Silicone containing solid propellant

The addition of a small amount, for example 1% by weight, of a liquid silicone oil to a metal containing solid rocket propellant provides a significant reduction in heat transfer to the inert nozzle walls. Metal oxide slag collection and blockage of the nozzle are eliminated and the burning rate is increased by about 5% to 10% thus improving ballistic performance.

Nonlinear optical processing with Fabry-Perot interferometers containing phase recording media

New techniques in nonlinear optical processing are explored, based on the operation of intensity level selection as performed by a Fabry-Perot interferometer containing a phase object. The image being processed is recorded on a medium between the mirrors as a spatially varying phase shift less than pi. The interferometer only transmits light through those portions of the object that corresponds to a single value of the phase and hence to a single intensity level in the input. More complicated operations such as thresholding and analog-to-digital conversion are performed by modulating the light source as the different levels are selected. Photoresist and lithium niobate have been used as phase objects, and experimental data for both are presented. Three kinds of Fabry-Perot interferometers have been used to demonstrate nonlinear processing using coherent and incoherent light. Color images have been produced with black and white inputs and white light illumination.

On the equilibrium structures of self-gravitating masses of gas containing axisymmetric magnetic fields

The general equations describing the equilibrium shapes of self-gravitating gas clouds containing axisymmetric magnetic fields are presented. The general equations admit of a large class of solutions. It is shown that if one additional (ad hoc) asumption is made that the mass be spherically symmetrically distributed, then the gas pressure and the boundary conditions are sufficiently constraining that the general topological structure of the solution is effectively determined. The further assumption of isothermal conditions for this case demands that all solutions possess force-free axisymmetric magnetic fields. It is also shown how the construction of aspherical (but axisymmetric) configurations can be achieved in some special cases, and it is demonstrated that the detailed form of the possible equilibrium shapes depends upon the arbitrary choice of the functional form of the variation of the gas pressure along the field lines.

Analysis of a unidirectional composite containing broken fibers and matrix damage

An analytical solution is developed for the determination of the stresses and displacements in a unidirectional fiber-reinforced composite containing an arbitrary number of broken fibers as well as longitudinal yielding and splitting of the matrix. The solution is developed using a 'materials-modeling' approach which is based on a shear-lag stress transfer mechanism. The equilibrium equation in the axial direction gives a pair of integral equations which are solved numerically. Excellent agreement is shown to exist between the solution and experimental results for notched unidirectional boron/aluminum laminates without splitting. For brittle matrix composites (i.e., epoxy) equally good results are indicated for both matrix yielding and splitting. For yielding without splitting the fracture strength is found to depend on crack length while for large splitting it is crack length independent.

Structural Modules Would Contain Transmission Lines

New proposal, originally suggested for Spacecraft, is a set of uniformly sized mass-producible modular structural elements that contain electric, fluid, and other transmission lines. Since lines are encapsulated, they are less likely to be damaged. Module shell could be solid metal, sheet metal, honeycomb, fiberglass, plastic, composites, or wood.

Gas Diffusion in Fluids Containing Bubbles

Mathematical model describes movement of gases in fluid containing many bubbles. Model makes it possible to predict growth and shrink age of bubbles as function of time. New model overcomes complexities involved in analysis of varying conditions by making two simplifying assumptions. It treats bubbles as point sources, and it employs approximate expression for gas concentration gradient at liquid/bubble interface. In particular, it is expected to help in developing processes for production of high-quality optical glasses in space.

Stress intensity factors in a hollow cylinder containing a radial crack

An exact formulation of the plane elasticity problem for a hollow cylinder or a disk containing a radial crack is given. The crack may be an external edge crack, an internal edge crack, or an embedded crack. It is assumed that on the crack surfaces the shear traction is zero and the normal traction is an arbitrary function of r. For various crack geometries and radius ratios, the numerical results are obtained for a uniform crack surface pressure, for a uniform pressure acting on the inside wall of the cylinder, and for a rotating disk.

Perfluoroalkyl polytriazines containing pendent iododifluoromethyl groups

New perfluoroalkyl polytriazines containing pendent iododifluoromethyl groups are prepared by the reaction of perfluoroalkyl dinitriles with ammonia to form poly(imidoylamidines), followed by the cyclization of the imidoylamidine groups with, e.g., various mixtures of a perfluoroacyl fluoride with an omega iodoperfluoroacyl fluoride. The polytriazines obtained can be cured by heat which causes crosslinking at the iododifluoromethyl groups by elimination of iodine and formation of carbon-to-carbon bonds.

An integrated exhaust gas analysis system with self-contained data processing and automatic calibration

An integrated gas analysis system designed to operate in automatic, semiautomatic, and manual modes from a remote control panel is described. The system measures the carbon monoxide, oxygen, water vapor, total hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, and oxides of nitrogen. A pull through design provides increased reliability and eliminates the need for manual flow rate adjustment and pressure correction. The system contains two microprocessors to range the analyzers, calibrate the system, process the raw data to units of concentration, and provides information to the facility research computer and to the operator through terminal and the control panels. After initial setup, the system operates for several hours without significant operator attention.

Depressurization and two-phase flow of water containing high levels of dissolved nitrogen gas

Depressurization of water containing various concentrations of dissolved nitrogen gas was studied. In a nonflow depressurization experiment, water with very high nitrogen content was depressurized at rates from 0.09 to 0.50 MPa per second and a metastable behavior which was a strong function of the depressurization rate was observed. Flow experiments were performed in an axisymmetric, converging diverging nozzle, a two dimensional, converging nozzle with glass sidewalls, and a sharp edge orifice. The converging diverging nozzle exhibited choked flow behavior even at nitrogen concentration levels as low as 4 percent of the saturation level. The flow rates were independent of concentration level. Flow in the two dimensional, converging, visual nozzle appeared to have a sufficient pressure drop at the throat to cause nitrogen to come out of solution, but choking occurred further downstream. The orifice flow motion pictures showed considerable oscillation downstream of the orifice and parallel to the flow. Nitrogen bubbles appeared in the flow at back pressures as high as 3.28 MPa, and the level at which bubbles were no longer visible was a function of nitrogen concentration.

Adapting magnetoelectrostatic containment to inert gas thrusters

Two different types of 12 cm magnetoelectrostatic containment (MESC) ion thrusters have been adapted to argon-xenon operation. Discharge chamber optimization produced excellent performance with both the hexagonal and hemispherical shaped thrusters. The hemispherical thruster design yielded the best performance, ionizing 75 to 96 percent of the xenon propellant with a discharge energy consumption rate of 185 to 320 eV/ion. Argon operation of the same thruster achieved 60 to 80 percent propellant ionization at 215 to 370 eV/ion.

On eigensolutions for discontinuous liners in a duct containing uniform mean flow

Sound attenuation in a rectangular acoustically lined duct containing uniform mean flow is analytically investigated using the generalized Wiener-Hopf technique. Uniqueness of the solution is enforced for lined sections of the finite axial extent by imposing edge conditions at the liner interface. Possible edge conditions are considered, including the Kutta condition, and the causal solution corresponding to edge conditions is considered the best choice. Solution methods such as the mode matching and singularity methods imply differing edge conditions, and results show that power attenuation is insensitive to the imposed edge conditions, although significant differences are observed for the reflection coefficient. The amplitude of the exponentially increasing instability mode in the lined section must be set to zero as a first approximation to the nonlinear situation, and results indicate that measurements of the reflection factor can be used to make a more definite decision about physically appropriate edge conditions.

PPQ's Containing Pendent Ethynyl and Phenylethynyl Groups

Polyphenylquinoxalines (PPQ's) containing cross-linking groups have higher use temperature and solvent resistance. As polymers are exposed to elevated temperatures, thermally induced reaction of pendent groups occurs to provide cross-linking, which raises use temperature of polymer and improves solvent resistance.

Development of a simple, self-contained flight test data acquisition system

A low cost flight test data acquisition system, applicable to general aviation airplanes, was developed which meets criteria for doing longitudinal and lateral stability analysis. Th package consists of (1) a microprocessor controller and data acquisition module; (2) a transducer module; and (3) a power supply module. The system is easy to install and occupies space in the cabin or baggage compartment of the airplane. All transducers are contained in these modules except the total pressure tube, static pressure air temperature transducer, and control position transducers. The NASA-developed MMLE program was placed on a microcomputer on which all data reduction is done. The flight testing program undertaken proved both the flight testing hardware and the data reduction method to be applicable to the current field of general aviation airplanes.
