Design and Development of the Handling Frame Assembly Table for the National Ignition Facility Blast Shields

The Handling Frame Assembly Table is a custom designed piece of equipment developed to support the NIF Sustainment Project. The goal of the NIF Sustainment Project is to refurbish the National Ignition Facility (NIF), the world’s largest and most energetic laser, so it can continue advancing research in fusion energy, national security, and high energy density physics. A key aspect of this effort involves replacing all 1,728 blast shields on the NIF, which requires specialized equipment such as the Handling Frame Assembly Table to support the production of new blast shields. This project follows a systems engineering approach that guides the design sequence. This report documents the design process from initial concept through final design, including stakeholder analysis, requirements development, conceptual design, final design, and design validation. Future work will focus on building and commissioning the system.

Shielding development for the VENUS imaging instrument

VENUS is an imaging instrument that will use a broad range of neutron wavelengths, from epithermal to cold, will include enhanced contrast mechanisms, and will offer novel energy-selective imaging techniques that directly connect the structures, properties, and function of complex engineering materials and systems to reveal practical and fundamental answers about their real-world performance. The instrument is to be built at SNS beam line 10 and will face the decoupled poisoned hydrogen moderator. The driving cost for the instrument is the beam line and instrument cave shielding. Initial scoping analyses were performed to estimate thickness and composition of shielding materials for the instrument cave and beam line. In light of the upcoming Proton Power Upgrade (PPU) project, these transport analyses were performed for proton beam on target at 1.3 GeV and 2 MW.

Experimental Observations of Aerodynamic and Heating Test on Insulating Heat Shields

Several different types of insulating heat shields have been subjected to aerodynamic tests and radiant-heating tests in order to obtain a better insight into the problems involved when the primary structure of m aerodynamically heated vehicle is substantially cooler than the exposed external surface. One of the main problems was considered to be a proper allowance for thermal expansion caused by these large temperature differences, so that undue distortion or thermal stresses would not occur in either the outer shield or the underlying structure. corrugated outer skin with suitably designed expansion joints was a feature of all the specimens tested.

Infrared shield facilitates optical pyrometer measurements

Water-cooled shield facilitates optical pyrometer high temperature measurements of small sheet metal specimens subjected to tensile stress in fatigue tests. The shield excludes direct or reflected radiation from one face of the specimen and permits viewing of the infrared radiation only.

Sensors measure surface ablation rate of reentry vehicle heat shield

Sensors measure surface erosion rate of ablating material in reentry vehicle heat shield. Each sensor, which is placed at precise depths in the heat shield is activated when the ablator surface erodes to the location of a sensing point. Sensor depth and activation time determine ablator surface erosion rate.

Logic circuitry used to automatically test shielded cables

Automatic cable tester checks multiple shielded conductors assembly cable connections. The tester uses logic circuitry to sequentially test all conductors and their shields to reveal any connection error in a GO-NO GO test.

Thermal radiation shields for piping in vacuum environments

System of thermal radiation shielding reduces radiant heat transfer in vacuum installations containing piping which carries working fluids. Method employs successive layers of spacers and rolled metal shields which are easily installed or removed, expedites efficient removal of entrapped gases, and adapts easily to small pipings.

Hobel stripper for shielded and unshielded flat conductor cable

Stripping tool exposes an area of shield for grounding purposes without removing an area of insulation between terminated shield and exposed conductors. Tool does not require heated blade and is capable of removing small portions of material at a time, to any depth.

Computer program optimizes design of nuclear radiation shields

Computer program, OPEX 2, determines minimum weight, volume, or cost for shields. Program incorporates improved coding, simplified data input, spherical geometry, and an expanded output. Method is capable of altering dose-thickness relationship when a shield layer has been removed.
