Engine investigation of an air-cooled turbine rotor blade incorporating impingement-cooled leading edge, chordwise passages, and a slotted trailing edge

Experimental temperatures are presented for an air-cooled turbine rotor blade tested in an engine. The data were obtained for turbine stator inlet temperatures from 2000 to 2500 F and for turbine-inlet gas pressures from 32 to 46 psia. Average and local blade heat-transfer data are correlated. Potential allowable increases in gas temperature are also discussed.

L-band orthogonal-mode crossed-slot antenna and VHF crossed-loop antenna

A low gain, circularly polarized, L-band antenna; a low gain, linealy polarized, L-band antenna; and a low gain, circularly polarized, upper hemisphere, VHF satellite communications antenna intended for airborne applications are described. The text includes impedance and antenna radiation pattern data, along with physical description of the construction of the antennas.

Analysis and testing of two-dimensional slot nozzle ejectors with variable area mixing sections

Finite difference computer techniques have been used to calculate the detailed performance of air to air two-dimensional ejectors with symmetric variable area mixing sections and coaxial coverging primary nozzles. The analysis of the primary nozzle assumed correct expansion of the flow and is suitable for subsonic and slightly supersonic velocity levels. The variation of the mixing section channel walls is assumed to be gradual so that the static pressure can be assumed uniform on planes perpendicular to the axis. A test program was run to provide two-dimensional ejector test data for verification of the computer analysis. A primary converging nozzle with a discharge geometry of 0.125 inch x 8.0 inch was supplied with 600 SCFM of air at about 35 psia and 180 F. This nozzle was combined with two mixing section geometries with throat sizes of 1.25 inch x 8.0 inch and 1.875 inch x 8.0 inch and was tested at a total of 11 operating points.

Analytical study of takeoff and landing performance for a jet STOL transport configuration with full-span, externally blown, triple-slotted flaps

Takeoff and landing performance characteristics and field length requirements were determined analytically for a jet STOL transport configuration with full-span, externally blown, tripleslotted flaps. The configuration had a high wing, high T-tail, and four pod-mounted high-bypass-ratio turbofan engines located under and forward of the wing. One takeoff and three approach and landing flap settings were evaluated. The effects of wing loading, thrust-to-weight ratio, weight, ambient temperature, altitude on takeoff and landing field length requirements are discussed.

Experimental and theoretical investigation of a slotted noise shield model for wind tunnel walls

Tests at Mach 6 and 8 have been conducted on a model of a wind tunnel sound radiation shield which consists of interchangeable circular and wedge-shaped longitudinal rods with gaps between the rods for boundary layer removal. In view of the large effective sweep angle of the circular rods with respect to the local flow, the boundary layer behavior was surprisingly well represented by swept cylinder theory. Laminar flow was maintained up to a maximum local unit Reynolds number of 8 million per foot which would presumably be independent of model length for a given rod diameter by analogy with results on swept cylinders. Reduction in wind-tunnel sound levels within the shielded region of the circular rod model were about 90% of the maximum possible reduction for an ideal shield.
