Magnetic moment distribution of magnetic cataclysmic variables

A simulation study is made of the relative numbers of the AM Herculis binaries and the intermediate polars as a function of the orbital period using random variables subject to suitable constraints to describe the various parameters. It is shown that the observations can be matched by a single distribution in the magnetic moment equals 0.7 +/- 0.3. For such an ensemble, the intermediate polars are distributed in the log(Porb) - log(Ps) diagram about the critical disk line but with a larger scatter than observed.

Effect of magnetic helicity upon rectilinear propagation of charged particles in random magnetic fields

When charged particles spiral along a large constant magnetic field, their trajectories are scattered by any random field components that are superposed on the guiding field. If the random field configuration embodies helicity, the scattering is asymmetrical with respect to a plane perpendicular to the guiding field, for particles moving into the forward hemisphere are scattered at different rates from those moving into the backward hemisphere. This asymmetry gives rise to new terms in the transport equations that describe propagation of charged particles. Helicity has virtually no impact on qualitative features of the diffusive mode of propagation. However, characteristic velocities of the coherent modes that appear after a highly anisotropic injection exhibit an asymmetry related to helicity. Explicit formulas, which embody the effects of helicity, are given for the anisotropies, the coefficient diffusion, and the coherent velocities. Predictions derived from these expressions are in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations of particle transport, but the simulations reveal certain phenomena whose explanation calls for further analytical work.

IRIS Observations of Magnetic Interactions in the Solar Atmosphere Between Preexisting and Emerging Magnetic Fields. II. UV Emission Properties

Multiwavelength ultraviolet (UV) observations by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph satellite in active region NOAA 12529 have recently pointed out the presence of long-lasting brightenings, akin to UV bursts, and simultaneous plasma ejections occurring in the upper chromosphere and transition region during secondary flux emergence. These signatures have been interpreted as evidence of small-scale, recurrent magnetic reconnection episodes between the emerging flux region (EFR) and the preexisting plage field. Here we characterize the UV emission of these strong, intermittent brightenings and study the surge activity above the chromospheric arch filament system (AFS) overlying the EFR. We analyze the surges and the cospatial brightenings observed at different wavelengths. We find an asymmetry in the emission between the blue and red wings of the Si iv λ1402 Å and Mg ii k λ2796.3 lines, which clearly outlines the dynamics of the structures above the AFS that form during the small-scale eruptive phenomena. We also detect a correlation between the Doppler velocity and skewness of the Si iv λλ1394 and 1402 line profiles in the UV burst pixels. Finally, we show that genuine emission in the Fe xii λ1349.4 line is cospatial to the Si iv brightenings. This definitely reveals a pure coronal counterpart to the reconnection event.

Computational search for itinerant n -type and p -type magnetic semiconductors: Arsenopyrites as bipolar magnetic semiconductors

We report a computational search for three-dimensional bulk ferromagnetic semiconductors based on itinerant Stoner physics. Stoner-based ferromagnetic semiconductors require an unusual combination of high band edge density of states and moderate transport effective mass. Nonetheless, several potential materials are found. Here, we identify arsenopyrites, exemplified by FeAsS, as materials that, with suitable doping, exhibit ferromagnetic semiconducting behavior for both n- and p-type dopants. The existence of a material that becomes ferromagnetic for both p and n types may enable device concepts, for example, ferromagnetic p–n junction devices.
