Decarbonization During Predevelopment of Modular Building Solutions

Off-site construction methods offer the opportunity to compress costs of net-zero energy (NZE) housing using the advantages of mass production. There has been limited investigation on trade-offs between site-built and industrialized construction from the perspective of reducing the incremental cost of NZE strategies and reducing greenhouse gas emissions during embodied and operational stages. Blokable, LLC, a vertically integrated modular builder, wanted to know how the learning curves of mass production would help them decarbonize their existing modular housing prototype at a relative cost advantage. The method developed for this question looked at the life cycle assessment of an individual apartment and used learning-curve efficiencies to approximate the relative advantage of construction-at-scale. Greenhouse gas emissions were quantified by a learning-affected, whole-life carbon emissions model and demonstrated a path to a 60% reduction of whole-life CO2-equivalent in the 2030 production year. The resultant roadmap considers a best-first approach to decarbonizing a modular building product line, and the method can be replicated for other modular builders.

IER 517: Molybdenum Critical Experiment Design [Slides]

In nuclear fuels, U-Mo metallic fuels are used in new space reactor designs and new research reactor fuels. MITR, MURR, and NBSR reactors plan on converting from different HEU fuels to a U-Mo HALEU fuel. In spend nuclear fuel, 95 Mo is one of the 15 main absorbing fission products in irradiated LWR fuel. This makes it important for criticality safety studies in transportation and reprocessing. In structural materials. Molybdenum is found commonly in alloys that make up the structural materials of nuclear reactors such as type 316 SS. Molybdenum helps to improve high temperature performance and corrosion resistance.

EUCLID Sensitivity Database

This report documents the EUCLID sensitivity database along with its several use-cases. EUCLID computed sensitivities for the following integral responses: Criticality of ICSBEP critical assemblies, LLNL pulsed-sphere neutron-leakage spectra, reaction rates in selected ICBSEP critical assemblies, delayed neutron factions of selected ICSBEP critical assemblies, reactivity coefficients in two ICSBEP critical assemblies, sub-critical assembly responses and Rossi-alpha of selected critical assemblies. It is described for each response what the reported observable constitutes, the method we used to obtain the sensitivities, and which integral experiments were studied. It is also documented briefly in what format these sensitivities are stored. These sensitivities were used for many aspects of the EUCLID project, like ML-supported large-scale nuclear-data validation, or optimization of integral experiments. But these sensitivities can also be applied for more established processes in the nuclear-data application field such as adjustment or assessing the upper sub-critical limit.

NucD-23 Nuclear Diagnostics Development: The future of neutron imaging and gamma reaction history

The Neutron Imaging team has deployed novel, active detection systems along two lines of sight at NIF. Studies aimed to characterize NIS sensitivity to implosion shape will be carried out to further extend reconstruction capabilities. Additionally, an improved camera timing system that will reduce uncertainties stemming from bang time jitter will also be fielded. The NIF GRH data recording system is more then 10 years old needs to be updated. Bandwidth and noise are a key limiting factor for improving data quality. New high bandwidth and low noise components will be tested at OMEGA in advance before fielding the components at NIF.

Evaluating Barcode Size and Metal Surface Treatment Options for a Global UF 6 Cylinder Identifier

A team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory tested various barcode sizes, materials, surface finishes, and marking techniques to determine suitable direct part marking techniques and barcode specifications for a new uranium hexafluoride (UF 6 ) cylinder global identifier. This paper describes testing those variables at different read distances and angles with several commercial off-the-shelf direct part mark or barcode readers. This research concluded that a 1.4 in. 2D Data Matrix barcode with a 0.1 in. quiet zone would be appropriate for the machine-readable feature on the proposed UF 6 cylinder global identifier. Testing suggests that this size barcode could be read from an angle of up to 30° over the range of 10–100 cm using multiple commercial off-the-shelf handheld direct part mark or barcode readers. Testing also suggested that barcodes marked on ball-blasted stainless steel with CerMark laser marking ink may be a good choice for the proposed UF 6 cylinder global identifier because they exhibited high contrast and were readable from a desirable range of distances and angles.

Spring 2022 update on the status of the Local Wavenumber Model (LWN) in xRAGE

An updated implementation of the Local Wavenumber Model (LWN) is discussed, primarily differing from recent versions by placing a greater focus on capturing a wide variety of turbulent flows including compressible flows. New models are introduced for spectral backscatter effects, the effect of bulk compression on the spectra, and incorporating the multispecies variables tracked in BHR4. Methods for reducing the compurational expense of tracking spectra for turbulent quantites are also investigated. Like recent versions of BHR, we test LWN in a number of canonical flows using a single set of coefficients, but additional coefficient tuning is likely to be required to improve the agreement with some of these flows.

The tracer-BHR4 model for subgrid mixing layers

A model for the passive evolution of turbulent subgrid-scale mixing layers is developed based on the model of tracer-BHR model of Braun & Gore. The new model, tracer-BHR4, mainly differs from the previous iteration in that it aims to replicate the behavior of BHR4, instead of BHR3.1. The coefficients from BHR4 are used and a new model for mixing layer growth is developed to allow the tracer model to reproduce the de-mixing behavior seen in BHR4. Additionally, an improved timestep size controller is introduced. The new model is tested on problems containing Rayleigh-Taylor or Richtmyer-Meshkov mixing layers, and is able to reproduce the behavior of well resolved BHR4 simulations with reasonable accuracy.

The Energy in Modular (EMOD) Buildings Method: A Guide to Energy-Efficient Design for Industrialized Construction of Modular Buildings

Industrialized construction has immense potential to address the growing need globally to build and upgrade the building stock to be affordable, energy-efficient, and resilient. It can also help achieve the United States' goal of a 50% reduction in U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030. Despite this potential, and the ever-increasing push for electrification and decarbonization of households in the United States, industrialized construction has not yet been leveraged specifically to help address these challenges and accelerate the pathway to meet these goals. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) aims to claim this missed opportunity by focusing on delivering affordable, grid-efficient net-zero energy (NZE) modular buildings for underserved communities to ensure an equitable transition to the future of clean energy, accelerate decarbonization of the built environment, and support the development of a high-productivity construction and energy efficiency workforce. The Energy in Modular (EMOD) method is our approach to designing, producing, and delivering affordable, net-zero energy, low-carbon, and healthier buildings at scale. The following energy efficiency strategies are part of the scope of this guide: envelope thermal control, envelope infiltration control, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, smart controls, and solar plus storage. We draw synergies between design for manufacturing and assembly, process optimization, retrofit technologies, and digitization. Our goal is to influence the improvement and production of buildings to increase performance, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce GHG emissions. This guide documents the research and development efforts initiated by a set of design objectives to "modularize" a set of energy efficiency and low-carbon strategies into a housing unit while preserving and enhancing energy efficiency benefits and decarbonization pathways. This guide is intended to serve as a framework for housing developers, housing agencies, architects, energy experts, and process engineers or factory operator personnel who are critical to today's modular builder teams. This guide focuses on specific energy efficiency strategies, decarbonization pathways, and associated processes as part of NREL's research efforts. Stakeholders may substitute other means, methods, and technologies for the ones evaluated in this study.
