Bond-dependent anisotropy and magnon decay in cobalt-based Kitaev triangular antiferromagnet
Following tremendous success of the graphene-derived fundamental and applied research, the magnetic van der Waals materials that can be cleaved into monolayer two-dimensional atomic crystals have emerged as a new platform in the studies of low-dimensional physics and in the design of artificial heterostructures with novel properties. Because of that, the family of dihalides and trihalides of the 3d transition group receive a strong renewed interest. Together with our experimental collaborators, we have investigated the novel dynamical properties of one of such promising material CoI 2 , and demonstrated that spin excitations in it are prone to substantial breakdown and complex level repulsion, the important quantum effects whose theoretical understanding has been significantly advanced by our group in the last two decades. Both phenomena are dramatically revealed by experiments and verified by the theory in our joint study, published in Nature Physics. Altogether, our results pave the way toward a new research direction for the magnetic van der Waals materials.
Proximate spin liquid and fractionalization in the triangular antiferromagnet KYbSe 2
The Heisenberg triangular-lattice quantum spin liquid and its phase transitions to nearby magnetic orders have received much theoretical attention, but clear experimental manifestations of these states are rare. Here we demonstrate that a spin-half delafossite material, namely, KYbSe 2 , shows close proximity to the triangular-lattice Heisenberg quantum spin liquid. Using neutron scattering, we identify a diffuse continuum with a sharp lower bound within the measured spectra. Applying entanglement witnesses to the data indicates multipartite entanglement spread between its neighbours, and an analysis of its magnetic-exchange couplings reveals close proximity to the theoretical quantum spin-liquid phase. The key features of the data are reproduced by Schwinger boson theory and tensor network calculations with a substantial next-nearest-neighbour coupling. The strength of the dynamical structure factor at the Brillouin-zone K point shows a scaling collapse down to 0.3 K, indicating the existence of a second-order quantum phase transition. Finally, comparing this with previous theoretical work suggests that the proximate phase at a larger next-nearest-neighbour coupling is a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ spin liquid, resolving a long-debated issue. Diffusion doping of cobalt in rod-shape anatase TiO 2 nanocrystals leads to antiferromagnetism
Cobalt( ii ) ions were adsorbed to the surface of rod-shape anatase TiO 2 nanocrystals and subsequently heated to promote ion diffusion into the nanocrystal.
Chromophore-radical excited state antiferromagnetic exchange controls the sign of photoinduced ground state spin polarization
A change in the sign of the ground state electron spin polarization (ESP) is reported in complexes where an organic radical (nitronylnitroxide, NN) is covalently attached to a donor–acceptor chromophore via two different meta -phenylene bridges.
Controllable synthesis of environmentally stable vdW antiferromagnetic oxyhalide CrOCl
This work demonstrates APCVD synthesis of stable 2D CrOCl, a magnetic oxyhalide for spintronics and quantum devices. It reveals controllable gas-phase growth, with characterization confirming high-quality CrOCl free from Cr 2 O 3 and oxidation.
Electron quantum interference in epitaxial antiferromagnetic NiO thin films
The electron reflectivity from NiO thin films grown on Ag(001) has been systematically studied as a function of film thickness and electron energy. A strong electron quantum interference effect was observed from the NiO film, which is used to derive the unoccupied band dispersion above the Fermi surface along the Γ-X direction using the phase accumulation model. The experimental bands agree well with first-principles calculations. A weaker electron quantum interference effect was also observed from the CoO film.
From antiferromagnetic and hidden order to Pauli paramagnetism in U M 2 Si 2 compounds with 5 f electron duality
Using inelastic X-ray scattering beyond the dipole limit and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we establish the dual nature of the U 5 f electrons in U M 2 Si 2 ( M = Pd, Ni, Ru, Fe), regardless of their degree of delocalization. We have observed that the compounds have in common a local atomic-like state that is well described by the U 5 f 2 configuration with the $Γ^{(1)}_1$ and $Γ_2$ quasi-doublet symmetry. The amount of the U 5 f 3 configuration, however, varies considerably across the U M 2 Si 2 series, indicating an increase of U 5 f itineracy in going from M = Pd to Ni to Ru and to the Fe compound. The identified electronic states explain the formation of the very large ordered magnetic moments in UPd 2 Si 2 and UNi 2 Si 2 , the availability of orbital degrees of freedom needed for the hidden order in URu 2 Si 2 to occur, as well as the appearance of Pauli paramagnetism in UFe 2 Si 2 . A unified and systematic picture of the U M 2 Si 2 compounds may now be drawn, thereby providing suggestions for additional experiments to induce hidden order and/or superconductivity in U compounds with the tetragonal body-centered ThCr 2 Si 2 structure.
