Radiation Therapy–Induced Changes of the Nasopharyngeal Commensal Microbiome in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Patients

The human commensal microbiome has been suggested to be involved in the regulation of response to anticancer therapies. However, little is known regarding changes in commensal microbes in patients with cancer during radiation therapy. We conducted a prospective, longitudinal proof-of-concept cohort study with patients with newly diagnosed nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) who underwent radiation therapy-based treatment.

Primary Mediastinal B Cell Lymphoma in the Positron-Emission Tomography Era Executive Summary of the American Radium Society Appropriate Use Criteria

Primary mediastinal B cell lymphoma (PMBCL) is a highly curable subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that is diagnosed predominantly in adolescents and young adults. Consequently, long-term treatment-related morbidity is critical to consider when devising treatment strategies that include different chemoimmunotherapy strategies with or without radiation therapy. Furthermore, adaptive approaches using the end-of-chemotherapy (EOC) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) scanning may help to determine which patients may benefit from additional therapies. We aimed to develop evidence-based guidelines for treating these patients.

The Modernization of Radiation Therapy Services in Cambodia: A Model of International Collaboration

Cambodia is a Southeast Asian low-middle-income country with a population of >15 million. In 2020, Cambodia was estimated to have 18,375 new diagnoses of cancer and 12,638 deaths attributable to cancer. Cambodia was estimated to have a deficit of 16 megavoltage machines in 2012. Cambodia's radiation therapy services have suffered through the tumultuous events of the country's history, with intermittent services until the last decade. In recent years, Cambodia has undergone rapid economic growth and, with this, the development of its first comprehensive cancer center, the National Cancer Centre (NCC).

Dose Escalated Radiation Therapy for Glioblastoma Multiforme: An International Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of 22 Prospective Trials

Limited evidence is available on the utility of dose-escalated radiation therapy (DE-RT) with or without temozolomide (TMZ) versus standard-of-care radiation therapy (SoC-RT) for patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma multiforme. We performed a systematic review/meta-analysis to compare overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) between DE-RT and SoC-RT.

Differential Impact of COVID-19 on Cancer Diagnostic Services Based on Body Regions: A Public Facility-Based Study in Hong Kong

A reduction in cancer services during the coronavirus disease of 2019 pandemic has affected cancer diagnoses. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively determine the impact on cancer diagnostic service in public facilities across Hong Kong. Quantifying the temporal changes in the number of cancer diagnoses before, during, and after the outbreak is useful to establish the scale of the problem and assess if there has been an adequate level of response.

Practice Consolidation Among U.S. Radiation Oncologists Over Time

Health care practices across the United States have been consolidating in response to various market forces. The degree of practice consolidation varies widely across specialties but has not been well studied within radiation oncology. This study used Medicare data to characterize the extent of practice consolidation among radiation oncologists and to investigate associated market factors.

Polysulfide-incompatible additive suppresses spatial reaction heterogeneity of Li-S batteries

Rational electrolyte engineering for practical pouch cells remains elusive because the correlation between the cathode/solid-electrolyte interphase layer and cell-level reaction behavior is poorly understood. Here, by combining multiscale characterization and computational modeling, we show that—counter to the conventional perception of polysulfide-incompatible additives—the spontaneous reaction of sparingly solvated polysulfides with Lewis acid additives (LAAs) can induce in situ formation of a homogeneous interphase on thick and tortuous S cathode. Multiscale synchrotron X-ray characterization consistently affirms that such interface design could effectively eliminate the notorious problems of polysulfide shuttle and lithium corrosion and, more importantly, provide an interconnected “ion transport highway” to alleviate the uneven ion transport within the tortuous S cathode. Hence, this design dramatically reduces the reaction heterogeneity of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) pouch cells under lean electrolyte conditions. Further, this work resolves controversy around the role of polysulfide-incompatible additives in high-energy Li-S pouch cells and highlights the importance of suppressing reaction heterogeneity for practical batteries.

MIER3 induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition and promotes breast cancer cell aggressiveness via forming a co-repressor complex with HDAC1/HDAC2/Snail

Highlights: • The expression of MIER3 was correlated with poor outcome of breast cancer patients. • MIER3 induced EMT and promoted cell migration. • MIER3 interacted with HDAC1/HDAC2 and Snail to form a repressive complex. • The repressive complex bound to E-cadherin promoter and reduced its acetylation. Breast cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers and the leading cause of cancer death in women. MIER3 (Mesoderm induction early response 1, family member3) is considered as a potential oncogene for breast cancer. However, the role of MIER3 in breast cancer remain largely unknown. The expression of MIER3 was detected and the relationship between its expression and clinicopathological characteristics was also analyzed. The effect of MIER3 on proliferation and migration of breast cancer cells was detected in vitro and in vivo. Western blot, IF, and Co-IP were employed to detect the relationship between MIER3, HDAC1, HDAC2, and Snail. ChIP assay was performed to determine the binding of MIER3/HDAC1/HDAC2/Snail complex to the promoter of E-cadherin. In this study, we found that MIER3 was upregulated in breast cancer tissue and closely associated with poor prognosis of patients. MIER3 could promote the proliferation, migration, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of breast cancer cells. Further studies showed that MIER3 interacted with HDAC1/HDAC2 and Snail to form a repressive complex which could bind to E-cadherin promoter and was related to its deacetylation. Our study concluded that MIER3 was involved in forming a co-repressor complex with HDAC1/HDAC2/Snail to promote EMT by silencing E-cadherin.

Lithium inventory tracking as a non-destructive battery evaluation and monitoring method

Tracking the active lithium (Li) inventory in an electrode shows the true state of a Li battery, akin to a fuel gauge for an engine. However, non-destructive Li inventory tracking is currently unavailable. Here, in this work, we used the theoretical capacity of a transition metal oxide to convert capacity into a Li inventory analysis. The Li inventory in electrodes was tracked reliably to show how battery formulations and test methods affect performance. Contrary to capacity, Li inventory tracking reveals stoichiometric variations near the electrode–electrolyte interface. Verifiable results rationalized differences in measurements, clarifying and reducing interferences from cell formulations and experimental manipulations. By tracing four variables from formation to end-of-life, we characterize electrode and cell performance with a thermodynamic framework. Accurate rationalization of subtle differences in Li inventory utilization promises precise battery engineering, evaluation, failure analysis and risk mitigation. The method could be applicable from cell design optimization and fabrication to battery management, improving battery performance and reliability.
