Mixing-Controlled CI Combustion and Fuel-Effects Research

This project is focused on developing advanced combustion strategies for mixing-controlled compressionignition (i.e., diesel-cycle) engines that are synergistic with renewable and/or unconventional fuels in a manner that enhances domestic energy security, economic competitiveness, and environmental quality. During this reporting period, the focus was on ducted fuel injection (DFI), a technology that differs from conventional diesel combustion (CDC) in that it involves injecting fuel along the axis of one or more small cylindrical ducts within the combustion chamber. Each duct performs a function similar to the tube on a Bunsen burner, helping to premix the fuel with the charge-gas before ignition, creating a stable flame that forms little to no soot. The purpose of the work conducted during Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 was to begin determining the extent to which the use of oxygenated fuels, when combined with DFI and charge-gas dilution, can simultaneously lower the soot and nitrogen-oxides (N0 x ) emissions from mixing-controlled compression-ignition engines, and what the corresponding impacts on other regulated emissions and efficiency are likely to be.

Pitka's Point/St. Mary's Wind Energy Construction Project. Final report

This is the final report for the St. Mary’s/Pitka’s Point Wind Construction Project. Under the project Alaska Village Electric Cooperative, Inc. (AVEC) constructed and commissioned one new 900 kW-capacity wind turbine at a site in Pitka’s Point about 4 miles from the diesel-fired prime power plant in St. Mary’s. The main objective of this project is to generate electric power from a renewable resource in an effort to reduce the local dependency on fuel oil as the sole source of electric power generation. The wind generator’s output augments the prime source generation provided by the diesel-powered generators.

Market Opportunities for Deployable Wind Systems for Defense and Disaster Response

This report is the first public deliverable from the Defense and Disaster Deployable Turbine project, funded through the distributed wind portfolio of the U.S. Department of Energy Wind Energy Technologies Office. The objective of the project is to explore the opportunity for deployable turbine technologies to meet the operational energy needs of the U.S. military and global disaster response efforts. This report provides a market assessment that was conducted over a year using public reports, presentations at topical conferences, and direct stakeholder engagement interviews with both military and industry representatives. It begins with the high- level operational energy strategy of the Department of Defense that provides the context for alternatives to diesel fuel to meet energy needs. The report then provides an estimate of the energy use of the military in missions where a deployable turbine could potentially serve as an alternative to the baseline use of diesel fuel in generators to provide electricity in remote locations. An overview of domestic and international disaster response is provided with a focus on the role of the military in providing energy to those events. Finally, the report summarizes the technical considerations that would enable a deployable turbine to meet military and disaster response energy needs including the global wind resource, the technical design of the turbine, and the operational constraints of various military missions.

Financial Analysis of Battery Electric Transit Buses

A baseline bus fleet and battery electric bus investment scenario was developed based on the average or common parameters of existing battery electric bus (BEB) fleets. A discounted cashflow analysis was done that found the baseline fleet to have a net present value of $785,000 and simple payback of 3.3 years. The 33 main parameters were then swung ±50% to determine their relative influence on NPV and were ranked accordingly. Then parameter volatility was estimated by dividing the range of observed values by the baseline value. The parameters that are most influential and volatile were highlighted as the ones fleet managers should focus on when determining if BEBs are a good investment option for them. These top parameters are 1) BEB purchase price, 2) purchase price of foregone diesel bus, 3) grant amount, 4) maintenance costs of foregone diesel bus, 5) annual vehicle miles traveled.

On-Road Heavy-Duty Low-NOx Technology Cost Study

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) conducted a cost analysis for emission control technologies under contract to the California Air Resources Board (CARB). CARB sought incremental cost analysis for emission control technologies for on-road heavy-duty (HD) engines, used in vehicle greater than 14,000 pounds (lbs) gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) to achieve oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions rates significantly lower than those required by current emissions standards. Specifically, incremental costs (without any retail price mark-up) were estimated for representative diesel, natural gas, and gasoline engine and emission aftertreatment systems that were selected to represent potential technology packages that could achieve 0.02 grams per brake horsepower hour (g/bhp-hr) NOx on certification test cycles, including a proposed updated certification test cycle that includes additional low load operating conditions. NREL surveyed stakeholders including industry association groups, Tier 1 suppliers, and engine original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to estimate incremental direct and indirect costs. Incremental costs were considered for current engine full useful life (FUL) definitions, as well as with proposed increased FUL and warranty period. The incremental costs were subsequently incorporated in life-cycle cost analyses examining the incremental engine and aftertreatment costs along with life-cycle costs over the various engine FUL scenarios. Life-cycle costs analysis included the incremental upfront cost, fuel consumption changes (changes in fuel economy), diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) consumption changes, and the maximum FUL of the aftertreatment package (major overhaul intervals).
