Theory Manual for the Fuel Cycle Analysis Code REBUS

REBUS is a system of programs designed for the fuel cycle analysis of fast reactors and accelerator-driven systems. The first version of REBUS was developed in 1970 for calculating the equilibrium operating conditions of liquid metal fast breeder reactors. During the past five decades, various extensions and refinements have been made in the simulation of material motions in fuel cycle facilities and the solution of the neutronics and isotopic transmutation equations that govern the reactor behavior. The latest version complies with the standard code practices and interface dataset specifications of the committee on computer code coordination (CCCC). This report provides a detailed description of the physical processes and their mathematical models and solution methods of the current production version of REBUS. The models of the facilities and physical processes involved in fast reactor fuel cycle are first discussed. Then the mathematical formulation of these physical models is presented, followed by detailed discussions of solution methods of the resulting set of equations. Finally the output edit quantities are discussed along with their definitions.

Cathode to Target Simulations for Scorpius: I. Simulation Codes and Models

The new Scorpius linear induction electron accelerator is under development for multi-pulse flash radiography of large, explosively-driven hydrodynamic experiments. Beam physics from the cathode to the target was examined with computer simulations, including envelope, ray-trace, and particle-in cell (PIC) codes. Beam instabilities investigated included beam breakup (BBU), image displacement, diocotron, parametric envelope, ion hose, and the resistive wall instability. Beam corkscrew motion and emittance growth from beam mismatch were also studied. The results of these simulations is documented in a series of reports. In this report the computer codes and physical models used for these simulations are described. The conclusion of this study is that Scorpius will produce and accelerate a beam with radiographic quality equivalent to the present accelerators at Los Alamos National Laboratory if the same engineering standards and construction details are upheld.

A User’s Guide to the PLTEMP/ANL Code (V.4.3)

PLTEMP/ANL V4.3 is a program that obtains a steady-state flow and temperature solution for a nuclear reactor core, or for a single fuel assembly. It is based on an evolutionary sequence of codes originally used for plate temperatures, hence “PLTEMP”, developed at Argonne National Laboratory over several decades. Fueled and non-fueled regions are modeled. Each fuel assembly consists of one or more plates or tubes separated by coolant channels. The fuel plates may have one to five layers of different materials, each with heat generation. The width of a fuel plate may be divided into multiple longitudinal stripes, each with its own axial power shape. Depending upon the heat transfer method selected, the temperature solution is effectively 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional (Appendix XV). It should be noted that for a 3-dimensional solution the axial power shape is modeled without accounting for axial heat conduction. It begins with a solution across all coolant channels and fuel plates or tubes within a given fuel assembly, at the entrance to the assembly. The temperature solution is repeated for each axial node along the length of the fuel assembly. The geometry may be either slab or radial, corresponding to fuel assemblies made of a series of flat (or slightly curved) plates, or of nested tubes. A variety of thermal-hydraulic correlations are available to determine safety margins such as onset-of-nucleate boiling ratio(ONBR), departure from nucleate boiling ratio (DNBR), and onset of flow instability ratio (OFIR). Coolant properties for either light or heavy water are obtained from FORTRAN functions rather than from tables. The code is intended for thermal-hydraulic analysis of research reactor performance in the sub-cooled boiling regime. Both turbulent and laminar flow regimes can be modeled. Options to calculate both forced flow and natural circulation are available. A general search capability is available (Appendix XII) to greatly reduce the reactor analyst’s time.

Monte Carlo Hauser-Feshbach computer code system to model nuclear reactions: YAHFC

A computer program framework, YAHFC, to model low-energy nuclear reactions is presented. The framework allows for reactions with incident particles ranging from protons/neutrons to alphas and is designed to address reactions that ultimately lead to the formation of compound nuclear systems that then decay statistically as outlined in concepts of Hauser and Feshbach. Additionally, instead of a reaction, it is also possible to model the decay of a nuclear system with an initial excitation and population. The code models nuclear decays with a Monte Carlo process that tracks the decay of each state. This allows for an exact representation of the spectra for all emitted particles in each of the final exit channels and the possibility of generating reaction data for simulation purposes. The program is interfaced with the optical model code system FRESCOX to calculate transmission coefficients as well as the effects of coupled channels and other direct excitations via the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA). Modules are included to account for nuclear processes such as width corrections, pre-equilibrium emission, and fission. The program is controlled by a series of input commands and while a set of input parameters exists for each projectile and target, the input commands allow for complete control over each input parameter. Extensive data files are produced and a program is provided that converts YAHFC data files into nuclear data library entries in the generalized nuclear data structure (GNDS).

Implementation of Additional Models into the MACCS Code for Nearfield Consequence Analysis

The NRC’s Non-Light Water Reactor Vision and Strategy report discusses the MACCS code readiness for nearfield analyses. To increase the nearfield capabilities of MACCS, the plume meander model from Ramsdell and Fosmire was integrated into MACCS and the MACCS plume meander model based on U.S. NRC Regulatory Guide 1.145 was updated. Test cases were determined to verify the plume meander model implementation into MACCS 4.1. The results using the implemented MACCS plume meander models match the comparisons with other codes and analytical calculations. This verifies that the additional MACCS plume meander models have been successfully implemented into MACCS 4.1. This report documents the verification of these model implementations into MACCS and a comparison of the results using

Understanding Power and Energy Utilization in Large Scale Production Physics Simulation Codes

Power is an often-cited reason for moving to advanced architectures on the path to Exascale computing. This is due to the practical concern of delivering enough power to successfully site and operate these machines, as well as concerns over energy usage while running large simulations. Since accurate power measurements can be difficult to obtain, processor thermal design power (TDP) is a possible surrogate due to its simplicity and availability. However, TDP is not indicative of typical power usage while running simulations. Using commodity and advance technology systems at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Sandia National Laboratory, we performed a series of experiments to measure power and energy usage in running simulation codes. These experiments indicate that large scale LLNL simulation codes are significantly more efficient than a simple processor TDP model might suggest.

Implementation of an Orificing Optimization Algorithm in the DASSH Subchannel Analysis Code

The Ducted Assembly Steady-State Heat transfer code (DASSH) performs full-core subchannel thermal hydraulics calculations in liquid metal fast reactors. One of the applications of subchannel codes is to optimize coolant flow orificing. As a design activity, the primary task is to determine the best way to divide assemblies into groups and distribute coolant flow rates among them. This report documents an algorithm implemented in DASSH to automatically optimize coolant orificing. Over the course of multiple iterations, DASSH determines the orifice grouping and flow distribution that minimizes peak coolant, clad, or fuel temperatures across all timesteps for a user-specified number of assembly groups. The total coolant flow rate in the reactor is constrained to achieve the specified core-average outlet temperature. The flow rate to each orifice group may also be constrained by the allowable pressure drop. The distribution of coolant flow among groups is accelerated using a predictor-corrector algorithm based on interpolated results from single-assembly parametric calculations. The assembly orificing grouping is initially predicted based on assembly power but can be refined if results demonstrate that an assembly would fit better in another group. The algorithm is demonstrated with two case studies. The first is a simple model for a reactor core consisting of just fuel assemblies; the pin power distributions are specified to create a situation where the initial assembly grouping prediction is suboptimal. This example is used to describe the initial grouping, demonstrate convergence over multiple iterations, and highlight the impact of regrouping. Then, the algorithm is applied to minimize peak clad and fuel temperatures in an example sodium-cooled fast reactor, the Versatile Test Reactor. The multicycle optimization confirms prior calculations for the reference core design. The example highlights how optimizing for different peak temperatures affects the results and demonstrates the use of the pressure drop constraint to limit the maximum flow rate.
