High-Fidelity CFD Assessments of Flow Resistance in a 61-Pin Wire-Wrapped Assembly with Partially Blocked Channels

The examination of thermal-hydraulic behaviors in wire-wrapped rod bundles continues to be an active area of research. The sodium fast reactor, a prominent candidate in next-generation nuclear designs, utilizes a hexagonal configuration of wire-wrapped fuel pins. Here, the potential for channel blockage within this compact arrangement poses a significant safety challenge, spurring a number of recent experimental and computational investigations to evaluate its impact on flow and heat transfer. The present work aims to benchmark the high-fidelity NekRS computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver in predicting the pressure drops associated with substantial blockages, using available experimental data as a reference. A 61-pin wire-wrapped fuel assembly with two flow blockage configurations has been simulated and investigated at a range of low to moderate Reynolds numbers (487 ≤ Re ≤ 14 600). The NekRS solver demonstrates an exponential reduction of spatial discretization error with increasing polynomial order. The high level of agreement between the numerical results and measured data confirms the accuracy and consistency of the present numerical approach. This benchmark study establishes the capability of NekRS to perform reliable hydrodynamic simulations for sodium fast reactor applications and supports its use in design, licensing, and safety analyses.

Validation of Recent Changes in Actinide Evaluations U-235, U-233, Pu-239 [Slides]

This presentation discusses U-235 updates, including fluctuations in the fission cross section in the URR range that were refined to represent measured data following the Paradela et al. evaluation. There were small changes to the low-energy resonances to improve the fit to measured capture data from RPI (capture reduced by 5% from 0.06-7.8 eV, by 7.7% from 7.8-11 eV) and there was a very small change to the thermal nu-bar within uncertainties. Discrete level data are stored in MF=6 (format requirement, no impact on calculations) and issues leading to negative eigenvalues in cross-covariances in the RR have been sorted out. In conclusion, many improvements were made to evaluated nuclear data of actinides in the resonance region and above, such as minor changes to U-235 including assessment of changes that depend on the finalization of the O-16 evaluation. U-233 improvements show significant progress in performance and some further improvement might be needed at intermediate energies. Pu-239 ORNL/IAEA evaluation is promising; however, more work is needed.

Nuclear Data: From Measurement, Evaluation, Processing to Practical Applications [Slides]

Any analysis, design of a nuclear system will be as good as the knowledge of the nuclear data used whether differential and integral. ORNL is engaged in generating high level nuclear data for reactor, shielding, and safety applications. Nuclear data remains a major source of data uncertainties. Uncertainties on nuclear data rely upon measurements and evaluations. Tight connections with experimental facilities around the world have helped ORNL to address issues on ND and uncertainty. It is extremely important for ORNL to retain expertise on nuclear data in support of the research and expertise activities.

Thermal Neutron Scattering Law for Beryllium Hydride and Critical Mass Calculations [Slides]

TSLs for H(BeH 2 ) and Be(BeH 2 ) were evaluated in the incoherent approximation using FLASSH. Minimum critical mass estimates were performed using MC21 continuous energy Monte Carlo calculations with the BeH 2 TSLs. Researchers confirmed very low estimated critical mass for BeH 2 -moderated and Be- reflected spheres. These were the lowest critical masses NNL has studied to date. Future work includes relaxation of the incoherent approximation for Be(BeH 2 ). A small increase in critical mass is expected due to increased neutron transmission at sub-Bragg cutoff energies.

Synthetic Sling Failure: Evaluations and Recommendations

The information and evaluations provided in this report were compiled to address the recurring problem of synthetic sling failure. As safety is the number one priority in all work aspects, a solution must be devised to prevent accidents from occurring. In revision 0, a total of thirteen cases regarding synthetic sling failure were evaluated in order to determine their causes, effects, and preventative measures. From the collected data, it was found that all cases in which the synthetic sling contacted the edge of its load resulted in sling failure. Revision 1 provides updated synthetic fling failures between the years of 2009 revision 0 and 2021 revision 1.

ENDF/B-VIII.1

The ENDF/B-VIII.1 release is the newest evaluated nuclear data library produced, distributed, and recommended by CSEWG for use in nuclear science and technology applications. Among the many key advances, relative to the previous version ENDF/B-VIII.0, are: re-evaluation of 239Pu file by a joint international effort; updated 16,18O, 19F, 28-30Si, 50-54Cr, 55Mn, 54,56,57Fe, 63,65Cu, 139La, 233,235,238U, and 240,241Pu neutron nuclear data by the IAEA-coordinated INDEN collaboration; significant changes for 3He, 6Li, 9Be, 51V, 88Sr, 103Rh, 140,142Ce, Dy, 181Ta, Pt, 206-208Pb, and 234,236U neutron data; new nuclear data for the photo-nuclear, being 196 adopted from the IAEA2019 Photonuclear Data Library and one new file from JENDL-5; and new evaluations for the charged-particle and atomic sublibraries. Numerous thermal neutron scattering kernels were re-evaluated or provided for the very first time. Additionally, new covariance testing was implemented. ENDF/B-VIII.1 reduced bias in the simulations of many integral experiments with particular progress noted for fluorine, copper and stainless steel containing benchmarks. Data issues which had hindered the deployment of ENDF/B-VIII.0 for commercial nuclear power applications in high burn-up situations, were addressed. ENDF/B-VIII.1 data are distributed in both ENDF-6 and GNDS formats.
