Stability analysis of Riccati covariance equations of Kalman filter.

The present paper takes the basic mathematical approach to analyze the stability of Riccati equations. First, a simple stability criterion like that of the linear constant coefficient system is sought for the nonlinear constant Riccati Equation. Then, a complete analysis on the limiting covariance P follows. The analysis is focussed on the main theorem. Finally, the computational aspects of the Riccati equations are analyzed with examples. The application of this analysis is to provide a simple stability criterion for the Kalman filter computation to test and predict filter convergence and thus modify filter parameters accordingly.

Bounding filter - A simple solution to lack of exact a priori statistics.

Wiener and Kalman-Bucy estimation problems assume that models describing the signal and noise stochastic processes are exactly known. When this modeling information, i.e., the signal and noise spectral densities for Wiener filter and the signal and noise dynamic system and disturbing noise representations for Kalman-Bucy filtering, is inexactly known, then the filter's performance is suboptimal and may even exhibit apparent divergence. In this paper a system is designed whereby the actual estimation error covariance is bounded by the covariance calculated by the estimator. Therefore, the estimator obtains a bound on the actual error covariance which is not available, and also prevents its apparent divergence.

New hardware realizations of nonrecursive digital filters.

Analysis of the bit-level operations involved in the convolution realizing a nonrecursive digital filter leads to hardware designs of digital filters based on the operation of counting. Two distinct designs are outlined: the first one is capable of very high speed but is rather expensive; the second is quite slow but has the advantages of low cost and high flexibility. The basic designs considered utilize fixed-point representation for the data and filter coefficients. Variants allowing floating-point representation of the coefficients are also described.

Coordinated adaptive filters for motion simulators.

A new approach to providing motion drive signals to a flight simulator utilizing coordinated adaptive filters is presented. Some motivation for the use of coordinated washout is discussed, along with conditions that determine the burden of coordination. The coordinated adaptive filters are derived, based on continuous steepest descent, and the application of the filters to simulated flight data is demonstrated.

Sequential filter design for precision orbit determination and physical constant refinement

Earth-based spacecraft tracking data have historically been processed with classical least squares filtering techniques both for navigation purposes and for physical constant determination. The small, stochastic nongravitational forces acting on the spacecraft are described to motivate the use of sequential estimation as an alternative to the least squares fitting procedures. The stochastic forces are investigated both in terms of their effect on the tracking data and their influence on estimation accuracy. A flexible sequential filter design which leaves the existing trajectory, variational equations, data observable and partial computations undisturbed is described. A detailed filter design is presented that meets the precision demands and flexibility requirements of deep space navigation and of scientific problems.

Far-infrared filters utilizing small particle scattering and antireflection coatings

High-transmission, low-pass scatter filters for blocking at wavelengths from 3.5 to 50 microns and single-layer antireflection coatings for optical materials used in the 25- to 300-micron region of the spectrum are described. The application of both techniques to liquid-He-cooled filters permits the construction of efficient low-pass and medium-width bandpass filters for use throughout the far infrared.

The effects of notch filters on the correlation properties of a PN signal

With wideband pseudo-noise (PN) communications systems, it is sometimes desirable to supplement the inherent interference rejection capabilities by adding notch filters to attenuate relatively narrowband interference. This correspondence presents an investigation of the effects of notch filters on the performance of PN correlation receivers. A theoretical analysis of the correlation drop due to filter distortion has been conducted and confirmed by experimentation. Additional measurements and analysis have established the trade-off between correlation drop and interference suppression as a function of interference bandwidth. A typical result is that by incurring a penalty of a 1-dB drop in correlation peak, interfering signals having bandwidths of 2 to 3% of the PN chip rate can be attenuated by 25 dB.

Development of a filter regeneration system for advanced spacecraft fluid systems

The development of a filter regeneration system for efficiently cleaning fluid particulate filters is presented. Based on a backflush/jet impingement technique, the regeneration system demonstrated a cleaning efficiency of 98.7 to 100%. The operating principles and design features are discussed with emphasis on the primary system components that include a regenerable filter, vortex particle separator, and zero-g particle trap. Techniques and equipment used for ground and zero-g performance tests are described. Test results and conclusions, as well as possible areas for commercial application, are included.

Optimum constrained image restoration filters

The filter was developed in Hilbert space by minimizing the radius of gyration of the overall or composite system point-spread function subject to constraints on the radius of gyration of the restoration filter point-spread function, the total noise power in the restored image, and the shape of the composite system frequency spectrum. An iterative technique is introduced which alters the shape of the optimum composite system point-spread function, producing a suboptimal restoration filter which suppresses undesirable secondary oscillations. Finally this technique is applied to multispectral scanner data obtained from the Earth Resources Technology Satellite to provide resolution enhancement. An experimental approach to the problems involving estimation of the effective scanner aperture and matching the ERTS data to available restoration functions is presented.

Solid state electro-optic color filter and iris

A pair of solid state electro-optic filters (SSEF) in a binocular holder were designed and fabricated for evaluation of field sequential stereo TV applications. The electronic circuitry for use with the stereo goggles was designed and fabricated, requiring only an external video input. A polarizing screen suitable for attachment to various size TV monitors for use in conjunction with the stereo goggles was designed and fabricated. An improved engineering model 2 filter was fabricated using the bonded holder technique developed previously and integrated to a GCTA color TV camera. An engineering model color filter was fabricated and assembled using PLZT control elements. In addition, a ruggedized holder assembly was designed, fabricated and tested. This assembly provides electrical contacts, high voltage protection, and support for the fragile PLZT disk, and also permits mounting and optical alignment of the associated polarizers.

Performance evaluation of tracking based on a low pass filter model

The performance of a human in a closed loop tracking task can be determined by using a simple low pass filter model with a least squares identification algorithm. The crossover model and the extended crossover model can be shown to be special cases of the low pass filter model presented here. Performance in tracking can be easily determined by mean square tracking error which can be written in terms of the parameters of the low pass filter model. A closed form expression for the effective time delay is also obtained. Experimental data from a roll axis tracking simulation is presented and simple prediction rules are determined. A comparison is made between this model and the crossover model with respect to their differences and similarities.

Drift in interference filters. I

Studies of narrow-band interference filters have shown that two mechanisms exist that cause drift to shorter wavelengths. One is dependent on the thermal history of the filter, and the other depends on the radiation history. The present paper presents experimental results on thermal effects; and it is shown that by a proper bake cycle, ZnS-cryolite filters are stable for years if stored at less than 38 C.

An optical filtering system for remote sensing of phytoplankton and suspended sediment

Aerial photography revealing blue-green Anacystis phytoplankton blooms in the Potomac River is presented. Data scanned were near-IR, green, and yellow nadir radiance; concurrent ground measurements are correlated with these data, including salinity, Secchi disk depth, chlorophyll a concentration, and river depth. In nonbloomed areas, R (radiance) is proportional to the reciprocal of Secchi depth for the green and yellow filters; in bloomed areas, R is constant for the green filter and random for the near-IR and yellow filters.

A prefiltering version of the Kalman filter with new numerical integration formulas for Riccati equations

A prefiltering version of the Kalman filter is derived for both discrete and continuous measurements. The derivation consists of determining a single discrete measurement that is equivalent to either a time segment of continuous measurements or a set of discrete measurements. This prefiltering version of the Kalman filter easily handles numerical problems associated with rapid transients and ill-conditioned Riccati matrices. Therefore, the derived technique for extrapolating the Riccati matrix from one time to the next constitutes a new set of integration formulas which alleviate ill-conditioning problems associated with continuous Riccati equations. Furthermore, since a time segment of continuous measurements is converted into a single discrete measurement, Potter's square root formulas can be used to update the state estimate and its error covariance matrix. Therefore, if having the state estimate and its error covariance matrix at discrete times is acceptable, the prefilter extends square root filtering with all its advantages, to continuous measurement problems.

Low-cost mechanical filters for OMEGA receivers

A pair of prototype low frequency mechanical filters were obtained for use as the RF front-end components of an OMEGA-VLF navigation receiver. The filter units are of interest because of very narrow bandwidths and high skirt selectivity to minimize noise and off-channel carriers in the reception of OMEGA signals. In addition, the filters have a characteristic low impedance of 75 to 5,000 ohms which results in less critical PC board circuitry compared to some previous resonators with termination resistances of 25,000 ohms to 5 megohms.

Fixed memory least squares filtering

Buxbaum has reported on three algorithms for computing least squares estimates that are based on fixed amounts of data. In this correspondence, the filter is arranged as a point-deleting Kalman filter concatenated with the standard point-inclusion Kalman filter. The resulting algorithm is couched in a square root framework for greater numerical stability, and special attention is given to computer implementation.
