The use of four band multispectral photography to identify forest cover types

Four-band multispectral aerial photography and a color additive viewer were employed to identify forest cover types in Northern Alabama. The multispectral photography utilized the blue, green, red and near-infrared spectral regions and was made with black and white infrared film. On the basis of color differences alone, a differentiation between conifers and hardwoods was possible; however, supplementary information related to forest ecology proved necessary for the differentiation of various species of pines and hardwoods.

SS Cygni as a hard X-ray source identified with the scanning modulation collimator on HEAO 1

Hard X-ray emission from a 15 min by 1.5 deg area containing SS Cygni had previously been reported and identified with SS Cygni. This paper reports a 0.4 sq arc min measurement of the position of the X-ray source with the HEAO 1 modulation collimator experiment which leads to an unequivocal identification of SS Cygni as an X-ray emitter in the 2-10 keV energy range. The historical light curve in hard X-rays was also investigated by analyzing relevant Uhuru data, and two instances of possible source detection in the 2-6 keV band were noted. From Ariel 5 observations it is calculated that the X-ray luminosity of SS Cygni in the 2-10 keV energy range is of the order of 10 to the 33rd erg/sec in the optical low state and probably at least an order of magnitude less in the high state. By contrast, the soft X-ray luminosity increases by an order of magnitude between the optical low and high states. A coronal model or accretion onto the white dwarf can account for the inverse correlation of the soft and hard X-rays.

Comparison of analytical and flight test identified aerodynamic derivatives for a tandem-rotor transport helicopter

Flight tests for verifying an analytical aerodynamic derivative model of a CH-47 helicopter were conducted for low cruise speeds and transition to hover portions of curved, decelerating landing approach trajectories. All testing was performed on a closed loop basis with the stability augmentation system of the helicopter operating, and response data were obtained using both manual and computer generated input maneuvers. The results indicate some differences between the measured response time histories and those predicted by both analytical and flight test identified derivatives. With some exceptions the discrepancies are not severe, and the overall agreement between the measured and computed time histories is reasonably good. No adverse effects attributable to closed loop testing were noted, and the use of computer generated inputs proved to be superior to manual ones.

Using 70-mm aerial photography to identify rangeland sites

A south Texas rangeland area was used as a study site to test the use of microdensitometry on 70-mm color-infrared and black-and-white photographs (scale 1:19,000) for distinguishing among 11 range sites (two brushland, seven grassland, two barren land) during the winter (February), spring (May), and summer (August) of 1976. Color-infrared photographs were also taken at a scale of 1:42,000 for the summer date. Film optical density readings were made on one color-infrared film with white light only. The best separations among density readings for all range sites were obtained using white light exposed on color-infrared film in the summer when vegetation was at peak foliage development. Results from this study indicate that 70-mm aerial color-infrared photography at a scale of 1:19,000 or 1:42,000 has good potential for identifying range sites in large and inaccessible areas, and could be a useful tool for range management.

An optical burst from the star identified with the X-ray source 2S1254-690

High time-resolution photometry of the proposed optical counterpart (Star 30) of the X-ray source 2S1254-690 is reported here. An event of high statistical significance was observed from the star that has all the temporal characteristics of an X-ray burst (see, for example, ref. 3). 2S1254-690 has not previously been identified as an X-ray burst source, but its optical counterpart shows properties in common with this class of objects. We also derive the X-ray spectrum of 2S1254-690 using data obtained with the HEAO 1 satellite. The spectrum can be fit in the energy range 0.18-30 keV by a power law of photon index -2.5, modified by interstellar absorption.

Identifiability of unknown noise covariance matrices for some special cases of a linear, time-invariant, discrete-time dynamic system

Two off-line schemes are proposed for the identification of unknown noise covariance matrices Q and R of a discrete-time dynamic system. The first scheme is based on a maximum a posteriori cost function utilizing smoothed state estimates, while the second is based on a maximum likelihood cost function utilizing filtered state estimates. Sensitivity of the cost functions to Q and R is analyzed for the following cases: (1) single-input single-output systems; (2) multiinput single-output systems; and (3) single-input multioutput systems with a diagonal R. Identifiability criteria are presented for the cases considered and demonstrated by examples.

Microdensitometry to identify saline rangelands on 70-mm color-infrared aerial film

Many of the world's rangelands are affected by salinity. The detection of these areas is important to range and resource managers who are concerned with productivity, condition, and animal carrying capacity. The reported study was conducted along a north-to-south flight line 24 km long and 1.6 wide in Starr County, TX. Everitt et al. (1977) described seven different native range sites (four nonsaline and three saline) along this flight line. The study showed that photointerpretation by microdensitometry could be used to identify saline range sites quantitatively on CIR (0.50 to 0.90 micrometers) aerial film (scales 1:19,000, 1:42,000, and 1:80,000) exposed in May 1976, June 1976, and June 1979. Microdensitometer readings made on CIR film using white or blue light generally gave the best separation between saline and nonsaline range sites. The differences in microdensitometry readings among saline and nonsaline range sites were caused by less plant cover on the saline sites.

A quasi-Newton procedure for identifying pilot-related parameters of the optimal control model

The development and application of a quasi-Newton gradient search procedure for identifying independent pilot related parameters of the optimal control model for pilot/vehicle systems is reported. A sensitivity analysis procedure which determines whether a given model parameter is required to match a specific experimental result, and which experimentally induced parameter changes are required to account for behavioral and performance differences, is described. Application of the identification scheme to training effects in a manual control task is described.

Detection of radio emission from optically identified supernova remnants in M31

The Very Large Array was used to conduct a radio search at a wavelength of 20 cm for ten optically identified supernova remnants (SNRs) in M31. Five SNRs were detected, and for the other objects, upper limits to the emission were determined. On the average, the surface brightness of an SNR in M31 appears to be fainter than that of an SNR in the Galaxy. It is suggested that the median surface brightness at a given diameter is higher in late-type spirals than in Sb systems.

Self-Identifying Reflecting Targets

Proposed scheme for target identification requires no radiation of energy by target itself. Instead, target alters light beam reflected from itself back to interrogating station in unique way. Interrogator then identifies target from its signature impressed on returned beam. Selfidentifying target useful in surveying, navigation, and remote monitoring (for example, of mountain-climbing parties.)

Shuttle imaging radar-B (SIR-B) data analysis for identifying rainfall event occurrence and intensity

The utility of SIR-B data were evaluated for the detection and measurement of rainfall events, and applications of SIR-B data were developed to the improvement of existing rainfall models. During the SIR-B mission, EarthSat monitored rainfall events occurring within the conterminous United States. The GOES scenes form showed rainfall activity within the conterminous U.S. during the SIR-B mission. Swaths of the actual SIR-B data taken were plotted onto the GOES satellite scenes most closely representing the time of the Shuttle overpass. The JPL provided EarthSat with available SIR-B imagery in paper print form representing the appropriate requested data takes. EarthSat identified the collateral data required for site characterization during subsequent SIR-B contracts with JPL.

Flow cytometry analysis of hormone receptors on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells to identify stress-induced neuroendocrine effects

Understanding the role of circulating peptide hormones in the pathogenesis of space-flight induced disorders would be greatly facilitated by a method which monitors chronic levels of hormones and their effects upon in vivo cell physiology. Single and simultaneous multiparameter flow cytometry analysis was employed to identify subpopulations of mononuclear cells bearing receptors for ACTH, Endorphin, and Somatomedin-C using monoclonal antibodies and monospecific antisera with indirect immunofluorescence. Blood samples were obtained from normal donors and subjects participating in decompression chamber studies (acute stress), medical student academic examination (chronic stress), and a drug study (Dexamethasone). Preliminary results indicate most ACTH and Endorphin receptor positive cells are monocytes and B-cells, exhibit little diurnal variation but the relative percentages of receptor positive cells are influenced by exposure to various stressors and ACTH inhibition. This study demonstrates the capability of flow cytometry analysis to study cell surface hormone receptor regulation which should allow insight into neuroendocrine modulation of the immune and other cellular systems during exposure to stress or microgravity.

Effects of noise on modal parameters identified by the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm

The basic concept of the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm for modal parameter identification and model reduction is extended to minimize the distortion of the identified parameters caused by noise. The mathematical foundation for the properties of accuracy indicators, such as the singular values of the data matrix and modal amplitude coherence, is provided, based on knowledge of the noise characteristics. These indicators quantitatively discriminate noise from system information and are used to reduce the realized system model to a better approximation of the true model. Monte Carlo Simulations are included to support the analytical studies.
