Buckling and postbuckling behavior of square compression-loaded graphite-epoxy plates with circular cutouts

The postbuckling behavior of square compression-loaded graphite-epoxy plates and isotropic plates with a central circular cutout is studied. The results suggest that the change in the plate's axial stiffness is strongly dependent on cutout size and plate orthotropy. It is found that the cutout size and stacking sequence of a composite plate may be tailored to optimize postbuckling stiffness. Also, it is suggested that a cutout may influence model interaction in a plate. The effects of load-path eccentricity on buckling behavior are examined.

Derivatives of buckling loads and vibration frequencies with respect to stiffness and initial strain parameters

A uniform variational approach to sensitivity analysis of vibration frequencies and bifurcation loads of nonlinear structures is developed. Two methods of calculating the sensitivities of bifurcation buckling loads and vibration frequencies of nonlinear structures, with respect to stiffness and initial strain parameters, are presented. A direct method requires calculation of derivatives of the prebuckling state with respect to these parameters. An adjoint method bypasses the need for these derivatives by using instead the strain field associated with the second-order postbuckling state. An operator notation is used and the derivation is based on the principle of virtual work. The derivative computations are easily implemented in structural analysis programs. This is demonstrated by examples using a general purpose, finite element program and a shell-of-revolution program.

A shear deformable theory of laminated composite shallow shell-type panels and their response analysis. I - Free vibration and buckling

This paper deals with the substantiation of a shear deformable theory of cross-ply laminated composite shallow shells. While the developed theory preserves all the advantages of the first order transverse shear deformation theory it succeeds in eliminating some of its basic shortcomings. The theory is further employed in the analysis of the eigenvibration and static buckling problems of doubly curved shallow panels. In this context, the state space concept is used in conjunction with the Levy method, allowing one to analyze these problems in a unified manner, for a variety of boundary conditions. Numerical results are presented and some pertinent conclusions are formulated.

Buckling analysis and test correlation of hat stiffened panels for hypersonic vehicles

The paper discusses the design, analysis, and test of hat stiffened panels subjected to a variety of thermal and mechanical load conditions. The panels were designed using data from structural optimization computer codes and finite element analysis. Test methods included the grid shadow moire method and a single gage force stiffness method. The agreement between the test data and analysis provides confidence in the methods that are currently being used to design structures for hypersonic vehicles. The agreement also indicates that post buckled strength may potentially be used to reduce the vehicle weight.

Stress, vibration, and buckling of multilayered cylinders

An efficient computational method for lowering the cost of the free vibration, stress, and buckling analyses of multilayered composite cylinders is presented. The analytical methodology is based on the linear three-dimensional theory of elasticity where the cylinders are assumed to have simply supported curved edges, and the fibers of the different layers are either in the circumferential or in the longitudinal direction. The full equations of the finite element model are solved for a single pair of Fourier harmonics, and the response that corresponds to the other Fourier harmonics is generated utilizing a reduced system with considerably fewer degrees of freedom.

Buckling of stiffened shells with random initial imperfections, thickness and boundary conditions

The paper proposes a method to predict the buckling load of stiffened, composite shells reliably, where besides the randomness of the initial geometric imperfections also a random variation of the wall thickness and the uncertainty of the precise edge conditions is included in the analysis. The introduction of the variability in the thickness from shell to shell, in an ensemble of nominally identical shells, produced by the same manufacturing procedure is motivated by the growing realization of the importance of thickness variations by composite shells. The probabilistic treatment of the boundary conditions is dictated by the fact that 'true', deterministically specified boundary conditions are unlikely to be realizable in practice.

Buckling behavior of long symmetrically laminated plates subjected to compression, shear, and inplane bending loads

A parametric study of the buckling behavior of infinitely long symmetrically laminated anisotropic plates subjected to combined loadings are presented. The loading conditions considered are pure inplane bending, transverse tension and compression, and shear. Results obtained using a special purpose analysis are presented for clamped and simply supported plates. An important finding of the study is that the effects of anisotropy are much more pronounced in shear-loaded plates than in axial compression-loaded plates and plates loaded by pure inplane bending.

Inclusion of transverse shear deformation in exact buckling and vibration analysis of composite plate assemblies

The problem considered is the development of the necessary plate stiffnesses for use in a general purpose program for buckling and vibration of composite plate assemblies. The required stiffnesses are for the assumption of sinusoidal response along the plate length with transverse shear included. The method is based on the exact solution of the plate differential equations for a composite laminate having fully populated A, B, and D matrices which leads to a differential equation of tenth order.

Optimal locations of redundants for prestressing adaptive trusses with buckling considerations

This paper describes the optimal locations selection of redundant bars for prestressing a determinate truss. Two computationally simple algorithms are presented to obtain the optimal locations of the redundants. The paper then describes a procedure to prevent local buckling/rupture of individual bars of the resulting indeterminate truss and its global buckling, by introducing a positive scale parameter for the prestressing forces. The procedure is illustrated on a simple two-dimensional truss.

Experimental study of plate buckling induced by spatial temperature gradients

An experimental study of plate buckling induced by spatial temperature gradients is described. A rectangular Hastelloy-X panel is subjected to local line heating by a focused quartz heat lamp. Two parallel panel edges are maintained at constant temperature by coolant flow. Point supports provide well-defined thermal-structural boundary conditions. Test results from transient elastic and inelastic tests demonstrate that substantial panel bending occurs due to initial panel warpage and thermally induced membrane compressive stresses.

SCBUCKLE user's manual: Buckling analysis program for simple supported and clamped panels

The program SCBUCKLE calculates the buckling loads and mode shapes of cylindrically curved, rectangular panels. The panel is assumed to have no imperfections. SCBUCKLE is capable of analyzing specially orthotropic symmetric panels (i.e., A(sub 16) = A(sub 26) = 0.0, D(sub 16) = D(sub 26) = 0.0, B(sub ij) = 0.0). The analysis includes first-order transverse shear theory and is capable of modeling sandwich panels. The analysis supports two types of boundary conditions: either simply supported or clamped on all four edges. The panel can be subjected to linearly varying normal loads N(sub x) and N(sub y) in addition to a constant shear load N(sub xy). The applied loads can be divided into two parts: a preload component; and a variable (eigenvalue-dependent) component. The analysis is based on the modified Donnell's equations for shallow shells. The governing equations are solved by Galerkin's method.

Inclusion of transverse shear deformation in the exact buckling and vibration analysis of composite plate assemblies

The problem considered is the development of the necessary plate stiffnesses for use in the general purpose program VICONOPT for buckling and vibration of composite plate assemblies. The required stiffnesses include the effects of transverse shear deformation and are for sinusoidal response along the plate length as required in VICONOPT. The method is based on the exact solution of the plate differential equations for a composite laminate having fully populated A, B, and D stiffness matrices which leads to an ordinary differential equation of tenth order.

On solving the irregularly-shaped plate buckling problem

This paper develops methods for finding critical buckling loads of isotropic plates. In particular, this paper is motivated by the lack of tabular data for non-rectangular plates such as general trapezoids. High order displacement functions are used, and boundary conditions are imposed by utilizing the Lagrange multiplier method, which allows for a variety of constraint conditions. The element is derived with the use of minimum potential energy and subparametric mappings. An example is given, and several test cases are presented to show the validity of the approach in the one element case.

Influence of local fiber undulations on the global buckling behavior of filament-wound cylinders

The predicted compressive stiffness and buckling strength of filament-wound cylinders using classical lamination theory is significantly higher than those observed experimentally. This discrepancy is partially influenced by the variation of mechanical properties in the region of fiber undulations. These regions are localized geometric defects intrinsic to the filament-winding, weaving, and braiding processes. In the present work, the average mechanical properties of the fiber undulation region are quantified using modified models of woven-fabric composites to account for the 3-dimensional effects. The mechanical properties thus determined can be incorporated as local element properties into global finite-element models. Preliminary results from large-displacement analyses of filament-wound cylinders are relatively more accurate when fiber undulations are accounted for.

Elastic Buckling Under Combined Stresses of Flat Plates with Integral Waffle-like Stiffening

Theory and experiment were compared and found in good agreement for the elastic buckling under combined stresses of long flat plates with integral waffle-like stiffening in a variety of configurations. For such flat plates, 45 degree waffle stiffening was found to be the most effective of the configurations for the proportions considered over the widest range of combinations of compression and shear.

Analysis of behavior of simply supported flat plates compressed beyond the buckling load into the plastic range

An analysis is presented of the postbuckling behavior of a simply supported square flat plate with straight edges compressed beyond the buckling load into the plastic range. The method of analysis involves the application of a variational principle of the deformation theory of plasticity in conjunction with computations carried out on a high-speed calculating machine. Numerical results are obtained for several plate proportions and for one material. The results indicate plate strengths greater than those that have been found experimentally on plates that do not satisfy straight-edge conditions. (author)
