Pressure cells for in situ neutron total scattering: time and real-space resolution during deuterium absorption

In situ gas-loading sample holders for two-dimensionally arranged detectors in time-of-flight neutron total scattering experiments have been developed to investigate atomic arrangements during deuterium absorption using time and real-space resolution. A single-crystal sapphire container was developed that allows conditions of 473 K and 10 MPa hydrogen gas pressure. High-resolution transient measurements detected deuterium absorption by palladium that proceeded within a few seconds. A double-layered container with thick- and thin-walled vanadium allowed conditions of 423 K and 10 MPa hydrogen gas pressure. The deuterium occupation sites of a lanthanum–nickel–aluminium alloy are discussed in detail on the basis of real-space high-resolution data obtained from in situ neutron scattering measurements and reverse Monte Carlo structural modeling.

Rigid registration algorithm based on the minimization of the total variation of the difference map

Image registration is broadly used in various scenarios in which similar scenes in different images are to be aligned. However, image registration becomes challenging when the contrasts and backgrounds in the images are vastly different. This work proposes using the total variation of the difference map between two images (TVDM) as a dissimilarity metric in rigid registration. A method based on TVDM minimization is implemented for image rigid registration. The method is tested with both synthesized and real experimental data that have various noise and background conditions. The performance of the proposed method is compared with the results of other rigid registration methods. It is demonstrated that the proposed method is highly accurate and robust and outperforms other methods in all of the tests. The new algorithm provides a robust option for image registrations that are critical to many nano-scale X-ray imaging and microscopy applications.

On single-crystal total scattering data reduction and correction protocols for analysis in direct space

Data reduction and correction steps and processed data reproducibility in the emerging single-crystal total-scattering-based technique of three-dimensional differential atomic pair distribution function (3D-ΔPDF) analysis are explored. All steps from sample measurement to data processing are outlined using a crystal of CuIr 2 S 4 as an example, studied in a setup equipped with a high-energy X-ray beam and a flat-panel area detector. Computational overhead as pertains to data sampling and the associated data-processing steps is also discussed. Various aspects of the final 3D-ΔPDF reproducibility are explicitly tested by varying the data-processing order and included steps, and by carrying out a crystal-to-crystal data comparison. Situations in which the 3D-ΔPDF is robust are identified, and caution against a few particular cases which can lead to inconsistent 3D-ΔPDFs is noted. Although not all the approaches applied herein will be valid across all systems, and a more in-depth analysis of some of the effects of the data-processing steps may still needed, the methods collected herein represent the start of a more systematic discussion about data processing and corrections in this field.

Lorentz factor for time-of-flight neutron Bragg and total scattering

We report the three fundamental origins of the Lorentz factor for neutron time-of-flight powder diffraction are revisited. A detailed derivation of the Lorentz factor is presented in the context of diffuse scattering modelling in reciprocal space when perfect periodicity is assumed, and the total scattering pattern is constructed in its discrete form – the factor in this case becomes 1/Q 2 (or d 2 ). Discussion is also presented with respect to practical data reduction where a vanadium measurement is usually taken as the normalization factor (to account for various factors such as detector efficiency), and it is shown that the existence of the Lorentz factor is independent of such a normalization process.

Closed-Form Approximation of the Total Variation Proximal Operator

Total variation (TV) is a widely used function for regularizing imaging inverse problems that is particularly appropriate for images whose underlying structure is piecewise constant. TV regularized optimization problems are typically solved using proximal methods, but the way in which they are applied is constrained by the absence of a closed-form expression for the proximal operator of the TV function. A closed-form approximation of the TV proximal operator has previously been proposed, but its accuracy was not theoretically explored in detail. Here, we address this gap by making several new theoretical contributions, proving that the approximation leads to a proximal operator of some convex function, it is equivalent to a gradient descent step on a smoothed version of TV, and that its error can be fully characterized and controlled with its scaling parameter. We experimentally validate our theoretical results on image denoising and sparse-view computed tomography (CT) image reconstruction.

New Total-Ionizing-Dose Resistant Data Storing Technique for NAND Flash Memory

This paper describes a new non-charge-based data storing technique in NAND flash memory called watermark that encodes read-only data in the form of physical properties of flash memory cells. Unlike traditional charge-based data storing method in flash memory, the proposed technique is resistant to total ionizing dose (TID) effects. To evaluate its resistance to irradiation effects, we analyze data stored in several commercial single-level-cell (SLC) flash memory chips from different vendors and technology nodes. These chips are irradiated using a Co-60 gamma-ray source array for up to 100 krad(Si) at Sandia National Laboratories. Experimental evaluation performed on a flash chip from Samsung shows that the intrinsic bit error rate (BER) of watermark increases from 0.8% for TID = 0 krad(Si) to 1% for TID = 100 krad(Si). Conversely, the BER of charge-based data stored on the same chip increases from 0% at TID = 0 krad(Si) to 1.5% at TID = 100 krad(Si). Overall, the results imply that the proposed technique may potentially offer significant improvements in data integrity relative to traditional charge-based data storage for very high radiation (TID > 100 krad(Si)) environments. These gains in data integrity relative to the charge-based data storage are useful in radiation-prone environments, but they come at the cost of increased write times and higher BERs before irradiation.

Total-Ionizing-Dose Effects on Read Noise of MLC 3-D NAND Memories T

This paper analyzes the total ionizing dose (TID) effects on noise characteristics of commercial multi-level-cell (MLC) 3-D NAND memory technology during the read operation. Additionally, the chips were exposed to a Co-60 gamma-ray source for up to 100 krad(Si) of TID. We find that the number of noisy cells in the irradiated chip increases with TID. Bit-flip noise was more dominant for cells in an erased state during irradiation compared to programmed cells.

Domain Decomposition for Integer Optimal Control with Total Variation Regularization

Total variation integer optimal control problems admit solutions and necessary optimality conditions via geometric variational analysis. In spite of the existence of said solutions, algorithms which solve the discretized objective suffer from high numerical cost associated with the combinatorial nature of integer programming. Hence, such methods are often limited to small and medium-sized problems. We propose a globally convergent, coordinate descent–inspired algorithm that allows tractable subproblem solutions restricted to a partition of the domain. Our decomposition method solves relatively small trust-region subproblems that modify the control variable on a subdomain only. Given nontrivial subdomain overlap, we prove that a global first-order necessary optimality condition is equivalent to a first-order necessary optimality condition per subdomain. We additionally show that a sufficient decrease is achieved on a single subdomain by way of a trust-region subproblem solver using geometric measure–theoretic arguments, which we integrate with a greedy patch selection to prove convergence of our algorithm. In conclusion, we demonstrate the practicality of our algorithm on a benchmark large-scale, PDE-constrained integer optimal control problem and find that our method is faster than the state of the art.

Total kinetic energy and mass yields from the fast neutron-induced fission of $^{239}\hbox {Pu}$

The total kinetic energy (TKE) release in fission is an important observable, constituting over 80% of the energy released in fission (E f ≈ 200MeV). While the TKE release in the 239 Pu(n,f) reaction was previously measured up to 50 MeV incident neutron energy (E n ), there were features in TKE release at the highest values of E n that were puzzling. There was a marked flattening of TKE release from E n = 30 to 50 MeV, in disagreement with the clearly decreasing TKE observed from E n = 0.5 to 30 MeV. To verify and clarify this trend, TKE measurements at higher values of E n were made. We present absolute measurements of TKE release in 239 Pu(n,f) from E n = 2.4 to 100 MeV. Here, we used silicon PIN detectors to measure the fragment energies and deduce mass-yield curves using the 2E-method. We also discuss fission asymmetry and the relationships between approx. fission fragment mass and distortion.

Spatial and Temporal Analysis of the Total Cost of Ownership for Class 8 Tractors and Class 4 Parcel Delivery Trucks

The medium- and heavy-duty transportation sector is experiencing rapid changes in powertrain technology innovation, with recent announcements of battery electric and fuel cell electric trucks being offered. The economics of these alternative powertrain vehicles are uncertain and difficult to compare directly. This analysis seeks to provide a rigorous, techno-economic analysis of all of these alternative powertrain vehicles within the same analytic framework. Specifically, this report evaluates the total cost of ownership (TCO) of six different truck powertrain technologies (diesel, diesel hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid electric, compressed natural gas, battery electric, and fuel cell electric) for three different truck vocations (Class 8 long haul [750-mile range and 500-mile range], Class 8 short haul [300-mile range], and Class 4 parcel delivery [120-mile range]), for three different time frames (2018, 2025, and Ultimate).

Effect of total parenteral nutrition, systemic sepsis, and glutamine on gut mucosa in rats

The effect of the combination of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and systemic sepsis on mucosal morphology and protein synthesis was investigated. Rats were given a standard TPN mixture consisting of glucose (216 kcal.kg-1.day-1), lipid (24 kcal.kg-1.day-1), and amino acids (1.5 g N.kg-1.day-1) for 5 days. On the 5th day the rats (n = 37) were randomized into four groups according to diet as follows: 1) control nonseptic on standard TPN, 2) control nonseptic on TPN with glutamine, 3) septic on standard TPN, and 4) septic with the TPN supplemented with glutamine. Twenty hours after the injection of Escherichia coli, the rats were given a 4-h constant infusion of [U-14C]leucine to determine the mucosal fractional protein synthesis rates. The following results were obtained. 1) Histological examination showed that systemic sepsis caused tissue damage to the ileum and jejunum. 2) Glutamine supplementation attenuated these changes. 3) There were no visible changes to the colon either from glutamine supplementation or sepsis. 4) Sepsis was associated with an increase in mucosal protein synthesis and decreased muscle synthesis. 5) Addition of glutamine to the TPN mix further increased protein synthesis in the intestinal mucosa of septic rats.

Using the Global GPS Network and Other Satellite Data to Monitor Ionospheric Total Electron Content

A globally distributed network of dual-frequency global positioning system (GPS) receivers is the primary source of data used to measure ionospheric total electron content (TEC) on global scales. Maps of TEC useful for calibrating propagation delays, or monitoring the solar-terrestrial environment, can be produced using this continuously operating network. The maps can also form the basis of a TEC calibration service for users around the world. Potential users may include single-frequency satellite altimetry missions, satellite tracking stations, and astronomical observatories.
