Determination of the Relative Sign of the Higgs Boson Couplings to W and Z Bosons Using WH Production via Vector-Boson Fusion with the ATLAS Detector

The associated production of Higgs and W bosons via vector-boson fusion is highly sensitive to the relative sign of the Higgs boson couplings to W and Z bosons. In this Letter, two searches for this process are presented, using 140 fb -1 of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The first search targets scenarios with opposite-sign couplings of the W and Z bosons to the Higgs boson, while the second targets standard model-like scenarios with same-sign couplings. Both analyses consider Higgs boson decays into a pair of b quarks and W boson decays with an electron or muon. The data exclude the opposite-sign coupling hypothesis with a significance beyond 5⁢σ, and the observed (expected) upper limit set on the cross section for vector-boson fusion W⁢H production is 9.0 (8.7) times the standard model value at 95% confidence level.

Realtime dynamics of hyperon spin correlations from string fragmentation in a deformed four-flavor Schwinger model

Self-polarizing weak decays of Λ -hyperons provide unique insight into the role of entanglement in the fragmentation of QCD strings through measurements of the spin correlations of Λ Λ ¯ pairs produced in collider experiments. The simplest quantum field theory representing the underlying parton dynamics is the four-flavor massive Schwinger model plus an effective spin-flip term, where the flavors are mapped to light (up or down) and heavy (strange) quarks and their spins. This construction provides a novel way to explore hyperon spin correlations in 1 + 1 dimensions. We investigate the evolution of these correlations for different string configurations that are sensitive to the rich structure of the model Hamiltonian. Measurement of the $t\bar{t}$ charge asymmetry in events with highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The measurement of the charge asymmetry in top quark pair events with highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks decaying to a single lepton and jets is presented. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . The selection is optimized for top quarks produced with large Lorentz boosts, resulting in nonisolated leptons and overlapping jets. The top quark charge asymmetry is measured for events with a $t\bar{t}$ invariant mass larger than 750 GeV and corrected for detector and acceptance effects using a binned maximum likelihood fit. The measured top quark charge asymmetry of ($0.42_{-0.69}^{+0.64}$) % is in good agreement with the standard model prediction at next-to-next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamic perturbation theory with next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections. The result is also presented for two invariant mass ranges, 750–900 and > 900 GeV .

Confinement transition to gravitational waves in the one-flavor $SU(4)$ Hyper Stealth Dark Matter theory

The thermodynamics of the $SU(4)$ gauge theory with a single flavor of fundamental quarks is analyzed on the lattice with dynamical fermion simulations, which is the low-energy sector of a realistic, strongly-interacting dark matter model -- the Hyper Stealth Dark Matter. The gravitational wave spectrum from the first-order confinement transition in the early universe is further calculated, where the effect of the dark sea quarks, which decrease the interface tension in the effective potential of the Polyakov loop, is shown numerically to lower the gravitational wave amplitude.

Data-driven results for light-quark connected and strange-plus-disconnected hadronic g − 2 short- and long-distance windows

A key issue affecting the attempt to reduce the uncertainty on the Standard Model prediction for the muon anomalous magnetic moment is the current discrepancy between lattice-QCD and data-driven results for the hadronic vacuum polarization. Progress on this issue benefits from precise data-driven determinations of the isospin-limit light-quark-connected (lqc) and strange-plus-light-quark-disconnected ( s + lqd ) components of the related RBC/UKQCD windows. In this paper, using a strategy employed previously for the intermediate window, we provide data-driven results for the lqc and s + lqd components of the short- and long-distance RBC/UKQCD windows. Comparing these results with those from the lattice, we find significant discrepancies in the lqc parts but good agreement for the s + lqd components. We also explore the impact of recent CMD- 3 e + e − → π + π − cross section results, demonstrating that an upward shift in the ρ -peak region of the type seen in the CMD-3 data serves to eliminate the discrepancies for the lqc components without compromising the good agreement between lattice and data-driven s + lqd results. Flavor in SU(5)$SU(5)$ Finite Grand Unified Models

Abstract Four supersymmetric models which exhibit and/or symmetries are studied, that are finite to two or all loops, and their corresponding mass matrices. The first is an all‐loop finite model based on an flavor symmetry, which leads to phenomenologically nonviable mass matrices. The remaining models, based on cyclic symmetries, show various mass textures, some of which are phenomenologically promising. For the two‐loop finite models, the parametric solutions to the finiteness conditions determine completely some of the Yukawa couplings, and lead to a restricted range of values for other ones at the GUT scale, with a considerable reduction in the number of free parameters. One particular solution of the two‐loop models shows an enhanced symmetry, leading to an all‐loop finite model, which has a significant parameter reduction and could in principle reproduce the observed quark masses and mixing pattern. In this case the finiteness conditions determine the absolute value of all the Yukawa couplings at the unification scale. Finally, the minimum number of phases in the mass matrices and their position are determined, a task not previously done in Finite Unified Theories, which contributes towards the reduction of parameters and a better understanding of the Yukawa couplings.

Toward a unified treatment of Δ S = 0 parity violation in low-energy nuclear processes

We revisit the unified treatment of low-energy hadronic parity violation espoused by Desplanques, Donoghue, and Holstein to the end of an ab initio treatment of parity violation in low-energy nuclear processes within the standard model. Here, we use our improved effective Hamiltonian and precise nonperturbative assessments of the quark charges of the nucleon within lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) to make new assessments of the parity-violating meson-nucleon coupling constants. Comparing with recent, precise measurements of hadronic parity violation in few-body nuclear reactions, we find improved agreement with these experimental results, though some tensions remain. We thus note the broader problem of comparing low-energy constants from nuclear and few-nucleon systems, considering, too, unresolved theoretical issues in connecting an ab initio, effective Hamiltonian approach to chiral effective theories. We note how future experiments and lattice QCD studies could sharpen the emerging picture, promoting the study of hadronic parity violation as a laboratory for testing “end-to-end” theoretical descriptions of weak processes in hadrons and nuclei at low energies.

Effect of causality constraints on Bayesian analyses of heavy-ion collisions

There have long been questions about the limits to the validity of relativistic fluid dynamics and whether it is being used outside its regime of validity in modern simulations of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. An important new tool for answering this question is a causality analysis in the nonlinear regime—if the solutions of the evolution equations do not respect relativistic causality, then they are not a faithful representation of the underlying relativistic theory (in this case, quantum chromodynamics). Using this nonlinear criterion, it has recently been shown that hydrodynamics is indeed being used outside its regime of validity in simulations, at least sometimes. Here we explore the phenomenological implications, particularly the quantitative effects of demanding limits on acausality in modern Bayesian parameter estimation. We find that, while typically only a small fraction of the system's energy is initially in an acausal regime, placing strict limits on the allowed energy fraction significantly changes the preferred properties of the initial condition, which in turn alters the extracted medium properties such as bulk viscosity, where large values are no longer favored. Furthermore, these findings highlight the importance of developing better theoretical descriptions of the early-time, out-of-equilibrium dynamics of relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Observable signatures of initial state momentum anisotropies in nuclear collisions

In this work, we show that the correlation between the elliptic momentum anisotropy v 2 and the average transverse momentum [ p T ] at fixed multiplicity in small system nuclear collisions carries information on the origin of the observed momentum anisotropy. A calculation using a hybrid IP-Glasma+ music +UrQMD model that includes contributions from final state response to the initial geometry as well as initial state momentum anisotropies of the color glass condensate predicts a characteristic sign change of the correlator ρ ^ ( v 2 2 , [ p T ] ) as a function of charged particle multiplicity in p + Au and d + Au collisions at s = 200 GeV , and p + Pb collisions at s = 5.02 TeV . This sign change is absent in calculations without initial state momentum anisotropies. The model further predicts a qualitative difference between the centrality dependence of ρ ^ ( v 2 2 , [ p T ] ) in Au + Au collisions at s = 200 GeV and Pb + Pb collisions at s = 5.02 TeV , with only the latter showing a sign change in peripheral events. Predictions for O + O collisions at different collision energy show a similar behavior. Experimental observation of these distinct qualitative features of ρ ^ ( v 2 2 , [ p T ] ) in small and large systems would constitute strong evidence for the presence and importance of initial state momentum anisotropies predicted by the color glass condensate effective theory.

ψ ( 2 S ) Suppression in Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC

The production of the ψ ( 2 S ) charmonium state was measured with ALICE in Pb-Pb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV , in the dimuon decay channel. A significant signal was observed for the first time at LHC energies down to zero transverse momentum, at forward rapidity ( 2.5 < y < 4 ). The measurement of the ratio of the inclusive production cross sections of the ψ ( 2 S ) and J / ψ resonances is reported as a function of the centrality of the collisions and of transverse momentum, in the region p T < 12 GeV / c . The results are compared with the corresponding measurements in p p collisions, by forming the double ratio [ σ ψ ( 2 S ) / σ J / ψ ] Pb − Pb / [ σ ψ ( 2 S ) / σ J / ψ ] p p . It is found that in Pb-Pb collisions the ψ ( 2 S ) is suppressed by a factor of ∼ 2 with respect to the J / ψ . The ψ ( 2 S ) nuclear modification factor R AA was also obtained as a function of both centrality and p T . The results show that the ψ ( 2 S ) resonance yield is strongly suppressed in Pb-Pb collisions, by a factor of up to ∼ 3 with respect to p p . Comparisons of cross section ratios with previous Super Proton Synchrotron findings by the NA50 experiment and of R AA with higher- p T results at LHC energy are also reported. These results and the corresponding comparisons with calculations of transport and statistical models address questions on the presence and properties of charmonium states in the quark-gluon plasma formed in nuclear collisions at the LHC. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration 2024 CERN

Inclusive and differential cross-section measurements of $ t\overline{t}Z$ production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector, including EFT and spin-correlation interpretations

Measurements of both the inclusive and differential production cross sections of a top-quark-top-antiquark pair in association with a Z boson ($t\overline{t}Z$) are presented. Final states with two, three or four isolated leptons (electrons or muons) are targeted. The measurements use the data recorded by the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider during the years 2015–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 . The inclusive cross section is measured to be ${\sigma}_{t\overline{t}Z}$ = 0.86 ± 0.04 (stat.) ± 0.04 (syst.) pb and found to be in agreement with the most advanced Standard Model predictions. The differential measurements are presented as a function of a number of observables that probe the kinematics of the $t\overline{t}Z$ system. Both the absolute and normalised differential cross-section measurements are performed at particle level and parton level for specific fiducial volumes, and are compared with NLO+NNLL theoretical predictions. The results are interpreted in the framework of Standard Model effective field theory and used to set limits on a large number of dimension-6 operators involving the top quark. The first measurement of spin correlations in $t\overline{t}Z$ events is presented: the results are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations, and the null hypothesis of no spin correlations is disfavoured with a significance of 1.8 standard deviations.

Testing Lepton Flavor Universality with Pion, Kaon, Tau, and Beta Decays

We present an overview of searches for violation of lepton flavor universality with a focus on low energy precision probes using π, K, τ, and nuclear beta decays. We review the current experimental results, summarize the theoretical status within the context of the Standard Model, and discuss future prospects (both experimental and theoretical). We review the implications of these measurements for physics beyond the Standard Model by performing a global model-independent fit to modified W couplings to leptons and four-fermion operators. We also discuss new physics in the context of simplified models and review Standard Model extensions with a focus on those that can explain a possible deviation from unitarity of the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa quark mixing matrix.

NLO QCD corrections to full off-shell production of $t\overline{t}Z$ including leptonic decays

Motivated by ongoing new physics searches in the top-quark sector at the Large Hadron Collider we report on the calculation of NLO QCD corrections to the Standard Model $pp$→$t\overline{t}Z + X$ process in the tetra-lepton decay channel. This calculation is based on the matrix elements for the $e^+v_eμ^-\bar v_μb\bar bτ^+τ^-$ final state and includes all resonant and non-resonant Feynman diagrams, interferences and off-shell effects of the top quark as well as the W and Z gauge bosons. Also incorporated are photon-induced contributions. As it is customary for such studies, we show theoretical predictions for both fixed and dynamical factorisation and renormalisation scale choices and different PDF sets. Furthermore, we study the main theoretical uncertainties that are associated with neglected higher-order terms in the perturbative expansion and with the parameterisation of the PDF sets. In order to investigate the size of off-shell effects and higher-order corrections in top-quark decays, we perform a second computation for this process, which is based on the narrow-width-approximation where the top quarks, W and Z gauge bosons are kept on-shell. Results are given for the integrated and differential fiducial cross sections for the LHC Run II center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV.

Angular Distribution of Dimuons from Drell-Yan Production in p+Fe Interactions at 120 GeV Beam Energy

In the E906/SeaQuest Fermilab experiment, we report a measurement of the angular distributions by measuring the angular parameters $\lambda$, $\mu$, and $\nu$ of Drell-Yan dimuons produced using a 120 GeV proton beam incident on an iron target. The angular distribution in the naive Drell-Yan model does not show any $\cos2\phi$ dependency, where $\phi$ denotes the azimuthal angle of dimuons in the Collins-Soper frame. However, pion-induced Drell-Yan experiments, such as NA10 and E615, have observed a significant dependence on $\cos2\phi$. The Boer–Mulders function, a transverse momentum-dependent distribution function, represents the correlation between the transverse spin and the transverse momentum of the quark. A non-zero Boer-Mulders function or an improved higher-order Drell-Yan model considering QCD effects can produce a $\cos 2\phi$ modulation in the Drell-Yan angular distribution. To measure the angular distributions, we have used an event mixing method to construct the combin atorial background, which was then subtracted from the data to isolate the Drell-Yan signal. Following this, we corrected the detector, trigger, and reconstruction efficiencies using a doubly-iterative Bayesian Unfolding method. This iterative unfolding technique improves the response matrix based on the results of the previous unfolding step, ensuring robust convergence without exaggeration of uncertainties. The angular distributions of the dimuons were measured over the invariant mass range $5.0 < M_{\mu^+ \mu^-} < 8.0$ $GeV/c^2$, with dimuon transverse momentum $P_T < 2$ GeV/c and Feynman-x $-0.18 < x_F < 0.9$. The measured angular distributions are then compared with the QCD calculations for $p + \text{Fe}$ interactions, and proton-induced angular distribution measurements from other experiments. We have observed weak $\cos 2\phi$ modulations as a function of $P_T$. For $P_T > 1.0 \, \text{GeV}/c$, the predicted NNLO perturbative QCD value of $\nu$ is larger than what we have me asured at E906/SeaQuest. Moreover, we have not observed a strong dependence of $\nu$ on the kinematic variables, such as dimuon mass $M_{\mu^+ \mu^-}$ and Bjorken-$x$. The spin alignment of the virtual photon, $\lambda$, measured from the SeaQuest Drell-Yan $p+\text{Fe}$ data, is found to be strongly dependent on $P_T$, decreasing as $P_T$ increases. $\lambda$ also holds to the upper bound condition $\lambda < 1.0$ within the statistical uncertainty, showing a trend similar to that predicted by NNLO perturbative QCD. However, for $1.0 < P_T < 2.0 \, \text{GeV}/c$, the extracted $\lambda$ value from SeaQuest is smaller than that predicted by perturbative QCD at NNLO.
