High speed optical object recognition processor with massive holographic memory

Real-time object recognition using a compact grayscale optical correlator will be introduced. A holographic memory module for storing a large bank of optimum correlation filters, to accommodate the large data throughput rate needed for many real-world applications, has also been developed. System architecture of the optical processor and the holographic memory will be presented. Application examples of this object recognition technology will also be demonstrated.

NASA's Near-Earth Object Office

Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) are scientifically interesting remnants of the early solar system formation process, accessible resources for the raw materials necessary for colonizing the inner solar system in the next century, and objects that can threaten life on Earth.

(abstract) The Absorption Line Spectra of Herbig-Hiro Object Exciting Stars at 1.6 and 2 Microns

We observed six Herbig-Hiro object exciting stars with the IRTF CSHELL cryogenic echelle spectrometer at 1.6 and 2 microns with the intent of determining effective temperatures and vsini's from the absorption lines in these spectral regions. In all of these objects, the photospheric absorption lines were either very weak or undetectable with our modest S/N high spectral resolution data. Using this information, constraints can be placed on the veiling continuum present at these wavelengths for embedded low-mass YSOs.

Accessible Near-Earth Objects (NEOs)

Near Earth Objects (NEOs) are asteroids and comets whose orbits are in close proximity to Earth's orbit; specifically, they have perihelia less than 1.3 astronomical units. NEOs particularly near Earth asteroids (NEAs) are identified as potential destinations for future human exploration missions. In this presentation I provide an overview of the current state of knowledge regarding the astrodynamical accessibility of NEAs according to NASA's Near Earth Object Human Space Flight Accessible Targets Study (NHATS). I also investigate the extremes of NEA accessibility using case studies and illuminate the fact that a space-based survey for NEOs is essential to expanding the set of known accessible NEAs for future human exploration missions.

Adaptive Multi-Sensor Fusion Based Object Tracking for Autonomous Urban Air Mobility Operations

Autonomous operations are a crucial aspect in the context of Urban Air Mobility and other emerging aviation markets. In order to enable this autonomy, systems must be able to build independently an accurate and detailed understanding of the own vehicle state as well as the surrounding environment, this includes detecting and avoiding moving objects in the sky, which can be cooperative (aircraft, UAM vehicles, etc.) as well as noncooperative (smaller drones, birds, ...). This paper focuses on the object tracking part that relies on adaptive multi-sensor fusion, taking into account specific properties and limitations of different sensor types. Results show the impact of dropouts of individual sensors on the accuracy of the tracking results for this adaptive sensor fusion approach.

Distant objects detected visually with optical filters

Fluorescent coating aids visual daylight detection and identification of distant objects. An object appears as a blinking light when the area is alternately scanned with transmitting and obscuring filters. This method can be effective in search and rescue operations.

Hydrostatic force used to handle outsized, heavy objects

Specially fitted barge is used to load and transport large, heavy objects to a dock side site. There the barge itself can lift, rotate, and position the objects. Typical functions are economically accomplished by water buoyancy.

Measuring internal dimensions of small transparent objects

Technique individually photographs first the orifice in the transparent object and then a microscopic scale immersed in a liquid having the same index of refraction as the transparent object. Using a scale photograph, the orifice photograph is measured.

A list of some bright objects which S-052 can observe

In order to find out the precise orientation of the photographs obtained by the High Altitude Observatory's ATM white light coronagraph, celestial objects must appear on each roll of film. A list of such bright objects and the times during which they can be observed is presented.

Estimating the proportions of objects within a single resolution element of a multispectral scanner.

Description of a procedu*e designed to estimate the proportions of objects and materials contained in the instantaneous field of view (IFOV) of an airborne multispectral device. A mathematical model is derived to relate the signature of a combination of materials in a resolution cell to the signatures of the individual materials considered. Estimation algorithms are generated and digital computer programs are prepared to apply the algorithms in the description of the effects which are observed when several objects are viewed simultaneously. The maximum likelihood estimate of the proportions of various individual materials in an IFOV is discussed. A simulation program is proposed for such estimates. A procedure for analyzing the geometric relations of signatures which affect the accuracy of estimates is set forth.

Linear restoration of incoherently radiating objects.

Light from an incoherently radiating object and background light are focused onto a photosensitive mosaic, the currents from whose elements constitute the data on which is based a least-squares linear estimate of the radiance at points in the object. By comparison of the mean-square error with that given by Wiener filtering theory, the equivalent noise spectral density for use in the latter is shown to consist of a shot-noise term and a term due to the random fluctuations of the incoherent light; the former predominates under most circumstances. Turbulent distortion of the image after passage of the rays through a random-phase screen is also treated from this standpoint.

In-situ measurement of objective lens data of a high-resolution electron microscope.

Bragg-reflex images of small individual crystallites in the size range of 20-100 A diameter with known crystallographic orientation were used in a transmission electron microscope to determine in-situ: (a) the relationship between objective lens current (or accelerating voltage) changes in discrete steps and corresponding defocus, (b) the spherical aberration coefficient, and (c) the axial chromatic aberration coefficient of the objective lens. The accuracy of the described method is better than 5%. The same specimen can advantageously be used to properly aline the illuminating beam with respect to the optical axis.

Physical associations between quasi-stellar objects and galaxies.

Evaluation of evidence pertaining to apparent associations between galaxies and quasi-stellar objects. It is shown that for the five 3C QSOs which lie very close to bright galaxies the QSO-galaxy angular separations are inversely proportional to the redshifts of the galaxies. This lends additional support to the association hypothesis. However, an analysis of an essentially disjoint sample of QSOs identified from the Parkes radio catalog, and fainter galaxies in the catalog of Zwicky and his associates, reveals no statistically significant tendency toward pairing of QSOs and galaxies. The results can be explained in one of two ways. One is that, despite the evidence to the contrary, the 3C results are due to chance. The other is that real associations in the second sample are masked by selection effects. It is shown that several selectional biases do indeed discriminate against the detection of QSO-galaxy pairs, especially for fainter objects. Finally, on the assumption that the 3C QSO-galaxy associations are real, the relationship of QSOs to galaxies is discussed.
