Revealing uncommon transport in the previously unascertained very low cation clathrate-I Eu 2 Ga 11 Sn 35

In this study, high occupancy of cation sites is typical for clathrate-I compositions allowing limited tunability of the electrical properties beyond doping and elemental substitution. Herein, we report on the structure and electrical transport of single-crystal Eu 2 Ga 11 Sn 35 , the sole example of a very low (25%) cation concentration clathrate-I material with atypical transport directly attributable to the structure and stoichiometry.

Structural and thermal properties of ultralow thermal conductivity Ba 3 Cu 2 Sn 3 Se 10

The thermal properties of Ba 3 Cu 2 Sn 3 Se 10 were investigated by measurement of the thermal conductivity and heat capacity. The chemical bonding in this diamagnetic material was investigated using structural data from Rietveld refinement and calculated electron localization. This quaternary chalcogenide is monoclinic (P2 1 /c), has a large unit cell with 72 atoms in the primitive cell, and a high local coordination environment. Additionally, the Debye temperature (162 K) and average speed of sound (1666 m s -1 ) are relatively low with a very small electronic contribution to the heat capacity. Ultralow thermal conductivity (0.46 W m -1 K -1 at room temperature) is attributed to the relatively weak chemical bonding and intrinsic anharmonicity, in addition to a large unit cell. This work is part of the continuing effort to explore quaternary chalcogenides with intrinsically low thermal conductivity and identify the features that result in a low thermal conductivity.

ZTF SN Ia DR2 follow-up: Exploring the origin of the Type Ia supernova host galaxy step through Si II velocities

The relation between Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and the stellar masses of their host galaxy is well documented. In particular, Hubble residuals display a distinct luminosity shift based on host mass. This is known as the mass step. This effect is widely used as an additional correction factor in the standardisation of SN Ia luminosities. We investigate the Hubble residuals and the mass step of normal SNe Ia in the context of Si IIλ6355 velocities based on 277 normal SNe Ia that are near their peak in the second data release (DR2) of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). We divided the sample into high-velocity (HV) and normal-velocity (NV) SNe Ia, separated at 12,000 km s −1 . This produced a sample of 70 HV and 207 NV objects. We then explored potential environment- and/or progenitor-related effects by investigating the Si IIλ6355 velocities with parameters such as the light-curve stretch x 1 , the colour c, and the host galaxy properties. Although we only find a marginal difference between the Hubble residuals of HV and NV SNe Ia, the NV mass step is 0.149 ± 0.024 mag (6.3σ). The HV mass step is smaller, 0.046 ± 0.041 mag (1.1σ), and is consistent with zero. The difference between the NV and HV mass steps is modest, at ∼2.2σ. Moreover, the clearest subtype difference appears for SNe in central regions (d DLR < 1), where NV SNe Ia show a large mass step, whereas HV SNe Ia are consistent with no step, yielding a difference of 3.1–3.6σ between NV and HV SNe Ia. We observe a host-colour step for both subtypes. NV SNe Ia show a step of 0.142 ± 0.024 mag (5.9σ), while HV SNe Ia show a step of 0.158 ± 0.042 mag (3.8σ), where the HV SNe Ia step appears to be larger, but the significance is lower because the sample size is smaller. Overall, the NV and HV colour steps are statistically consistent. HV SNe Ia also show modest (∼2.5–3σ) steps in certain subsets, such as those in outer regions (d DLR > 1), whereas NV SNe display stronger environmental trends. Our results indicate that NV SNe Ia appear to be more environmentally sensitive, particularly in central likely metal-rich and older regions, while HV SNe Ia show weaker and subset-dependent trends. This suggests that applying a universal mass-step correction might introduce biases, and that incorporating refined classifications and/or environment-dependent factors, such as the location within the host, might improve future cosmological analyses beyond the standard x 1 and c cuts.

Insights from multinucleon transfer reactions in 206 Pb+ 118 Sn

Multinucleon transfer reactions for the 206 Pb + 118 Sn system were measured at E lab = 1200 MeV using the PRISMA large solid-angle magnetic spectrometer. The experiment was conducted at laboratory angles around the grazing angle, covering an angular range of approximately 20°. The resulting differential and total cross sections, along with Q-value distributions for various neutron and proton pick-up and stripping channels, are presented. The Q-value distributions suggest a transition from quasi-elastic to deep inelastic collision processes, particularly in channels involving nucleon transfers. The experimental results have been compared with GRAZING code calculations, showing good agreement for few-nucleon transfer channels, while channels with large nucleon transfers are underestimated, indicating the involvement of more complex processes.

Structural and thermal properties of Eu 2 Ga 11 Sn 35

Clathrates have been reported to form in a variety of different structure types; however, inorganic clathrate-I materials with a low-cation concentration have yet to be investigated. Furthermore, tin-based compositions have been much less investigated as compared to silicon or germanium analogs. We report the temperature-dependent structural and thermal properties of single-crystal Eu 2 Ga 11 Sn 35 revealing the effect of structure and composition on the thermal properties of this low-cation clathrate-I material. Specifically, low-temperature heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and synchrotron single-crystal x-ray diffraction reveal a departure from Debye-like behavior, a glass-like phonon mean-free path for this crystalline material, and a relatively large Grüneisen parameter due to the dominance of low-frequency Einstein modes. In conclusion, our analyses indicate thermal properties that are a direct result of the structure and composition of this clathrate-I material.

Large ordered moment with strong easy-plane anisotropy and vortex-domain pattern in the kagome ferromagnet Fe 3 Sn

We report the magnetic anisotropy of kagome bilayer ferromagnet Fe 3 Sn probed by the bulk magnetometry and magnetic force microscopy (MFM) on high-quality single crystals. The dependence of magnetization on the orientation of the external magnetic field reveals strong easyplane magnetocrystalline anisotropy and anisotropy of the saturation magnetization. The leading magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant shows a monotonous increase from $\mathrm{K_1$≈ –1.0 \times 10^6 J/m^3}$ at 300 K to $\mathrm{–1.3 \times 10^6 J/m^3}$ at 2 K. Our ab initio electronic structure calculations yield the value of total magnetic moment of 7.1$μ_Β$/$f.u.$ and a magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy density of –0.57 $\mathrm{meV/}$$f.u.$ $\mathrm{(–1.62 \times 10^6J/m^3)}$ both being in reasonable agreement with the experimental values. The MFM imaging reveals micrometer-scale magnetic vortices with weakly pinned cores that vanish at the saturation field of ~3T applied perpendicular to the kagome plane. The observed vortex-domain structure is well reproduced by the micromagnetic simulations, using the experimentally determined value of the anisotropy and exchange stiffness.

Shock compression experiments using the DiPOLE 100-X laser on the high energy density instrument at the European x-ray free electron laser: Quantitative structural analysis of liquid Sn

X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) sources coupled to high-power laser systems offer an avenue to study the structural dynamics of materials at extreme pressures and temperatures. The recent commissioning of the DiPOLE 100-X laser on the high energy density (HED) instrument at the European XFEL represents the state-of-the-art in combining x-ray diffraction with laser compression, allowing for compressed materials to be probed in unprecedented detail. Here, we report quantitative structural measurements of molten Sn compressed to 85(5) GPa and ~3500 K. The capabilities of the HED instrument enable liquid density measurements with an uncertainty of ~1% at conditions which are extremely challenging to reach via static compression methods. We discuss best practices for conducting liquid diffraction dynamic compression experiments and the necessary intensity corrections which allow for accurate quantitative analysis. We also provide a polyimide ablation pressure vs input laser energy for the DiPOLE 100-X drive laser which will serve future users of the HED instrument.

Magnetic tunability in tetragonal Mn–Rh–Ir–Sn inverse Heusler compounds

Abstract Gaining control over magnetic structure has been an ongoing challenge in materials that form complex, nanoscale, and non-collinear magnetic configurations. Recently, it was predicted that tuning the ratio of the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction to the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in tetragonal inverse Heuslers through changes in composition could allow a range of interesting magnetic states to be accessed, from simple ferrimagnetism, to helical and antiskyrmionic phases. Here, we show tunability of the magnetic phase behavior in the Mn–Rh–Sn system through Ir substitution on the Rh substructure. Iridium substitution correlates to an increase in the strength of ferromagnetic exchange couplings, at the expense of antiferromagnetic exchange couplings. However, we do not observe the complex non-collinear magnetic phases proposed previously, likely due to the extremely narrow composition window where these phases are predicted to form in a bulk sample. This work highlights the sensitivity of complex magnetic structures to stoichiometry, which makes them difficult to discover empirically.

Microwave measurements of the high magnetic field vortex motion pinning parameters in Nb$_3$Sn

The high frequency vortex motion in Nb3Sn was analyzed in this work up to 12 T. We used a dielectric loaded resonator tuned at 15 GHz to evaluate the surface impedance Z of a Nb3Sn bulk sample (24.8 at.%Sn). From the field induced variation of Z, the high frequency vortex parameters (the pinning constant k p , the depinning frequency ν p and the flux flow resistivity ρ ff ) were obtained over a large temperature and field range; their field and temperature dependencies were analyzed. Comparison with other superconducting materials shows that high frequency applications in strong magnetic fields are also feasible with Nb3Sn. In the present work, we report the first measurements about the microwave response in Nb3Sn in strong magnetic fields.

Nuclear magnetic resonance investigation of superconducting and normal state Nb 3 Sn

The superconductor Nb3Sn has important applications for construction of very high-field superconducting magnets. In this work we investigate its microscopic electronic structure with 93 Nb nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The high-quality Nb 3 Sn powder sample was studied in both 3.2 T and 7 T magnetic fields in the temperature range from 4 K to 300 K. From measurement of the spectrum and its theoretical analysis, we find evidence for anisotropy despite its cubic crystal structure. Magnetic alignment of the powder grains in the superconducting state was also observed. The Knight shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate, T 1 -1 , were measured and the latter compared with BCS theory for the energy gap Δ(0) = 2.7 ± 0.3k B T c at 3.2 T and Δ(0) = 2.33 ± 0.07 k B T c at 7 T, indicating suppression of the order parameter by magnetic field.

Polarization-controlled volatile ferroelectric and capacitive switching in Sn 2 P 2 S 6

Abstract Smart electronic circuits that support neuromorphic computing on the hardware level necessitate materials with memristive, memcapacitive, and neuromorphic- like functional properties; in short, the electronic response must depend on the voltage history, thus enabling learning algorithms. Here we demonstrate volatile ferroelectric switching of Sn 2 P 2 S 6 at room temperature and see that initial polarization orientation strongly determines the properties of polarization switching. In particular, polarization switching hysteresis is strongly imprinted by the original polarization state, shifting the regions of non-linearity toward zero-bias. As a corollary, polarization switching also enables effective capacitive switching, approaching the sought-after regime of memcapacitance. Landau–Ginzburg–Devonshire simulations demonstrate that one mechanism by which polarization can control the shape of the hysteresis loop is the existence of charged domain walls (DWs) decorating the periphery of the repolarization nucleus. These walls oppose the growth of the switched domain and favor back-switching, thus creating a scenario of controlled volatile ferroelectric switching. Although the measurements were carried out with single crystals, prospectively volatile polarization switching can be tuned by tailoring sample thickness, DW mobility and electric fields, paving way to non-linear dielectric properties for smart electronic circuits.

Two years of optical and NIR observations of the superluminous supernova UID 30901 discovered by the UltraVISTA SN survey

ABSTRACT We present deep optical and near-infrared photometry of UID 30901, a superluminous supernova (SLSN) discovered during the UltraVISTA survey. The observations were obtained with VIRCAM (YJHKs) mounted on the VISTA telescope, DECam (griz) on the Blanco telescope, and SUBARU Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC; grizy). These multiband observations comprise +700 d making UID 30901 one of the best photometrically followed SLSNe to date. The host galaxy of UID 30901 is detected in a deep HST F814W image with an AB magnitude of 27.3 ± 0.2. While no spectra exist for the SN or its host galaxy, we perform our analysis assuming z = 0.37, based on the photometric redshift of a possible host galaxy found at a projected distance of 7 kpc. Fitting a blackbody to the observations, the radius, temperature, and bolometric light curve are computed. We find a maximum bolometric luminosity of 5.4 ± 0.34 × 1043 erg s−1. A flattening in the light curve beyond 600 d is observed and several possible causes are discussed. We find the observations to clearly favour an SLSN type I, and plausible power sources such as the radioactive decay of 56Ni and the spin-down of a magnetar are compared to the data. We find that the magnetar model yields a good fit to the observations with the following parameters: a magnetic field B = 1.4 ± 0.3 × 1014 G, spin period of P = 6.0 ± 0.1 ms, and ejecta mass $M_{\mathrm{ ej}} = 11.9^{+4.8}_{-6.4} \,\mathrm{ M}_{\odot }$.

New candidates for AM Canum Venaticorum stars among ASAS-SN transients

Abstract We studied Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) light curves of 34 dwarf nova candidates discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) between 2020 May 12 and September 9 and found six AM CVn-type candidates. All objects showed short outbursts (post-superoutburst rebrightenings) on the fading tail. Two objects (ASASSN-20eq, ASASSN-20la) showed double superoutbursts. Three objects (ASASSN-20jt, ASASSN-20ke, and ASASSN-20lr) showed short superoutbursts (5–6 d). These features in the light curve can be used in discriminating AM CVn-type candidates from hydrogen-rich systems. In contrast to hydrogen-rich systems, some object did not show red color excess during the rebrightening or fading tail phase. We interpret that this is due to the higher ionization temperature in helium disks. Two objects had long (likely) supercycles: ASASSN-20gx (8.5 yr) and ASASSN-20lr (7 yr). We provide a scheme for identifying AM CVn-type candidates based on the light curve characteristics.

Nuclear spin coherence and RKKY interaction in superconducting Nb 3 Sn

We have investigated the normal and superconducting states of the technologically important compound Nb$_3$Sn using $^{93}$Nb nuclear magnetic resonance. From spin-lattice relaxation we find strong suppression of the zero-temperature superconducting order parameter by magnetic field. Additionally we have identified an anomalously large electron-nuclear exchange interaction from spin-spin relaxation measurements, an order of magnitude beyond that of the nuclear dipolar coupling. This RKKY interaction evolves from normal to superconducting states, becoming essentially Lorentzian in the low temperature limit.

Mesoscale variations of the chemical and electronic landscape on the surface of the Weyl semimetal Co 3 ⁢Sn 2⁢ S 2 visualized by ARPES and XPS

The multiple crystalline terminations in magnetic Weyl semimetal Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 display distinct topological and trivial surface states, which have successfully been distinguished experimentally. However, a model of pure terminations is known to be inadequate because these surfaces exhibit a high degree of spatial heterogeneity and point disorder. Here, in this study, we perform a spectromicroscopy study of the surface chemistry and surface electronic structure using photoemission measurements in combination with first-principles calculations of core levels. We identify an intermediate region with properties distinct from both the sulfur and tin terminations, and demonstrate that the spectral features in this region can be associated with a disordered termination with a varying density of surface tin vacancies. This work establishes heuristics for identifying variable surface disorder using photoemission, an important prerequisite to experimentally establishing the behavior of momentum-space topological surface features subject to variable surface disorder on a single cleave.
