Hydrothermal Growth of Magnetically Frustrated Crystals: Lanthanide Stannate Pyrochlores as a Prototype

One important test bed system for frustrated magnetism is the pyrochlore lattice with the formula A2B2O7 in the cubic space group Fd3(-)m. Both the A and B sites occupy crystallographic trigonal sites and both sites possess a tetrahedral relationship with the other similar metal ion sites. These symmetry relationships generate a 3 D frustrated structure. In frustrated magnetic systems, typically a trivalent lanthanide ion occupies the A site and a magnetically silent tetravalent ion (Ti, Zr, Sn, etc.) occupies the B site. A classical problem related to the crystal growth of these compounds is sample quality. As refractory oxides, the traditional synthesis and crystal growth techniques require high temperatures, which creates two problems that are quite common and endemic to the pyrochlores. One is oxide lattice defects and the other is A/B site disorder. Both issues often occur in the same crystals at the same time and can have a significant impact on the study of physical properties. A hydrothermal approach can be applied to this problem. The relatively low crystal growth temperatures (600-720˚C) greatly minimize nonstoichiometry, lattice defects and A/B site disorder. The reduction of these pervasive imperfections significantly increases the quality of the observed physical property data. This talk will focus on the lanthanide stannates Ln2Sn2O7 as a prototype test bed of these systems. The stannates are among the few building blocks that can stabilize the pyrochlore structure type for all the lanthanides and they serve as an excellent proving ground for a wide range of physical properties. The synthesis and crystal growth of the lanthanide stannates will be reviewed, along with a discussion of some of the physical properties that result from the frustrated magnetic states of these low defect crystals.

The Calpain-7 protease functions together with the ESCRT-III protein IST1 within the midbody to regulate the timing and completion of abscission

The Endosomal Sorting Complexes Required for Transport (ESCRT) machinery mediates the membrane fission step that completes cytokinetic abscission and separates dividing cells. Filaments composed of ESCRT-III subunits constrict membranes of the intercellular bridge midbody to the abscission point. These filaments also bind and recruit cofactors whose activities help execute abscission and/or delay abscission timing in response to mitotic errors via the NoCut/Abscission checkpoint. We previously showed that the ESCRT-III subunit IST1 binds the cysteine protease Calpain-7 (CAPN7) and that CAPN7 is required for both efficient abscission and NoCut checkpoint maintenance. Here, we report biochemical and crystallographic studies showing that the tandem microtubule-interacting and trafficking (MIT) domains of CAPN7 bind simultaneously to two distinct IST1 MIT interaction motifs. Structure-guided point mutations in either CAPN7 MIT domain disrupted IST1 binding in vitro and in cells, and depletion/rescue experiments showed that the CAPN7-IST1 interaction is required for (1) CAPN7 recruitment to midbodies, (2) efficient abscission, and (3) NoCut checkpoint arrest. CAPN7 proteolytic activity is also required for abscission and checkpoint maintenance. Hence, IST1 recruits CAPN7 to midbodies, where its proteolytic activity is required to regulate and complete abscission.

Probing the atomically diffuse interfaces in Pd@Pt core-shell nanoparticles in three dimensions

Deciphering the three-dimensional atomic structure of solid-solid interfaces in core-shell nanomaterials is the key to understand their catalytical, optical and electronic properties. Here, we probe the three-dimensional atomic structures of palladium-platinum core-shell nanoparticles at the single-atom level using atomic resolution electron tomography. We quantify the rich structural variety of core-shell nanoparticles with heteroepitaxy in 3D at atomic resolution. Instead of forming an atomically-sharp boundary, the core-shell interface is found to be atomically diffuse with an average thickness of 4.2 Å, irrespective of the particle’s morphology or crystallographic texture. The high concentration of Pd in the diffusive interface is highly related to the free Pd atoms dissolved from the Pd seeds, which is confirmed by atomic images of Pd and Pt single atoms and sub-nanometer clusters using cryogenic electron microscopy. These results advance our understanding of core-shell structures at the fundamental level, providing potential strategies into precise nanomaterial manipulation and chemical property regulation.

A continuous symmetry breaking measure for finite clusters using Jensen-Shannon divergence

A quantitative measure of symmetry breaking is introduced that allows the quantification of which symmetries are most strongly broken due to the introduction of some kind of defect in a perfect structure. The method uses a statistical approach based on the Jensen-Shannon divergence. The measure is calculated by comparing the transformed atomic density function with its original. Software code is presented that carries the calculations out numerically using Monte Carlo methods. The behavior of this symmetry breaking measure is tested for various cases including finite size crystallites (where the surfaces break the crystallographic symmetry), atomic displacements from high symmetry positions, and collective motions of atoms due to rotations of rigid octahedra. Finally, the approach provides a powerful tool for assessing local symmetry breaking and offers new insights that can help researchers understand how different structural distortions affect different symmetry operations.

Local Structural Coherence and Interfacial Charge Transfer in Cu 2 ⁢S/Mo⁢S 2 Heterostructure

Precise control over electronic coupling at nanoscale interfaces is critical for designing materials with tunable charge-transfer behavior and catalytic function. Heterostructures with locally coherent interfaces provide a platform for interrogating interfacial charge redistribution in coupled material systems. Here, we report Cu 2 ⁢S/Mo⁢S 2 heterostructures exhibiting nanoscale crystallographic alignment, which are synthesized through a rapid thermal transformation pathway. We employed electrochemical reduction reactions to probe interfacial charge transfer, revealing shifts in product distribution attributable to modified interfacial energetics, even in the absence of optimized catalytic performance. The observed formate Faradaic efficiency suggests that interfacial electronic modulation in the heterostructure shifts product selectivity towards formate, highlighting how interface-driven electronic modulation can direct reaction pathways and influence product selectivity. Optimizing catalyst loading, architecture, and reactor configuration will be critical for future improvement. Structural and compositional integrity were confirmed through powder x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Electron transfer between Cu 2 ⁢S and Mo⁢S 2 domains was further evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, while selected-area electron diffraction revealed local crystallographic alignment consistent with a local epitaxial relationship at the Cu 2 S/Mo⁢S 2 heterointerface. To illustrate the broader applicability of this approach, a Zn⁢S/Mo⁢S 2 heterostructure was also synthesized using the same microwave strategy, confirming the generalizability of interfacial engineering principles across metal sulfide-Mo⁢S 2 systems. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that controlled local epitaxial alignment serves as an effective design principle for tuning interfacial energetics and catalytic reactivity in complex heterostructure materials.

Computational Modeling and Experimental Characterization of Martensitic Transformations in Nicoal for Self-Sensing Materials

Fundamental changes to aero-vehicle management require the utilization of automated health monitoring of vehicle structural components. A novel method is the use of self-sensing materials, which contain embedded sensory particles (SP). SPs are micron-sized pieces of shape-memory alloy that undergo transformation when the local strain reaches a prescribed threshold. The transformation is a result of a spontaneous rearrangement of the atoms in the crystal lattice under intensified stress near damaged locations, generating acoustic waves of a specific spectrum that can be detected by a suitably placed sensor. The sensitivity of the method depends on the strength of the emitted signal and its propagation through the material. To study the transition behavior of the sensory particle inside a metal matrix under load, a simulation approach based on a coupled atomistic-continuum model is used. The simulation results indicate a strong dependence of the particle's pseudoelastic response on its crystallographic orientation with respect to the loading direction and suggest possible ways of optimizing particle sensitivity. The technology of embedded sensory particles will serve as the key element in an autonomous structural health monitoring system that will constantly monitor for damage initiation in service, which will enable quick detection of unforeseen damage initiation in real-time and during onground inspections.

Syntheses, solution behavior, and computational bond length analyses of trifluoromethyl and perfluoroethyl cuprate salts

Heteroleptic cuprate salts of the form [X-Cu-Y][(SIMes) 2 Cu] (SIMes = 1,3-dimesitylimidazolin-2-ylidene, X and Y = permutations of Cl, CF 3 , C 2 F 5 ) were generated by equilibrating mixtures of [(SIMes)Cu-X] and [(SIMes)Cu-Y] in CD 2 Cl 2 solvent. Here, the solubility features of the cuprates relative to the neutral species permitted the structural characterizations of new cuprates, including the first example of a mixed fluoroalkylated cuprate [(CF 3 )Cu(C 2 F 5 )][(SIMes) 2 Cu]. Computational studies (DFT and CCSD(T)) of fluoroalkylated cuprates generate Cu-C distances that are shorter than those in hydrocarbon analogues – a trend that in some cases may conflict with crystallographically determined values.

First-principles investigation of uranium mononitride (UN): Effect of magnetic ordering, spin-orbit interactions and exchange correlation functional

Uranium mononitride (UN) is a promising nuclear fuel that combines the advantageous properties of readily used UO 2 and uranium alloys. Various properties of UN have been previously studied using different density functional theory (DFT) methodologies; however, there are still inconsistencies when it comes to the dynamical stability and defect properties of UN. We address these inconsistencies by studying the UN phonons and defect properties using DFT calculations employing two generalized gradient approximation (GGA) exchange-correlation functionals: PBE and AM05, with and without an added on-site Coulomb repulsion term (+U). Furthermore, we investigate the importance of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) when calculating the properties of UN. We use the different methodologies to determine the preference of UN to have antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering, as seen in experiments, or ferromagnetic (FM) ordering of the uranium spins. We compare the crystallographic properties, density of states, the DFT X-ray photoelectron spectra and phonon dispersions calculated using the different methodologies. We demonstrate that GGA + U reproduces the AFM ordering in UN, but the crystal structure is dynamically unstable. We also show that magnetic ordering is important in finding the lowest energy defective structure, and that SOC has a distinct influence on the energy of the different uranium interstitial defects. Lastly, we discuss the point defect formation energies under U-rich and N-rich conditions, and the stoichiometric formation energies calculated with the different methodologies, providing insight into the observed tendency for forming hypostoichiometric UN.

Crystallographic Characterization of Sodium Ions in a Bacterial Leucine/Sodium Symporter

Na + is the most abundant ion in living organisms and plays essential roles in regulating nutrient uptake, muscle contraction, and neurotransmission. The identification of Na + in protein structures is crucial for gaining a deeper understanding of protein function in a physiological context. LeuT, a bacterial homolog of the neurotransmitter:sodium symporter family, uses the Na + gradient to power the uptake of amino acids into cells and has been used as a paradigm for the study of Na + -dependent transport systems. We have devised a low-energy multi-crystal approach for characterizing low-Z (Z ≤ 20) anomalous scattering ions such as Na + , Mg 2+ , K + , and Ca 2+ by combining Bijvoet-difference Fourier syntheses for ion detection and f” refinements for ion speciation. Using the approach, we experimentally identify two Na + bound near the central leucine binding site in LeuT. Using LeuT microcrystals, we also demonstrate that Na + may be depleted to study conformational changes in the LeuT transport cycle.

Ready Access to Anhydrous Anionic Lanthanide Acetates by Using Imidazolium Acetate Ionic Liquids as the Reaction Medium

Abstract Access to lanthanide acetate coordination compounds is challenged by the tendency of lanthanides to coordinate water and the plethora of acetate coordination modes. A straightforward, reproducible synthetic procedure by treating lanthanide chloride hydrates with defined ratios of the ionic liquid (IL) 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium acetate ([C 2 mim][OAc]) has been developed. This reaction pathway leads to two isostructural crystalline anhydrous coordination complexes, the polymeric [C 2 mim] n [{Ln 2 (OAc) 7 } n ] and the dimeric [C 2 mim] 2 [Ln 2 (OAc) 8 ], based on the ion size and the ratio of IL used. A reaction with an IL : Ln‐salt ratio of 5 : 1, where Ln=Nd, Sm, and Gd, led exclusively to the polymer, whilst for the heaviest lanthanides (Dy−Lu) the dimer was observed. Reaction with Eu and Tb resulted in a mixture of both polymeric and dimeric forms. When the amount of IL and/or the size of the cation was increased, the reaction led to only the dimeric compound for all the lanthanide series. Crystallographic analyses of the resulting salts revealed three different types of metal‐acetate coordination modes where η 2 μκ 2 is the most represented in both structure types.

Process-structure-property considerations for wire-based directed energy deposition of Ti-6Al-4V

Directed energy deposition (DED) is an attractive additive manufacturing (AM) process for large structural components. The rapid solidification and layer-by-layer process associated with DED results in non-ideal microstructures, such as large grains with strong crystallographic textures. These non-ideal microstructures can lead to severe anisotropy in the mechanical properties. Despite these challenges, DED has been identified as a potential solution for the manufacturing of near net shape Ti-6Al-4V preforms, replacing lost casting and forging capabilities. Two popular wire-based directed energy deposition (W-DED) processes were considered for the manufacturing of Ti-6Al-4V with assessments on their respective metallurgical and mechanical properties, as compared to a conventionally processed material. The two W-DED processes explored were wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) and electron beam additive manufacturing (EBAM). High throughput inspection and tensile testing procedures were utilized to generate statistically relevant data sets related to each process and sample orientation. The 2 AM technologies produced material with remarkably different microstructures and mechanical properties. Importantly, results revealed key differences in strength and ductility for the two disparate processes which were found to be related to differences in the metallurgical properties.

Magnetic and electronic properties unveil polaron formation in Eu$$_5$$In$$_2$$Sb$$_6$$

Abstract The intermetallic compound Eu $$_5$$ 5 In $$_2$$ 2 Sb $$_6$$ 6 , an antiferromagnetic material with nonsymmorphic crystalline structure, is investigated by magnetic, electronic transport and specific heat measurements. Being a Zintl phase, insulating behavior is expected. Our thermodynamic and magnetotransport measurements along different crystallographic directions strongly indicate polaron formation well above the magnetic ordering temperatures. Pronounced anisotropies of the magnetic and transport properties even above the magnetic ordering temperature are observed despite the Eu $$^{2+}$$ 2 + configuration which testify to complex and competing magnetic interactions between these ions and give rise to intricate phase diagrams discussed in detail. Our results provide a comprehensive framework for further detailed study of this multifaceted compound with possible nontrivial topology.

ThC 2 @C 82 versus Th@C 84 : unexpected formation of triangular thorium carbide cluster inside fullerenes

Synthesis of the first thorium-containing clusterfullerenes, ThC 2 @C s (6)–C 82 and ThC 2 @C 2 (5)–C 82 , is reported. These two novel actinide fullerene compounds were characterized by mass spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction crystallography, UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. Crystallographic studies reveal that the encapsulated ThC 2 clusters in both C s (6)–C 82 and C 2 (5)–C 82 feature a novel bonding structure with one thorium metal center connected by a C≡C unit, forming an isosceles triangular configuration, which has not been hitherto observed for endohedral fullerenes or for solid phase thorium carbides. Electronic structure calculations assign a formal electronic structure of [Th 4+ (C 2 ) 2- ] 2+ @[C 82 ] 2- , with pronounced donation bonding from (C 2 ) 2- to Th 4+ , secondary backbonding from the fullerene to thorium and Th–C double bond character in both compounds. This work presents a new family of endohedral fullerenes, MC 2 @C 2n-2 , being unexpected isomers of MC 2n , and provides broader understanding of thorium bonding.

In situ observation of medium range ordering and crystallization of amorphous TiO 2 ultrathin films grown by atomic layer deposition

The evolution of medium range ordering (MRO) and crystallization behavior of amorphous TiO 2 films grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD) were studied using in situ four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy. The films remain fully amorphous when grown at 120 °C or below, but they start showing crystallization of anatase phases when grown at 140 °C or above. The degree of MRO increases as a function of temperature and maximizes at 140 °C when crystallization starts to occur, which suggests that crystallization prerequires the development of nanoscale MRO that serves as the site of nucleation. In situ annealing of amorphous TiO 2 films grown at 80 °C shows enhancement of MRO but limited number of nucleation, which suggests that post-annealing develops only a small portion of MRO into crystal nuclei. The MRO regions that do not develop into crystals undergo structural relaxation instead, which provides insights into the critical size and degree of ordering and the stability of certain MRO types at different temperatures. In addition, crystallographic defects were observed within crystal phases, which likely negate corrosion resistance of the film. Our result highlights the importance of understanding and controlling MRO for optimizing ALD-grown amorphous films for next-generation functional devices and renewable energy applications.

Probing the solidification of quasicrystals via joint experiment and simulation (Final Report)

Quasicrystals (QCs) possess long-range positional order but non-crystallographic orientational order. Their classically ‘forbidden’ symmetry has long attracted the interest of scientists worldwide. Despite their frequent observation in both metal alloys and soft matter structures in the 35 years since their discovery, little is known about how QCs evolve from a liquid, amorphous, or crystalline precursor. In this project, we sought to resolve the enigma of QC self-assembly through a combined experimental and computational program. The Shahani group employed in situ electron and synchrotron X ray imaging to peer into the growth dynamics of QCs in a liquid, covering a broad range of length scales and solidification pathways. Glotzer's team developed new simulation models incorporating phasonic defects — which are unique to quasicrystals — and used this model to investigate two grains growing together, closely mimicking the experimental conditions. While QCs remain exceptional structures, most compounds in the realm of intermetallics adopt non-trivial geometries. In fact, only around 6% of phases are comprised of the simplest sphere packings that researchers so readily associate with metals. State-of-the-art knowledge of phase transformations at the outset of this collaborative project did not encompass the remaining 94% of intermetallic compounds that possess complex and aperiodic structure types. Therefore, we expect that outcomes from this project will have immediate and profound impact on synthesis and processing science: our efforts will be used to not only explain the growth dynamics of QCs but also complex intermetallics more broadly.

Synthesis, structure, and transport properties of Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 clathrate solid solution

In this work, a new clathrate solid solution Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 ( x = 4, 8, 12) was synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state annealing method. The crystal structures of Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 were determined by single crystal x-ray diffraction. This clathrate solid solution crystallizes in the orthorhombic superstructure of clathrate-I type with 23 crystallographically independent framework sites, eight of them are occupied by Au/Cu and 15 are exclusively occupied by P atoms. The distribution of Au and Cu atoms over these eight framework sites is not random with a clear preference for Au to occupy the largest (Au/Cu)P 4 tetrahedra in the framework. The thermal stability and thermoelectric properties of the Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 solid solution were evaluated. Low thermal conductivity was achieved for Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 due to the combination of the host–guest crystal structure with rattling Ba atoms with the presence of heavy Au atoms and substitutional Cu/Au disorder in the clathrate framework.

Direct measurement of the effective properties of an additively manufactured titanium octet truss unit cell using high energy X-ray diffraction

Additively manufactured lattice structures offer a high specific strength-to-density ratio in comparison to conventional, fully dense parts. The small feature size and intricate geometry of lattice structures make it challenging to directly characterize their mechanical properties. This study presents direct measurement of the elastic mechanical properties of an additively manufactured titanium alloy octet truss unit cell. Strut stress and strain were measured using high-energy X-ray diffraction during quasi-static compressive loading. The crystallographic stress-strain relationship was converted into the stress-strain relationship of the octet truss lattice unit cell using the known symmetry of the struts. The sample studied herein was best fit by an orthorhombic linear elastic stress-strain relationship. In conclusion, this technique shows promise for studying additively manufactured lattice structures at length scales not previously reported.

Exploring the Role of Neutral 4-Amino-1,2,4-triazole in the Formation of Hexanuclear f-Element Hydrolysis Products

Our recent observations of an unexpected Ce(III) hydrolysis product from the reaction of 4-amino-1,2,4-triazole (4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) with CeCl 3 ·7H 2 O, [Ce 6 (μ 3 -O) 4 (μ 3 -OH) 2 (μ 3 -Cl) 2 (Cl) 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ]·7H 2 O, the first high-nuclearity lanthanide complex where all Ln atoms are connected pairwise through 12 N-donor ligands or 12 neutral bridging ligands of any type, prompted us to explore the utility of this ligand in trapping additional f-element examples. Reactions of LnCl 3 ·6H 2 O (Ln = Nd, Eu, Ho) with a large excess of 4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz (20 equiv) and with the addition of small amounts of water to help solubilize the metal salts led to the isolation of the unique hydrolysis products [Nd 6 (μ 3 -OH) 8 Cl 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ][Cl 4 ]·2H 2 O, [Eu 6 (μ 6 -Cl) 0.23 (μ 3 -O 0.77 ) 4 (μ 3 -O) 2.6 (μ 3 -Cl) 0.4 Cl 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ], and [Ho 6 (μ 6 -Cl) 0.21 (μ 3 -O 0.79 ) 4 (μ 3 -OH) 2 Cl 6 (μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 12 ][Cl] 3.4 . Here, we also report a Ce(III) analogue prepared in glassware contaminated with Pb(OAc) 2 , namely, [Ce 6 (μ 3 -OH) 8 (BrPbBr 5 )(μ 2 -4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz) 11.5 (OH 2 ) 6 ][Pb 0.84 Br 4.2 ][Br] 3.8 ·2(4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz)·3.6H 2 O. The Nd(III) complex is the structurally most ordered with a clear [Nd 6 (μ 3 -OH) 8 ] cluster core, while the Eu(III) and Ho(III) compounds contain partial occupancy of a μ 6 position and thus result in an incomplete Ln 6 O 9 cluster core formation. The crystallographic results suggest that the 4-NH 2 -1,2,4-Triaz ligand brings Ln(III) ions together, followed by the formation of an Ln 6 O 8 or Ln 6 O 9 core with whatever remaining anions or ligands can be incorporated. Given the complexity of the hydrolysis products of nuclear waste, we expect to continue to find a myriad of closely related complex structures of these types for the f-elements.
