Digital controller design: Continuous and discrete describing function analysis of the IPS system

The digital IPS with wire cable and flex pivot nonlinearity is simulated on the digital computer to determine the effects of varying the sampling period T on the system stability, and to determine a range of optimal values of the parameters of the digital controller. The listing of the computer program is shown as well as the Dahl model for the flex pivot nonlinearity. For the wire cable nonlinearity, two ranges of values were used and the nominal values of the digital controller parameters are included.

A suspended anemometer system for measuring true airspeed on low-speed airplanes

A suspended anemometer system for calibrating pitot-static systems on low speed research airplanes is described. The anemometer measures true airspeed when suspended beneath the airplane on a long cable in regions of undisturbed air. The electrical output of the propeller driven tachometer is a sine wave, the frequency of which is proportional to true airspeed. The anemometer measures true airspeed over a range from 20 to 60 m/sec at altitudes to 3000 m, with an accuracy of + or - 0.5 percent of full scale range. This accuracy is exclusive of errors in the recording system. The stability of the suspended system was investigated and was found adequate in the airspeed range. For the purpose of determining the location of the anemometer relative to the airplane, a method is given for calculating the shape assumed by the deployed cable.

Sail GTS ground system analysis: Avionics system engineering

A comparison of two different concepts for the guidance, navigation and control test set signal ground system is presented. The first is a concept utilizing a ground plate to which crew station, avionics racks, electrical power distribution system, master electrical common connection assembly and marshall mated elements system grounds are connected by 4/0 welding cable. An alternate approach has an aluminum sheet interconnecting the signal ground reference points between the crew station and avionics racks. The comparison analysis quantifies the differences between the two concepts in terms of dc resistance, ac resistance and inductive reactance. These parameters are figures of merit for ground system conductors in that the system with the lowest impedance is the most effective in minimizing noise voltage. Although the welding cable system is probably adequate, the aluminum sheet system provides a higher probability of a successful system design.

Analysis of economics of a TV broadcasting satellite for additional nationwide TV programs

The influence of a TV broadcasting satellite, transmitting four additional TV networks was analyzed. It is assumed that the cost of the satellite systems will be financed by the cable TV system operators. The additional TV programs increase income by attracting additional subscribers. Two economic models were established: (1) each local network is regarded as an independent economic unit with individual fees (cost price model) and (2) all networks are part of one public cable TV company with uniform fees (uniform price model). Assumptions are made for penetration as a function of subscription rates. Main results of the study are: the installation of a TV broadcasting satellite improves the economics of CTV-networks in both models; the overall coverage achievable by the uniform price model is significantly higher than that achievable by the cost price model.

Fiber optic multiplex optical transmission system

A multiplex optical transmission system which minimizes external interference while simultaneously receiving and transmitting video, digital data, and audio signals is described. Signals are received into subgroup mixers for blocking into respective frequency ranges. The outputs of these mixers are in turn fed to a master mixer which produces a composite electrical signal. An optical transmitter connected to the master mixer converts the composite signal into an optical signal and transmits it over a fiber optic cable to an optical receiver which receives the signal and converts it back to a composite electrical signal. A de-multiplexer is coupled to the output of the receiver for separating the composite signal back into composite video, digital data, and audio signals. A programmable optic patch board is interposed in the fiber optic cables for selectively connecting the optical signals to various receivers and transmitters.

In-place recalibration technique applied to a capacitance-type system for measuring rotor blade tip clearance

The rotor blade tip clearance measurement system consists of a capacitance sensing probe with self contained tuning elements, a connecting coaxial cable, and remotely located electronics. Tests show that the accuracy of the system suffers from a strong dependence on probe tip temperature and humidity. A novel inplace recalibration technique was presented which partly overcomes this problem through a simple modification of the electronics that permits a scale factor correction. This technique, when applied to a commercial system significantly reduced errors under varying conditions of humidity and temperature. Equations were also found that characterize the important cable and probe design quantities.

A high-speed computer link for moderate distances and noisy environments

To satisfy the need for a fully duplex high-speed computer data link for the antenna automation project at DSS 13, a very simple and inexpensive scheme was employed. The link requires two coaxial cables over which is sent a unipolar digital frequency modulated signal in which a logical 1 has twice the frequency of a logical 0. Optical isolators and filters reduce ground loop effects and increase noise immunity. Tests conducted in various environments and over different cable lengths at JPL, DSS 14 and DSS 13 have indicated that the link is highly effective.

Group-delay standards

Delay-line standards have been tested by three independent laboratories using six different methods. Results are published in report showing delay values obtained from 15-, 30-, and 60-ns cables by different laboratories. Study of potential error sources indicates that reflection errors due to discontinuities at ends of cables are usually small.

Lightning current waveform measuring system

An apparatus is described for monitoring current waveforms produced by lightning strikes which generate currents in an elongated cable. These currents are converted to voltages and to light waves for being transmitted over an optical cable to a remote location. At the remote location, the waves are reconstructed back into electrical waves for being stored into a memory. The information is stored within the memory with a timing signal so that only different signals need be stored in order to reconstruct the wave form.

Testing EKG electrodes on-line

Simple test instrument allows electrocardiograph operator to check individual electrodes while they are attached to subject. Simply by rotating switch and observing meter, operator verifies that each electrode is not short-circuited or open-circuited and does not present excessive contact resistance at its interface with skin. Instrument also makes it convenient to check electrode cables that are subject to frequent bending and wear, such as cables used on patients who are exercising.

Development of the maypole (hoop/column) deployable reflector concept for large space systems application

A review of the NASA supplied mission scenarios for the communications, radiometry and radio astronomy missions. Led to specific hoop/column antenna configurations for each mission. The mission configurations were then evaluated to identify specific technology items requiring further development. The compilation of these technology drivers resulted in a specification of an artificial or point design, the design element around which all design and performance estimates for the rest of the program were made. Mechanisms for deployment and stowing are examined including the cable driven mast and the latch pulley roller. Methods for determining the thermal expansion of candidate materials, the development of the cables, cords, and hinged joints, and surface adjustment are considered.

Radio frequency performance predictions for the hoop/column point design

Preliminary antenna pattern tests were conducted to determine if catastrophic effects were produced by cables (conducting) in the aperture. This test consisted of an apex feed illuminating a 3 meter solid reflector. A hoop/column configuration was used in positioning the various wires and cables. Radiation patterns were measured at 7 GHz and 10 GHz. No catastrophic effects were observed for this configuration, but additional tests are required to determine the effects for more precision multiple beam applications. In order to better understand the scattering and blockage effects on multiple beam performance, a 35 GHz model was used to model somewhat a single quad aperture configuration. Experimental results using this models are presented in graphs.

SRB dewatering set

The system components and operation of the space shuttle solid rocket booster (SRB) dewatering set are described. The SRB dewatering set consists of a nozzle plug, control console, remote control unit, power distribution unit, umbilical cable, interconnect cables, and various handling and storage items. The nozzle plug (NP) is a remotely controlled, tethered underwater vehicle that is launched from the retrieval vessel (RV) by a crane, descends down the side of the SRB, and is positioned below the SRB nozzle. A TV camera mounted at the top of the NP central core is used by the control console operator to visually guide the NP during descent and docking. The NP is then driven up and locked into the nozzle. Compressed air is passed through the umbilical from the RV, through the NP and into the SRB motor. The water inside the SRB is expelled causing the SRB to rotate to a near horizontal attitude on the surface of the water.
