Increasing Electric Vehicle Adoption Among Disadvantaged Populations: A Case Study in Los Angeles

In striving for 100% carbon-free energy by 2035, ensuring equitable access and benefits across all populations is crucial. The shift toward clean energy and sustainable transport involves numerous challenges, requiring collective efforts from various stakeholders to develop inclusive strategies and policies. This includes community engagement, equitable funding for technology, and expansion of programs to foster an equitable energy transition. Additionally, while cities have initiated incentive programs to promote electric vehicle (EV) adoption, the effectiveness of these programs in ensuring affordable EV ownership for disadvantaged communities is yet to be fully understood. This paper, using Los Angeles as a case study, highlights the importance of evaluating and refining these incentive programs to enhance EV accessibility for marginalized groups.

Data-Driven Prediction and Optimization of Energy Use for Transit Fleets of Electric and ICE Vehicles

Due to the high upfront cost of electric vehicles, many public transit agencies can afford only mixed fleets of internal combustion and electric vehicles. Optimizing the operation of such mixed fleets is challenging because it requires accurate trip-level predictions of electricity and fuel use as well as efficient algorithms for assigning vehicles to transit routes. We present a novel framework for the data-driven prediction of trip-level energy use for mixed-vehicle transit fleets and for the optimization of vehicle assignments, which we evaluate using data collected from the bus fleet of CARTA, the public transit agency of Chattanooga, TN. We first introduce a data collection, storage, and processing framework for system-level and high-frequency vehicle-level transit data, including domain-specific data cleansing methods. We train and evaluate machine learning models for energy prediction, demonstrating that deep neural networks attain the highest accuracy. Based on these predictions, we formulate the problem of minimizing energy use through assigning vehicles to fixed-route transit trips. We propose an optimal integer program as well as efficient heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms, demonstrating the scalability and performance of these algorithms numerically using the transit network of CARTA.

Variational Calculations of Ro-Vibrational Energy Levels and Transition Intensities for Tetratomic Molecules

A description is given of an algorithm for computing ro-vibrational energy levels for tetratomic molecules. The expressions required for evaluating transition intensities are also given. The variational principle is used to determine the energy levels and the kinetic energy operator is simple and evaluated exactly. The computational procedure is split up into the determination of one dimensional radial basis functions, the computation of a contracted rotational-bending basis, followed by a final variational step coupling all degrees of freedom. An angular basis is proposed whereby the rotational-bending contraction takes place in three steps. Angular matrix elements of the potential are evaluated by expansion in terms of a suitable basis and the angular integrals are given in a factorized form which simplifies their evaluation. The basis functions in the final variational step have the full permutation symmetries of the identical particles. Sample results are given for HCCH and BH3.

A shock-tube determination of the CN ground state dissociation energy and electronic transition moments for the CN violet and red band systems

The CN ground state dissociation energy and the sum of squares of the electronic transition moments of the CN violet bands have been simultaneously determined from spectral emission measurements behind incident shock waves. The unshocked test gases were composed of various CO2-CO-N2-Ar mixtures, and the temperatures behind the incident shocks ranged from 3500 to 8000 K. The variation of the electronic transition moment with internuclear separation was found to be small for both the CN violet and red band systems.

Renewable Energy Systems in the Transition of North America to Net Zero Emissions

The North American transition to low-carbon energy sources depends on the technology decisions of its diverse communities and stakeholders. Each region and industry will have its own portfolio of renewable energy technologies to meet the common goal of net zero emissions. Our presentation will share integrated renewable energy solutions being explored at scale by major U.S cities, rural regions dependent on oil and gas, and industries redefining their infrastructure and their missions. Case examples will be presented on: the Los Angeles 100% renewable energy goals; challenges and opportunities of decarbonizing and reducing emissions from the oil and gas industry; repurposing oil and gas infrastructure such as using pipelines for hydrogen blends and renewable natural gas and idle wells for geothermal energy and energy storage; treatment of produced water using renewable energy for agriculture applications; and the preserving water and agricultural resources in the transition to renewable energy. Key challenges will also be discussed, including resilience to increasing disasters, stranded assets, unequal community impact, and meeting the last 5-20% of energy with renewable energy.

Energy balance in the solar transition region. II - Effects of pressure and energy input on hydrostatic models

The radiation of energy by hydrogen lines and continua in hydrostatic energy-balance models of the transition region between the solar chromosphere and corona is studied using models which assume that mechanical or magnetic energy is dissipated in the hot corona and is then transported toward the chromosphere down the steep temperature gradient of the transition region. These models explain the average quiet sun and also the entire range of variability of the Ly-alpha lines. The relations between the downward energy flux, the pressure of the transition region, and the different hydrogen emission are described.

Electric Vehicles, Biofuels, and Transitions in Transportation Energy

The decarbonization of power sources for light duty transportation is moving towards the use of renewable energies, biofuels, and electric vehicles. Currently there are three major light transportation fuels: gasoline (US gasoline is 98% E10), biofuels (E85), and electricity. Currently fuel ethanol in biofuels is obtained principally from corn in the US and sugarcane in Brazil with a small amount from cellulose. The transition to alternative fuels has been occurring since 1980, although light transportation still relies on gasoline. The rise of battery electric vehicles (BEV) is now beginning to offset internal combustion engines (ICE), while recent advances in biotechnology and integrated plant design have enhanced the economic feasibility of cellulosic biofuels. This paper explores the potential role of these fuels in reducing the carbon footprint associated with light transportation. We compare three different cases: Gasoline, E85 and full electric based on the Argonne AFLEET tool to calculate generation of greenhouse gases due to manufacturing and operation of BEV and ICE cars, respectively, in the US assuming an average useful automobile life of 200,000 miles or 12 years. We concluded that significant liquid fuel use (both renewable and non-renewable) will continue for the next 50 years. Here, renewable liquid fuels have an important role to play as the transportation sector transitions from petroleum to other energy sources.

Structural dynamics of the renewable energy economy: A longitudinal input-output insights for a resilient transition

As countries accelerate their energy transitions, understanding how renewable energy (RE) systems structurally integrate into national economies is essential. This study presents a longitudinal economic input-output (EIO) analysis of the renewable energy sector in South Korea from 2016 to 2022. We develop a novel EIO-based framework that disaggregates the RE sector both by energy source (thermal, hydro, nuclear and renewable) and by industrial function (manufacturing, generation, and services), allowing for a detailed assessment of production dynamics, value-added creation, and import dependency. By quantifying backward and forward linkages and induced economic effects, the analysis reveals persistent structural vulnerabilities in renewable manufacturing and increasing sectoral interdependencies. Results reveal that while the renewable energy sector's production and value-added shares have increased, critical segments remain highly import-dependent, particularly in equipment manufacturing. The analysis highlights systemic gaps in domestic supply chain resilience and offers sector-specific insights for reducing vulnerability and enhancing energy security. Although applied to South Korea as a case study, the proposed framework is designed to be transferable to other national contexts where renewable energy planning requires economic structural insights. The findings offer policy-relevant guidance for enhancing domestic energy resilience and aligning industrial strategy with long-term decarbonization goals.

High-Dimensional Data-Driven Energy Optimization for MultiModal Transit Agencies

Transportation accounts for 28% of the total energy use in the United States and as such, it is responsible for immense environmental impact, including urban air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and may pose a severe threat to energy security. As we encourage mode shift from personal vehicles to public transit, it is important to consider that public transit systems still require substantial amounts of energy; for example, public bus transit services in the U.S. are responsible for at least 19.7 million metric tons of CO 2 emission annually. As such it is absolutely crucial that we study the bottlenecks to energy efficiency in public transit and develop new algorithms that can help the public transit agencies, especially those that are still operating mixed fleets, which may consist of Electric vehicles (EVs), hybrids (HEVs), and internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs), optimize the operations by deciding which vehicles are assigned to serving which transit trips.
