Comprehensive Review of Multi-arm Caliper Data for the Big Hill SPR Site

The Big Hill SPR site has a rich data set consisting of multi-arm caliper (MAC) logs collected from the cavern wells. This data set provides insight into the on-going casing deformation at the Big Hill site. This report summarizes the MAC surveys for each well and presents well longevity estimates where possible. Included in the report is an examination of the well twins for each cavern and a discussion on what may or may not be responsible for the different levels of deformation between some of the well twins. The report also takes a systematic view of the MAC data presenting spatial patterns of casing deformation and deformation orientation in an effort to better understand the underlying causes. The conclusions present a hypothesis suggesting the small-scale variations in casing deformation are attributable to similar scale variations in the character of the salt-caprock interface. These variations do not appear directly related to shear zones or faults.

Comprehensive Review of DPF-based Flash Neutron Radiography Viability

MJOLNIR (MegaJOule Neutron Imaging Radiography) is a Dense Plasma Focus (DPF) being developed by LLNL as a prototype to assess the viability of a DPF as a flash neutron radiography source. To date, MJOLNIR has discharged up to 1.3 MJ of stored energy into a deuterium plasma load and achieved yields up to 1.2 × 10 12 neutrons per discharge. The MJOLNIR pulse length already meets the preliminary requirements for flash neutron radiography and we demonstrate in this report plausible paths forward to meet the yield requirement in a deuterium plasma. MJOLNIR’s neutron spot size has been characterized to be a factor of two greater than radiography requirements and presents the greatest challenge. A path forward to sufficiently shrinking spot size is outlined in this report, using a combination of gas dopants and a smaller anode implosion radius. A DPF is a plasma device with coaxial electrodes whose discharge ends with a stagnated hot and dense plasma column on-axis, at the tip of the central anode. Inside the MJOLNIR DPF plasma column, both thermal and beam target processes generate neutrons. To understand the underlying physics of neutron generation inside the DPF, we model the experiment using a combination of kinetic, fluid, and reduced-order models we have been developing for over ten years at LLNL. Our numerical tools are also pivotal to charting the path forward because they allow us to numerically test out which modifications would improve the DPF’s characteristic output.

A Comprehensive Simulation Study to Evaluate Future Vehicle Energy and Cost Reduction Potential

Under the umbrella of EERE’s Office of Sustainable Transportation, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) and Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) seek to develop sustainable, affordable, and efficient technologies for transportation of goods and people. Translating investments in advanced transportation component technologies and powertrains to estimate the potential for vehicle-level fuel savings is critical to understanding DOE’s impact and success in this mission For this study, Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) simulated technologies funded by VTO and HFTO for light-duty vehicles across the following: Powertrain configurations (conventional, power-split hybrid electric vehicle, extended-range electric vehicle, battery electric drive, and fuel-cell vehicles); Vehicle classes (compact car, mid-size car, small sport utility vehicle [SUV], mid-size SUV, and pickup truck); Fuels (gasoline, diesel, natural gas, hydrogen, and battery electricity). We assessed each technology for five different timeframes: laboratory years 2015 (reference), 2020, 2025, 2030, and 2045. We assumed a delay of 5 years between laboratory year and model year (i.e., the year the technology is introduced into production). Finally, we included uncertainties for both technology performance and cost by considering two cases (note that these cases are not intended as predictions of future performance): Low case , aligned with DOE technology manager estimates of expected original equipment manufacturer (OEM) improvements based on business as usual regulatory and market environments; High case , aligned with aggressive technology advancements based on research and development (R&D) targets developed through support by VTO and HFTO. We estimated the energy and cost impact of different technologies using Autonomie (Argonne undated), a state-of-the-art vehicle system simulation tool developed by Argonne and used to assess the energy consumption, performance, and cost of multiple advanced vehicle technologies. The tool comprises a complete set of vehicle models to assess impacts across a wide range of classes (from light- to heavy-duty), powertrain configurations (from conventional to hybrid electric vehicles [HEVs], fuel cell electric vehicles [FCEVs], plug-in hybrid electric vehicles [PHEVs], and battery electric vehicles [BEVs]), components, and control strategies, including vehicle-level and component-level controls developed and calibrated using dynamometer test data. Autonomie has been used to support a wide range of studies: analyzing various component technologies, sizing powertrain components to meet different vehicle requirements, comparing the benefits of powertrain configurations, optimizing both heuristic and route-based vehicle energy control, and predicting transportation energy use when paired with a traffic modeling tool such as POLARIS. This report documents the assumptions made and the vehicle-level energy consumption benefits and associated technology costs estimated for various types of light-duty vehicles. Details regarding vehicle assumptions and simulation results are available in the spreadsheets accompanying this report.

Assessment of Microreactor Safety Analysis Challenges and Recommendations for Utilization of the Comprehensive Reactor Analysis Bundle

To enable the broad deployment of microreactors in fundamentally new application regimes (i.e., mobile and autonomous operations), their safety must be indisputable in terms of possessing inherent resistance to severe offsite dose consequences. Therefore, mechanistic beyond-design-basis event source term calculations that demonstrate a sufficiently large margin of safety will be required to accommodate these new application regimes, which have no history of commercial regulation. Even for traditional reactor operation configurations, safety analysis expertise and familiarity with accident phenomena and conditions in microreactors—specifically those with heat pipe primary cooling arrangements—are lacking compared with other advanced reactor concepts and small modular reactors. Recently, modeling and simulation tools to account for unique heat pipe design aspects have been developed by Sandia National Laboratories with MELCOR and by the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation Program with BlueCRAB. However, further demonstration and assessment of potential knowledge gaps are needed to support these codes’ broad usage by the microreactor community. Through the DOE Microreactor Program, an initial assessment of these two tools and guidance on how an evaluation model could be constructed was performed and is reported herein. Moreover, a proposed approach for demonstrating an evaluation model using these two tools is outlined.

A comprehensive strategy for stable, high productivity cultivation of microalgae with controllable biomass composition

This project was performed primarily as a partnership between three Universities – The University of Toledo (UToledo), Montana State University (MSU) and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). North Carolina State University also contributed to the project through a sub-subcontract. The project developed fundamental and applied knowhow for cultivation systems that are not restricted by (i) proximate availability of flue gas or other high concentration CO 2 sources and (ii) the energy and infrastructure burden to deliver CO 2 over long distances. To overcome these constraints, this project focused on cultivation of alkaliphilic algal cultures in high pH, high alkalinity media (pH>10, alkalinity >100mEq) and demonstrated high biomass productivity, improvement of biomass composition for fuel production, and culture stability. The high media alkalinity ensured availability of sufficient HCO 3 - in solution for high rates of carbon fixation while the high pH of the media facilitated rapid scavenging of atmospheric CO 2 . Overall, the direct air capture rates (DAC) in our system were sufficient to achieve high biomass productivities using atmospheric CO 2 alone. The project also developed and validated toolkits related to metabolic flux modeling and microbiome characterization.

BatAnalysis - A Comprehensive Python Pipeline for Swift BAT Survey Analysis

The Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) is a coded-aperture gamma-ray instrument with a large field of view that primarily operates in survey mode when it is not triggering on transient events. The survey data consist of 80- channel detector plane histograms that accumulate photon counts over periods of at least 5 minutes. These histograms are processed on the ground and are used to produce the survey data set between 14 and 195 keV. Survey data comprise >90% of all BAT data by volume and allow for the tracking of long-term light curves and spectral properties of cataloged and uncataloged hard X-ray sources. Until now, the survey data set has not been used to its full potential due to the complexity associated with its analysis and the lack of easily usable pipelines. Here, we introduce the BatAnalysis Python package, a wrapper for HEASoftpy, which provides a modern, opensource pipeline to process and analyze BAT survey data. BatAnalysis allows members of the community to use BAT survey data in more advanced analyses of astrophysical sources, including pulsars, pulsar wind nebula, active galactic nuclei, and other known/unknown transient events that may be detected in the hard X-ray band. We outline the steps taken by the Python code and exemplify its usefulness and accuracy by analyzing survey data of the Crab Nebula, NGC 2992, and a previously uncataloged MAXI transient. The BatAnalysis package allows for ~18 yr of BAT survey data to be used in a systematic way to study a large variety of astrophysical sources.

Designing a Comprehensive IDS Strategy for a Zero Trust Architecture Environment

Zero Trust Architecture or ZTA is a cybersecurity model for enterprises to structure their networked resources around to maintain total security externally and internally. In a Zero Trust environment, no part of the network is considered "trustworthy" and thus should be scrutinized and monitored extensively as is done in traditional "Trust But Verify" schemes at the network's perimeter. In this way, Zero Trust Architecture is a superior model for securing access to networked resources at the enterprise level. Fermilab, in pursuit of a better security posture, has decided to embrace this model of architecture for its network. Attaining this goal requires tremendous infrastructural, policy, and procedural adjustments that will affect all the lab's personnel and resources.

2024 Update of Comprehensive Review of Multi-arm Caliper Data for the Big Hill SPR Site

In addition, the deformation orientation shows no preferred directionality. This 2024 edition of this report represents an update to the original, 2023 edition. The updates primarily focus on the inclusion of MAC log data run since the December 2021 threshold date for the original report, but some new analyses are also included.

Comprehensive Review of 2$β$ Decay Half-Lives

The double-beta (2β)-decay is the rarest nuclear physics process, and its experimental half-lives (T 1/2 ) exceed the age of the Universe from nine to fourteen orders of magnitude. Double-beta decay was observed, and its half-life was measured in 14 parent nuclei using direct, radiochemical, and geochemical methods. The decay observables are analyzed using the Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF) procedures, and the recommended T 1/2 were deduced. Using the calculated values of phase factors, the effective nuclear matrix elements were extracted and compared with available data. Thousands of theoretical and experimental works have been dedicated to these topics in the last 85 years, and we present two data sets of recommended values to encapsulate the results.
