LANL Charging Practices Course Number 18930

Because numerous federal agencies and outside organizations provide funding for hundreds of projects and programs, Los Alamos National Laboratory's system for charging for time and effort, and the purchase of materials, supplies, and services, is complex. As a LANL employee, you are responsible, both legally and ethically, for knowing and consistently following charging practice rules, complying with Laboratory financial policies, and understanding the consequences of improper charging. This course is designed to increase your understanding of an employee's responsibilities regarding charging practices at the Laboratory and help you charge time and labor and non-labor costs accurately. The training is required of all Laboratory workers except craft labor, who have separate training that is specific to how their effort is charged and collected. This training should take less than 20 minutes to complete.

Classified library celebrates two-year anniversary print your own commemorative history posters

Today is the National Security Research Center’s second anniversary. These two years, though, have been eight decades in the making, said NSRC Director Riz Ali. “We opened our doors in 2019, but the Center’s beginnings date back to World War II when J. Robert Oppenheimer created the Lab in Los Alamos to develop the first-ever nuclear weapons,” Ali said. “An important part of opening the Lab included standing up a technical reports library. Since then, we have amassed millions of holdings and today we are one of the top research institutions in the country.” What had long-been a repository of classified archival materials is today a dynamic, vibrant library that outsizes the collections of other similar research libraries around the country. Today, the NSRC houses the Laboratory’s classified nuclear weapons research, data and reports, as well as unclassified historical artifacts – the stories, photos, films and more from the people who have been a part of the Lab from the start.

Betty Perkins: A giant in nuclear weapons research Reports amassed after testing ban are vital to today’s work

Today’s nuclear weapons research builds upon the work of the past, often on the shoulders of the giants of nuclear document preservation in the absence of testing. One of these giants is weapons historian Betty Perkins. Before her retirement in 2016, Perkins held numerous roles at LANL, but she is best known for her pioneering work in the Weapons Program where she generated classified reports on nuclear weapons design and development. Over many years, she meticulously researched and recorded the histories of a number of critical efforts in Los Alamos’s nuclear weapons program, culminating in 13 reports comprising more than 7,200 pages.

NCERC Capabilities [Slides]

NCERC is our nation’s only generalpurpose critical experiments facility and is one of only a few that remain operational throughout the world. The mission of the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) is to conduct experiments and training with critical assemblies and fissionable material at or near criticality in order to explore reactivity phenomena, and to operate the assemblies in the regions from subcritical through delayed critical. One critical assembly, Godiva-IV, is designed to operate above prompt critical.

Plutonium and poetry: Where Trinity and Oppenheimer's reading habits met Literary inspirations, correcting misinterpretation of his famous quote

The Lab’s first director, J. Robert Oppenheimer, was a man of sonnets and scientific synthesis. Oppenheimer’s work at Los Alamos was defined not only by physics and administrative skill, but also by a life philosophy inspired, in part, by literature. The Trinity test, which took place 76 years ago on July 16th in the New Mexico desert, epitomizes this. Known as one of the greatest scientific achievements ever, the successful detonation of the world’s first nuclear weapon marked the dawn of the Atomic Age. Created in just 27, albeit harrowing, months, Oppenheimer and his team at the Los Alamos Lab worked nonstop on this clandestine effort to help end World War II. As he had done throughout his life, Oppenheimer continued to foster his love of literature during the Manhattan Project. Two of his influences were John Donne and the Hindu scripture Bhagavad-Gita. Oppenheimer recalled both during the Trinity test.

Notes from the GEM Chair

I hope this letter finds you all safe and healthy. Due to the continuing uncertainties with the COVID-19 pandemic, the GEM Steering Committee (SC) decided, similarly to last year, to once again hold a fully virtual workshop. The GEM 2021 summer workshop will occur from July 26 to July 30, with Sunday July 25 as the Student Day. We will follow the original format of GEM, with plenary sessions in the morning, Focus Group (FG) breakout sessions in the afternoon, and poster sessions in the evening. We encourage you to take this opportunity to share your research, technical efforts, and ideas with the GEM community. Although we realize that the big celebration will happen once we are able to meet in person again, this year is the 30th anniversary of the first GEM meeting and we envision a program that celebrates this significant milestone!
