Identification of Fe I lines in the ultraviolet solar spectrum

High-resolution ultraviolet echelle spectrograms of the sun obtained from a rocket-borne spectrograph have been used for the identification of Fe I absorption lines in the wavelength range 1770-2020 A. Wavelength measurements, with a precision of about 15 mA, are tabulated for 425 Fe I features, along with available laboratory wavelenghs or predicted wavelengths calculated from atomic energy level data. The classification system of Moore has been extended to include possible additional multiplets with 126 newly classified lines; 234 unclassified lines were observed and identified with laboratory Fe I spectra

Schlieren photographs and internal pressure distributions for three-dimensional sidewall-compression scramjet inlets at a Mach number of 6 in CF4

Three-dimensional sidewall-compression scramjet inlets with leading-edge sweeps of 30 deg and 70 deg were tested in the Langley Hypersonic CF4 Tunnel at a Mach number of 6 and a free-stream ratio of specific heats of 1.2. The parametric effects of leading-edge sweep, cowl position, contraction ratio, and Reynolds number were investigated. The models were instrumented with static pressure orifices distributed on the sidewalls, baseplate, and cowl. Schlieren movies were made of selected tunnel runs for flow visualization of the entrance plane and cowl region. Although these movies could not show the internal flow, the effect of the internal flow on the external flow was evident by way of spillage. The purpose is to provide a preliminary data release for the investigation. The models, facility, and testing methods are described, and the test matrix and a tabulation of tunnel runs are provided. Line plots highlighting the stated parametric effects and a representative set of schlieren photographs are presented without analysis.

Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) attitude measurements of the Interplanetary Dust Experiment

Analysis of the data from the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) Interplanetary Dust Experiment (IDE) sun sensors has allowed a confirmation of the attitude of LDEF during its first year in orbit. Eight observations of the yaw angle at specific times were made and are tabulated in this paper. These values range from 4.3 to 12.4 deg with maximum uncertainty of plus or minus 2.0 deg and an average of 7.9 deg. No specific measurements of pitch or roll were made but the data indicates that LDEF had an average pitch down attitude of less than 0.7 deg.

Hot and cold atmospheres for Vandenberg AFB, California (1973 version)

Extreme atmospheres, pertaining to summer (hot) and winter (cold) conditions for Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, are presented from 0- to 90-km altitudes. Computed values of pressure, e, kinetic temperature, virtual temperature, density, and relative differences (percentages from Vandenberg Reference Atmosphere, 1971 (VRA 71)) of the atmospheric parameters versus altitude are tabulated in increments of 250 m. Hydrostatic and gas law equations were used in conjunction with radiosonde and rocketsonde thermodynamic data in determining the vertical structure of the two atmospheric models. The summer-type density profile deviated from -9.0 percent (of the VRA-71) at the ground to 28.4 percent at 74.5-km altitude. The winter density profile went from 5.2 percent at the surface to -31.4 percent at 72 km.

Status of Solar Measurements and Data Reduction for Erb-nimbus 7

The status of the Total Solar Irradiance data obtained using the cavity radiometer aboard the Earth Radiation Budget experiment of the Nimbus 7 satellite is described. The ERB experiment has a number of sensors which measure the radiative fluxes (both shortwave and infrared) leaving the Earth as well as the solar channels. The complexity of the processing of the Earth-flux data, both wide and narrow angle has necessitated a reprocessing effort which produces the final data. Since the solar data is embedded in the same data stream and tape product as the Earth-flux data, it was not generally available in a format convenient for analysis as a separate product. Values for the final data product only are presented and a few remarks concerning the basic features of the data. There is no scientific conclusions presented here other than those directly related to the measurement results. A set of tabulated values is appended.

Characterization of the non axial thrust generated by large solid propellant rocket motors in three axis stabilized ascent

Nonaxial thrusts produced by solid rocket motors during three-axis stabilized attitude control have been determined from ascent experience on twenty three Burner II, Burner IIA and Block 5D-1 upper stage vehicles. A data base representing four different rocket motor designs (three spherical and one extended spherical) totaling twenty five three-axis stabilized firings is generated. Solid rocket motor time-varying resultant and lateral side force vector magnitudes, directions and total impulses, and roll torque couple magnitudes, directions, and total impulses are tabulated in the appendix. Population means and three sigma deviations are plotted. Existing applicable ground test side force and roll torque magnitudes and total impulses are evaluated and compared to the above experience data base. Within the spherical motor population, the selected AEDC ground test data consistently underestimated experienced motor side forces, roll torques and total impulses. Within the extended spherical motor population, the selected AEDC test data predicted experienced motor side forces, roll torques, and total impulses, with surprising accuracy considering the very small size of the test and experience populations.

K-shell photoionization cross-sections.

Approximate values for the threshold energies, threshold cross sections, and energy dependence of the cross sections for K-shell photoionization are tabulated for H, He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, and S in all stages of ionization. The approximation of these data is based on the assumptions that the threshold energy is a simple function of the nuclear charge and the number of electrons present in the atom, and that the threshold values and energy dependence of the cross sections are determined only by the threshold energy.

Kansas environmental and resource study: A Great Plains model. Extraction of agricultural statistics from ERTS-1 data of Kansas

The author has identified the following significant results. Wheat area, yield, and production statistics as derived from satellite image analysis, combined with a weather model, are presented for a ten county area in southwest Kansas. The data (representing the 1972-73 crop year) are compared for accuracy against both the USDA August estimate and its final (official) tabulation. The area estimates from imagery for both dryland and irrigated winter wheat were within 5% of the official figures for the same area, and predated them by almost one year. Yield on dryland wheat was estimated by the Thompson weather model to within 0.1% of the observed yield. A combined irrigated and dryland wheat production estimate for the ten county area was completed in July, 1973 and was within 1% of the production reported by USDA in February, 1974.

Ultraviolet solar spectrum /1889-1969 angstroms/

Six spectrograms of the solar spectrum were obtained in the region from 1800 to 1970 A at a resolving power of about 200,000, using a rocket-borne spectrograph with an echelle as the principal dispersing element. Data reduction has been completed for the region from 1889 to 1969 A, in which 732 features have been measured and tabulated along with available laboratory wavelengths which correspond reasonably with the solar features. Tracings of the spectra are also presented.-

Asteroid taxonomy and the distribution of the compositional types

Physical observations of minor planets documented in the TRIAD computer file are used to classify 752 objects into the broad compositional types C, S, M, E, R, and U (unclassifiable) according to the prescriptions adopted by Bowell et al. (1978). Diameters are computed from the photometric magnitude using radiometric and/or polarimetric data where available, or else from albedos characteristic of the indicated type. An analysis of the observational selection effects leads to tabulation of the actual number of asteroids, as a function of type and diameter, in each of 15 orbital element zones. For the whole main belt the population is 75% of type C, 15% of type S, and 10% of other types, with no belt-wide dependence of the mixing ratios on diameter. In some zones the logarithmic diameter-frequency relations are decidedly nonlinear. The relative frequency of S-type objects decreases smoothly outward through the main belt, with exponential scale length 0.5 AU. The rarer types show a more chaotic, but generally flatter, distribution over distance. Characteristic type distributions, contrasting with the background population, are found for the Eos, Koronis, Nysa and Themis families.

Theoretical energies for the n = 1 and 2 states of the helium isoelectronic sequence up to Z = 100

The unified method described previously for combining high-precision nonrelativistic variational calculations with relativistic and quantum electrodynamic corrections is applied to the 1s2 1S0, 1s2s 1S0, 1s2s 1S0, 1s2s 3S1, 1s2p 1P1, and 1s2p 3P(0.1,2) states of helium-like ions. Detailed tabulations are presented for all ions in the range Z = 2-100 and are compared with a wide range of experimental data up to (Kr-34)+. The results for (U-90)+ significantly alter the recent Lamb shift measurement of Munger and Gould (1986) from 70.4 + or - 8.3 to 71.0 + or - 8.3 eV, in comparison with a revised theoretical value of 74.3 + or - 0.4 eV. The improved agreement is due to the inclusion of higher order two-electron corrections in the present work.

ERTS applications in state land use planning

The progress made and limitations encountered in using ERTS-1 data for resource management in Ohio is surveyed. Photo-opto-electronic techniques were used with special facility equipment and resolution to 10-30 meters was required to determine strip mine features. Lake Erie's sediment patterns were detected along with flooding conditions, large scale vegetative damage caused by toxic air pollutants was identified, Ohio land use categories were tabulated and thematic map containing forested areas was derived. The experimental findings regarding utility/relevance assessment were ranked in 4 classes for all the applications involved. Preliminary recommendations for operational satellite earth resources survey data requirements are presented and data analysis and product dissemination are proposed to be centralized in conjunction with thermal IR data and an increased resolution.

Rescue and Preservation of Sample Data from the Apollo Missions to the Moon

Six Apollo missions landed on the Moon from 1969-72, returning to Earth 382 kg of lunar rock, soil, and core samples. These samples are among the best documented and preserved samples on Earth that have supported a robust research program for 45 years. From mission planning through sample collection, preliminary examination, and subsequent research, strict protocols and procedures are followed for handling and allocating Apollo subsamples, resulting in the production of vast amounts of documentation. Even today, hundreds of samples are allocated for research each year, building on the science foundation laid down by the early Apollo sample studies and combining new data from today's instrumentation, lunar remote sensing missions and lunar meteorites. Much sample information is available to researchers at curator.jsc.nasa.gov. Decades of analyses on lunar samples are published in LPSC proceedings volumes and other peer-reviewed journals, and tabulated in lunar sample compendia entries. However, for much of the 1969-1995 period, the processing documentation, individual and consortia analyses, and unpublished results exist only in analog forms or primitive digital formats that are either inaccessible or at risk of being lost forever because critical data from early investigators remain unpublished.

Analysis of high resolution satellite data for cosmic gamma ray bursts

Cosmic gamma ray bursts detected a germanium spectrometer on the low altitude satellite 1972-076B were surveyed. Several bursts with durations ranging from approximately 0.032 to 15 seconds were found and are tabulated. The frequency of occurrence/intensity distribution of these events was compared with the S to the -3/2 power curve of confirmed events. The longer duration events fall above the S to the -3/2 power curve of confirmed events, suggesting they are perhaps not all true cosmic gamma-ray bursts. The narrow duration events fall closely on the S to the -3/2 power curve. The survey also revealed several counting rate spikes, with durations comparable to confirmed gamma-ray bursts, which were shown to be of magnetospheric origin. Confirmation that energetic electrons were responsible for these bursts was achieved from analysis of all data from the complete payload of gamma-ray and energetic particle detectors on board the satellite. The analyses also revealed that the narrowness of the spikes was primarily spatial rather than temporal in character.

Models for the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn

Numerical models of the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn have been created for use in the development of design criteria for space vehicles intended to investigate these plants. These models provide a basis for the assessment of entry heating, the transmission and emission of radiation, and structural and aerodynamic interactions. The model atmospheres are based on data and analyses published in the literature through 1970. The composition is duscussed, and the relative amounts of each molecular species are tabulated for nominal and extreme cases. The structure of the atmospheric regions is discussed, and the principal features of one nominal and two limiting models for each planet are indicated. The models are illustrated by pressure-temperature profiles which also display the major cloud layers.
