Solar and Battery Storage Permitting and Siting Requirements - Solar Prize Round 7 (CRADA Final Report)

The purpose of this research project was to aggregate zoning and permitting data for utility-scale solar PV and battery energy storage systems. The ultimate goal of this collaboration is to lower solar and battery energy storage system soft costs by streamlining regulatory due diligence and reducing the burden of conducting feasibility assessments for solar and storage systems. The below sections describe the specific research completed by NLR (the contractor) in furtherance of the agreement with Vanox (the participant).

NACA Conference on Helicopters a Compilation of the Papers Presented at Langley Aeronautical Laboratory, Langley Field, Va., May 12 and 13, 1954

This document contains reproductions of technical papers presented at the NACA Conference on Helicopters held at the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory May 12 and 13, 1954. The primary purpose of this conference was to convey to the military services, their contractors, and others concerned with the design of helicopters the results of NACA research on helicopters and to provide those attending an opportunity to discuss the results. The papers in this document are in the same form in which they were presented at the conference in order to facilitate their prompt distribution. The original presentation and this record are considered as complementary to, rather than as substitutes for, the Committee's more complete and formal reports . A list of the conferees is included.

Studies in the Fields of Space Flight and Guidance Theory: Progress Report - No. 2

Compiled in this paper are 11 progress papers from 7 of the agencies working under contract to MSFC in the areas of guidance theory and space flight theory. This is the second paper of the "Progress Reports" and covers the period from December 1, 1961 to June 15, 1962. Extensive references are made to "Progress Report No. 1." This second progress report is referred to as "report" and "Progress Report No. 1" will be referred to as the "first report" in this introduction. Information given in the first report is not repeated herein. The reports of the various contractors will be referred to by index number as papers. There are two parallel series of publications covering the over-all activities at MSFC in the areas of guidance theory and space flight theory. One is the series of progress reports of which this paper is the second in the series. The other is the series of "Status Reports on Theory of Space Flight and Adaptive Guidance." These series along with a few other special reports, give a complete picture of the immediate objectives, accomplishments, and final goals of Aeroballistics Division and associated contr

Biomedical and Human Factors Requirements for a Manned Earth Orbiting Station

This report is the result of a study conducted by Republic Aviation Corporation in conjunction with Spacelabs, Inc.,in a team effort in which Republic Aviation Corporation was prime contractor. In order to determine the realistic engineering design requirements associated with the medical and human factors problems of a manned space station, an interdisciplinary team of personnel from the Research and Space Divisions was organized. This team included engineers, physicians, physiologists, psychologists, and physicists. Recognizing that the value of the study is dependent upon medical judgments as well as more quantifiable factors (such as design parameters) a group of highly qualified medical consultants participated in working sessions to determine which medical measurements are required to meet the objectives of the study. In addition, various Life Sciences personnel from NASA (Headquarters, Langley, MSC) participated in monthly review sessions. The organization, team members, consultants, and some of the part-time contributors are shown in Figure 1. This final report embodies contributions from all of these participants.

Symposium on Technology Status and Trends

The objective of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Technology Utilization Program is to identify, document, and transfer to the national economy the technical advances resulting from our space and research programs. These innovations, when properly applied in industry and business, hold great promise for improving our everyday life and contributing to the prosperity of the nation. We believe that the knowledge, progress, and advances associated with aerospace technology contain major potential for industrial applications. The content and method of presenting symposium papers by Marshall and selected contractor personnel have been designed to transfer an awareness of at least some new technology to attendees in nonaerospace fields.

Prospects for manned Mars missions

Studies called "EMPIRE" (standing for Early Manned Planetary-Interplanetary Roundtrip Expeditions) were initiated early in 1962 by the Future Projects Office for the Marshall Space Flight Center. These and related studies by other NASA centers were intended to bring to light the technical problems associated with such missions. The emphasis of these studies was on single and multiple planetary fty-bys, with some consideration given to planetary orbital and landing missions. The time period considered was the early 1970's. The contractors were Aeronutronic Division (Philco-Ford Motor Company), Lockheed Missiles and Space Company and General Dynamics/Astronautics. Studies relating to the time period 1975-85 were initiated in early 1963, by contracts with General Dynamics/ Fort Worth and Douglas Aircraft Company. Follow-on EMPIRE studies were carried out by Lockheed and General Dynamics/Astronautics. In addition, studies were made of a Mars Excursion Module by Aeronutronic, a Mars Mission Module (MMM) by North American Aviation's Space and Information Division, and an Earth Return Module (ERM) by Lockheed under the direction of the Manned Spacecraft Center. Complementary to these efforts were studies initiated by the Ames Research Center early in 1963 for a Manned Mars Landing and Return Mission. These studies were conducted by North American Aviation and by the TRW Space Technology Laboratories.

A Case History of Titanium Stress Corrosion in Nitrogen Tetroxide

An investigation of the incompatibility of titanium in certain grades of nitrogen tetroxide will be discussed as a case history. The methodology used in its resolution will point out some of the dangers associate with compatibility testing. The methodology also will present some of the difficulties associated with coordinating an investigation involving many contractors and U. S. Government agencies. The techniques employed in this investigation are described in considerable detail for the benefit of investigators with similar problems.
