The onset of Alfvenic turbulence

An investigation is conducted on how low-frequency MHD oscillations in a warm plasma may undergo a transition from a coherent state to one of turbulence. A driven/dissipative derivative nonlinear Schroedinger equation is derived from the fluid equations. The time evolution of an arbitrary spectrum of waves is analyzed in the case where one k-mode is unstable, with the rest damped. It is found that the transition from order to chaos in the driven/dissipative system is correlated with the existence or absence of 'breathing' solitons in the associated conservative system.

Instability Issue of Paralleled Dies in an SiC Power Module in Solid-State Circuit Breaker Applications

Paralleled dies in a power module could have instability issues during high current switching transients. Here, the instability is caused by the differential-mode oscillation among paralleled MOSFETs. Conventional analyses of paralleled MOSFETs’ stability are normally limited to a single operating point, which ignores the influences of the switching trajectory and nonlinear device parameters on stability. This article reveals that the switching trajectory can significantly influence parallel stability. The analysis is improved by solving eigenvalues of state-space modeling system matrices of all operating points that the switching trajectory goes through considering nonlinear device parameters. Higher voltage and current stresses result in greater real parts of complex eigenvalues, which explains why the paralleled MOSFETs are more unstable with higher voltage and current stresses. To improve stability in solid-state circuit breaker applications, we propose a method to manipulate the switching trajectory to avoid the unstable region where the conventional hard switching trajectory normally goes through. Experimental results show that the turn- off current capability can be increased from ~five times of rated current with the gate oscillation using the conventional turn- off trajectory to ~ten times of rated current without the gate oscillation using the optimal turn- off trajectory.

Effects of low frequency vibration of a limb

Low frequency oscillations were applied on the ankle joint in plantarflexion/dorsiflexion rotation using a torque motor. The torque, the angular rotation and the evoked electromyogram from the gastronemius soleus and the anterior tibial muscles were recorded. Significant nonlinearities were observed in the angular rotation from 8 to 12 Hz. The following methods are used for data analysis: (1) Two cycle averaged response; (2) Fourier transform; and (3) Fourier analysis at the driving frequency. Important observations are: (1) resonance near 6 to 8 Hz; (2) slowly increasing amplitudes of oscillation near resonance; (3) self sustaining oscillations after the motor is turned off, particularly in the fatigued limb; and (4) distortion of angular rotation during which there are spontaneous recurrences of oscillation at the driving frequency.

Validation of a Tapered Impact Damper for Traffic Signal Structure Vibrations Using the Method of Harmonic Balance

Significant vibration amplitudes and cycles can be produced when traffic signal structures with low inherent damping are excited near one of their natural frequencies. For the mitigation of wind-induced vibrations, dynamic vibration absorbers coupled to the structure are often used. Here, this research investigates the performance of a tapered impact damper, consisting of a hanging spring-mass oscillator inside a housing capable of reducing vibration amplitude over a broader frequency range than the conventional tuned mass damper. A nonlinear, two degree-of-freedom model is developed with coordinates representing the traffic structure and the tapered impact damper. This research focuses on the application of the harmonic balance method to approximate the periodic solutions of the nonlinear equations to compute the nonlinear dynamics of the damped traffic signal structure. After designing and manufacturing a tapered impact damper, the traffic signal structure is tested with and without the damper using free vibration snapback tests. The experimental frequency and damping backbone curves are used to validate the analytical model, and the effectiveness of the damper is discussed.

Bandwidth and threshold calculations for angle-tuned parametric oscillators.

The bandwidth of angle-tuned optical parametric oscillators, in some cases, is limited by the noncolinear interaction of the pump, signal, and idler beams, which results when the nonlinear material is rotated relative to the pump beam. To determine this bandwidth, a theoretical expression for the pump power threshold is derived in the near field limit taking into account double refraction for a noncolinear interaction. Angle tuning can be done by (1) rotating the crystal and mirrors as a unit, or by (2) rotating the crystal only. Expressions for determining the tuning rate and threshold increase for both tuning methods are derived.

Development of a nonlinear unsteady transonic flow theory

A nonlinear, unsteady, small-disturbance theory capable of predicting inviscid transonic flows about aerodynamic configurations undergoing both rigid body and elastic oscillations was developed. The theory is based on the concept of dividing the flow into steady and unsteady components and then solving, by method of local linearization, the coupled differential equation for unsteady surface pressure distribution. The equations, valid at all frequencies, were derived for two-dimensional flows, numerical results, were obtained for two classses of airfoils and two types of oscillatory motions.

Implicit unsteady transonic airfoil calculations at supersonic freestreams

The computer code LTRAN2 has been extended to compute unsteady transonic flows about oscillating airfoils with supersonic freestreams. The LTRAN2 code uses an alternating direction implicit (ADI) algorithm to solve the two-dimensional, nonlinear, low-frequency, transonic small-disturbance (LF-TSD) equation. The modified code, LTRAN2-SS, includes a 'high-frequency' option. Steady solutions are checked against those computed by the steady TSD code, TSFOIL; unsteady computations of the linear LF-TSD equation are compared with known linear theory solutions; and new unsteady nonlinear solutions are presented. These cases include standard AGARD test cases for the NLR 7301, MBB-A3, and DO Al supercritical airfoils, as well as several NACA airfoils. The modified code enables aerodynamicists to quickly and efficiently compute transonic flows for both subsonic and supersonic freestreams, and thus resolve flutter boundaries through the full extent of the transonic dip phenomenon.

Pressure-coupled combustion response model for solid propellants based on Zeldovich-Novozhilov approach

An exact analytical solution is given to the problem of long-time propellant thermal response to a specified pressure oscillation. Coupling to the gas phase is made using the quasisteady Zeldovich-Novozhilov approximation. Explicit linear and lowest order (quadratic) nonlinear expressions for propellant response are obtained from the implicit nonlinear solutions. Using these expressions, response curves are presented for an ammonium perchlorate composite propellant and HMX monopropellant.

Explosive coalescence of magnetic islands

Simulation results from both the EM collisionless particle code and the MHD particle code reveal an explosive reconnection process associated with nonlinear evolution of the coalescence instability. The explosive coalescence is a self-similar process of magnetic collapse, and ensuing amplitude oscillations in the magnetic and electrostatic energies and temperatures are modeled by an equation of motion for the scale factor in the Sagdeev potential. This phenomenon may explain the rapid energy release of a certain class of solar flares during their impulsive phase.

Fiber-Based Laser Transmitter for Oxygen A-Band Spectroscopy and Remote Sensing

A fiber-based laser transmitter has been designed for active remote-sensing spectroscopy. The transmitter uses a master-oscillator-power-amplifier (MOPA) configuration with a distributed feedback diode-laser master oscillator and an erbium-doped fiber amplifier. The output from the MOPA is frequency-doubled with a periodically poled nonlinear crystal. The utility of this single-frequency, wavelength-tunable, power-scalable laser has been demonstrated in a spectroscopic measurement of the diatomic oxygen A-band.

Transonic Correction to Theodorsen's Theory for Oscillating Airfoil in Pitch and Plunge Toward Flutter

This paper presents a transonic correction method for an oscillating airfoil in pitch and plunge. The proposed method applies correction functions to the Theodorsen’s theory to capture the transonic nonlinear aero- dynamics. These correction functions apply necessary corrections to the amplitudes and the phase angles of the unsteady lift and pitching moment coefficients to account for transonic aerodynamics. The proposed method also postulates a correction for the motion of the aerodynamic center which could be induced by moving shocks. A series of unsteady RANS CFD simulations of the airfoil at the mean aerodynamic chord of the Transonic Truss-Braced Wing aircraft are conducted using FUN3D to provide data to construct these transonic correction functions. The computed responses of the unsteady lift and pitching moment coefficients using these transonic correction functions match the CFD simulation results very well even when the pitching moment coefficient is highly nonlinear. A flutter analysis of an airfoil in pitch and plunge illustrates the potential use of the proposed transonic correction method.

Static and Forced Oscillation Wind Tunnel Tests of A Tandem Propeller Configuration

A series of static and forced oscillation tests were conducted using a tandem propeller configuration in the NASA Langley 12-Foot Low-Speed Tunnel. The primary objectives were to quantify the effect of aerodynamic interactions on propeller thrust and identify conditions where the effect is most significant. A secondary objective was to obtain a preliminary data set from dynamic testing to assess the impact of angular rate on thrust performance. This paper presents analysis of the experimental data, which includes propeller performance measurements and qualitative flow visualization. The static results show that the rear propeller in the tandem configuration can experience thrust degradations greater than 30%. The extent of the wake interaction is a function of the hub separation distance and the advance ratio of the front propeller. Forced oscillation results showed that the front propeller exhibited primarily linear behavior across the conditions tested, whereas the rear propeller exhibited dynamic nonlinearity in the region of significant thrust degradation. These results are intended to support high-fidelity modeling research, particularly for flight dynamics simulation development to aid trajectory prediction, control design, and identification of hazardous conditions for multirotor vehicles.

Analytical and EZmock covariance validation for the DESI 2024 results

The estimation of uncertainties in cosmological parameters is an important challenge in Large-Scale-Structure (LSS) analyses. For standard analyses such as Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Full-Shape two approaches are usually considered. First: analytical estimates of the covariance matrix use Gaussian approximations and (nonlinear) clustering measurements to estimate the matrix, which allows a relatively fast and computationally cheap way to generate matrices that adapt to an arbitrary clustering measurement. On the other hand, sample covariances are an empirical estimate of the matrix based on an ensemble of clustering measurements from fast and approximate simulations. While more computationally expensive due to the large amount of simulations and volume required, these allow us to take into account systematics that are impossible to model analytically. In this work we compare these two approaches in order to enable DESI's key analyses. We find that the configuration space analytical estimate performs satisfactorily in BAO analyses and its flexibility in terms of input clustering makes it the fiducial choice for DESI's 2024 BAO analysis. On the contrary, the analytical computation of the covariance matrix in Fourier space does not reproduce the expected measurements in terms of Full-Shape analyses, which motivates the use of a corrected mock covariance for DESI's 2024 Full Shape analysis.
