Space industrialization studies - An overview

An overview of NASA's current planning for a space industrialization program is described as an introduction to the papers on Space Industrialization being presented by Rockwell International Corporation and Science Applications Incorporated. Background information is presented that outlines the integrated planning process which resulted in specific long range goals and objectives being formulated for NASA programs in technology, environment, resources, earth science, communications, space exploration, aeronautics, and an expanded application of space called space industrialization. Program objectives for NASA's Industrialization of Space and studies on potential near term supporting elements (Space Platform, Large Space Structures, Orbital Operations Capabilities Development, Space Manufacturing Module) are discussed.

Theoretical study of hull-rotor aerodynamic interference on semibuoyant vehicles

Theoretical methods are being developed to predict the mutual interference between rotor wakes and the hull for semibuoyant vehicles. The objective of the investigation is to predict the pressure distribution and overall loads on the hull in the presence of rotors whose locations, tilt angles, and disk loading are arbitrarily specified. The methods involve development of potential flow models for the hull alone in a nonuniform onset flow, a rotor wake which has the proper features to predict induced flow outside the wake, and a wake centerline specification technique which accounts for the reactions of the wake to a nonuniform crossflow. The flow models are used in sequence to solve for the mutual influence of the hull and rotor(s) on each other and the resulting loads. A flow separation model is included to estimate the influence of separation on hull loads at high sideslip angles. Only limited results have been obtained to date. These were obtained on a configuration which was tested in the Ames Research Center 7- by 10-Foot Low Speed Tunnel under Goodyear Aircraft Corporation sponsorship and indicate the nature of the interference pressure distribution on a configuration in hover.

Improvements in search and rescue distress alerting and locating using satellites

This paper describes a system concept for search and rescue which is capable of making a major contribution to saving lives and reducing the search time for downed aircraft. In addition, a beacon location experiment is described using the Amateur Radio Satellite Corporation Oscar-6 and Oscar-7 spacecraft. The purpose of this experiment was to demonstrate the system concept above by determining the geographical location of a low power 'distress beacon' via satellite based on a single pass of Doppler frequency measurements. Preliminary results are presented showing beacon location recovery on the order of 10 km with indications that an order of magnitude improvement is entirely possible. This experiment is in support of NASA's current exploration into the role satellites might play in providing much needed improvements in the reliability, coverage and accuracy of present search and rescue procedures.

Laser velocimeter turbulence spectra measurements

A unique laser velocimeter system employing a digital-frequency-counter has been developed by the General Electric Company's Corporate Research and Development under sponsorship of NASA/Langley. This system has been successfully developed for measurements of turbulence spectra in jet exhaust flows. This paper describes the LV spectra data acquisition system and discussions on the important parameters in the spectra analysis procedure. Results from computer simulation and actual jet flow tests are reported. Reasonable agreement was obtained between the experimental measurements and the predictions from error analysis of the LV processor.

Remote beacon location from a single satellite pass

This paper describes the techniques and associated dedicated hardware utilized in locating remote beacons via satellites. Applications include those associated with a 'distress' situation or for monitoring the location of floating data collection platforms. Results obtained from experiments involving the NASA Nimbus-6 and the Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT) OSCAR spacecrafts indicate position accuracies on the order of one and two kilometers are possible. The geographical location of a low power VHF transmitter is determined from Doppler data collected during a single satellite pass. A dedicated microcomputer utilizes an efficient algorithm to provide beacon position coordinates within a minute after the end of the satellite pass.

Single pass Doppler positioning for Search and Rescue satellite missions

This paper describes the implementation of beacon location experiments involving the NASA Nimbus-6 and the Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT) Oscar-6 and Oscar-7 spacecraft. The purpose of these experiments is to demonstrate the feasibility of determining the geographical location of a low power VHF 'distress beacon' via satellite. Doppler data collected during satellite passes is reduced in a mini-computer by means of a simple algorithm resulting in the simultaneous recovery of the unknown receiver coordinates and the unknown Doppler bias frequency. Results indicate point positioning to within a few kilometers - which is within the required accuracies for the positioning of downed aircraft for Search/Rescue missions.

Rocketdyne's advanced coal slurry pumping program

The Rocketdyne Division of Rockwell International Corporation is conducting a program for the engineering, fabrication, and testing of an experimental/prototype high-capacity, high-pressure centrifugal slurry feed pump for coal liquefaction purposes. The abrasion problems in a centrifugal slurry pump are primarily due to the manner in which the hard, solid particles contained in the slurry are transported through the hydraulic flow passages within the pump. The abrasive particles can create scraping, grinding, cutting, and sandblasting effects on the various exposed parts of the pump. These critical areas involving abrasion and impact erosion wear problems in a centrifugal pump are being addressed by Rocketdyne. The mechanisms of abrasion and erosion are being studied through hydrodynamic analysis, materials evaluation, and advanced design concepts.

Shuttle Experimental Radar for Geological Exploration (SERGE); antenna and integration concept definition study

The baseline configuration defined has the SERGE antenna panel array mounted on the OFT-2 pallet sufficiently high in the bay that negligible amounts of radiation from the beam are reflected from orbiter surfaces into the shuttle payload bay. The array is symmetrically mounted to the pallet along the array long dimension with the pallet at the center. It utilizes a graphite epoxy trusswork support structure. The antenna panels are of SEASAT engineering model design and construction. The antenna array has 7 panels and a 7-way naturally tapered coax corporate feed system. The performance of the system is predicted to exceed 33 db gain, have -15 db sidelobes in the E-plane and even lower in the H-plane, and have and E-plane beamwidth less than 2.2 deg, all within performance specification. The primary support structure is predicted to exceed the specified greater than 25 hertz fundamental frequency, although individual panels will have hertz fundamental frequency.

SIMS prototype system 1 test results: Engineering analysis

The space and domestic water solar heating system designated SIMS Prototype Systems 1 was evaluated. The test system used 720 ft (gross) of Solar Energy Products Air Collectors, a Solar Control Corporation SAM 20 Air Handler with Model 75-175 control unit, a Jackson Solar Storage tank with Rho Sigma Mod 106 controller, and 20 tons of rack storage. The test data analysis performed evaluates the system performance and documents the suitability of SIMS Prototype System 1 hardware for field installation.

Preliminary study for a Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation Facility

The state of the art of relevant technologies, of systems and processor architectures, and the measurable computational requirements of the two existing Navier-Stokes solution programs were assessed by Control Data Corporation to determine the best approach for designing a system for aerodynamic simulation. Standard parts and components were used to identify the support processing system, which is composed of commercially available equipment and software. Technological achievements in large scale integration technology and system organization of subcomponents borrowed from the STAR-100C project were used in the design of the Navier-Stokes solver.

Definition study of the Shuttle Imaging Radar-A (SIR-A) antenna on the second space shuttle mission (OFT-2)

A definition is derived for an antenna configuration fixed-mounted high in the payload bay on the hybrid OFT-2 pallet which is compatible with Orbiter interface requirements. Tests showed that the combination of the selected panels and the designed corporate feed meets SIR-A performance requirement of 33 db gain. The effects of Orbiter structure proximity on performance were determined by scale model tests to be negligible. The potential for improved performance during subsequent reflights includes a multiple-beam capability and dual polarization.
