Wave Tank Testing Report for Controls Validation of a Heaving Point Absorber

The core objectives of this project is to improve the power capture of three different wave energy conversion (WEC) devices by more than 50% using an advanced control system and validate the attained improvements using wave tank and full scale testing. In parallel, we will bring along the development of a wave prediction system that is required to enable effective control and test it at full scale. The purposes of this report are to: 1. Plan and document the 1/25th scale device testing at the wave-tank facility; 2. Document the test article, setup and methodology, sensor and instrumentation, mooring, electronics, wiring, and data flow and quality assurance; 3. Communicate the testing results between the associated members; 4. Facilitate reviews that will help to ensure all aspects (risk, safety, testing procedures, etc.); 5. Provide a systematic guide to setting up, executing and decommissioning the experiment.

Feasibility Study of Developing Alternative Common-Cause Failure Model for Event Assessment

This report is a revision of the original report, INL/LTD-14-33376. The original report, which was a limited distribution to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) only and not available to the public, was revised as this report for public distribution. The report presents the feasibility study of alternative common-cause failure (CCF) models that could be used for event assessment in the Standardized Plant Analysis Risk (SPAR) models. The current CCF model used by the SPAR models is the alpha factor model. The proposed alternative CCF models are the partial alpha factor model and general dependency model. These alternative CCF models are reviewed and compared to the current alpha factor model, with the partial alpha factor model being identified as the preferred CCF model that could be used for event assessment in the SPAR models.

Controls Optimization Final Report, Controls Algorithms Report, Control Optimization - SPA II: Heaving Buoy Test Results [Three reports]

The over-arching project objective is to fully develop and validate optimal controls frameworks that can subsequently be applied widely to different WEC devices and concepts. Optimal controls of WEC devices represent a fundamental building block for WEC designers that must be considered as an integral part of every stage of device development. Using a building-blocks approach to optimal controls development, this effort will result in the full development of a feed-forward and feed-back control approach and a wave prediction system. Phase I focused primarily on numerical offline optimization and validation using wave tank testing of three industry partners’ WEC devices, including; CalWave, Ocean Energy, and Resolute Marine Energy. These industry partnerships allowed us to identify optimal control strategies for these different WEC topologies at different maturity levels. Phase II focused on demonstrating an integrated control system on an at-sea prototype that is to be custom-built and maturing the HW and SW required to successfully run our advanced controls code frameworks on at-sea systems. A secondary focus during phase II is to adapt our systems identification, controls and wave-prediction frameworks to become more robust and comprehensive in respect to RT capability, robustness, and reliability.

RhizoGrid Indexed Sorghum Rhizosphere Multi-Omics

PerCon SFA project data dentification of spatially resolved biomarkers of drought in Sorghum bicolor rhizosphere molecular-microbe interactions using a novel root cartography "RhizoGrid" system for sampling plants under drought and control conditions across 10 equally sized root zone environments (4 quadrants each). Each quadrant was sampled and processed for 16S amplicon, metabolomics, and X-ray computed tomography (XCT). Data download includes experimental metadata and results files for 16S rRNA sequence analysis of microbial community assembly (processed data files), liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) metabolomics analysis of microbial community root exudates (processed data files), X-ray computed tomography (XCT) spatial gradient analysis (raw and processed data files) of microbial community composition, and related computational modeling outputs.

New insights into supradense matter from dissecting scaled stellar structure equations

The strong-field gravity in general relativity (GR) realized in neutron stars (NSs) renders the equation of state (EOS) P(ε) of supradense neutron star matter to be essentially nonlinear and refines the upper bound for Φ ≡ P/ε to be much smaller than the special relativity (SR) requirement with linear EOSs, where P and ε are respectively the pressure and energy density of the system considered. Specifically, a tight bound Φ ≲ 0.374 is obtained by perturbatively anatomizing the intrinsic structures of the scaled Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff (TOV) equations without using any input nuclear EOS. New insights gained from this novel analysis provide EOS-model-independent constraints on the properties (e.g., density profiles of the sound speed squared s 2 = dP/dε and trace anomaly Δ = 1/3 – Φ) of cold supradense matter in NS cores. Using the gravity-matter duality in theories describing NSs, we investigate the impact of gravity on supradense matter EOS in NSs. In particular, we show that the NS mass M NS , radius R, and compactness ξ ≡ M NS /R scale with certain combinations of its central pressure and energy density (encapsulating its central EOS). Thus, observational data on these properties of NSs can straightforwardly constrain NS central EOSs without relying on any specific nuclear EOS model.
