Using NASA Remotely Sensed Data to Help Characterize Environmental Risk Factors for National Public Health Applications

The overall goal of this study is to address issues of environmental health and enhance public health decision making by using NASA remotely sensed data and products. This study is a collaboration between NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Universities Space Research Association (USRA), the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Office of Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Services. The objectives of this study are to develop high-quality spatial data sets of environmental variables, link these with public health data from a national cohort study, and deliver the environmental data sets and associated public health analyses to local, state and federal end ]user groups. Three daily environmental data sets were developed for the conterminous U.S. on different spatial resolutions for the period 2003-2008: (1) spatial surfaces of estimated fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on a 10-km grid using US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ground observations and NASA's MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data; (2) a 1-km grid of MODIS Land Surface Temperature (LST); and (3) a 12-km grid of daily incoming solar radiation and maximum and minimum air temperature using the North American Land Data Assimilation System (NLDAS) data. These environmental datasets were linked with public health data from the UAB REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) national cohort study to determine whether exposures to these environmental risk factors are related to cognitive decline, stroke and other health outcomes. These environmental national datasets will also be made available to public health professionals, researchers and the general public via the CDC Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER) system, where they can be aggregated to the county-level, state-level, or regional-level as per users f need and downloaded in tabular, graphical, and map formats. This provides a significant addition to the CDC WONDER online system, allowing public health researchers and policy makers to better include environmental exposure data in the context of other health data available in CDC WONDER. It also substantially expands public access to NASA data, making their use by a wide range of decisionmakers feasible.

The equation of state and shock-driven decomposition of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)

We present new equations of state (EOS) for polymethylmethacrylate and its shock-driven decomposition products, generated in both tabular form and as linear U S – u p fits to all previously available shock data. Different approaches are taken for materials shocked above and below the apparent threshold for chemical reactions at pressures P ≈ 30 GPa. Both EOSs are calibrated to and compared with a broad array of experimental results, as well as new ab initio molecular dynamics simulations presented here. Comparisons are good in most cases, and we focus our particular attention on those observables that test the distinction between reactants and products.

Equilibrium concentrations of N2H4 and its decomposition products at elevated temperatures and pressures

Liquid hydrazine is considered as a convenient source of hydrogen rather than just as a rocket fuel. For such purposes, the hydrogen is usually obtained by passing the hydrazine through a heated catalytic bed. One convenient measure of the effectiveness of a catalytic decomposition device as a whole is to compare the quantity of hydrogen produced with the equilibrium concentration of the gaseous species N2H4, NH3, N3, and H2 which would exist at the temperature and pressure found in various parts of the device. Calculations of the concentrations were carried out and are reported here. Following presentation of the results in both tabular and graphical forms is a comparison between the computed equilibrium concentrations and available experimental data.

Simulink-Based Simulation Architecture for Evaluating Controls for Aerospace Vehicles (SAREC-ASV)

The Simulation Architecture for Evaluating Controls for Aerospace Vehicles (SAREC-ASV) is a Simulink-based approach to providing an engineering quality desktop simulation capability for finding trim solutions, extracting linear models for vehicle analysis and control law development, and generating open-loop and closed-loop time history responses for control system evaluation. It represents a useful level of maturity rather than a finished product. The layout is hierarchical and supports concurrent component development and validation, with support from the Concurrent Versions System (CVS) software management tool. Real Time Workshop (RTW) is used to generate pre-compiled code for substantial component modules, and templates permit switching seamlessly between original Simulink and code compiled for various platforms. Two previous limitations are addressed. Turn around time for incorporating tabular model components was improved through auto-generation of required Simulink diagrams based on data received in XML format. The layout was modified to exploit a Simulink "compile once, evaluate multiple times" capability for zero elapsed time for use in trimming and linearizing. Trim is achieved through a Graphical User Interface (GUI) with a narrow, script definable interface to the vehicle model which facilitates incorporating new models.

The human role in space (THURIS) applications study. Final briefing

The THURIS (The Human Role in Space) application is an iterative process involving successive assessments of man/machine mixes in terms of performance, cost and technology to arrive at an optimum man/machine mode for the mission application. The process begins with user inputs which define the mission in terms of an event sequence and performance time requirements. The desired initial operational capability date is also an input requirement. THURIS terms and definitions (e.g., generic activities) are applied to the input data converting it into a form which can be analyzed using the THURIS cost model outputs. The cost model produces tabular and graphical outputs for determining the relative cost-effectiveness of a given man/machine mode and generic activity. A technology database is provided to enable assessment of support equipment availability for selected man/machine modes. If technology gaps exist for an application, the database contains information supportive of further investigation into the relevant technologies. The present study concentrated on testing and enhancing the THURIS cost model and subordinate data files and developing a technology database which interfaces directly with the user via technology readiness displays. This effort has resulted in a more powerful, easy-to-use applications system for optimization of man/machine roles. Volume 1 is an executive summary.

Determining the electrical conductivity of metals using the 2 MA Thor pulsed power driver

We present the development of a pulsed power experimental technique to infer the electrical conductivity of metals from ambient to high energy density conditions. The method is implemented on Thor, a moderate scale (1–2 MA) pulsed power driver. The electrical conductivity of copper at elevated temperature (>4000 K) and pressure (>10 GPa) is determined, and a new tabular material model is developed, guided by density functional theory, which preserves agreement with existing experimental data. Minor modifications (<10%) are found to be necessary to the previous Lee–More–Desjarlais model isotherms in the vicinity of the melt transition in order to account for observed discrepancies with the new experimental data. An analytical model for magnetic direct drive flyer acceleration and Joule heating induced vaporization based on the Tsiolkovsky “rocket equation” is presented to assess sensitivity of the method to minor changes in electrical conductivity.

Multiphase tin equation of state using density functional theory

In this work, we perform density functional theory (DFT) calculations of five solid phases and the liquid phase of tin. The calculations include cold curves of the five solid phases, phonon calculations in the quasiharmonic approximation over a range of volumes for each solid phase, and DFT-based molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) simulations of the liquid phase, including those of the melt curve using the Z method. Using the DFT results, we construct a tabular multiphase sesame equation of state for tin, referred to as sesame 2162. Comparisons to experimental data are made and show a high level of agreement in isobaric data, isothermal data, shock data, and phase boundary measurements, including measurements of the melt curve. The 2162 EOS will be useful for hydrodynamics simulations and has been designed with an eye toward hydrodynamics simulations that incorporate materials strength models and allow for modeling of the kinetics of phase transitions.

QCSEE under-the-wing engine-wing-flap aerodynamic profile characteristics

As part of a broad-based NASA program to provide a technology base for future propulsion requirements for powered-lift aircraft, the Quiet, Clean, Short-Haul, Experimental Engine (QCSEE) program was begun by the Lewis Research Center in 1974. The initial buildup of the under-the-wing (UTW) engine was tested by the contractor at his test site. The UTW engine was delivered to Lewis in 1978 for further testing with wing and flap segments simulating an installation on a short-haul transport aircraft. The engine was also tested alone as an aid in identifying the various noise sources and their levels. As part of these tests the aerodynamic profiles at the exhaust nozzle and on the surfaces and in the wake of the wing-flap system were measured. This report documents, in plots and tabular form, the significant results from those tests. The results are presented as tabulations of aerodynamic data for all of the test points and as profiles of pressure, temperature, velocity, and normalized velocity and pressure for selected conditions. One of the main conclusions was that the measured flap surface temperatures were surprisingly low for both approach and takeoff flap settings.

Ohio's statewide land use inventory: An operational approach for applying LANDSAT data to state, regional and local planning programs

The programmatic, technical, user application, and cost factors associated with the development of an operational, statewide land use inventory from LANDSAT data are described. The LANDSAT multispectral data are subjected to geometrical and categorical processing to produce map files for each of the 200 fifteen (15) minute quads covering Ohio. Computer compatible tapes are rescanned to produce inventory tapes which identify eight (8) Level I land use categories and a variety of Level II categories. The inventory tapes are processed through a series of ten (10) software programs developed by the State of Ohio. The net result is a computerized inventory which can be displayed in map or tabular form for various geographic units, at a variety of scales and for selected categories of usage. The computerized inventory data files are applied to technical programs developed by the various state agencies to be used in state, regional, and local planning programs.

NASA Historical Data Book: NASA Space Applications, Aeronautics and Space Research and Technology, Tracking and Data Acquisition/Support Operations, Commercial Programs and - Volume 6

This sixth volume of the NASA Historical Data Book is a continuation of those earlier efforts. This fundamental reference tool presents information, much of it statistical, documenting the development of several critical areas of NASA responsibility for the period between 1979 and 1988. This volume includes detailed information on the space applications effort, the development and operation of aeronautics and space research and technology programs, tracking and data acquisition/space operations, commercial programs, facilities and installations, personnel, and finances and procurement during this era. Special thanks are owed to the student research assistants who gathered and input much of the tabular material-a particularly tedious undertaking. There are numerous people at NASA associated with historical study, technical information, and the mechanics of publishing who helped in myriad ways in the preparation of this historical data book.

Equation-of-state, sound speed, and reshock of shock-compressed fluid carbon dioxide

Mechanical equation-of-state data of initially liquid and solid CO2 shock-compressed to terapascal conditions are reported. Diamond-sapphire anvil cells were used to vary the initial density and state of CO2 samples that were then further compressed with laser-driven shock waves, resulting in a data set from which precise derivative quantities, including Grüneisen parameter and sound speed, are determined. Reshock states are measured to 800 GPa and map the same pressure-density conditions as the single shock using different thermodynamic paths. The compressibility data reported here do not support current density-functional-theory calculations, but are better represented by tabular equation-of-state models.

Straight and chopped DC performance data for a General Electric 5BY436A1 DC shunt motor with a General Electric EV-1 controller

Both straight and chopped dc motor performance data for a General Electric 5BY436A1 motor with a General Electric EV-1 controller is presented in tabular and graphical formats. Effects of motor temperature and operating voltage are also shown. The maximum motor efficiency is approximately 85% at low operating temperatures in the straight dc mode. Chopper efficiency can be assumed to be 95% under all operating conditions. For equal speeds, the motor operated in the chopped mode develops slightly more torque and draws more current than it does in the straight mode.

Interplanetary proton (Ep = 0.61-3.41 MeV) events observed with Pioneer 11, 1973-1986 and out to 22.4 AU

A survey of interplanetary proton (Ep = 0.61-3.41 MeV) events is summarized in graphical and tabular form for the period April 1973 - December 1986. The observations were obtained by an effectively continuous data stream from the University of Iowa instrument on the NASA Ames spacecraft Pioneer 11 as it moved outward in the solar system from 1.0 to 22.4 AU. A total of 265 distinct events are identified. The spectra and intensities of the protons, presumed to be originally of solar origin, are influenced dramatically by propagative and accelerative processes in the interplanetary medium.
