A Range Compensating Feed Motion Concept for Spaceborne Radar

Tropical cyclones can cause major loss of both life and property, so that improvements in forecasting motion, intensity, and rainfall are needed. Such forecasting requires accurate measurements of the current state of the cyclone. Ground-based Doppler radars have long been used as an effective means of monitoring severe precipitating storms. Because of the oceanic nature of tropical cyclones, remote monitoring from space is desirable. Recently, the Precipitation Radar (PR) [1] aboard the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) [2] satellite has demonstrated an unprecedented capacity for 3-D imaging of precipitating storms. Nonetheless, due to the relatively long TRMM return cycle (less than once per day) the value of PR data has primarily been limited to the understanding of climatological properties of tropical cyclones [3]. The return cycle can be substantially reduced by sensing from a geostationary platform.

Synthetic feed-forward loop circuit boosts transgene expression in sugarcane

Bio-based products derived from natural plant-derived materials offer a promising alternative to petroleum-based products, which are essential for achieving global sustainability (Gupta et al. 2022). Sugarcane provides 40% of the world’s biofuel (Brant et al. 2025). Recently, metabolic engineering of sugarcane for hyperaccumulation of biomass oil is emerging as a strategy to elevate the crop’s energy content (Cao et al. 2023; Maitra et al. 2024). Synthetic transcription factors offer a powerful tool for modulating entire metabolic pathways by enabling fine-tuned activation or repression of specific genes (Liu and Stewart 2016; Hooghvorst and Altpeter 2023). However, the application of these technologies faces challenges, including the availability of well-characterized genetic building blocks for precise manipulation of gene expression, and the inherently challenging properties of gene expression in highly polyploid crops like sugarcane (Liu and Stewart 2016).

Site-specific field management adaptation is key to feeding the world in the 21st century

Rapid climate change and growing population threaten global food security across the globe. Several studies have proposed early planting, increased irrigation, and increased fertilizer applications as climate adaptation strategies, yet none have considered combined and site-specific field management strategies as a comprehensive solution. Here, we analyzed non-irrigated wheat yield responses to climate change and field management adaptation using a mechanistic crop model evaluated against observed global non-irrigated wheat-yield over 3-year intervals spanning 13 years at 3749 sites (RMSE = 36 gC m -2 ). Early planting with later-maturing varieties provided the most benefit to future yields among the proposed field management adaptation strategies. Improved water use efficiency from increased CO 2 led to relatively low benefits of additional irrigation. Here we estimated that spatially heterogeneous adaption strategies had the potential to improve global wheat yields by 91% by 2100 compared to the present day. The yield improvements from combined field adaptation strategies were larger than the sum of improvements from the individual strategies. These synergistic benefits were shown to result from complementary processes regulating nutrient and water uptake, physiological tolerance to heat stress, and internal carbon and nutrient cycling.
