Pyridinium Salts of Dehydrated Lanthanide Polychlorides

The reaction of lanthanide (Ln) chloride hydrates ([Ln(H 2 O) n (Cl) 3 ]) with pyridine (py) yielded a set of dehydrated pyridinium (py-H) Ln-polychloride salts. These species were crystallographically characterized as [[py-H-py][py-H] 2 [LnCl 6 ]] (Ln-6; Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd) or [[py-H] 2 [LnCl 5 (py)]] ((Ln-5; Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu). The Ln-6 metal centers adopt an octahedral (OC-6) geometry, binding six Cl ligands. The -3 charge is off-set by two py-H moieties and a di-pyridinium (py-H-py) ion. For the Ln-5 species, an OC-6 anion is formed by the Ln cation binding a single py and five Cl ligands. The remaining -2 charge is offset by two py-H + cations that H-bond to the anion. Significant H-bonding occurs between the various cation/anion moieties inducing the molecular stability. The change in structure from the Ln-6 to Ln-5 is believed to be due to the Ln-contraction producing a smaller unit cell, which prevents formation of the py-H-py + cation, leading to the loss of the H-bonding-induced stability. Based on this, it was determined that the Ln-5 structures only exist when the lattice energy is small. While dehydrated polychloride salts can be produced by simply mixing in pyridine, the final structures adopted result from a delicate balance of cation size, Coulombic charge, and stabilizing H-bonding.

Increased Ion Temperature and Neutron Yield Observed in Magnetized Indirectly Driven $\mathrm{D_2}$-Filled Capsule Implosions on the National Ignition Facility

Here, the application of an external 26 Tesla axial magnetic field to a D 2 gas-filled capsule indirectly driven on the National Ignition Facility is observed to increase the ion temperature by 40% and the neutron yield by a factor of 3.2 in a hot spot with areal density and temperature approaching what is required for fusion ignition. The improvements are determined from energy spectral measurements of the 2.45 MeV neutrons from the D(d, n) 3 He reaction, and the compressed central core B field is estimated to be ~4.9 kT using the 14.1 MeV secondary neutrons from the D(T, n) 4 He reactions. The experiments use a 30 kV pulsed-power system to deliver a ~ 3 μs current pulse to a solenoidal coil wrapped around a novel high-electrical-resistivity AuTa 4 hohlraum. Radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations are consistent with the experiment

Pressure-stabilized divalent ozonide CaO 3 and its impact on Earth's oxygen cycles

High pressure can drastically alter chemical bonding and produce exotic compounds that defy conventional wisdom. Especially significant are compounds pertaining to oxygen cycles inside Earth, which hold key to understanding major geological events that impact the environment essential to life on Earth. Here we report the discovery of pressure-stabilized divalent ozonide CaO3 crystal that exhibits intriguing bonding and oxidation states with profound geological implications. Our computational study identifies a crystalline phase of CaO 3 by reaction of CaO and O 2 at high pressure and high temperature conditions; ensuing experiments synthesize this rare compound under compression in a diamond anvil cell with laser heating. High-pressure x-ray diffraction data show that CaO 3 crystal forms at 35 GPa and persists down to 20 GPa on decompression. Analysis of charge states reveals a formal oxidation state of -2 for ozone anions in CaO 3 . These findings unravel the ozonide chemistry at high pressure and offer insights for elucidating prominent seismic anomalies and oxygen cycles in Earth’s interior. We further predict multiple reactions producing CaO 3 by geologically abundant mineral precursors at various depths in Earth’s mantle.

Measurement of minority carrier diffusion length in p -GaN using electron emission spectroscopy (EES)

Electron emission spectroscopy was performed on metalorganic chemical vapor deposition grown p-n – -n + junctions with p-thicknesses ranging from 50 to 300 nm, doped with [Mg] = 3.5 × 10 19 cm –3 . By measuring the decreasing emitted electron intensity from a cesiated p-GaN surface with increasing p-thickness, we were able to extract the minority carrier diffusion length of electron in p-type GaN, L e = 26 ± 3 nm. The measured value is in good agreement with literature reported values. In conclusion, the extrapolated electron current at the n – region–p-GaN interface is in reasonable agreement with the simulated electron current at the interface.

Preparation of Macroscopic Low-Density Gold Foams with Good Machinability

Uniform, macroscopic monoliths (ranging from a few millimeters to a centimeter) of low-density gold foams with ~95% porosity and ~10-μm-diameter pores were prepared by the casting of gold-coated polystyrene core-shell particles followed by the thermal removal of the polymer core. The Au foams were composed of unique hollow gold spheres and showed superior mechanical integrity and resilience compared to the foams we previously reported. Highly efficient seeding and electroless gold-plating methods in this study caused a significant morphological transition in the gold coatings from coarse particles to fine particles, and finally, to a continuous layer. A modified, scalable casting approach to form large uniform monoliths (up to ~1-cm diameter) and a gentle baking condition to minimize undesirable densification of the final foams enabled us to develop a simple, efficient synthetic route to nanostructured macroscopic low-density gold foams. To demonstrate the improved mechanical stability and machinability, a representative monolithic Au foam (~0.9 g/cm 3 ) was carefully cut into the hollow cylinder of gold foams by a series of machining and processing steps. Finally, we tried to understand the unique mechanical behaviors and properties of this gold foam by nanoindentation measurement.
