Desktop Audits: Overview, Case Studies, Guidance

The Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 requires that federal agencies audit 25% of their 3.1 billion square feet of covered facilities each year. Several newer, advanced options such as monitoring-based commissioning, fault detection and diagnostics, and energy management systems can help support data collection and analysis to be used for EISA compliance. The Federal Energy Management Program's (FEMP’s) Audit Decision Tree, Audit Definitions, and FEMP Guidance can be used by Agencies to determine the best approaches to evaluate their facilities. FEMP continues to develop additional resources to support agencies in meeting EISA compliance. This presentation gives an overview of desktop audits, including case studies and guidance.

MoorDyn V2: New Capabilities in Mooring System Components and Load Cases: Preprint

MoorDyn, an open-source mooring dynamics model, is being expanded with capabilities for additional mooring system features and load cases. As floating wind turbine technology matures, mooring systems are becoming more sophisticated and more complex scenarios need to be considered in the design process. Mooring systems may have synthetic line materials, ballast/buoyancy bodies along the lines, or interconnections between platforms. Failure modes may involve multiple cascading line failures that depend on mooring system dynamics. Features recently added to MoorDyn aim to address these emerging needs. MoorDyn’s linear elasticity model has been supplemented to support user-defined stress-strain curves, which can be adjusted to represent synthetic mooring materials. Rigid six-degree-of-freedom bodies in the mooring system can now be modeled using two new model objects. “Rod” objects provide an option for rigid cylindrical bodies. They use the existing Morison equation-based hydrodynamics model and can be connected to mooring lines at either end. “Body” objects provide a generic six-degree-of-freedom rigid-body representation based on a lumped-parameter model of translational and rotational properties. Rod objects can be added to Body objects and mooring lines can be attached at any location, allowing a wide variety of submerged structures to be integrated into the mooring system. Lastly, a means of dynamically simulating mooring line failures has been implemented. These new features, currently in the C++ version of MoorDyn, are described and then demonstrated on a two-turbine shared-mooring array. A qualitative view of the results suggests the new features are functioning as expected.

Case Study of ISO/TS 6336-22 Micropitting Calculation

ISO/TS 6336-22 (Calculation of load capacity of spur and helical gears - Part 22: Calculation of micropitting load capacity) is the ISO technical specification containing a proposal for a method to calculate the risk of micropitting in gear sets. It assesses micropitting risk through a safety factor which is calculated as the minimum specific film thickness in the contact zone divided by a permissible specific film thickness. A sliding parameter is used to adjust the film thickness in the contact zone to the region of highest sliding, which is where micropitting has been observed. The permissible specific film thickness is best determined through experience or testing, but there is an option to estimate it based on the lubricant’s failure load stage in FZG testing. This paper is a case study of how the method behaves when applied to several gear sets and applications that have experienced micropitting in the field.

IEA Wind Energy Task 37 System Engineering Aerodynamic Optimization Case Study: Preprint

This paper presents the results from the first IEA Wind Task 37 aerodynamic optimization case study. Eight participants applied their optimization tools to a purely aerodynamic problem and the results were compared. Overall, the different tools produced widely different designs, while there was better agreement in the improvement achieved. This highlights the fact that further investigation is needed to try to understand these differences and develop best practices. There were too many differences between the different analysis and optimization codes to determine the sources of these differences. However, several potential sources of discrepancy were identified for further investigation. One hypothesis is that one potential source of discrepancy is that the design problem itself is relatively flat in design directions of constant loading. This flatness would impact the convergence in the optimization, and at the same time mean that discrepancies in the design itself would be less severe.

Heating case for a portable electronic device

A case for an electronic device includes a housing for enclosing the electronic device and a removable heating device that may be placed in or on the housing for warming the electronic device without electricity from the electronic device. The removable heating device includes a pouch enclosing a supersaturated solution and a metal disk. The super saturated solution in the pouch undergoes an exothermic reaction when the disk is actuated.

A Case Study on the HACCmk Routine in SYCL on Integrated Graphics

As opposed to the Open Computing Language (OpenCL) programming model in which host and device codes are generally written in different languages, the SYCL programming model can combine host and device codes for an application in a type-safe way to improve development productivity. In this paper, we chose the HACCmk routine, a representative compute-bound kernel, as a case study on the performance of the SYCL programming model targeting a heterogeneous computing device. More specifically, we introduced the SYCL programming model, presented the OpenCL and SYCL implementations of the routine, and compared the performance of the two implementations using the offline and online compilation on Intel (R) Iris (TM) Pro integrated GPUs. We found that the overhead of online compilation may become significant compared to the execution time of a kernel. Compared to the performance of OpenCL implementations, the SYCL implementation can maintain the performance using the offline compilation. The number of execution units in a GPU are critical to improving the raw performance of a compute-bound kernel.

THE CASE FOR MULTICRITERIA ANNUAL SUNLIGHT EXPOSURE GUIDELINES

This paper explored the effects of the current Annual Sunlight Exposure (ASE1000 lux, 250 hours) requirements on energy consumption and thermal comfort of an office space in five cities representing different U.S. climates. Specifically, the goal was to quantify the extent to which the current ASE metric requirements may be adjusted allowing for more/ less annual sunlight exposure to address climatic differences, energy, and thermal comfort criteria. A south-facing perimeter office space was simulated in the five climates to assess differences in energy and thermal comfort between the current ASE requirements and best-case scenarios. The results highlight the need to incorporate thermal comfort and energy as primary criteria informing target ASE requirements and guidelines. Lastly, the paper discusses research pathways to help develop multi-criteria ASE guidelines.

Equations of Motion for the Vertical Rigid-Body Rotor: Linear and Nonlinear Cases

Centuries ago, the prolific mathematician Leonhard Euler (1707–1783) wrote down the equations of motion (EOM) for the heavy symmetrical top with one point fixed. The resulting set of equations turned out to be nonlinear and had a limited number of closed-form solutions.Today, tools such as transfer matrix and finite elements enable the calculation of the rotordynamic properties for rotor-bearing systems. Some of these tools rely on the “linearized” version of the EOM to calculate the eigenvalues, unbalance response, or transients in these systems. In fact, industry standards mandate that rotors be precisely balanced to have safe operational characteristics. However, in some cases, the nonlinear aspect of the EOM should be considered. The purpose of this chapter is to show examples of how the linear vs. nonlinear formulations differ. This chapter also shows how excessive unbalance is capable of dramatically altering the behavior of the system and can produce chaotic motions associated with the “jump” phenomenon.

Case Study: Hybridizing Nuclear Energy Systems in the U.S.

This case study was presented at the ICTP-IAEA VIRTUAL Course on Nuclear-Renewable Integrated Energy Systems: Phenomenology, Research and Development. It provides preliminary results on an analysis of hybridizing the two nuclear power plants owned by Xcel Energy and located in Minnesota. The analysis extends previous analyses that provided only price-taker results. Those assume adjusting the generation sold to the grid does not impact locational marginal electricity prices nor do they estimate impacts on the total net cost to serve the load. This presentation summarizes the new technique that was developed to both optimize the size and operations of the hybridized system and the resulting impacts on the grid when it is operated optimally.
