Large aperture deformable mirror with a transferred single-crystal silicon membrane actuated using large-stroke PZT Unimorph Actuators

We have demonstrated a large aperture (50 mm x 50 mm) continuous membrane deformable mirror (DM) with a large-stroke piezoelectric unimorph actuator array. The DM consists of a continuous, large aperture, silicon membrane 'transferred' in its entirety onto a 20 x 20 piezoelectric unimorph actuator array. A PZT unimorph actuator, 2.5 mm in diameter with optimized PZT/Si thickness and design showed a deflection of 5.7 [m at 20V. An assembled DM showed an operating frequency bandwidth of 30 kHz and influence function of approximately 30%.

Model Deformation Measurements by Stereo Photogrammetry at NASA Ames Research Center

At this meeting I will present an overview of tests where my AOX colleagues and I used stereo photogrammetry to measure model deformations. I will discuss in greater detail two recent tests: the Transonic Truss-Braced Wing in the 11x11 ft TWT and a Rotor in Forward Flight in the LaRC 14x22 ft WT. I will conclude with a discussion of lessons learned and future plans.

Effects of Cr and Nb Alloying Additions on High Temperature Creep Deformation of Ni-Based Superalloys

Micro-twinning is the major creep deformation mechanism in Ni-based superalloys at temperatures above 700 C°. Recent experiments suggest that superlattice stacking faults in phase may serve as the precursors to twin formation. Segregation of alloying elements to these precursors may have a significant effect on formation and extension of micro-twins. Using atomistic modeling we investigate and explain the effects of Cr and Nb alloying additions on these processes. We consider the experimentally obtained creep curves for several Ni-based superalloys with different elemental compositions and relate the observed trends to the simulation results presented in this study. Our results help to rationalize the experimentally observed puzzling effects of elemental composition of the alloy on creep resistance.

Modeling Deformable Linear Objects for Autonomous Robotic Outfitting of Lunar Surface Systems

The construction of in-space facilities is a significant capability for the establishment of a long-term human presence in space. Autonomous robotic technologies are a critical tool to enabling the construction and maintenance of such permanent facilities. This paper evaluates the outfitting portion of the construction process, focusing on modeling required for robotic manipulation of cable-like objects, referred to as Deformable Linear Objects (DLOs). DLOs contain a high degree of variability, which makes accurate real-time autonomous operations a difficult task. Different modeling methods for DLOs such as discrete mass-spring systems and Cosserat elastic rod models range in problem complexity and accuracy, a trade-off that must be understood to fully realize autonomous cable routing technologies. This paper validates different DLO models through simulation and a hardware experiment, highlighting the size of the state space and accuracy of different approaches. The development of DLO manipulation models for outfitting enables an autonomous architecture for the construction of lunar surface systems.

Testing device subjects elastic materials to biaxial deformations

Testing device stretches elastic materials biaxially over large deformation ranges and varies strain ratios in two perpendicular directions. The device is used in conjunction with a tensile testing machine, which holds the specimen and permits control over the direction and magnitude of the stresses applied.

Polymer deformation gage measures thickness change in tensile tests

Lightweight deformation gage attached to a polymer specimen determines the thickness changes undergone by the specimen during the testing of its tensile and elongation properties. Mechanical noise from outside sources is dampened when the assembly is hung on a light rubber band.

Tantalum alloys resist creep deformation at elevated temperatures

Dispersion-strengthened tantalum-base alloys possess high strength and good resistance to creep deformation at elevated temperatures in high vacuum environments. They also have ease of fabrication, good weldability, and corrosion resistance to molten alkali metals.
