Suzaku Observation of the Classical Nova V2491 Cyg in Quiescence

We present Suzaku XIS observation of V2491 Cyg (Nova Cyg 2008 No. 2) obtained in quiescence, more than two years after the outburst. The nova was detected as a very luminous source in a wide spectral range from soft to hard X-rays. A very soft blackbody-like component peaking at 0.5 keV indicates that either we observe remaining, localized hydrogen burning on the surface of the white dwarf, or accretion onto a magnetized polar cap. In the second case, V2491 Cyg is a candidate "soft intermediate polar". We obtained the best fit for the X-ray spectra with several components: two of thermal plasma, a blackbody and a complex absorber. The later is typical of intermediate polars. The X-ray light-curve shows a modulation with an approximately 38 min period. The amplitude of this modulation is strongly energy dependent and reaches maximum in the 0.8-2.0 keV range. We discuss the origin of the X-ray emission and pulsations, and the likelihood of the intermediate polar scenario.

A superconducting time-variant filtering system.

Description of a laboratory test facility for studying the tracking capabilities of a superconducting time-varying filter system. An RF signal from an antenna is amplified and fed to a mixer; the IF signal modulates an optical diode, and the emitted light is directed through an optical system onto a high-purity high-resistance semiconductor terminating a quarter-wavelength stub in a lead-plated superconducting cavity. The resulting perturbation in the cavity resonant frequency is proportional to the signal modulation present in the light beam. The narrow-band superconducting cavity is thereby acting as a time-variant filter that tracks the instantaneous signal modulation. SNR improvement on the order of 25 dB can be obtained due to the noise rejection characteristics of such a modulation tracking filter.

Investigation of direct integrated optics modulators

Direct optical modulation techniques applicable to integrated optical data preprocessors were studied. Emphasis was placed on the analysis and fabrication of a field effect type modulator. A series of computer modeling studies were performed to determine the effects of semiconductor cladding on the fields of propagating waves in planar dielectric waveguides. These studies predicted that changes in the propagation characteristics of waveguides clad with silicon and gallium arsenide could be made large enough to be useful in modulators. These effects are dependent on the complex permittivity and thickness of the cladding. Since the conductivity of the cladding can be changed by the photon generation of hole-electron pairs, incoherent light may be used as the input to modulate a coherent light beam. Waveguides were fabricated and silicon claddings were applied to verify the theoretical predictions.

Structural Mechanism of an Efficacy Photoswitch Targeting the β 2 ‐adrenergic Receptor

The field of photopharmacology develops light-responsive drugs that can modulate protein activity, enabling precise and dynamic investigations of their roles in health and disease. Adrenergic receptors are prominent targets for this approach because they are prototypical G protein-coupled receptors with high clinical relevance in bronchial and cardiovascular diseases. Here, we employed the azobenzene-based compound photoazolol-1 in combination with time-resolved serial crystallography at X-ray free-electron lasers to resolve the molecular mechanisms by which photoswitchable β-blockers modulate activity of the β 2 -adrenoceptor (β 2 AR). Time-resolved structures of the receptor bound to trans-photoazolol-1 (pre-photoconversion), a strained intermediate in the nanosecond range, and the fully photoisomerized cis-photoazolol-1 reveal how isomerization of the azobenzene moiety induces distinct conformational changes within the orthosteric ligand binding pocket. Within seconds, light-excited photoazolol-1 adopts a new binding pose, altering interactions with extracellular loop 2 and shifting the positions of transmembrane helices 5, 6, and 7. Functional assays of β 2 AR in cellular membranes show that photoazolol-1 acts as an efficacy photoswitch, changing from an inverse agonist to a neutral antagonist upon isomerization without leaving the binding pocket. In combination, these findings suggest a molecular mechanism for activity modulation via efficacy photoswitches and provide a framework for designing ligands that exploit light-driven transitions within the binding pocket to achieve spatiotemporal control of receptor function.

Low-Light-Shift Cesium Fountain without Mechanical Shutters

A new technique for reducing errors in a laser-cooled cesium fountain frequency standard provides for strong suppression of the light shift without need for mechanical shutters. Because mechanical shutters are typically susceptible to failure after operating times of the order of months, the elimination of mechanical shutters could contribute significantly to the reliability of frequency standards that are required to function continuously for longer time intervals. With respect to the operation of an atomic-fountain frequency standard, the term "light shift" denotes an undesired relative shift in the two energy levels of the atoms (in this case, cesium atoms) in the atomic fountain during interrogation by microwaves. The shift in energy levels translates to a frequency shift that reduces the precision and possibly accuracy of the frequency standard. For reasons too complex to describe within the space available for this article, the light shift is caused by any laser light that reaches the atoms during the microwave- interrogation period, but is strongest for near-resonance light. In the absence of any mitigating design feature, the light shift, expressed as a fraction of the standard fs frequency, could be as large as approx. 2 x 10(exp -11), the largest error in the standard. In a typical prior design, to suppress light shift, the intensity of laser light is reduced during the interrogation period by using a single-pass acoustooptic modulator to deflect the majority of light away from the main optical path. Mechanical shutters are used to block the remaining undeflected light to ensure complete attenuation. Without shutters, this remaining undeflected light could cause a light shift of as much as .10.15, which is unacceptably large in some applications. The new technique implemented here involves additionally shifting the laser wavelength off resonance by a relatively large amount (typically of the order of nanometers) during microwave interrogation. In this design, when microwave interrogation is not underway, the atoms are illuminated by a slave laser locked to the lasing frequency of a lower power master laser.

Visible Light Communications: A Survey on Recent High-Capacity Demonstrations and Digital Modulation Techniques

In order to deal with the increasing number of mobile devices and with their demand for Internet services, particularly social media platforms, streaming video, and online gaming, Radio-Frequency (RF) wireless networks have been pushed to their capacity limits. In addition to this, 80% of the total data traffic is carried out by users inside buildings. Therefore, new technologies have started to be considered for indoor wireless communications. Visible Light Communications (VLC) can provide both illumination and communications, appearing as an alternative or complement to RF wireless networks. VLC offers high bandwidth and immunity to interference from electromagnetic sources. This manuscript reviews recent high-capacity VLC demonstrations. The main focus of this work is to present digital-signal-processing techniques used in VLC systems. Different modulation formats are analyzed, which can be divided into two large groups, namely single-carrier and multi-carrier modulation schemes. Finally, some recently proposed capacity-achieving strategies are presented. We discuss how to implement these techniques and how they will be useful for the continued development of VLC systems.

Collaborative Research Towards a tonne-scale bolometer-based neutrinoless double beta decay experiment (Final Report)

Cryogenic bolometers are an excellent technology for neutrinoless double beta decay searches owing to their very high energy resolution and potential for high radiopurity. The current most advanced large-scale experiment using these detectors is the Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE). The largest source of background in CUORE is degraded alpha particles, emitted from shallow depths of the detector holders, which can deposit a thermal energy signature similar to neutrinoless double beta decay. To mitigate this background, the CUPID concept (CUORE Upgrade with Particle IDentification) proposes to use scintillating cryogenic detectors. Detecting both the scintillation light and the thermal signal allows discrimination between alpha particle events and beta/gamma events. We report on the design and execution of R&D tests to optimize the design of the single detector module, in particular the scintillation light collection efficiency at cryogenic temperatures.

Apparatus and Methods for Photoacoustic Measurement of Light Absorption of Particulate and Gaseous Species

In one embodiment, a photoacoustic effect measurement instrument for measuring a species (e.g., a species of PM) in a gas employs a pair of differential acoustic cells including a sample cell that receives sample gas including the species, and a reference cell that receives a filtered version of the sample gas from which the species has been substantially removed. An excitation light source provides an amplitude modulated beam to each of the acoustic cells. An array of multiple microphones is mounted to each of the differential acoustic cells, and measures an acoustic wave generated in the respective acoustic cell by absorption of light by sample gas therein to produce a respective signal. The microphones are isolated from sample gas internal to the acoustic cell by a film. A preamplifier determines a differential signal and a controller calculates concentration of the species based on the differential signal.

REDC Process Instrumentation Modernization Project

Critical electronics used for isotopes production have become outdated and difficult to manufacture. In particular the alpha-particle and neutron detection electronics (commonly referred to as Q2809A-9 and -11) which are used to monitor effluent activity in ORNL Building 7920 were designed and deployed in 1966-67. These electronics are still used but some parts are no longer available for purchase. In addition, the printed circuit boards used in the Count Rate Monitor (CRM) module have no fabrication files or quality assurance documentation. In light of this, a project to modernize the modules for ability to manufacture with modern parts was undertaken. Both the preamplifier and CRM were modernized with new printed circuit boards and parts which are current catalog parts. In addition, QA documentation was generated which allows the manufacturer to assure proper operation prior to delivery.

Advances in Polymerizations Modulated by External Stimuli

Synthetic polymer chemistry endeavors to imitate the spatial and temporal control exhibited within biological systems to obtain well-defined polymeric materials with unique structures, properties, and applications. This is often approached through the development of dynamic catalyst (or initiator) systems that use external stimuli to elicit discrete, site specific transformations that impact the polymerization. In this work, we highlight developments in polymerizations that are modulated by external stimuli, with particular focus on those systems that enable notable changes in kinetics, monomer selectivity, polymer architecture, or tacticity. Examples of external stimuli include chemical oxidants or reductants, light, applied voltage, and mechanical force.
