Transitions in Fe-, Co-, Cu-, and Zn-like ions of W and Re

The spectra of highly ionized W and Re were observed by using laser-produced plasmas and a 3-m grazing-incidence spectrograph. Transitions in Fe- through Zn-like ions were identified. Wavelengths in the range 7-75 A were measured with an uncertainty of + or - 0.015 A, and energy levels were derived from the measured wavelengths. The ionization limits of Cu-like W and Re were determined.

The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer mission

The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) mission will be the first user of NASA's new Explorer platform. The instrumentation included on this mission consists of three grazing incidence scanning telescopes, a deep survey instrument and an EUV spectrometer. The bandpass covered is 80 to 900 A. During the first six months of the mission, the scanning telescopes will be used to make all-sky maps in four bandpasses; astronomical sources wil be detected and their positions determined to an accuracy of 0.1 deg. The deep survey instrument will survey the sky with higher sensitivity along the ecliptic in two bandpasses between 80 and 500 A. Engineering and design aspects of the science payload and features of the instrument design are described.

Imaging characteristics of the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer microchannel plate detectors

The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) satellite will conduct an all-sky survey over the wavelength range from 70 A to 760 A using four grazing-incidence telescopes and seven microchannel-plate (MCP) detectors. The imaging photon-counting MCP detectors have active areas of 19.6 cm2. Photon arrival position is determined using a wedge-and-strip anode and associated pulse-encoding electronics. The imaging characteristics of the EUVE flight detectors are presented including image distortion, flat-field response, and spatial differential nonlinearity. Also included is a detailed discussion of image distortions due to the detector mechanical assembly, the wedge-and-strip anode, and the electronics. Model predictions of these distortions are compared to preflight calibration images which show distortions less than 1.3 percent rms of the detector diameter of 50 mm before correction. The plans for correcting these residual detector image distortions to less than 0.1 percent rms are also presented.

Transmission grating spectroscopy and the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF)

The use of transmission gratings with grazing-incidence telescopes in celestial X-ray astrononmy is reviewed. The basic properties of transmission grating spectrometers and the use of 'phased' gratings to enhance the diffraction efficiency are outlined. The fabrication of the gratings is examined, giving special attention to the AXAF High Energy Transmission Grating. The performance of finite-period thick gratings is briefly discussed, and the performance of the transmission grating spectrometers planned for SPECTROSAT and AXAF are examined.

Advances in photographic X-ray imaging for solar astronomy

The technique of obtaining quantitative data from high resolution soft X-ray photographic images produced by grazing incidence optics was successfully developed to a high degree during the Solar Research Sounding Rocket Program and the S-054 X-Ray Spectrographic Telescope Experiment Program on Skylab. Continued use of soft X-ray photographic imaging in sounding rocket flights of the High Resolution Solar Soft X-Ray Imaging Payload has provided opportunities to further develop these techniques. The developments discussed include: (1) The calibration and use of an inexpensive, commercially available microprocessor controlled drum type film processor for photometric film development; (2) The use of Kodak Technical Pan 2415 film and Kodak SO-253 High Speed Holographic film for improved resolution; and (3) The application of a technique described by Cook, Ewing, and Sutton for determining the film characteristics curves from density histograms of the flight film. Although the superior sensitivity, noise level, and linearity of microchannel plate and CCD detectors attracts the development efforts of many groups working in soft X-ray imaging, the high spatial resolution and dynamic range as well as the reliability and ease of application of photographic media assures the continued use of these techniques in solar X-ray astronomy observations.

Near-wall, three-dimensional turbulence measurements: A challenge for laser velocimetry

A new laser velocimeter approach is presented, which has distinct advantages in near-wall, two- and three-dimensional turbulence measurement applications. The approach does require placing a probe into the flow; but in return, there are some important benefits, such as, the direct measurement of the crossflow velocity, w, at a grazing incidence, and the ability to size optical components for the scale of the flow rather than the size of the facility. Promising resuls were obtained with this approach for a two-dimensional turbulent boundary layer.

Spectral observations of the extreme ultraviolet astronomical background radiation

Observations in the FUV and soft X-ray bands suggest that the ISM contains several components of high-temperature gas (100,000-1 million K). If large volumes of local interstellar space are filled with this hot plasma, emission lines will be produced in the EUV. Diffuse EUV radiation, however, has only been detected with photometric instruments; no spectral measurements exist below 520 A. A unique grazing-incidence spectrometer to study the diffuse emission between 80 and 650 A with resolution 10-30 A was successfully flown on a sounding rocket in April 1986, and a preliminary analysis reveals several features. In addition to the expected interplanetary He I 584 A emission and the geocoronal He II 304 A emission, other features appear which may orginate in the hot ionized interstellar gas.

Spectrometer system for diffuse extreme ultraviolet radiation

A unique grazing incidence spectrometer system has been designed to study diffuse line emission between 80 and 650 A with 10-30 A resolution. The minimum detectable emission line strength during a 5-min observation ranges from 100-2000 ph/sq cm sec str. The instrument uses mechanically ruled reflection gratings placed in front of a linear array of mirrors. These mirrors focus the spectral image on microchannel plate detectors located behind thin filters. The field of view is 40 min of arc by 15 deg, and there is no spatial imaging. This instrument has been fabricated, calibrated, and successfully flown on a sounding rocket to observe the astronomical background radiation.

Identification of hydrogenlike and heliumlike transitions in the spectrum of laser-produced magnesium plasmas

Nonresonance spectral lines of Mg XII and Mg XI emitted by magnesium laser-produced plasmas have been observed in the extreme-vacuum-ultraviolet region and their transitions classified. As many as eight beams of the Omega laser system of the Laboratory for Laser Energetics at the University of Rochester were linearly focused onto magnesium-coated flat targets to produce linear plasma radiation sources from 3 to 6 mm long. The spectra were photographed end-on with a grazing-incidence spectrograph. The identified Mg XII lines are classified as 2s-3p, 2p-3d, 2s-4p, 2p-4d, and 3d-4f transitions. The identified Mg XI lines are classified as 1s2s-1s3p, 1s2p-1s3d, 1s2p-1s4d, 1s3p-1s4d, and 1s3d-1s4f.

Formula for the rms blur circle radius of Wolter telescope based on aberration theory

A formula for the rms blur circle for Wolter telescopes has been derived using the transverse ray aberration expressions of Saha (1985), Saha (1984), and Saha (1986). The resulting formula for the rms blur circle radius over an image plane and a formula for the surface of best focus based on third-, fifth-, and seventh-order aberration theory predict results in good agreement with exact ray tracing. It has also been shown that one of the two terms in the empirical formula of VanSpeybroeck and Chase (1972), for the rms blur circle radius of a Wolter I telescope can be justified by the aberration theory results. Numerical results are given comparing the rms blur radius and the surface of best focus vs the half-field angle computed by skew ray tracing and from analytical formulas for grazing incidence Wolter I-II telescopes and a normal incidence Cassegrain telescope.

The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer - Overview and calibration

The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) is a NASA-funded astronomy mission that will operate in the 70 to 760 A band. The science payload, which has been designed and built by the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, consists of three grazing incidence scanning telescopes and an EUV spectrometer/deep survey instrument. This paper gives details of the planned mission profile and an overview of the instrumentation that the science payload comprises. Topics such as the thermal design, contamination control, and details of the electronics system are discussed. Finally, the results of the calibration of the various subsystems that make up the EUVE instrumentation are reviewed, and the calibration plan for the integrated EUVE instruments is discussed.

Measurement of the point spread function and effective area of the Solar-A Soft X-ray Telescope mirror

A grazing incidence solar X-ray telescope, Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT), will be flown on the Solar-A satellite in 1991. Measurements have been conducted to determine the focal length, Point Spread Function (PSF), and effective area of the SXT mirror. The measurements were made with pinholes, knife edges, a CCD, and a proportional counter. The results show the 1/r character of the PSF, and indicate a half power diameter of 4.9 arcsec and an effective area of 1.33 sq cm at 13.3 A (0.93 keV). The mirror was found to provide a high contrast image with very little X-ray scattering.

Microscope Would Image X and Gamma Rays

Microscope contains Bragg-reflecting, grazing-incidence reflectors, filter wheel, and detector. Multiple nested coaxial pairs of reflectors used to form images simultaneously at multiple wavelengths. Collects and focuses radiation to produce images with moderate spectral resolution and high spatial resolution. Enables use of smaller, cheaper, better-shielded detectors. Combination of features provides new information of unprecedented value in several fields of research; probing fine structures of pulsed plasmas, investigating minute variations in structures of material specimens penetrated only by hard-x or gamma rays, or in producing maps of distributions of radioisotopes in biological specimens.

A laser Doppler velocimeter approach for near-wall three-dimensional turbulence measurements

A near-wall laser Doppler velocimeter approach is described that relies on a beam-turning probe which makes possible the direct measurement of the crossflow velocity at a grazing incident and the placement of optical components close to the flow region of interest regardless of test facility size. Other important elements of the approach are the use of digital frequency processing, an optically smooth measurement surface, and observation of the sensing volume at 90 degrees. The combination was found to dramatically reduce noise-in-signal effects caused by surface light scattering. Turbulent boundary-layer data to within 20 microns (y(sup+) approximately equal to 1) of the surface are presented which illustrate the potential of the approach.

On the propagation of plane waves above an impedance surface

The propagation of grazing incidence plane waves along a finite impedance boundary is investigated. A solution of the semi-infinite problem, where a harmonic motion, parallel to the boundary, is imposed along a line perpendicular to the boundary, is obtained. This solution consists of quasiplane waves, waves moving parallel to the boundary with amplitude and phase variations perpendicular to the boundary. Several approximations to the full solution are considered.

Spectral observations of the extreme ultraviolet background

The design of a grazing incidence spectrometer for measuring the diffusive extreme-ultraviolet astronomical background radiation is outlined, and the data obtained on the diffusive background between 80 and 650 A is discussed. The strongest emission line detected is solar backscattered He I 584 A radiation; solar 304 A radiation resonantly scattered by geocoronal He II is observed in both first and second order; and each of three remaining spectral features is found to be consistent with those expected from hot interstellar gas. Of these features, the strongest is the feature at 635 A identified as 630 A O v emission. A feature centered at about 99 A is fitted by a cluster of Fe XVIII and Fe XIX lines from gas at log T = 6.6-6.8, and a feature discovered near 178 A is found to be consistent with Fe X and Fe XI emission from gas at log T = 6.
