Demonstration of <2 ns timing resolution for neutrino interaction in the MicroBooNE detector

The MicroBooNE detector, located in the Booster Neutrino Beamline (BNB) at Fermilab, collected data from 2015 to 2021. MicroBooNE’s Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber is accompanied by a Photon Detection System consisting of 32 PMTs used to measure the argon scintillation light and determine the timing of the neutrino interactions. This work employs improved analysis techniques combining light signals and reconstructed tracks achieving neutrino interaction timing resolution <2 ns. The result obtained allows MicroBooNE to access the 2 ns neutrino pulse structure of the BNB for the first time. The timing resolution achieved enables significant enhancement of cosmic background rejection for all neutrino analyses. Furthermore, the ns timing resolution opens the door for searching new long-lived-particles (e.g. Heavy Neutral Leptons, Higgs Portal Scalars) in MicroBooNE, as well in future large LArTPC experiments, namely SBN and DUNE.

Composite Higgs Bosons and Mini Black Holes

Pairs of standard model fermions can annihilate to produce mini black holes with gauge quantum numbers of the Higgs boson at $M_{Planck}$. This leads to a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model at the Planck scale with strong coupling which binds fermion pairs into Higgs fields. At critical coupling the renormalization group dresses these objects, which then descend in scale to emerge as boundstate Higgs bosons at low energies. We obtain the multi-Higgs spectrum of a "scalar democracy." The observed Higgs boson is a gravitationally bound $\bar{t}t$ composite. Sequential states may be seen at the LHC, and/or its upgrades.

Quantum Spin Ice in Three-Dimensional Rydberg Atom Arrays

Quantum spin liquids are exotic phases of matter whose low-energy physics is described as the deconfined phase of an emergent gauge theory. With recent theory proposals and an experiment showing preliminary signs of Z 2 topological order [G. Semeghini , ], Rydberg atom arrays have emerged as a promising platform to realize a quantum spin liquid. In this work, we propose a way to realize a U(1) quantum spin liquid in three spatial dimensions, described by the deconfined phase of U(1) gauge theory in a pyrochlore lattice Rydberg atom array. We study the ground state phase diagram of the proposed Rydberg system as a function of experimentally relevant parameters. Within our calculation, we find that by tuning the Rabi frequency, one can access both the confinement-deconfinement transition driven by a proliferation of “magnetic” monopoles and the Higgs transition driven by a proliferation of “electric” charges of the emergent gauge theory. We suggest experimental probes for distinguishing the deconfined phase from ordered phases. This work serves as a proposal to access a confinement-deconfinement transition in three spatial dimensions on a Rydberg-based quantum simulator. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Evidence of Two-Source King Plot Nonlinearity in Spectroscopic Search for New Boson

Optical precision spectroscopy of isotope shifts can be used to test for new forces beyond the standard model, and to determine basic properties of atomic nuclei. We measure isotope shifts on the highly forbidden 2 S 1/2 → 2 F 7/2 octupole transition of trapped 168,170, 172, 174, 176 Yb ions. When combined with previous measurements in Yb + and very recent measurements in Yb, the data reveal a King plot nonlinearity of up to 240σ. Furthermore, the trends exhibited by experimental data are explained by nuclear density functional theory calculations with the Fayans functional. We also find, with 4.3σ confidence, that there is a second distinct source of nonlinearity, and discuss its possible origin.

Elementary Particle Physics Vision for EPP2024

In the fall of 2022, the decadal survey committee on Elementary Particle Physics of the US National Academies requested 2000 word Vision Papers, giving personal interpretations of the results of the Snowmass 2021 study and the future of the field. This is my contribution, which emphasizes the central role of the Higgs boson and its associated mysteries. I encourage the authors of other Vision Papers to make them widely available on the arXiv.

The benefits of diligence: how precise are predicted gravitational wave spectra in models with phase transitions?

Models of particle physics that feature phase transitions typically provide predictions for stochastic gravitational wave signals at future detectors and such predictions are used to delineate portions of the model parameter space that can be constrained. The question is: how precise are such predictions? Uncertainties enter in the calculation of the macroscopic thermal parameters and the dynamics of the phase transition itself. We calculate such uncertainties with increasing levels of sophistication in treating the phase transition dynamics. Currently, the highest level of diligence corresponds to careful treatments of the source lifetime; mean bubble separation; going beyond the bag model approximation in solving the hydrodynamics equations and explicitly calculating the fraction of energy in the fluid from these equations rather than using a fit; and including fits for the energy lost to vorticity modes and reheating effects. The lowest level of diligence incorporates none of these effects. We compute the percolation and nucleation temperatures, the mean bubble separation, the fluid velocity, and ultimately the gravitational wave spectrum corresponding to the level of highest diligence for three explicit examples: SMEFT, a dark sector Higgs model, and the real singlet-extended Standard Model (xSM). In each model, we contrast different levels of diligence in the calculation and find that the difference in the final predicted signal can be several orders of magnitude. Our results indicate that calculating the gravitational wave spectrum for particle physics models and deducing precise constraints on the parameter space of such models continues to remain very much a work in progress and warrants care.

Lepton flavor violation: From muon decays to muon colliders

We investigate the unique potential of a high-energy muon collider to probe lepton-flavor-violating signals arising from physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). Low-energy, precision searches for charged lepton flavor violation (LFV) are projected to dramatically improve their sensitivity in the coming years and could provide the first evidence of new physics. We interpret the sensitivity of these searches in terms of a set of LFV operators in the SM effective field theory. The same operators are then probed at the TeV scale via new, high-energy processes only available at a high-energy muon collider, such as 𝜇⁢𝜇 → 𝜇⁢𝜏 or the scattering of a muon of an electroweak gauge boson into LFV final states. We find that, for most operators, a muon collider could confirm signals if they are seen at future low-energy experiments, whereas for certain flavor combinations it extends the reach to scales well beyond those accessible at lower energies. We also project the sensitivity of a muon collider to lepton-flavor-violating decays of the SM Higgs boson and demonstrate improved sensitivity to ℎ → 𝑒⁢𝜏 and ℎ → 𝜇⁢𝜏 by an order of magnitude compared to the High-Luminosity LHC. The importance of having multiple, complementary probes is illustrated by considering both various combinations of operators and relative sizes of flavor-violating transitions between generations under various assumptions for the flavor structure of new physics.

Search for dark matter produced in association with a pair of bottom quarks in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for dark matter (DM) particles produced in association with bottom quarks is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . The search is performed in a final state with large missing transverse momentum and a pair of jets originating from bottom quarks. No significant excess of data is observed with respect to the standard model expectation. Results are interpreted in the context of a type-II two-Higgs-doublet model with an additional light pseudoscalar (2HDM+a). An upper limit is set on the mass of the lighter pseudoscalar, probing masses up to 260 GeV at 95% confidence level. Sensitivity to the parameter space with the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the two Higgs doublets, tan β, greater than 15 is achieved, capitalizing on the enhancement of couplings between pseudoscalars and bottom quarks with high tan β.

Preheating in Palatini Higgs inflation on the lattice

We study preheating following Higgs inflation in the Palatini formulation of gravity. We numerically evolve perturbations of the radial mode of the Higgs field and that of three scalars modeling the gauge bosons. We compare the two non-perturbative mechanisms of growth of excitations — parametric resonance and tachyonic instability — and confirm that the latter plays the dominant role. Our results provide further evidence that preheating in Palatini Higgs inflation happens within a single oscillation of the Higgs field about the bottom of its potential, consistent with the approximation of an instantaneous preheating.

Cosmological collider signatures of Higgs-R 2 inflation

We study the cosmological collider signatures in the Higgs-R 2 inflation model. We consider two distinct types of signals: one originating from the inflaton coupling to Standard Model fermions and gauge bosons, and another arising from the isocurvature mode interaction with the inflaton. In the former case, we determine that the signal magnitude is likely too small for detection by upcoming probes, primarily due to suppression by both the Planck scale and slow-roll parameters. However, we provide a detailed computation of the signal which could be potentially applicable to various Higgs inflation variants. For the isocurvature mode signals, we observe that the associated couplings remain unsuppressed when the isocurvature mode is relatively light or comparable to the inflationary scale. In this case, we study the Higgs-R 2 inflation parameter space that corresponds to the quasi-single-field inflation regime and find that the signal strength could be as large as |f NL | > 1, making Higgs-R 2 inflation a viable candidate for observation by future 21-cm surveys.

Hierarchical quark and lepton masses with sequential U(1) gauge symmetry

Instead of right-handed neutrino singlets, the standard model is extended to include lepton triplets (Σ + , Σ 0 , Σ - ). Each quark and lepton family may now transform under an anomaly-free U(1) X gauge symmetry, known already for many years. A new sequential application is presented, using just the one Higgs doublet of the standard model, together with two U(1) X Higgs singlets. The resulting structure has hierarchical quark and lepton masses, as well as a viable seesaw neutrino mass matrix.

On the realization of WIMPflation

In this work, we consider models for inflation with a stable inflation. Reheating is achieved through scattering processes such as ΦΦ → h h, where h is the Standard Model Higgs boson. We consider the reheating process in detail and show that for a relatively large coupling (needed for the late annihilations of the inflation during freeze-out), reheating is almost instantaneous leading to a relatively high reheating temperature. The process ΦΦ ↔ h h brings the inflation back into equilibrium, leading to a well studied scalar singlet dark matter candidate and Higgs portal model. We argue that such models can be derived from no-scale supergravity.

Superconducting radio frequency linear collider HELEN

This article discusses a proposed Higgs-Energy LEptoN (HELEN) $e^+e^-$ linear collider based on advanced traveling wave superconducting radio frequency technology. Here, the proposed collider offers cost and AC power savings, smaller footprint (relative to the ILC), and could be built at Fermilab. After the initial physics run at 250 GeV, the collider could be upgraded either to higher luminosity or to higher, up to 500 GeV, energies.
