Notes on Davis EOS: Historical Perspective, Derivations & Physical Considerations

Davis reactant and product semi-empirical EOS have been introduced in a series of publications by W. C. Davis. These EOS are convenient to use in conjunction with reactive burn models to parameterize the thermodynamic response of quiescent high explosives (HE) and the mixture of HE decomposition products. There is a history of development of these EOS with different formulae and functional forms found in different papers. The goal of the present notes is to track that history, clarify the physical motivation behind various modifications to Davis EOS over time, and collect all the relevant formulae in one place.

ORNL’s Continuing Efforts in Evaluating and Validating TSLs [Slides]

This presentation finds that INS measurements are not as variable based on sample composition, because phonon spectra is a properly of the bulk material. Additionally, INS and transmission measurements are and should be the most significant part of TSL validation, as they are the fundamental quantities used by Monte Carlo neutronics codes. This presentation reasons that relaying solely on theoretical atomistic calculations for TSL evaluation is not enough, they are highly dependent on inter-atomic potentials (which are not the most accurate depending on the quantity trying to be reproduced) and evaluators knowledge and understanding of the material being studied. Finally on Critical benchmarks, while extremely useful for validation of nuclear data at all energies, critical benchmarks are not the best tool to provide a definitive answer on conflicting TSLs. The presentation concludes that INS and transmission measurements need to be the basis of validation of TSLs.

High-Performance Electron Sources: Numerical Methods and Beam Dynamics at the Precision Frontier

Electron sources have a wide range of applications and there are many stakeholders that express continuing need for improvements and performance enhancements. Whether we consider ultra-cold, high-brightness, high-charge or high-average current source needs, there are some common themes from the point of view of the beam dynamics involved. These are the following ones: ability to model accurately the emission processes, including the presence of often complicated cathode and other boundary surfaces with a wide range of spatial scales; ability to deal accurately and efficiently with a large number of particles interacting pair-wise, including the stochastic part of these interactions with a wide range of spatial scales; and ability to propagate the particle distributions in time, including collisions with a wide range of temporal scales. These tasks require high precision and accuracy since the goal is usually generation, transport and preservation of very high-quality beams. This grant addressed one of the rem

Project DarkStar: Vision for LLNL in 2030

DarkStar was a Strategic Initiative (FY2021-FY2024) to investigate applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to scientific problems of complex hydrodynamics, shockwave physics and energetic materials. The research focused on physics and engineering design as a process that can be tremendously accelerated through merging AI with advanced physics simulation on exascale-class platforms, and to experimentally validate this revolutionary new approach through dynamic materials campaigns. A central thread of scientific inquiry was in the application of AI to enable human understanding of how to control hydrodynamic instability (which has impacts to areas such as inertial confinement fusion) via engineering features and time-dependent sources. Motivated by an unfinished line of research started by Dr. Johnny von Neumann, AI-enabled simulation approaches were developed that allowed DarkStar researchers to uncover several ground-breaking discoveries regarding hydrodynamic instability, including how to completely suppress Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI). These S&T discoveries, along with other advances, have shown the way for an entirely new approach to time-dependent problems known as inverse design – the idea that complex systems can be developed directly from a final state that is to be achieved and resolve the initial design via satisfying several constraints simultaneously via AI/ML. Through experimental campaigns conducted across a wide range of facilities in the NNSA complex (the High Explosive Application Facility at LLNL, the Dynamic Compression Sector/Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Lab, and Special Technologies Laboratory at MSTS) the radical new AI/ML approach to engineering complex material dynamics was verified, establishing a new field of study within the realm of shock physics. As advanced manufacturing capabilities continue to develop, the great importance of inverse design as a means to apply that technology effectively for NNSA missions will feature prominently over this decade. DarkStar has positioned NNSA as a world-leader in this newly emerging cross-disciplinary area of AI methods for advanced physics simulation and pioneered multiple novel approaches that have enabled the broader scientific community. By allowing us to see past the horizon, to 2030 and beyond, DarkStar has illuminated the vast potential of AI/ML to impact a wide range of new national security missions and, consequently, multiple areas of further research have already emerged across the NNSA and DOD complex.

Machine Learning Enabled Atomistic Study of the Micro-Cold Spray Process [Poster]

Micro-cold spray is typically conducted by impacting 200-2000 nm particles at velocities of ~500 m/s. Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to study micro cold spray, but the particles that can be simulated using conventional potentials are much smaller than those used experimentally. The viewgraphs taken from molecular dynamics simulations and shown below are cross-sections of a 50 nm Ta particle with a 3 nm oxide layer impacting at 500 m/s using a machine learning enabled DeePMD potential. Using more expensive reactive interatomic potentials, the previous largest particle size for a metal/oxide impact simulation was 12 nm.

Out-of-distribution generalization for learning quantum dynamics

Generalization bounds are a critical tool to assess the training data requirements of Quantum Machine Learning (QML). Recent work has established guarantees for in-distribution generalization of quantum neural networks (QNNs), where training and testing data are drawn from the same data distribution. However, there are currently no results on out-of-distribution generalization in QML, where we require a trained model to perform well even on data drawn from a different distribution to the training distribution. Here, we prove out-of-distribution generalization for the task of learning an unknown unitary. In particular, we show that one can learn the action of a unitary on entangled states having trained only product states. Since product states can be prepared using only single-qubit gates, this advances the prospects of learning quantum dynamics on near term quantum hardware, and further opens up new methods for both the classical and quantum compilation of quantum circuits.

Implementation of High Temperature and Pressure fluid property interpolation tables

This document describes the use of module property_interpolate by John Doherty (Doherty,2006). The document “Fast Lookup of CO 2 Properties” describes the numerical details associated with lookup table. Rajeh Pawar modified property_interpolate for easier implementation in the FEHM code. George Zyvoloski modified the package to produce tables for water and air at very high temperatures and pressures. He also modified the auxiliary codes(drivers) to use newer datasets from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. We note here that within the files associated with FEHM there three property_interpolate modules. They are interpolate_2a.f90 (water), interpolate_2b.f90 (air) , and interpolate_2c.f90(CO 2 ). The interpolate_2c module is different than the earlier module produced by Rajeh Pawar in that it includes high temperature and pressure data. While FEHM has a number of fluid physics modules, this document will describe only the software and algorithms associated with water, water vapor, and heat (WH).

Surface Pressure Fluctuations Induced by a Hypersonic Turbulent Boundary Layer on a Sharp Cone at Angle of Attack

High-fidelity simulations are performed to characterize the turbulence-induced wall pressure fluctuations on a sharp cone at a 5.5° angle-of-attack in a Mach 8 flow. Wall-resolved large-eddy simulation (LES) and wall-modeled large-eddy simulation (WMLES) results are compared to measurements at several locations on the cone body, where comparisons with high-frequency PCB sensors are good, while comparison with low-frequency kulite sensors varies depending on the location. For a given streamwise location, simulation results show significant azimuthal variation in the wall pressure fluctuation statistics. Comparisons between LES and WMLES results indicate that WMLES can accurately reproduce the low-frequency component of the autospectra quite well, while slight sensitivity is apparent in the coherence. A grid sensitivity study for WMLES further demonstrated sensitivity in the wall pressure fluctuation coherence, but not in the autospectra.

Black Box Equations of State: Creating Semi-analytic Solutions to the Noh Problem and Verifying Equation of State Interfaces

The objective of this report is threefold. First, it details a method for deriving a semi-analytic solution to the Noh Problem when using a “black-box” equation of state. Such capability allows us to perform verification on complicated, more realistic equations of state. Examples include Steinberg equations of state for materials and tabulated equations of state. The second objective is to apply the methodology to verify the singularity-eos equation of state library. We do so by solving the Rankine-Hugoinot jump conditions for the Noh Problem, ensuring singularity derives the correct solution and comparing the error to an exact implementation of the equation of state. The third objective is to perform verification of the xRAGE Eulerian hydrodynamics code when interfaced with singularity. We provide the theory, analysis, documentation for a python implementation of the proposed solver, and verification results.

Entanglement Traffic Engineering in Quantum Optical Fiber Networks based on High-Dimensional Kerr Optical Frequency Combs

The purpose of the project was to explore the performance of entanglement protocols based on microresonator Kerr optical frequency combs. We have addressed these challenges by developing a rigorous frequency-bin approach that allowed us to determine an explicit steady-state density operator for quantum microcombs below threshold. Our novel approach has allowed us to derived an explicit formula for the density operator on the frequency-bin basis, and to propose a complete description of quantum Kerr combs regardless of the number of sidemodes or loss-induced coupling to the environment. This formalism also allows for the explicit determination of their fidelity, purity, and entropy. These results are expected to permit the exploitation of the full potential of entangled microcombs for quantum technology.

Dense granular flows with MFIX-Exa

This report extends the linear spring dashpot collision model the discrete element method available in MFIX-Exa to include static a static tangential friction force. Additionally, two rolling friction models frequently used in the literature are also implemented. The governing equations are provided with an emphasis on the new terms. The new model is validated by comparison to existing experimental data of single particle oblique collisions. The model is then tested on three dense granular flow problems: the formation of static piles, the discharge from a flat-bottom hopper and the self-induced granular Rayleigh-Taylor instability.
