Errors in magnetic direction finding due to nonvertical lightning channels

A theory showing that errors in lightning magnetic direction finding due to nonvertical source orientations are minimized by detecting the field from the lowest possible channel section is presented. For 99 cloud-to-ground lightning channels photographed in Arizona, 45 exhibited a bottom few hundred meters within about 8 deg of the vertical, the standard deviation of the distribution of lower-channel tilt angles being about 18 deg. These experimental results, coupled with theory, suggest that if a wideband gated direction finder is used, polarization errors due to nonvertical sources can be kept less than 1 deg for lightning beyond 10 km.

Direct imaging of planetary systems around nearby stars

It is shown that by utilizing a space-borne telescope it may be possible to directly image planetary systems around the nearest stars. Direct imaging, while limited to the nearest stars, would provide a great deal of information on the planet, over and above the planet's orbital elements - estimates of the planet's size and rotation rate, and the presence or absence of an atmosphere are all possible if light from the planet can be separated from light from the star. It is shown that a Jupiter-like planet would be detectable around several of the nearest stars.

Propagation directions of hydromagnetic waves in interplanetary space - Pioneer 10 and 11

The real and imaginary parts of spectral matrices of magnetic field fluctuations near 4 and 5 AU are used separately to generate estimates of hydromagnetic wave normal directions over the frequency range 0.00001 to 0.01 Hz in the spacecraft frame. Both procedures suggest the predominance of the Alfven mode over the fast and slow MHD modes among transverse magnetic field perturbations. Both procedures also show that the Alfven mode is more common among transverse perturbations at 4 AU than at 5 AU. Statistical techniques are for estimating uncertainties in computed wave normal directions and it is concluded that the real parts of the spectral matrices are more useful than the imaginary parts in specifying wave normals at times of magnetic quiet in the solar wind near 4 and 5 AU.

Magnetic field directional discontinuities. I - Minimum variance errors

The paper deals with a statistical analysis of the errors associated with a minimum variance analysis of directional discontinuities by use of an idealized model of these discontinuities and various simulations, and also by an examination of actual Mariner 10 interplanetary magnetic field data. An empirical expression is derived for the magnitude of the error in an estimated discontinuity normal component, relative to the total field across the directional discontinuity. The analysis was performed primarily to aid in differentiating between interplanetary tangential and rotational discontinuities observed by Mariner 10.

Direct thermal water splitting by concentrated solar radiation for hydrogen production. Phase O: Proof of concept experiment

The direct production of hydrogen from water and solar energy concentrated into a high temperature aperture is described. A solar powered reactor able to dissociate water vapor and to separate the reaction product at high temperature was developed, and direct water splitting has been achieved in a laboratory reactor. Water vapor and radiative heating from a carbon dioxide laser are fed into the reactor, and water vapor enriched in hydrogen and water vapor enriched in oxygen are produced. The enriched water vapors are separated through a separation membrane, a small disc of zirconium dioxide heated to a range of 1800 k to 2800 k. To avoid water vapor condensation within the reactor, the total pressure within the reactor was limited to 0.15 torr. A few modifications would enable the reactor to be operated at an increased pressure of a few torrs. More substantial modifications would allow for a reaction pressure of 0.1 atmosphere.

Velocity vector control system augmented with direct lift control

A pilot-controlled stability control system that employs direct lift control (spoiler control) with elevator control to control the flight path angle of an aircraft is described. A computer on the aircraft generates an elevator control signal and a spoiler control signal, using a pilot-controlled pitch control signal and pitch rate, vertical velocity, roll angle, groundspeed, engine pressure ratio and vertical acceleration signals which are generated on the aircraft. The direct lift control by the aircraft spoilers improves the response of the aircraft flight path angle and provides short term flight path stabilization against environmental disturbances.

Direction sensitive laser velocimeter

A laser velocimeter is described which determines the direction of movement of particles. A laser produces a transmitted beam that illuminates the volume under investigation. The backscattered light is divided into two equal intensity beams. A first part of a sample of the transmitted beam is mixed with one of the two equal intensity beams and applied to a first photodetector. A second part of the sample is phase shifted by 90 deg, mixed with the other of the two equal intensity beams and applied to a second photodetector. The output of the first photodetector is phase shifted by 90 deg and then multiplied with the output of the second photodetector to produce a signal indicative of direction of movement.

Direct solar and earth-albedo radiation pressure effects on the orbit of Pageos 1

The orbit of the Pageos 1 balloon satellite was analyzed for the effects of direct solar and albedo radiation pressure. Anomalous behavior occurred in the orbital acceleration near the end of the 2nd year of the satellite's lifetime which may have resulted from the change in its shape; the shape has become slightly oblate, spinning about a minor axis and precessing about the direction of the sun. The near-earth micrometeoroid particle flux was estimated to be 5 x 10 to the -8th/sq cm/s by analyzing the balloon inflation process with sublimating compounds and the resulting variation of the satellite mass due to the leakage through the holes produced by micrometeoroid bombardment.

Bi-directional streaming of solar wind electrons greater than 80 eV - ISEE evidence for a closed-field structure within the driver gas of an interplanetary shock

In near time coincidence with the arrival of helium enriched plasma driving the shock wave disturbance of November 12-13, 1978, strong bi-directional streaming of solar wind electrons greater than about 80 eV was observed with Los Alamos instrumentation on ISEE 3. The streaming persisted for many hours simultaneously parallel and anti-parallel to the interplanetary magnetic field which was directed roughly perpendicular to the sun-satellite line. This example of bidirectional streaming cannot be explained by field line connection to the earth's bow shock or the outward propagating interplanetary shock which passed ISEE 3 approximately 16 hours earlier. The event is explained if the local interplanetary field was a part of a magnetic bottle rooted at the sun or a disconnected loop propagating outward.

Direct measurement of lower atmospheric vertical potential differences

A high impedance system has been developed to make direct measurements of the atmospheric potential difference up to several thousand feet. A tethered balloon flown from Wallops Island, Virginia was used to loft a high voltage, insulated wire and a conducting collector in a test flight to 550 meters for two days of experiments in October 1980. The balloon was equipped with a payload to measure exact altitude, wind speed and direction, and other meteorological parameters. Electric potentials of 170,000 volts at 550 meters were measured. The collected currents which could be drawn through the wire by grounding the lower end were in the 10 microamp range indicating a system impedance of about 10 to the 10th ohms. This paper describes the apparatus and details of these measurements.

Direct current ballast circuit for metal halide lamp

A direct current ballast circuit for a two electrode metal halide lamp is described. Said direct current ballast circuit includes a low voltage DC input and a high frequency power amplifier and power transformer for developing a high voltage output. The output voltage is rectified by diodes and filtered by inductor and capacitor to provide a regulated DC output through commutating diodes to one terminal of the lamp at the output terminal. A feedback path from the output of the filter capacitor through the bias resistor to power the high frequency circuit which includes the power amplifier and the power transformer for sustaining circuit operations during low voltage transients on the input DC supply is described. A current sensor connected to the output of the lamp through terminal for stabilizing lamp current following breakdown of the lamp is described.

Modification to Scott's method for direct integration of gaseous transmission to improve speed and accuracy

Two limitations to the method of Scott for rapid direct integration of gaseous transmission in a finite spectral interval over an inhomogeneous optical path are discussed. One of these is the inability to use a precomputed form of the Voigt line shape, which can be parameterized via the linewidth alone. This is rectified using the Voigt shape approximation of Kielkopf, which involves a linear combination of three functions which can be pre-computed: the Lorentz shape, the Doppler shape and a correction function. The other limitation involves situations where lines must be treated individually, either line positions must be known with great precision or a uniform value for the widths of all lines in the spectral interval does not describe the transmission adequately. In this case, the strongest lines are treated individually, while the remainder are treated assuming uniform line widths and line positions coincident with positions on the frequency grid, i.e. following Scott's method directly.

Wind direction alias removal studies of Seasat scatterometer-derived wind fields

Seasat SASS fields for the North Atlantic were employed to test if meteorological features were discernible within the Seasat-produced wind fields, and if the features aided in determining a unique wind vector solution. Two groups were formed to work in isolation from each other until a true wind vector field was obtained for each SASS observation. The SASS data covered 1500 km swaths, and the angle of the Seasat antennas relative to the earth was known. Visible and IR data, along with surface weather stations, ship and ship buoy data were also available to the interpreters. Two-vector solutions by the two teams showed almost perfect agreement, and the alias problem was noted to reduce to a selection of two vectors 180 deg apart. Comparisons with the surface measurements in regards to wind directions resulted in agreement to within a standard deviation of 20% for direction. The SASS data is concluded to be useful for producing streamlines, isotachs, and mesoscale as well as cyclone-scale features.

Structure and creep rupture properties of directionally solidified eutectic gamma/gamma-prime-alpha alloy

A simple ternary gamma/gamma-prime-alpha alloy of nominal composition (wt-%) Ni-32Mo-6Al has been directionally solidified at 17 mm/h and tested in creep rupture at 1073, 1173, and 1273 K. A uniform microstructure consisting of square-shaped Mo fibers in a gamma + gamma-prime matrix was found despite some variation in the molybdenum and aluminum concentrations along the growth direction. Although the steady-state creep rate is well described by the normal stress temperature equation, the stress exponent (12) and the activation energy (580 kJ/mol) are high. The rupture behavior is best characterized by the Larson-Miller parameter where the constant equals 20.

Variation of directional reflectance factors with structural changes of a developing alfalfa canopy

Directional reflectance factors of an alfalfa canopy were determined and related to canopy structure, agronomic variables, and irradiance conditions at four periods during a cutting cycle. Nadir and off-nadir reflectance factors decreased with increasing biomass in Thematic Mapper band 3(0.63-0.69 micrometer) and increased with increasing biomass in band 4(0.76-0.90 micrometer). The sensor view angle had less impact on perceived reflectance as the alfalfa progressed from an erectophile canopy of stems after harvest to a near planophile canopy of leaves at maturity. Studies of directional reflectance are needed for testing and upgrading vegetation canopy models and to aid in the complex interpretation problems presented by aircraft scanners and pointable satellites where illumination and viewing geometries may vary widely. Distinct changes in the patterns of radiance observed by a sensor as structural and biomass changes occur are keys to monitoring the growth and condition of crops.

Preliminary science report on the directional solidification of hypereutectic cast iron during KC-135 low-G maneuvers

An ADSS-P directional solidification furnace was reconfigured for operation on the KC-135 low-g aircraft. The system offers many advantages over quench ingot methods for study of the effects of sedimentation and convection on alloy formation. The directional sodification furnace system was first flown during the September 1982 series of flights. The microstructure of the hypereutectic cast iron sample solidified on one of these flights suggests a low-g effect on graphite morphology. Further experiments are needed to ascertain that this effect is due to low-gravity and to deduce which of the possible mechanisms is responsible for it.

A measurement of the magnetic field direction at the site of major flares

Lundstedt et al. (1981) showed that the direction of the photospheric magnetic field at the site of a flare is a good predictor of the solar wind velocity observed at earth four days later. It is described here how the field direction was obtained, and possible errors involved in the determination of the angle are discussed. The discussion also includes a characterization of the solar active regions.
