Mission concepts for Venus surface investigation

Mission concepts for the in situ investigation of the Venus atmosphere and surface in the period following the VOIR mission are discussed. The science issues in Venus exploration and possible means of meeting the scientific objectives are considered, including global mapping, surface composition determination, atmospheric composition determination and surface-atmosphere interactions. Particular attention is then given to the feasibility of buoyant stations for atmospheric observation, balloon-tether combinations for surface observations, and the active thermal control by a reversed Brayton cycle or a vapor compression cycle of a long-lived Venus lander. Of the concepts examined, it is found that only the balloon-tether system would be impractical for the mission outlined for it, while the other two concepts appear feasible.

Applications of a new mass-driver concept

A description of the operating principles and requirements of a novel mass-driver concept is presented. The design obtains acceleration of payload bucket coils by means of transverse focussing from strong, off-axis restoring forces that are produced by drive coils operating in a 'pull-only' mode. The concept offers the unprecedented possibility of operating high-performance mass-drivers entirely within the limitations of existing commercial switching devices, such as silicon-controlled rectifiers, spark gaps, vacuum-triggered arcs or vacuum mechanical switches. Representative applications of the concept described are: (1) a large-diameter magnetic lunar launcher for payloads having autonomous maneuvering; (2) an intermediate-diameter launcher with long operational life; and (3) a reaction engine for orbit transfer of large, massive objects.

Emerging SPS Concepts

Four technologies were evaluated to determine their effect on Satellite Power System concepts. Two of these technologies, solid-state power amplifiers and magnetrons, are replacements for the Klystrons used for dc to RF conversion on the satellite. A third technology, laser power transmission, transmits the energy at laser frequencies rather than microwave frequencies. The fourth technology, multibandgap solar cells, has the promise of significantly increased solar to dc conversion efficienty as compared to the reference-concept silicon and gallium arsenide solar cells. The design characteristics of concepts resulting from application of these technologies are summarized.

Crashworthy airframe design concepts: Fabrication and testing

Crashworthy floor concepts applicable to general aviation aircraft metal airframe structures were investigated. Initially several energy absorbing lower fuselage structure concepts were evaluated. Full scale floor sections representative of a twin engine, general aviation airplane lower fuselage structure were designed and fabricated. The floors featured an upper high strength platform with an energy absorbing, crushable structure underneath. Eighteen floors were fabricated that incorporated five different crushable subfloor concepts. The floors were then evaluated through static and dynamic testing. Computer programs NASTRAN and KRASH were used for the static and dynamic analysis of the floor section designs. Two twin engine airplane fuselages were modified to incorporate the most promising crashworthy floor sections for test evaluation.

Concept definition and aerodynamic technology studies for single-engine V/STOL fighter/attack aircraft

The results obtained in the early stages of a research program to develop aerodynamic technology for single-engine V/STOL fighter/attack aircraft projected for the post-1990 period are summarized. This program includes industry studies jointly sponsored by NASA and the Navy. Four contractors have identified promising concepts featuring a variety of approaches for providing propulsive lift. Vertical takeoff gross weights range from about 10,000 to 13,600 kg (22,000 to 30,000 lb). The aircraft have supersonic capability, are highly maneuverable, and have significant short takeoff overload capability. The contractors have estimated the aerodynamics and identified aerodynamic uncertainties associated with their concepts. Wind-tunnel research programs will be formulated to investigate these uncertainties. A description of the concepts is emphasized.

Concepts for an optimized Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror module for a high throughput LAMAR facility

Alternative concepts are proposed for the design and fabrication of Kirkpartick-Baez nested crossed plate reflectors applicable to a high throughput, moderate resolution X-ray facility composed of a Large Area Modular Array of Reflectors (LAMAR). Numerical, structural and optical analyses are used to quantify the performance characteristics of the concepts proposed. It is found that the theoretical performance of certain concepts approaches the 0.2-min resolution of a perfect parabola of translation. The instrument under consideration has about 1000 sq cm of effective area, or five times greater area than that of the Einstein Observatory.

Communicating remote sensing concepts in an interdisciplinary environment

Although remote sensing is currently multidisciplinary in its applications, many of its terms come from the engineering sciences, particularly from the field of pattern recognition. Scholars from fields such as the social sciences, botany, and biology, may experience initial difficulty with remote sensing terminology, even though parallel concepts exist in their own fields. Some parallel concepts and terminologies from nonengineering fields, which might enhance the understanding of remote sensing concepts in an interdisciplinary situation are identified. Feedbacks which this analogue strategy might have on remote sensing itself are explored.

Design and evaluation of low-cost laminated wood composite blades for intermediate size wind turbines: Blade design, fabrication concept, and cost analysis

As part of a program to reduce wind turbine costs, an evaluation was conducted of a laminated wood composite blade for the Mod-OA 200 kW wind turbine. The effort included the design and fabrication concept for the blade, together with cost and load analyses. The blade structure is composed of laminated Douglas fir veneers for the primary spar and nose sections, and honeycomb cored plywood panels for the trailing edges sections. The attachment of the wood blade to the rotor hub was through load takeoff studs bonded into the blade root. Tests were conducted on specimens of the key structural components to verify the feasibility of the concept. It is concluded that the proposed wood composite blade design and fabrication concept is suitable for Mod-OA size turbines (125-ft diameter rotor) at a cost that is very competitive with other methods of manufacture.

Interactive systems analysis of four structural concepts for a Land Mobile Satellite System

Weight and structural analysis data were generated for four structural concepts for a Land Mobile Satellite System (LMSS) using the Interactive Design and Evaluation of Advanced Spacecraft (IDEAS) computer-aided design and analysis program. Structural concepts analyzed included the wrapped radial rib, box ring, tetrahedral truss, and hoop column. Estimates of total spacecraft weight, structural natural frequencies and modal shapes were determined and compared for several loading conditions for each concept. Spacecraft-induced and environmental effects on antenna performance (surface accuracy, defocus and boresight offset) are quantified.

Characteristics of a dual mission concept for intensive study of moon and Mars or moon and asteroids

An assessment is presented of the results of recent feasibility studies on a low cost dual mission concept, employing a single spacecraft for the sequential, intensive survey of two planets. After establishing the features of a basic lunar-Martian polar orbiting mission in the context of existing spacecraft and propulsion technology, an examination of trajectory options shows that an earth return maneuver allows the application of the same concept to lunar-asteroid missions and offers substantial savings for the lunar-Martian mission. The implications of Centaur availability for extension of this concept to main-belt asteroids and to tripple missions are considered, along with questions of cost and reliability.

Shuttle Entry Air Data System concepts applied to Space Shuttle Orbiter flight pressure data to determine air data - STS 1-4

The Shuttle Entry Air Data System (SEADS) is the implementation of a new concept in air data systems, with application to entry vehicles. This concept incorporates an array of flush orifices in the nose and forward fuselage of the vehicle and a new flowfield modeling concept for the analysis of flight data and the determination of the required air data parameters. Although the SEADS has not been fully demonstrated, a developmental analysis capability has been assembled and demonstrated. This analytical capability has been used to analyze selected Development Flight Instrumentation (DFI) pressure data from STS-1 through STS-4 and determine angle of attack and freestream dynamic pressure. The results of this study verify the potential of the SEADS as a highly fault tolerant operational air data system. In addition, the transition of SEADS from its present status as an experimental system to an operational system is shown to be readily achievable.

Flight management concepts development for fuel conservation

It is pointed out that increased airspace congestion will produce increased flight delay unless advanced flight management concepts are developed to compensate. It has been estimated that a 5 percent reduction in delay is approximately equivalent, in terms of direct operating costs, to a 5 percent reduction in drag. The present investigation regarding the development of the required flight management concepts is organized into three sections, related to background, current research, and future effort. In the background section, a summary is provided of past technical effort concerning flight management. The second section is concerned with on-going efforts to integrate flight management with ground-based flight planning, and with an advanced concepts simulator to test the new developments. In the third section, attention is given to research concerning airborne flight management integration with other flight functions.

SC3 - A wing concept for supersonic maneuvering

A supersonic wing design concept that overcomes the problems associated with nonlinear inviscid pressure distribution is presented together with a summary of the supporting theoretical and experimental development program. The key design feature is a conical panel supporting a controlled supercritical conical camber (SC3) crossflow expansion and recompression which permits lift on the upper surface to be obtained without producing an adverse pressure gradient or crossflow shock wave strong enough to separate the boundary layer. The role of aerodynamics in the design implementation is discussed, as are the concept development, the initial design validation on a fabricated and tested SC3 design, and the body and canard interaction effect. The design and testing of an isolated wing with a planform and thickness distribution representative of a practical application are described. Wind-tunnel results show that significant performance gains can be obtained for fighter aircraft using this concept.

Design concepts for low cost composite engine frames

Design concepts for low-cost, lightweight composite engine frames were applied to the design requirements for the frame of commercial, high-bypass turbine engines. The concepts consist of generic-type components and subcomponents that could be adapted for use in different locations in the engine and to different engine sizes. A variety of materials and manufacturing methods were assessed with a goal of having the lowest number of parts possible at the lowest possible cost. The evaluation of the design concepts resulted in the identification of a hybrid composite frame which would weigh about 70 percent of the state-of-the-art metal frame and cost would be about 60 percent.

Development and flight test of an X-band precision approach concept for remote-area rotorcraft operations

A novel airborne radar-based precision approach concept was developed and flight tested as a part of NASA's Rotorcraft All-Weather Operations Research Program. A demonstration, transponder-based beacon landing system (BLS), incorporating state-of-the-art X-band radar technology and digital processing techniques, was built and flight tested to demonstrate the concept feasibility. The BLS airborne hardware consists of an add-on microprocessor, installed in conjunction with the aircraft weather/mapping radar, which analyzes the radar beacon receiver returns and determines range, localizer deviation, and glide slope deviation. The ground station is an inexpensive, portable unit which can be quickly deployed at a landing site. Results from the flight test program show that the BLS concept has a significant potential for providing rotorcraft with low-cost, precision, instrument approach capability in remote areas.

A manned-machine space station construction concept

A design concept for the construction of a permanent manned space station is developed and discussed. The main considerations examined in developing the design concept are: (1) the support structure of the station be stiff enough to preclude the need for an elaborate on-orbit system to control structural response, (2) the station support structure and solar power system be compatible with existing technology, and (3) the station be capable of growing in a systematic modular fashion. The concept is developed around the assembly of truss platforms by pressure-suited astronauts operating in extravehicular activity (EVA), assisted by a machine (Assembly and Transport Vehicle, ATV) to position the astronauts at joint locations where they latch truss members in place. The ATV is a mobile platform that is attached to and moves on the station support structure using pegs attached to each truss joint. The operation of the ATV is described and a number of conceptual configurations for potential space stations are developed.
