Building a testable shear viscosity across the QCD phase diagram

Current experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are probing finite baryon densities where the shear viscosity to enthalpy ratio ηT/w of the Quark Gluon Plasma remains unknown. Here we use the Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG) model with the most up-to-date hadron list to calculate ηT/w at low temperatures and at finite baryon densities ρ B . We then match ηT/w to a QCD-based shear viscosity calculation within the deconfined phase to create a table across {T,μ B } for different cross-over and critical point scenarios at a specified location. We find that these new ηT/w(T,μ B ) values would require initial conditions at significantly larger ρB, compared to ideal hydrodynamic trajectories, in order to reach the same freeze-out point.

Monte Carlo event generator for initial conditions of conserved charges in nuclear geometry

At top collider energies where baryon stopping is negligible, the initial state of heavy-ion collisions is overall charge neutral and predominantly composed of gluons. Nevertheless, there can also be significant local fluctuations of the baryon number, strangeness, and electric charge densities about zero, perturbatively corresponding to the production of quark/antiquark pairs. These previously ignored local charge fluctuations can permit the study of charge diffusion in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), even at top collider energies. In this paper we present a new model denoted ICCING (initial conserved charges in nuclear geometry) which can reconstruct the initial conditions of conserved charges in the QGP by sampling a (g→q¯q) splitting probability over the initial energy density. We find that the new charge distributions generally differ from the bulk energy density; in particular, the strangeness distribution is significantly more eccentric than standard bulk observables and appears to be associated with the geometry of hot spots in the initial state. The new information provided by these conserved charges opens the door to studying a wealth of new charge- and flavor-dependent correlations in the initial state and ultimately the charge transport parameters of the QGP.

Characterization of the inner edge of the neutron star crust

The poorly known crustal equation of state plays a critical role in many observational phenomena associated with a neutron star. Here using semiclassical Monte Carlo simulations, we explore the possible configurations of the inner edge of the neutron star crust for a variety of baryon densities and proton fractions. Applying the Kirkwood-Buff theory to these two-component systems, we observe how the isothermal compressibility reaches a maximum when isolated nonsymmetric (or quasispherical) clusters are formed in an extremely dilute neutron gas. To determine the neutron fraction, we suggest a geometrical model based on the behavior of the proton-neutron pair correlation function. Accordingly, the equation of state of the inner crust is calculated, illustrating that the nuclear energy in β equilibrium follows a power-law behavior with baryon density. As a possible astrophysical outcome of this study, our results could help refine the mass-radius relation. Finally, our results pave the way towards further investigations of the impact of the proton-neutron pair correlation function on transport properties within the neutron star crust.

Probing the high-density nuclear symmetry energy with the Ξ – / Ξ 0 ratio in heavy-ion collisions at s N N ≈ 3 GeV

Recent beam energy scan experiments at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider by the STAR Collaboration found that hadronic interactions dominate the collective flow and the proton cumulant ratios are driven by baryon number conservation in a region of high baryon density in √ s NN = 3 GeV Au + Au reactions, indicating that the dense medium formed in such collisions is likely hadronic matter. Within an updated a relativistic transport model with momentum dependent isoscalar and isovector single-nucleon mean-field potentials corresponding to different symmetry energies at suprasaturation densities, the n/p, π – /π + , $K$ $^{0}_{s}$/K + , Σ – /Σ + , and Ξ – /Ξ 0 ratios are studied for central Au + Au collisions at √ s NN = 3 GeV, where the maximum central density reaches about (3.6–4.0) ρ 0 . The doubly strange Ξ – /Ξ 0 ratio is found to have the strongest sensitivity to the variation of high-density nuclear symmetry energy. Furthermore, the Ξ – /Ξ 0 ratio in relativistic heavy-ion reactions at √ s NN~3 GeV may help probe sensitively the poorly known symmetry energy of dense neutron-rich matter critically important for understanding various properties of neutron stars.

Minimal entanglement and emergent symmetries in low-energy QCD

Here, we study low-energy scattering of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ baryons from the perspective of quantum information science, focusing on the correlation between entanglement minimization and the appearance of accidental symmetries. The baryon transforms as an octet under the SU⁡(3) flavor symmetry and its interactions below the pion threshold are described by contact operators in an effective field theory (EFT) of QCD. Despite there being 64 channels in the 2-to-2 scattering, only six independent operators in the EFT are predicted by SU⁡(3). We show that successive entanglement minimization in SU⁡(3)-symmetric channels are correlated with increasingly large emergent symmetries in the EFT. In particular, we identify scattering channels whose entanglement suppression are indicative of emergent SU⁡(6), SO⁡(8), SU⁡(8), and SU⁡(16) symmetries. We also observe the appearance of non-relativistic conformal invariance in channels with unnaturally large scattering lengths. Improved precision from lattice simulations could help determine the degree of entanglement suppression, and consequently the amount of accidental symmetry, in low-energy QCD.

Sensitivity of Au + Au collisions to the symmetric nuclear matter equation of state at 2–5 nuclear saturation densities

We demonstrate that proton and pion flow measurements in heavy-ion collisions at incident energies ranging from 1 to 20 GeV per nucleon in the fixed target frame can be used for an accurate determination of the symmetric nuclear matter equation of state at baryon densities equal 2–4 times nuclear saturation density n 0 . We simulate Au + Au collisions at these energies using a hadronic transport model with an adjustable vector mean-field potential dependent on baryon density n B . Here, we show that the mean field can be parametrized to reproduce a given density dependence of the speed of sound at zero temperature $c$$^{2}_{s}$ (n B , T = 0), which we vary independently in multiple density intervals to probe the differential sensitivity of heavy-ion observables to the equation of state at these specific densities. Recent flow data from the STAR experiment at the center-of-mass energies √ s NN = {3.0, 4.5} GeV can be described by our model, and a Bayesian analysis of these data indicates a hard equation of state at n B ϵ (2, 3)n 0 and a possible phase transition at n B ϵ (3, 4)n 0 . More data at √ s NN = 2–5 GeV, as well as a more thorough analysis of the model systematic uncertainties will be necessary for a more precise conclusion.

Using SPT polarization, Planck 2015, and non-CMB data to constrain tilted spatially-flat and untilted nonflat ΛCDM, XCDM, and ΦCDM dark energy inflation cosmologies

We use six tilted spatially-flat and untilted non-flat dark energy cosmological models in analyses of South Pole Telescope polarization (SPTpol) cosmic microwave background (CMB) data, alone and in combination with Planck 2015 CMB data and non-CMB data, namely, the Pantheon Type Ia supernovae apparent magnitudes, a collection of baryon acoustic oscillation data points, Hubble parameter measurements, and growth rates. Although the cosmological models that best-fit the Planck CMB and non-CMB data do not provide good fits to the SPTpol data, with the χ2's exceeding the expected value, given the uncertainties, in each model the cosmological parameter constraints from the SPTpol data and from the Planck CMB and non-CMB data are largely mutually consistent. Furthermore, when the smaller angular scale SPTpol data are used jointly with either the Planck data alone or with the Planck CMB and the non-CMB data to constrain untilted non-flat models, spatially-closed models remain favored over their corresponding flat limits. When used in conjunction with Planck data, non-CMB data (baryon acoustic oscillation measurements in particular, from six experiments) have significantly more constraining power than the SPTpol data.

Analysis of the multicomponent relativistic Boltzmann equation for electron scattering in big bang nucleosynthesis

Big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) is valuable as a means to constrain the physics of the early universe and it is the only probe of the radiation-dominated epoch. A fundamental assumption in BBN is that the nuclear velocity distributions obey Maxwell-Boltzmann (MB) statistics as they do in stars. Specifically, the BBN epoch is characterized by a dilute baryon plasma for which the velocity distribution of nuclei is mainly determined by the dominant Coulomb elastic scattering with mildly relativistic electrons. One must therefore deduce the momentum distribution for reacting nuclei from the multicomponent relativistic Boltzmann equation. However, the full multicomponent relativistic Boltzmann equation has only recently been analyzed and its solution has only been worked out in special cases. Moreover, a variety of schemes have been proposed that introduce nonthermal components into the BBN environment which can alter the thermal distribution of reacting nuclei. Here, we construct the relativistic Boltzmann equation in the context of BBN. We also derive a Langevin model and perform relativistic Monte-Carlo simulations which clarify the baryon distribution during BBN and can be used to analyze any relaxation from a nonthermal injection. Further, we show by these analyses that the thermalization process leads to a nuclear distribution function that remains very close to MB statistics even during the most relativistic environment relevant to BBN. Hence, the predictions of standard BBN remain unchanged.

Hubble constant difference between CMB lensing and BAO measurements

We apply a tension metric QUDM, the update difference in mean parameters, to understand the source of the difference in the measured Hubble constant H0 inferred with cosmic microwave background lensing measurements from the Planck satellite (H 0 = $67.9$ $^{+1.1}_{–1.3}$ km/s/Mpc) and from the South Pole Telescope (H 0 = $72.0$ $^{+2.1}_{–2.5}$ km/s/Mpc) when both are combined with baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements with priors on the baryon density (BBN). Q UDM isolates the relevant parameter directions for tension or concordance where the two data sets are both informative, and aids in the identification of subsets of data that source the observed tension. With Q UDM , we uncover that the difference in H 0 is driven by the tension between Planck lensing and BAO+BBN, at probability-to-exceed of 6.6%. Most of this mild tension comes from the galaxy BAO measurements parallel to the line of sight in the redshift range 0.2 < z < 0.75. Here, the redshift dependence of the parallel BAOs pulls both the matter density Ω m and H 0 high in Λ CDM, but these parameter anomalies are usually hidden when the BAO measurements are combined with other cosmological data sets with much stronger Ω m constraints.

Nucleon mass with highly improved staggered quarks

We present the first computation in a program of lattice-QCD baryon physics using staggered fermions for sea and valence quarks. For this initial study, we present a calculation of the nucleon mass, obtaining 964 ±16 MeV with all sources of statistical and systematic errors controlled and accounted for. This result is the most precise determination to date of the nucleon mass from first principles. We use the highly improved staggered quark action, which is computationally efficient. Three gluon ensembles are employed, which have approximate lattice spacings 𝑎 ≈ 0.09, 0.12, and 0.15 fm, each with equal-mass 𝑢/𝑑, 𝑠, and 𝑐 quarks in the sea. Further, all ensembles have the light valence and sea 𝑢/𝑑 quarks tuned to reproduce the physical pion mass, avoiding complications from chiral extrapolations. Our work opens a new avenue for precise calculations of baryon properties, which are both feasible and relevant to experiments in particle and nuclear physics.

Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Modeling the gas thermodynamics in BOSS CMASS galaxies from kinematic and thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich measurements

The thermal and kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects (tSZ, kSZ) probe the thermodynamic properties of the circumgalactic and intracluster medium (CGM and ICM) of galaxies, groups, and clusters, since they are proportional, respectively, to the integrated electron pressure and momentum along the line-of-sight. We present constraints on the gas thermodynamics of CMASS galaxies in the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) using new measurements of the kSZ and tSZ signals obtained in a companion paper. Combining kSZ and tSZ measurements, we measure within our model the amplitude of energy injection $\epsilon M_\star c^2$, where $M_\star$ is the stellar mass, to be $\epsilon=(40\pm9)\times10^{-6}$, and the amplitude of the non-thermal pressure profile to be $\alpha_{\rm Nth}<0.2$ (2$\sigma$), indicating that less than 20% of the total pressure within the virial radius is due to a non-thermal component. We estimate the effects of including baryons in the modeling of weak-lensing galaxy cross-correlation measurements using the best fit density profile from the kSZ measurement. Our estimate reduces the difference between the original theoretical model and the weak-lensing galaxy cross-correlation measurements in arXiv:1611.08606 by half, but does not fully reconcile it. Comparing the kSZ and tSZ measurements to cosmological simulations, we find that they under predict the CGM pressure and to a lesser extent the CGM density at larger radii. This suggests that the energy injected via feedback models in the simulations that we compared against does not sufficiently heat the gas at these radii. We do not find significant disagreement at smaller radii. These measurements provide novel tests of current and future simulations. Here, this work demonstrates the power of joint, high signal-to-noise kSZ and tSZ observations, upon which future cross-correlation studies will improve.

Constraints on Λ CDM extensions from the SPT-3G 2018 $EE$ and $TE$ power spectra

Here, we present constraints on extensions to the Λ CDM cosmological model from measurements of the E-mode polarization autopower spectrum and the temperature-E-mode cross-power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) made using 2018 SPT-3G data. The extensions considered vary the primordial helium abundance, the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom, the sum of neutrino masses, the relativistic energy density and mass of a sterile neutrino, and the mean spatial curvature. We do not find clear evidence for any of these extensions, from either the SPT-3G 2018 dataset alone or in combination with baryon acoustic oscillation and Planck data. None of these model extensions significantly relax the tension between Hubble-constant, H 0 , constraints from the CMB and from distance-ladder measurements using Cepheids and supernovae. The addition of the SPT-3G 2018 data to Planck reduces the square-root of the determinants of the parameter covariance matrices by factors of 1.3–2.0 across these models, signaling a substantial reduction in the allowed parameter volume. We also explore CMB-based constraints on H 0 from combined SPT, Planck, and ACT DR4 datasets. While individual experiments see some indications of different H 0 values between the TT, TE, and EE spectra, the combined H 0 constraints are consistent between the three spectra. For the full combined datasets, we report H 0 = 67.49 ± 0.53 km s -1 Mpc -1 , which is the tightest constraint on H0 from CMB power spectra to date and in 4.1σ tension with the most precise distance-ladder-based measurement of H 0 . The SPT-3G survey is planned to continue through at least 2023, with existing maps of combined 2019 and 2020 data already having ~ 3.5 x lower noise than the maps used in this analysis.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Cosmology from cosmic shear and robustness to data calibration

This work, together with its companion paper, Secco, Samuroff et al., presents the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 cosmic shear measurements and cosmological constraints based on an analysis of over 100 million source galaxies. With the data spanning 4143 deg 2 on the sky, divided into four redshift bins, we produce the highest significance measurement of cosmic shear to date, with a signal-to-noise of 40. We conduct a blind analysis in the context of the ΛCDM model and find a 3% constraint of the clustering amplitude, S 8 ≡ σ 8 (Ω m /0.3) 0.5 = 0.759$^{+0.025}_{-0.023}$. A ΛCDM-Optimized analysis, which safely includes smaller scale information, yields a 2% precision measurement of S 8 = 0.772$^{+0.018}_{-0.017}$ that is consistent with the fiducial case. The two low-redshift measurements are statistically consistent with the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background result, however, both recovered S 8 values are lower than the high-redshift prediction by 2.3σ and 2.1σ (ρ-values of 0.02 and 0.05), respectively. The measurements are shown to be internally consistent across redshift bins, angular scales and correlation functions. The analysis is demonstrated to be robust to calibration systematics, with the S 8 posterior consistent when varying the choice of redshift calibration sample, the modeling of redshift uncertainty and methodology. Similarly, we find that the corrections included to account for the blending of galaxies shifts our best-fit S 8 by 0.5σ without incurring a substantial increase in uncertainty. We examine the limiting factors for the precision of the cosmological constraints and find observational systematics to be subdominant to the modeling of astrophysics. Specifically, we identify the uncertainties in modeling baryonic effects and intrinsic alignments as the limiting systematics.

Exotic compact objects: The dark white dwarf

Several dark matter models allow for the intriguing possibility of exotic compact object formation. These objects might have unique characteristics that set them apart from their baryonic counterparts. Furthermore, gravitational wave observations of their mergers may provide the only direct window on a potentially entirely hidden sector. Here, we discuss dark white dwarfs, starting with an overview of the microphysical model and analytic scaling relations of macroscopic properties derived from the nonrelativistic limit. We use the full relativistic formalism to confirm these scaling relations and demonstrate that dark white dwarfs, if they exist, would have masses and tidal deformabilities that are very different from those of baryonic compact objects. Further, and most importantly, we demonstrate that dark white dwarf mergers would be detectable by current or planned gravitational observatories across several orders of magnitude in the particle-mass parameter space. Lastly, we find universal relations analogous to the compactness-Love and binary Love relations in neutron star literature. Using these results, we show that gravitational wave observations would constrain the properties of the dark matter particles constituting these objects.

Robust neural network-enhanced estimation of local primordial non-Gaussianity

When applied to the nonlinear matter distribution of the universe, neural networks have been shown to be very statistically sensitive probes of cosmological parameters, such as the linear perturbation amplitude σ 8 . However, when used as a “black box,” neural networks are not robust to baryonic uncertainty. We propose a robust architecture for constraining primordial non-Gaussianity f NL , by training a neural network to locally estimate σ 8 , and correlating these local estimates with the large-scale density field. We apply our method to N-body simulations, and show that σ⁡(f NL ) is 3.5 times better than the constraint obtained from a standard halo-based approach. Finally, we show that our method has the same robustness property as large-scale halo bias: baryonic physics can change the normalization of the estimated f NL , but cannot change whether f NL is detected.

Measurement of gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background using SPT-3G 2018 data

We present a measurement of gravitational lensing over 1500 deg 2 of the Southern sky using SPT-3G temperature data at 95 GHz and 150 GHz taken in 2018. The lensing amplitude relative to a fiducial Planck 2018 Lambda cold dark matter ( Λ CDM ) cosmology is found to be 1.020 ± 0.060 , excluding instrumental and astrophysical systematic uncertainties. We conduct extensive systematic and null tests to check the robustness of the lensing measurements, and report a minimum-variance combined lensing power spectrum over angular multipoles of 50 < L < 2000 , which we use to constrain cosmological models. When analyzed alone and jointly with primary cosmic microwave background (CMB) spectra within the Λ CDM model, our lensing amplitude measurements are consistent with measurements from SPT-SZ, SPTpol, ACT, and Planck. Incorporating loose priors on the baryon density and other parameters including uncertainties on a foreground bias template, we obtain a 1 σ constraint on σ 8 Ω m 0.25 = 0.595 ± 0.026 using the SPT-3G 2018 lensing data alone, where σ 8 is a common measure of the amplitude of structure today and Ω m is the matter density parameter. Combining SPT-3G 2018 lensing measurements with baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data, we derive parameter constraints of σ 8 = 0.810 ± 0.033 , S 8 ≡ σ 8 ( Ω m / 0.3 ) 0.5 = 0.836 ± 0.039 , and Hubble constant H 0 = 68.8 - 1.6 + 1.3 km s - 1 Mpc - 1 . Our preferred S 8 value is higher by 1.6 to 1.8 σ compared to cosmic shear measurements from DES-Y3, HSC-Y3, and KiDS-1000 at lower redshift and smaller scales. We combine our lensing data with CMB anisotropy measurements from both SPT-3G and Planck to constrain extensions of Λ CDM . Using CMB anisotropy and lensing measurements from SPT-3G only, we provide independent constraints on the spatial curvature of Ω K = 0.01 4 - 0.026 + 0.023 (95% C.L.) and the dark energy density of Ω Λ = 0.72 2 - 0.026 + 0.031 (68% C.L.). When combining SPT-3G lensing data with SPT-3G CMB anisotropy and BAO data, we find an upper limit on the sum of the neutrino masses of ∑ m ν < 0.30 eV (95% C.L.). Due to the different combination of angular scales and sky area, this lensing analysis provides an independent check on lensing measurements by ACT and Planck.

Novel transition dynamics of topological solitons

Continuous phase transitions can be classified into ones characterized by local-order parameters and others that need additional topological constraints. The critical dynamics near the former transitions have been extensively studied, but the latter is less understood. We fill this gap in knowledge by studying the transition dynamics to a parity-breaking topological ground state called the chiral soliton lattice in quantum chromodynamics at finite temperature, baryon chemical potential, and an external magnetic field. We find a slowing down of the soliton’s translational motion as the critical magnetic field approaches, while the local relaxation rate to the solitonic state remains finite. The time required to converge to the stationary state strongly depends on the symmetry of the initial configuration, determining whether translational motion occurs during the dynamic process. Lattice QCD study of π Σ − K ¯ N scattering and the Λ ( 1405 ) resonance

A lattice QCD computation of the coupled channel π Σ – K ¯ N scattering amplitudes in the Λ ( 1405 ) region is detailed. Results are obtained using a single ensemble of gauge field configurations with N f = 2 + 1 dynamical quark flavors and m π ≈ 200 MeV and m K ≈ 487 MeV . Hermitian correlation matrices using both single baryon and meson-baryon interpolating operators for a variety of different total momenta and irreducible representations are used. Several parametrizations of the two-channel scattering K -matrix are utilized to obtain the scattering amplitudes from the finite-volume spectrum. The amplitudes, continued to the complex energy plane, exhibit a virtual bound state below the π Σ threshold and a resonance pole just below the K ¯ N threshold.
