Color contrasts in Mare Nubium and the Southern Oceanus Procellarum, part V

The distribution of subtle but definite color variations on the lunar surface is analyzed using Apollo 16 photographs. Results show the strongest color variations and most distinct boundaries are concentrated in the northwest quadrant of the moon, where major boundaries correspond with distal fronts of a complex and prominent series of lava flows.

Influence of the atmosphere on spectral radiance and contrasts of natural formations measured from space

The method of transfer functions is discussed that enable the elimination of atmospheric effects from spectral photometric data measured from spacecraft. Soyuz 7, 9 and Salyut spacecraft data were used. The results made it possible to estimate the variations in the transfer functions in the visible spectral region depending on the albedo of the underlying surface both for the uniform surfaces and near the boundary between two uniform underlying surfaces.

Study of SEM induced current and voltage contrast modes to assess semiconductor reliability

The purpose of the scanning electron microscopy study was to review the failure history of existing integrated circuit technologies to identify predominant failure mechanisms, and to evaluate the feasibility of their detection using SEM application techniques. The study investigated the effects of E-beam irradiation damage and contamination deposition rates; developed the necessary methods for applying the techniques to the detection of latent defects and weaknesses in integrated circuits; and made recommendations for applying the techniques.

Application of remote sensing in South Dakota to provide accurate inventories of agricultural crops, enhance contrast in photographic products, monitor rangeland habitat loss, map Aspen, and prepare hydrogeologic surveys

The author has identified the following significant results. Digital analysis of LANDSAT CCT's indicated that two discrete spectral background zones occurred among the five soil zone. K-CLASS classification of corn revealed that accuracy increased when two background zones were used, compared to the classification of corn stratified by five soil zones. Selectively varying film type developer and development time produces higher contract in reprocessed imagery. Interpretation of rangeland and cropped land data from 1968 aerial photography and 1976 LANDSAT imagery indicated losses in rangeland habitat. Thermal imagery was useful in locating potential sources of sub-surface water and geothermal energy, estimating evapotranspiration, and inventorying the land.

C1 chondrites - Comparison and contrast to other meteorite types

The minerals of chondritic meteorites, particularly C2 and C3 are usually believed to be condensates of the (previously unfractionated) solar nebula. This implies two postulates: (1) that chemical reactions between phases ceased at various temperatures; and (2) that Ni and Fe were mobilized by diffusion in the solid state. An alternate explanation is proposed, which obviates the two postulates: chondritic minerals may have condensed, in equilibrium with their own vapors, from a fraction already separated from the solar nebula at low temperature and low pressure.

The Procellarum volcanic complexes - Contrasting styles of volcanism

Three major volcanic complexes have long been recognized in the Oceanus Procellarum region. Detailed study shows that the complexes share some characteristics and also display major differences which provide clues to eruption style. The Rumker Hills occupy 5000 sq km in northern Procellarum and are apparently Imbrian-Eratosthenian in age; they are dominated by domes, suggesting relatively low effusion rates. The Aristarchus Plateau-Prinz/Harbinger region occupies 40,000 sq km in central Procellarum and is predominantly Imbrian in age; it is dominated by large sinuous rilles and associated dark mantling deposits of probable pyroclastic origin, suggesting relatively high eruption rates. The Marius Hills occupy 35,000 sq km in south-central Procellarum and appear to be predominantly Eratosthenian in age; they are dominated by low domes, steep domes, cones, and sinuous rilles, suggesting variable eruption rates and possible different volatile contents associated with eruption conditions that produced each type of feature. The volcanic complexes, particularly Aristarchus and Marius, appear to be the sources for much of the central Procellarum mare fill.

Apodization and image contrast

Apodization is often defined in a restricted sense as the suppression of the outer parts (i.e., the concentric rings) of wave optical point images, which results in a higher relative concentration of energy in the central image area. In a wider sense, apodization is defined as any modification of the transmission distribution across the aperture. Generally the modulation transfer function (MTF) is not used in the treatment of apodization. To see how the imaging performance is modified, the MTF is introduced into the discussion. Besides the constant transmission, two transmission distributions which are functions of the aperture radius are considered.

Multispectral histogram normalization contrast enhancement

A multispectral histogram normalization or decorrelation enhancement which achieves effective color composites by removing interband correlation is described. The enhancement procedure employs either linear or nonlinear transformations to equalize principal component variances. An additional rotation to any set of orthogonal coordinates is thus possible, while full histogram utilization is maintained by avoiding the reintroduction of correlation. For the three-dimensional case, the enhancement procedure may be implemented with a lookup table. An application of the enhancement to Landsat multispectral scanning imagery is presented.

Image Properties of an X-Ray Telescope of the Wolter-1 Type with Emphasis on Contrast Reduction by Diffuse Reflection

Theoretical and experimental results are presented on the geometrical-optic imaging properties of a Wolter-1 type paraboloid-hyperboloid X-ray telescope. Particular consideration is given to the effect of microroughness of the mirror on the imaging properties. Experiments were conducted in which scattering properties were determined as a function of wavelength, incidence angle, and roughness of the plane mirrors. Results indicate the need for optimization of mirror material and polishing technology as well as the development of improved mirror manufacturing techniques. The use of transmission gratings along with the Wolter-1 type telescope in spectroscopy applications is discussed.

Albedo and color contrasts on asteroid surfaces

Asteroids in general display only small or negligible variations in spectrum or albedo during a rotational cycle. Color variations with rotation are described in the literature but are usually comparable to the noise in the measurements. Twenty-four asteroids have been systematically monitored for such color changes. Only 3 Juno, 4 Vesta, 6 Hebe, 71 Niobe, 349 Dembowska, and 944 Hidalgo display color variations larger than 0.03 mag. In each of these cases the asteroid appears redder near maximum brightness. Of seven asteroids monitored polarimetrically, only 4 Vesta shows a convincing variation, attributed to an albedo change with rotation. The lightcurve can be explained by albedo differences alone; Vesta apparently has a nearly spheroidal shape. Nothwithstanding the above results, the degree of uniformity of most asteroid surfaces is remarkable. If asteroids exist with large discrete domains of ferrosilicate, metallic, and/or carbonaceous material together on their surfaces, they have not yet been identified.
