Biased Spin-State Energetics of Fe(II) Molecular Complexes within Density-Functional Theory and the Linear-Response Hubbard U Correction

The spin-state energetics of six Fe(II) molecular complexes are computed using the linear-response Hubbard U approach within DFT. The adiabatic energy differences, ΔE H-L , between the high-spin (S = 2) and the low-spin (S = 0) states are computed and compared with accurate-coupled cluster-corrected CASPT2 results. We show that DFT+U fails in correctly capturing the ground state for strong-field ligands yielding ΔE H-L that are almost constant throughout the molecular series. This bias toward high spin together with the metal/ligand charge transfer upon U correction are here quantified and explained using molecular orbital diagrams involving both σ- and π-bonding interactions. Furthermore, with increasing ligand-field strengths this bias also increases owing to the stronger molecular character of the metal/ligand Kohn–Sham orbitals thus resulting in large deviations from the reference larger than 4 eV. Smaller values of U can be employed to mitigate this effect and recover the right energetics.

Sparse-Stochastic Fragmented Exchange for Large-Scale Hybrid Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Calculations

Here we extend our recently developed sparse-stochastic fragmented exchange formalism for ground-state near-gap hybrid DFT to calculate absorption spectra within linear-response time-dependent generalized Kohn-Sham DFT (LR-GKS-TDDFT) for systems consisting of thousands of valence electrons within a grid-based/plane-wave representation. A mixed deterministic/fragmented-stochastic compression of the exchange kernel, here using long-range explicit exchange functionals, provides an efficient method for accurate optical spectra. Both real-time propagation as well as frequency-resolved Casida-equation-type approaches for spectra are presented, and the method is applied to large molecular dyes.

Excited State Orbital Optimization via Minimizing the Square of the Gradient: General Approach and Application to Singly and Doubly Excited States via Density Functional Theory

We present a general approach to converge excited state solutions to any quantum chemistry orbital optimization process, without the risk of variational collapse. The resulting square gradient minimization (SGM) approach only requires analytic energy/Lagrangian orbital gradients and merely costs 3 times as much as ground state orbital optimization (per iteration), when implemented via a finite difference approach. SGM is applied to both single determinant ΔSCF and spin-purified restricted open-shell Kohn-Sham (ROKS) approaches to study the accuracy of orbital optimized DFT excited states. It is found that SGM can converge challenging states where the maximum overlap method (MOM) or analogues either collapse to the ground state or fail to converge. We also report that ΔSCF/ROKS predict highly accurate excitation energies for doubly excited states (which are inaccessible via TDDFT). Singly excited states obtained via ROKS are also found to be quite accurate, especially for Rydberg states that frustrate (semi)local TDDFT. Our results suggest that orbital optimized excited state DFT methods can be used to push past the limitations of TDDFT to doubly excited, charge-transfer, or Rydberg states, making them a useful tool for the practical quantum chemist's toolbox for studying excited states in large systems.
