Implementation of Genetic Algorithms to Optimize Metal–Organic Frameworks for CO 2 Capture

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for CO 2 capture with the potential to use less energy than current industrial CO 2 capture methods. MOFs are highly versatile sorbents, and there is an almost unlimited number of MOFs that could be synthesized. In this work, we used a genetic algorithm (GA) and grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations to efficiently search for high-performing MOFs for CO 2 capture. We analyzed the effects of important GA parameters, including the mutation probability, the number of MOFs per generation and the number of GA generations, on the GA performance. Here, we performed GCMC simulations on-the-fly during the GA procedure to determine the performance of proposed MOFs and optimized their structures using multiple objective functions across different topologies. The GA was able to determine top-performing MOFs balancing CO 2 selectivity versus working capacity and reduced the cost of molecular simulations by a factor of 25 versus brute-force screening of an entire database of structures.

Synthesis of Synergistic Nitrogen-Doped NiMoO 4 /Ni 3 N Heterostructure for Implementation of an Efficient Alkaline Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Electrochemical water splitting is considered as an effective and promising method to produce the ideal hydrogen energy to solve the energy crisis and environmental pollution problems. In this paper, we successfully synthesized the N-doped NiMoO 4 /Ni 3 N heterostructure, which exhibited an efficient HER performance with a lower overpotential of 51 mV at 10 mA cm -2 and a lower Tafel slope value of 45.47 mV dec -1 compared with those of NiMoO 4 , N-doped NiMoO 4 , or Ni 3 N owing to the synergistic effect of N doping and construction of the superior heterostructure. When the N-doped NiMoO 4 /Ni 3 N heterostructure is used as a cathode and the well-recognized excellent OER material (NiFe-LDH) is used as an anode to construct the two-electrode electrolyzer, the system requires only 1.506 and 1.559 V to achieve the current densities of 10 and 20 mA cm -2 , respectively, which are lower than those of the commercial Pt/C//RuO 2 system (1.573 and 1.634 V, respectively) or many other reported systems. At the same time, this two-electrode system demonstrates excellent durability in electrocatalytic water splitting. This design method paved the way for the development of another electrocatalytic system.

Standalone Block Copolymer Nanoballoons: Decoupling Self-Assembly from Implementation in Nanomanufacturing

Here we report a facile method to produce isolatable hollow-core elastomeric vesicles, “nanoballoons”, prepared via block copolymer self-assembly in a polymer blend. Poly(isoprene-block-dimethylsiloxane) (PI-PDMS) diblock copolymers are blended with PDMS homopolymers (h-PDMS) as a “solvent” phase to template the self-assembly of PDMS-tethered vesicles with PI walls. The walls are subsequently crosslinked to yield mechanically stabilized elastomeric vesicles. The h-PDMS inner-core and matrix are separated from the vesicles by dialysis to yield the matrix-free nanoballoons. These objects, 0.3 – 1 μm in diameter, can be further reincorporated into a crosslinkable PDMS. Throughout the self-assembly, recovery, and reincorporation processes we apply several techniques including solvent dispersion/dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements, transmission electron microscopy (TEM)/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to provide a consilient body of evidence that the nanoballoon morphology is retained. Furthermore, this work presents advanced nanomanufacturing schema that illustrate the decoupling of the thermodynamic and dynamic factors that govern macromolecular self-assembly from the environment in which the self-assembled objects are deployed.

Surface Brightening in Eastern and Central China Since the Implementation of the Clean Air Action in 2013: Causes and Implications

Surface brightening has been observed in China since 2005. However, it remains unclear whether the brightening has accelerated recently in response to the strictest ever air pollution control policies since 2013. By combining intensive surface and satellite observations, we find an unprecedented rapid increasing trend in surface solar radiation (SSR) of 0.70–1.16 W m-2 yr-1 over the eastern and central China for 2014–2019. Using a novel method to identify the relative contributions of aerosol and cloud radiative effects to the SSR trends, we find that the strongly declining aerosol radiative effect due to the strict air pollution controls is the main cause of the upward SSR trends; cloud variations should not be the main reason. Distinction exists in seasonal trends of SSR, with decreasing trends in winter and increasing trends in other seasons. Air pollution controls play an important role in regulating SSR, which has valuable implications for photovoltaic power generation.

Implementation and Exploration of Parameterizations of Large-Scale Dynamics in NCAR's Single Column Atmosphere Model SCAM6

A single column model with parameterized large-scale (LS) dynamics is used to better understand the response of steady-state tropical precipitation to relative sea surface temperature under various representations of radiation, convection, and circulation. The large-scale dynamics are parametrized via the weak temperature gradient (WTG), damped gravity wave (DGW), and spectral weak temperature gradient (Spectral WTG) method in NCAR's Single Column Atmosphere Model (SCAM6). Radiative cooling is either specified or interactive, and the convective parameterization is run using two different values of a parameter that controls the degree of convective inhibition. Results are interpreted in the context of the Global Atmospheric System Studies -Weak Temperature Gradient (GASS-WTG) Intercomparison project. Using the same parameter settings and simulation configuration as in the GASS-WTG Intercomparison project, SCAM6 under the WTG and DGW methods produces erratic results, suggestive of numerical instability. However, when key parameters are changed to weaken the large-scale circulation's damping of tropospheric temperature variations, SCAM6 performs comparably to single column models in the GASS-WTG Intercomparison project. The Spectral WTG method is less sensitive to changes in convection and radiation than are the other two methods, performing qualitatively similarly across all configurations considered. Under all three methods, circulation strength, represented in 1D by grid-scale vertical velocity, is decreased when barriers to convection are reduced. This effect is most extreme under specified radiative cooling, and is shown to come from increased static stability in the column's reference radiative-convective equilibrium profile. This argument can be extended to interactive radiation cases as well, though perhaps less conclusively.

Representing Anthropogenic Dust From Agricultural Sources in E3SMv1: Implementation, Evaluation, and Assessment of the Radiative Forcing

Dust emissions related to anthropogenic activities (i.e., anthropogenic dust) is not represented in most global climate models and its radiative impact remains unassessed. In this study, we develop a new and physically based method to parameterize anthropogenic dust emission from agricultural sources (i.e., agricultural dust, or AD) based on the DOE's Energy Exascale Earth System Model version 1 (E3SMv1). This method relates AD emission to the crop land use fraction in the E3SMv1 land component. Major AD sources simulated by our parameterization include those over Central America, the Sahel, North India, and North China. The annual averaged AD emission with diameter less than 10 μm is 567 Tg yr −1 in present-day (year 2000), which contributes to 13.3% of total dust emission. Model evaluation against satellite and ground-based observations shows that the new parameterization can represent AD emissions and global dust cycle reasonably well. We find that the total dust emission increases by 13.1% (495 Tg yr −1 ) from 1850 to 2000 due to the cropland land use fraction changes without considering the impact from climate changes. This induces a net dust direct effective radiative forcing of −0.041 W m −2 at top of the atmosphere. This dust-induced cooling exceeds 10% of the total anthropogenic aerosol direct effective radiative forcing from 1750 to 2014 estimated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Sixth Assessment Report. Our findings indicate an important role of anthropogenic dust in global climate change, which should be included in future climate change assessments.

A scalable, open-source implementation of a large-scale mechanistic model for single cell proliferation and death signaling

Mechanistic models of how single cells respond to different perturbations can help integrate disparate big data sets or predict response to varied drug combinations. However, the construction and simulation of such models have proved challenging. Here, we developed a python-based model creation and simulation pipeline that converts a few structured text files into an SBML standard and is high-performance- and cloud-computing ready. We applied this pipeline to our large-scale, mechanistic pan-cancer signaling model (named SPARCED) and demonstrate it by adding an IFNγ pathway submodel. We then investigated whether a putative crosstalk mechanism could be consistent with experimental observations from the LINCS MCF10A Data Cube that IFNγ acts as an anti-proliferative factor. The analyses suggested this observation can be explained by IFNγ-induced SOCS1 sequestering activated EGF receptors. This work forms a foundational recipe for increased mechanistic model-based data integration on a single-cell level, an important building block for clinically-predictive mechanistic models.

Expanding the use of ethanol as a feedstock for cell-free synthetic biochemistry by implementing acetyl-CoA and ATP generating pathways

Abstract Ethanol is a widely available carbon compound that can be increasingly produced with a net negative carbon balance. Carbon-negative ethanol might therefore provide a feedstock for building a wider range of sustainable chemicals. Here we show how ethanol can be converted with a cell free system into acetyl-CoA, a central precursor for myriad biochemicals, and how we can use the energy stored in ethanol to generate ATP, another key molecule important for powering biochemical pathways. The ATP generator produces acetone as a value-added side product. Our ATP generator reached titers of 27 ± 6 mM ATP and 59 ± 15 mM acetone with maximum ATP synthesis rate of 2.8 ± 0.6 mM/h and acetone of 7.8 ± 0.8 mM/h. We illustrated how the ATP generating module can power cell-free biochemical pathways by converting mevalonate into isoprenol at a titer of 12.5 ± 0.8 mM and a maximum productivity of 1.0 ± 0.05 mM/h. These proof-of-principle demonstrations may ultimately find their way to the manufacture of diverse chemicals from ethanol and other simple carbon compounds.

Implementing the donor–acceptor approach in electronically conducting copolymers via electropolymerization

Electropolymerization has become a convenient method for synthesizing and characterizing complex organic copolymers having intrinsic electronic conductivity, including the donor (D)–acceptor (A) class of electronically conducting polymers (ECPs). This review begins with an introduction to the electrosynthesis of common second-generation ECPs. The information obtainable from electroanalytical studies, charge carriers such as polarons (positive and negative) and bipolarons (positive and negative) and doping will be discussed. The evolutionary chain of ECPs is then presented. ECPs comprising electron-rich D and electron-deficient A moieties have been shown to possess intrinsic electronic conductivity and unique optical and electronic properties. They are third generation ECPs and electropolymerization of mixtures of D and A leads to stoichiometrically controlled block copolymers. These D–A type ECPs are discussed on the basis of selected representative materials. Since the discovery of electropolymerization as a powerful tool to synthesize copolymers of conjugated monomers with a pre-determined ratio of D and A repeat units present in the polymer, the field of D–A type ECPs has grown considerably and the literature available since 2004 to 2021 is summarized and tabulated. Electronic and optical properties of the materials determined by computational chemistry are presented. The data obtained from electrochemical and optical methods are compared with those obtained from computational methods and reasons for discrepancies are given. The literature on the concept of electropolymerization extended to synthesizing triblock and many-block copolymers is reviewed. Finally, applications of D–A polymers in optoelectronic devices (organic solar cells and field-effect transistors) and in bio-imaging are explained quoting appropriate examples.
