An application of queueing theory to the design of channel requirements for special purpose communications satellites

Special purpose satellites are very cost sensitive to the number of broadcast channels, usually will have Poisson arrivals, fairly low utilization (less than 35%), and a very high availability requirement. To solve the problem of determining the effects of limiting C the number of channels, the Poisson arrival, infinite server queueing model will be modified to describe the many server case. The model is predicated on the reproductive property of the Poisson distribution.

Program on application of communications satellites to educational development: Design of a 12 channel FM microwave receiver

The design, fabrication, and performance of elements of a low cost FM microwave satellite ground station receiver is described. It is capable of accepting 12 contiguous color television equivalent bandwidth channels in the 11.72 to 12.2 GHz band. Each channel is 40 MHz wide and incorporates a 4 MHz guard band. The modulation format is wideband FM and the channels are frequency division multiplexed. Twelve independent CATV compatible baseband outputs are provided. The overall system specifications are first discussed, then consideration is given to the receiver subsystems and the signal branching network.

Analysis of synchronous digital-modulation schemes for satellite communication

The multipath communication channel for space communications is modeled as a multiplicative channel. This paper discusses the effects of multiplicative channel processes on the symbol error rate for quadrature modulation (QM) digital modulation schemes. An expression for the upper bound on the probability of error is derived and numerically evaluated. The results are compared with those obtained for additive channels.

Communication satellite services for special purpose users

The present study identifies potential satellite services, examines the technology necessary for efficient implementation of these services, and determines minimum service cost versus user network size. The generic satellite services evaluated comprise TV and radio distribution (for retransmission), video teleconferencing (interactive), audio/facsimile teleconferencing (interactive), multiplexed data/voice (point-to-point), and satellite-supported land mobile. Satellite costs are based on extrapolations from ongoing commercial satellite programs. Production methods, new technology, and effect of production quantities on present and future production costs are examined to provide information on earth station equipment cost versus the variable 'buy'. Six different launch vehicles from a Delta 2914 to a dedicated Shuttle and three frequency bands and both broadcast (no eclipse capability) and fixed service satellites are considered to assess the effect of satellite size on cost and performance. It is assumed that the user pays only for his prorata share of the space segment costs.

A communications satellite system concept based on the AMPA experiment

This paper describes a system employing sophisticated satellites with steerable high gain, multibeam phased array antennas, which serve small low-cost user terminals. Adaptive techniques are used to form, point, and shape the beams. Pseudonoise signaling achieves user access/distress without requiring dedicated access/emergency channels. The L-band array has 32 elements, 34-dB gain; the user terminal has 15W transmitter, 3-dB gain antenna. The pseudonoise code and message structures are described. Approximately 100 users can be simultaneously acquired with success-probability exceeding 99%; system capacity can be increased by providing additional beams. System implementation is feasible in the Shuttle era.

Effects of electron irradiation on large insulating surfaces used for European Communications Satellites

Samples of aluminized Kapton used for passive thermal control on the VHF shield and the antenna dish of ESA's OTS satellite and its derivatives were subjected to an incident electron beam of 25 keV and irradiated for 8 hours at room temperature and at -173 C under a vacuum of the 10 to the minus 6 th power torr. Visual observations during electron irradiation, measurements of leakage current and discharge characteristics, and material degradation following completion of irradiation are discussed.

A microprocessor based high speed packet switch for satellite communications

The architectures of a single processor, a three processor, and a multiple processor system are described. The hardware circuits, and software routines required for implementing the three and multiple processor designs are presented. A bit-slice microprocessor was designed and microprogrammed. Maximum throughput was calculated for all three designs. Queue theoretic models for these three designs were developed and utilized to obtain analytical expressions for the average waiting times, overall average response times and average queue sizes. From these expressions, graphs were obtained showing the effect on the system performance of a number of design parameters.
