of a Large Aperture MOEMS Fabry-Perot Tunable Filter

We are developing a micro-machined electrostatically actuated Fabry-Perot tunable filter with a large clear aperture for application in high through-put wide-field imaging spectroscopy and lidar systems. In the first phase of this effort, we are developing key components based on coupled electro-mechanical simulations. In particular, the movable etalon plate design leverages high coating stresses to yield a flat surface in drum-head tension over a large diameter (12.5 mm). In this approach, the cylindrical silicon movable plate is back etched, resulting in an optically coated membrane that is suspended from a thick silicon support ring. Understanding the interaction between the support ring, suspended membrane, and coating is critical to developing surfaces that are flat to within stringent etalon requirements. In this work, we present the simulations used to develop the movable plate, spring suspension system, and electrostatic actuation mechanism. We also present results from tests of fabricated proof of concept components.

Fiber Grating Coupled Light Source Capable of Tunable, Single Frequency Operation

Fiber Bragg grating coupled light sources can achieve tunable single-frequency (single axial and lateral spatial mode) operation by correcting for a quadratic phase variation in the lateral dimension using an aperture stop. The output of a quasi-monochromatic light source such as a Fabry Perot laser diode is astigmatic. As a consequence of the astigmatism, coupling geometrics that accommodate the transverse numerical aperture of the laser are defocused in the lateral dimension, even for apsherical optics. The mismatch produces the quadratic phase variation in the feedback along the lateral axis at the facet of the laser that excites lateral modes of higher order than the TM 00 . Because the instability entails excitation of higher order lateral submodes, single frequency operation also is accomplished by using fiber Bragg gratings whose bandwidth is narrower than the submode spacing. This technique is particularly pertinent to the use of lensed fiber gratings in lieu of discrete coupling optics. Stable device operation requires overall phase match between the fed-back signal and the laser output. The fiber Bragg grating acts as a phase-preserving mirror when the Bragg condition is met precisely. The phase-match condition is maintained throughout the fiber tuning range by matching the Fabry-Perot axial mode wavelength to the passband center wavelength of the Bragg grating.

Contributions of a Tunable Diode Laser Instrument (ATLAS) to the Stratospheric Ozone Depletion Question

The Airborne Tunable Laser Absorption Spectrometer - ATLAS - was designed and built at the NASA Ames Research Center and operates on the NASA ER-2 high altitude research aircraft. ATLAS has taken part in a number of important polar and mid-latitude research campaigns, since 1987, focused on various aspects of stratospheric ozone chemistry and dynamics. The chief measurement carried out by the ATLAS second harmonic diode laser spectrometer is of the important atmospheric tracer N2O. Using N2O as an inert tracer we have been able to gain significant new information on polar vortex dynamics and on the correlations of several important long-lived tracers in the stratosphere. The correlation of N2O with NOy (total reactive nitrogen) has been shown to be linear for a great variety of unperturbed stratospheric conditions, and the breakdown of this correlation has been used to detect denitrification by PSCs in the polar vortex, especially in the Antarctic spring. Denitrification is an important step in the process of ozone hole formation in the austral spring. Correlations of N2O with CFCs and CH4 have led to improved estimates of atmospheric lifetimes of these important molecules. Finally the correlation of N2O with CO2, the latter now being measured with great precision by a new instrument on the ER-2, has led to a significant new tool for studying horizontal and vertical mixing in the lower stratosphere, a tool which is very useful in assessing the potential effects of high speed civil transport aircraft in the lower stratosphere. A new, light-weight version of ATLAS is currently being built for unmanned high altitude aircraft, specifically the new Perseus vehicle. We will give a brief description of this effort.

Application of Tunable Diode Laser Spectrometry for Isotopic Analysis

Lead-salt tunable diode lasers are now commercially available with operating temperatures above 77 K and excellent single-mode characteristics which make them very useful for spectroscopy in the mid-IR spectral range. Using these lasers for absorption measurements in the 4.3 micrometer spectral region we have made accurate measurements of isotopic abundances in CO2. The method involves assembly language controlled data acquisition of spectra of selected adjacent isotopic rotational lines, an etalon spectral frequency calibration technique, the fitting of multiple Voigt profiles to the data, and the ratioing of absorbances from simultaneously acquired sample and reference data scans. The accuracy achieved is better than 0.4% for the C-13/C-12 ratio and 1% for the O-18/O-16 ratio. Higher accuracy is expected from improvements now being implemented.

Tunable Optical Properties of Metal Nanoparticle Sol-Gel Composites

We demonstrate that the linear and non-linear optical properties of sol-gels containing metal nanoparticles are highly tunable with porosity. Moreover, we extend the technique of immersion spectroscopy to inhomogeneous hosts, such as aerogels, and determine rigorous bounds for the average fractional composition of each component, i.e., the porosity of the aerogel, or equivalently, for these materials, the catalytic dispersion. Sol-gels containing noble metal nanoparticles were fabricated and a significant blue-shift in the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) was observed upon formation of an aerogel, as a result of the decrease in the dielectric constant of the matrix upon supercritical extraction of the solvent. However, as a result of chemical interface damping and aggregation this blue-shift does not strictly obey standard effective medium theories. Mitigation of these complications is achieved by avoiding the use of alcohol and by annealing the samples in a reducing atmosphere.

In Situ Measurements of N2O and CH4 During SOLVE on the ER-2 Using a New Tunable Diode Laser Instrument

This report is the final report for Cooperative Agreement NCC2-1105: 'In Situ Measurements of N2O and CH4 during SOLVE on the ER-2 using a new tunable diode laser instrument.' The tasks outlined in the proposal are listed below with a brief comment. The publications and the conference presentations are listed. Finally the important publications are attached. The Cooperative Agreement made possible a research effort to produce high precision and high accuracy in situ measurements of methane and nitrous oxide on the ER-2 during the SOLVE field campaign and to analyze these measurements. These measurements of CH4 and N2O were of utmost importance to studies of the ozone losses in the Arctic winter and spring. The concentrations measured over a large spatial and temporal range allowed the separation of the dynamical and chemical ozone loss. The most important results of the SOLVE program were contained in two scientific papers. This Cooperative Agreement allowed the participation of the Argus instrument in the program and the analysis of the data.

A Comparison of MOCLD With PLD Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 Thin Films on LaAlO3 for Tunable Microwave Applications

Historically, tunable dielectric devices using thin crystalline Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 (BST) films deposited on lattice-matched substrates, such as LaAlO3, have generally been grown using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Highly oriented BST films can be grown by PLD but large projects are hampered by constraints of deposition area, deposition time and expense. The Metal-Organic Chemical Liquid Deposition (MOCLD) process allows for larger areas, faster turnover and lower cost. Several BST films deposited on LaAlO3 by MOCLD have been tested in 16 GHz coupled microstrip phase shifters. They can be compared with many PLD BST films tested in the same circuit design. The MOCLD phase shifter performance of 293 deg. phase shift with 53 V/micron dc bias and a figure of merit of 47 deg./dB is comparable to the most highly oriented PLD BST films. The PLD BST films used here have measured XRD full-width-at-half-maxima (FWHM) as low as 0.047 deg.. The best FWHM of these MOCLD BST films has been measured to be 0.058 deg.

Micromachined Tunable Fabry-Perot Filters for Infrared Astronomy

Micromachined Fabry-Perot tunable filters with a large clear aperture (12.5 to 40 mm) are being developed as an optical component for wide-field imaging 1:1 spectroscopy. This program applies silicon micromachining fabrication techniques to miniaturize Fabry-Perot filters for astronomical science instruments. The filter assembly consists of a stationary etalon plate mated to a plate in which the etalon is free to move along the optical axis on silicon springs attached to a stiff silicon support ring. The moving etalon is actuated electrostatically by electrode pairs on the fixed and moving etalons. To reduce mass, both etalons are fabricated by applying optical coatings to a thin freestanding silicon nitride film held flat in drumhead tension rather than to a thick optical substrate. The design, electro-mechanical modeling, fabrication, and initial results will be discussed. The potential application of the miniature Fabry-Perot filters will be briefly discussed with emphasis on the detection of extra-solar planets.

Tunable Solid-Etalon Filter for the ICESat/GLAS 532 nm Channel Lidar Receiver

The Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) was launched into Earth orbit on board the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) on January 12, 2003. GLAS is a laser altimeter designed to measure ice-sheet topography and associated temporal changes, as well as cloud and atmospheric properties. Each (of the three identical) GLAS lasers is a diode pumped, Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with energy levels of 75 mJ (1064 nm) and 35 mJ (532 nm). The infrared pulse is used for both surface altimetry and atmospheric measurements while the green pulse is used primarily for atmospheric measurements. The receiver uses a 1 meter diameter telescope. We report on the tunable solid-etalon filter used in the ICESat/GLAS 532 nm channel lidar receiver.

A Large Aperture Fabry-Perot Tunable Filter Based On Micro Opto Electromechanical Systems Technology

A research and development effort sponsored by the NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center (GSFC) is focused on applying Micro Opto Electromechanical Systems (MOEMS) technology to create a miniature Fabry-Perot tunable etalon for space and ground-based near infrared imaging spectrometer applications. Unlike previous devices developed for small-aperture telecommunications systems, the GSFC research is directed toward a novel 12 - 40 mm aperture for astrophysical studies, including emission line imaging of galaxies and nebulae, and multi-spectral redshift surveys in the 1.1 - 2.3 micron wavelength region. The MOEMS design features integrated electrostatic scanning of the 11-micron optical gap, and capacitance micrometry for closed loop control of parallelism within a 10-nm tolerance. The low thermal mass and inertia inherent in MOEMS devices allows for rapid cooling to the proposed 30 K operating temperature, and high frequency response. Achieving the proposed 6-nm aperture flatness (with an effective finesse of 50) represents the primary technical challenge in the current 12-mm prototype.

Difference-frequency-based tunable absorption spectrometer for detection of atmospheric formaldehyde

High-sensitivity detection of formaldehyde (CH2O) at 3.5315 micrometers (2831.64 cm-1) is reported with a diode-laser-pumped, fiber-coupled, periodically poled LiNbO3 spectroscopic source. This source replaced the Pb-salt diode laser Dewar assembly of an existing tunable diode-laser absorption spectrometer designed for ultrasensitive detection of CH2O. Spectra are recorded with 2f-modulation spectroscopy and zero-air rapid background subtraction. Initial measurements reported here, determined from multiple measurements of a flowing 7.7 parts per billion by volume (ppbv, parts in 10(9)) CH2O in air mixture, indicate replicate precisions as low as 0.24 ppbv.

High-Temperature Superconducting/Ferroelectric, Tunable Thin-Film Microwave Components

At the NASA Lewis Research Center, ferroelectric films such as SrTiO3 and Ba(sub x)Sr(sub 1-x)TiO3, are being used in conjunction with YBa(sub 2)Cu(sub 3)O(sub 7-delta) high-temperature superconducting thin films to fabricate tunable microwave components such as filters, phase shifters, and local oscillators. These structures capitalize on the variation of the dielectric constant of the ferroelectric film upon the application of a direct-current electric field, as well as on the low microwave losses of high-temperature superconductors relative to their conventional conductor counterparts. For example, the surface resistance for a YBa(sub 2)Cu(sub 3)O(sub 7-delta) thin film at 10 GHz and 77 K is more than two orders of magnitude lower than that of copper or gold at the same temperature and frequency. SrTiO3 and Ba(sub x)Sr(sub 1-x)TiO3 films are used because their crystal structure and lattice parameters are similar to those of YBa(sub 2)Cu(sub 3)O(sub 7-delta), thus enabling the growth of highly textured YBa(sub 2)Cu(sub 3)O(sub 7-delta) films with high critical current densities (i.e., greater than 1 MA/sq cm) on the underlying ferroelectric film, or alternatively, of highly textured ferroelectric film on the underlying YBa(sub 2)Cu(sub 3)O(sub 7-delta) film.

Tunable All-Solid-State Local Oscillators to 1900 GHz

We present a status report of an ongoing effort to develop robust tunable all-solid-state sources up to 1900 GHz for the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared (HIFI) on the Herschel Space Observatory. GaAs based multi-chip power amplifier modules at W-band are used to drive cascaded chains of multipliers. We have demonstrated performance from chains comprised of four doublers up to 1600 GHz as well as from a x2x3x3 chain to 1900 GHz. Measured peak output power of 23 (micro)W at 1782 GHz and 2.6 (micro)W at 1900 GHz has been achieved when the multipliers are cooled to 120K. The 1900 GHz tripler was pumped with a four anode tripler that produces a peak of 4 mW at 630 GHz when cooled to 120 K. We believe that these sources can now be used to pump hot electron bolometer (HEB) heterodyne mixers.ter (HEB) heterodyne mixers.

Tunable graded rod laser assembly

A tunable laser assembly including a pair of radially graded indexed optical segments aligned to focus the laser to form an external resonant cavity with an optical axis, the respective optical segments are retativity moveable along the optical axis and provide a variable et aion gap sufficient to permit variable tuning of the laser wavelength without altering the effective length of the resonant cavity. The gap also include a saturable absorbing material providing a passive mode-locking of the laser.
