Pioneer-Venus solar flux radiometer

The paper presents the design and performance characteristics of the Solar Flux Radiometer flown on the Large Probe of the Pioneer-Venus Multiprobe spacecraft. Radiance measurements of the Venusian atmosphere in spectral channels between 400 and 1800 nm as a function of altitude were made, along with elevation and azimuthal measurements of the radiation field performed with five optical channels. Filtered Si and Ge photovoltaic detector output currents were processed with logarithmic transimpedance converters prior to being multiplexed and digitized. Atmospheric sampling in elevation and azimuth was done according to a Gaussian integration scheme; the received data were used to determine the deposition of solar energy in the Venus atmosphere along with upward and downward fluxes and radiances with an altitude resolution of several hundred meters between 67 km and the surface.

Oscillator strength trends in group IV homologous ions

Shock-tube data are used to examine systematic f-value behavior in prominent visible transition arrays for the homologous emitter sequence Si-II, Ge-II, Sn-II, and Pb-II. Regularities found in these data are compared with trends in lighter elements. Agreements and disparities with theoretical and experimental oscillator strengths from existing literature are noted.

Breccias 73215 and 73255 - Siderophile and volatile trace elements

Fifteen siderophile and volatile trace elements (Os, Re, Ir, Pd, Ni, Au, Sb, Ge, Se, Ag, In, Zn, Cd, Bi, Tl) and U were determined by radiochemical neutron activation analysis in a spheroidal aphanitic clast and a clast of coarse-grained anorthositic gabbro from breccia 73215 and in three types of aphanite and two clasts of fine-grained anorthositic gabbro from breccia 73255. In common with most Apollo 17 fragment-laden melt rocks, the aphanites from 73215 and 73255 predominantly contain a Group 2 meteoritic component, which is apparently derived from the Serenitatis impact. All aphanitic lithologies contain the same meteoritic component, and are probably cogenetic. The clasts of fine-grained anorthositic gabbro contain substantial amounts (2% to 6% Cl equivalent based on Au) of a pre-Serenitatis Group 3 component. The clast of coarse-grained anorthositic gabbro is low in siderophile elements (0.4% Cl equivalent), and the meteoritic component (Group 5) is not well-defined. A strong correlation exists between Ir and Au in both the aphanites and the anorthositic gabbro clasts, which argues against the breccias 73215 and 73255 being open systems for Au

Lunar basalts and pristine highland rocks - Comparison of siderophile and volatile elements

The objective of the present paper is to compare pristine highland rocks and low-Ti mare basalts on the basis of all 53 Chicago analyses of these to types of rock. Apart from being of interest in its own right, such a comparison provides a test of Delano and Ringwood's (1979) contention that 'abundances of Ge, Au, and other siderophile elements in pristine highland rocks are not consistent with magmatic differentiation'. The other topics reexamined in this paper are the correlation of siderophiles and volatiles in pristine rocks with Rb and Cs (likewise questioned by Delano and Ringwood), the relationship of 'non-mare' basalts (14053, 60639) to their mare counterparts, and the abundance of some incompatible elements in the lunar bulk.

Pioneer Venus Sounder Probe Solar Flux Radiometer

The Solar Flux Radiometer aboard the Pioneer Venus Sounder Probe operated successfully during its descent through the atmosphere of Venus. The instrument measured atmospheric radiance over the spectral range from 400 to 1800 nm as a function of altitude. Elevation and azimuthal measurements on the radiation field were made with five optical channels. Twelve filtered Si and Ge photovoltaic detectors were maintained near 30 C with a phase-change material. The detector output currents were processed with logarithmic transimpedance converters and digitized with an 11-bit A/D converter. Atmospheric sampling in both elevation and azimuth was done according to a Gaussian integration scheme. The serial output data averaged 20 bits/sec, including housekeeping (sync, spin period, sample timing and mode). The data were used to determine the deposition of solar energy in the atmosphere of Venus between 67 km and the surface along with upward and downward fluxes and radiances with an altitude resolution of several hundred meters. The results allow for more accurate modeling of the radiation balance of the atmosphere than previously possible.

Determination of carrier concentration and compensation microprofiles in GaAs

Simultaneous microprofiling of semiconductor free carrier, donor, and acceptor concentrations was achieved for the first time from the absolute value of the free carrier absorption coefficient and its wavelength dependence determined by IR absorption in a scanning mode. Employing Ge- and Si-doped melt-grown GaAs, striking differences were found between the variations of electron concentration and those of ionized impurity concentrations. These results showed clearly that the electronic characteristics of this material are controlled by amphoteric doping and deviations from stoichiometry rather than by impurity segregation.

Chemical fractionations in meteorites. XI - C2 chondrites

Measurements of the compositions of 20 trace elements in the representative C2 chondrites Boriskino, Cold Bokkeveld, Erakot, Essebi, Haripura, Santa Cruz and Al Rais are reported. The contents of Ag, Au, Bi, Cd, Cs, Ge, In, Ir, Ni, Os, Pd, Rb, Re, Sb, Se, Sn, Te, Tl, U, and Zn were determined by radiochemical neutron activation analysis. The siderophile abundances of the C2 chondrites are found to be less uniform than those of other carbonaceous chondrites, while the C2R chondrite Al Rais is systematically lower in 12 volatiles than the C2M chondrites. Enrichment of Bi and Tl found in Erakot and Haripura indicate the possible presence of the late condensate mysterite. Volatile abundances are shown to agree with matrix contents for meteorites that have suffered little aqueous alteration, however to be 20-30% lower for the more altered meteorites. Finally, the decline of element abundance with volatility is shown to be consistent with the sigmoid curve explained by the two-component model.

Chemical classification of iron meteorites. IX - A new group /IIF/, revision of IAB and IIICD, and data on 57 additional irons

The paper discusses the chemical classification of independent iron meteorites which include 57 meteorites based on structural observations and concentrations of Ni, Ga, Ge, and Ir. Instrumental neutron activation analysis indicates that five previously studied irons with very high Ge/Ga ratios are compositionally closely related and can be gathered together as group IIF; a previously unstudied iron, Dehesa, has the highest Ge/Ga ratios known in an iron meteorite, a ratio 18 times higher than that in CI chondrites. In terms of Ge/Ga ratios and other properties, group IIF shows genetic links to the Eagle station pallasites and CO/CV chondrites. The iron with the highest Ni concentration, Oktibbeha County, is a member of group IAB, and it extends the concentration ranges of all elements in this nonmagnetic group.

Meteoritic material at four Canadian impact craters

Eleven impact melt and six basement rock samples from four craters were analyzed by neutron activation for Au, Co, Cr, Fe, Ge, Ir, Ni, Os, Pd, Re and Se. Wanapitei Lake, Ontario: the impact melts show uniform enrichments corresponding to 1-2% C1-chondrite material. Interelement ratios (Co/Cr, Ni/Cr, Ni/Ir) suggest that the impacting body was a C1-, C2-, or LL-chondrite. Nicholson Lake, North West Territory: Ni, Cr and Co are distinctly more enriched than Ir and Au which tentatively suggests an olivine-rich achondrite (nakhlite or ureilite). Gow Lake, Saskatchewan and Mistastin, Labrador: small enrichments in Ir and Ni; both the low Ir/Ni ratios and low Cr content suggest iron meteorites, but the signals are too weak for conclusive identification. A tentative comparison of meteoritic signatures at 10 large, greater than or equal to 4 km craters and their presumed celestial counterparts (13 Apollo and Amor asteroids) shows more irons and achondrites among known projectile types, and a preponderance of S-type objects, having no known meteoritic equivalent, among asteroids. It is not yet clear that these differences are significant, in view of the tentative nature of the crater identifications and the limited statistics.

Integrated infrared detector arrays for low-background astronomy

Existing integrated infrared detector array technology is being evaluated under low-background conditions to determine its applicability in orbiting astronomical applications where extended integration times and photometric accuracy are of interest. Preliminary performance results of a 1 x 20 elements InSb CCD array under simulated astronomical conditions are presented. Using the findings of these tests, improved linear- and area-array technology will be developed for use in NASA programs such as the Shuttle Infrared Telescope Facility. For wavelengths less than 30 microns, extrinsic silicon and intrinsic arrays with CCD readout will be evaluated and improved as required, while multiplexed arrays of Ge:Ga for wavelengths in the range 30 to 120 microns will be developed as fundamental understanding of this material improves. Future efforts will include development of improved drive and readout circuitry, and consideration of alternate multiplexing schemes.

High-efficiency concentration/multi-solar-cell system for orbital power generation

An analysis was performed to determine the economic feasibility of a concentrating spectrophotovoltaic orbital electrical power generation system. In this system dichroic beam-splitting mirrors are used to divide the solar spectrum into several wavebands. Absorption of these wavebands by solar cells with matched energy bandgaps increases the cell efficiency while decreasing the amount of heat which must be rejected. The optical concentration is performed in two stages. The first concentration stage employs a Cassegrain-type telescope, resulting in a short system length. The output from this stage is directed to compound parabolic concentrators which comprise the second stage of concentration. Ideal efficiencies for one-, two-, three-, and four-cell systems were calculated under 1000 sun, AMO conditions, and optimum energy bands were determined. Realistic efficiencies were calculated for various combinations of Si, GaAs, Ge and GaP. Efficiencies of 32 to 33 percent were obtained with the multicell systems. The optimum system consists of an f/3.5 optical system, a beam splitter to divide the spectrum at 0.9 microns, and two solar cell arrays, GaAs and Si.

Muon spin rotation research program

Data from cyclotron experiments and room temperature studies of dilute iron alloys and iron crystals under strain were analyzed. The Fe(Mo) data indicate that the effect upon the contact hyperfine field in Fe due to the introduction of Mo is considerably less than that expected from pure dilution, and the muon (+) are attracted to the Mo impurity sites. There is a significant change in the interstitial magnetic field with Nb concentration. The Fe(Ti) data, for which precession could clearly be observed early only at 468K and above, show that the Ti impurities are attractive to muon (+), and the magnitude of B(hf) is reduced far beyond the amount expected from pure dilution. Changes in the intersitital magnetic field with the introduction of Cr, W, Ge, and Si are also discussed. When strained to the elastic limit, the interstitial magnetic field in Fe crystals is reduced by 33 gauss, and the relaxation rate of the precession signal increases by 47%.

Supersonic cruise vehicle research/business jet

A comparison study of a GE-21 variable propulsion system with a Multimode Integrated Propulsion System (MMIPS) was conducted while installed in small M = 2.7 supersonic cruise vehicles with military and business jet possibilities. The 1984 state of the art vehicles were sized to the same transatlantic range, takeoff distance, and sideline noise. The results indicate the MMIPS would result in a heavier vehicle with better subsonic cruise performance. The MMIPS arrangement with one fan engine and two satellite turbojet engines would not be appropriate for a small supersonic business jet because of design integration penalties and lack of redundancy.

Float zone experiments

The objectives of this work are: to determine if surface tension-driven convection in float zone experiments may be controlled by means of surface films; and if convection can be controlled, determine whether homogeneous solute distributions will be achieved in float zone solidification and whether accurate measurements of liquid diffusion coefficients may be obtained from float zone solidification experiments. Sn was chosen as a model material because it is a group IV element, chemically similar to Si and Ge and its low melting point and low vapor pressure allow Auger spectroscopy to be employed with liquid samples.

Cryogenic switched MOSFET characterization

Both p channel and n channel enhancement mode MOSFETs can be readily switched on and off at temperatures as low as 2.8 K so that switch sampled readout of a VLWIR Ge:Ga focal plane is electronically possible. Noise levels as low as 100 rms electrons per sample (independent of sample rate) can be achieved using existing p channel MOSFETs, at overall rates up to 30,000 samples/second per multiplexed channel (e.g., 32 detectors at a rate of almost 1,000 frames/second). Run of the mill devices, including very low power dissipation n channel FETs would still permit noise levels of the order of 500 electrons/sample.

Comparison of different plate treatments and designs, an update

Nine packs of cells of different designs were put on test at Crane. They were run through their initial evaluation tests and then put into a cycling test. These were GE 12A h cells. The temperature was 20 C, the orbit was 90 minutes, the depth of discharge was 40%, the discharge rate was 9.6A and the initial charge rate was 9.6A to a voltage limit where it went into a taper. The goal was to get 100% return. The voltage limit was 1.453V through most of the testing, although recently it became necessary to lower some packs and raise some to hold 115% return. After one year, one cell from each pack was removed and the initial evaluation tests were repeated.

Need for high resolution in VUV Rydberg state spectroscopy

The paper emphasizes the necessity of high energy resolution (resolving powers greater than 100,000) in VUV spectroscopic determinations of atomic and molecular Rydberg electronic structures. Attention is given to spectral observations of Rydberg levels in Ge I near the 4p 2P(0)1/2 limit, in Sr I near the 4d 2D3/2 limit, and in diatomic hydrogen halides (especially H I) below the X2Pi3/2 limit.
